Something has landed deep in the mountains of Colorado … and it’s hungry.
Telluride is Effie's home, where she spends her days exploring the mountains and her nights working in the airport's control tower. When she sees something fall from the sky and mysterious deaths start plaguing the mountains, Effie is determined to locate the impact site. There she crosses paths with Kel, an astrophysicist and the only other person to see the UFO. It doesn’t take the pair long to identify that their unidentified object is no mere meteorite.
Meanwhile, Lance, Effie’s cousin and the chief deputy sheriff, is in over his head. He was hired by an underground agency to keep the presence of aliens on Earth a secret, but that was easier before one was living under his feet.
As Lance tries to keep things contained, Effie and Kel team up to prove that there’s something dangerous and extraterrestrial hiding in the mountains. And all the while, the death toll keeps rising.
I’ve followed this author for instagram for a while and her book recs have never let me down, so I’ll read basically anything she writes. I was very excited to receive an ARC in exchange for my review! To Hell You Ride is a realistic sci-fi horror that really leans into conspiracy theories (including those about the Denver airport which I love bc I have lived in Colorado). The writing style was very different from her previous books—the narrator seems semi-omniscient, and the tone sort of reminded me of a nonfiction book or a nature documentary—which was very well done, but not my fave, and made it hard for me to get into.
Carissa Hardcastle has nailed it in her newest foray into the sci-fi / horror genre. Having fallen in love with her writing in her debute fantasy, I should have known that her descriptive writing style and incredible attention to detail was guarenteed to deliver a scifi sensation!!
THYR delivers suspense, bravery, horror-esque stupidity and witty one-liners that draw you in and speak to your bookish soul. From the first alien attack this was unputdownable. If you love a little horror, tension, kick @ss characters and scifi vibes you are in for the BEST time!! 5💫
I was lucky to receive an ARC for this (which was my first ever ARC!) and what an experience!
To Hell You Ride was a horror filled creature feature, with a cast full of characters that truly make the experience all the while, including our unidentified fallen object that brings the FMC and MMC to become an unstoppable duo.
Our FMC, Effie, to me was really relatable, with her lust for life and adventure, loves her pop punk and thankfully didn’t grow out of that phase, and runs on a language of sarcasm, I really loved following her throughout this book. Our MMC, ‘science-man, space enthusiast, stoner: a Kel Curtis story’, as described in the book and it really is the best description of this loveable guy! His love for our solar system brought me so much joy and happiness, and reminded me of why it really is so incredible just to look up on a clear night, which I do frequently!
The real main character, what’s lurking in the mountains.. well all I’ll say is that our unknown friend being described as ‘insane, terrifying and beautifully evolved’ was just so right, and Carissa really brings them to life in an incredible way.
I would also say that a big character was the setting as well, the town of Telluride which created such incredible imagery for those who didn't know of its real life existence beforehand (me, a well-travelled yet apparent uneducated Brit who knows little about the Rocky mountains it seems!). It wasn't until I finished the book and googled Telluride to discover it is a real place and found it exactly how I imagined it thanks to Carissa's detailed narration!
The book was reminiscent of so many things, classic creature feature movies of both sci fi and horror genres, sprinkled with some good old rom-com vibes, and also had me thinking of the Supermassive video games, especially House of Ashes, and all these aspects mushed together made such a fun experience and an incredible read.
If Carissa Hardcastle writes it I will read it. I love her style of writing and the multiple POVs (especially the alien? hello?), and I loved how much of a nerd Kel is. All the math and space talk, and the rambling both he and Effie did about their respective passions was so cute and relatable. As usual the banter and humor was there, which is another thing I love about Car's writing.
"Either we just discovered a new species of mountain-dwelling crustacean, or that was a fucking alien."
The descriptive writing was fantastic, I feel like I witnessed our alien slaughter and devour people, through her own eyes too. And yeah I know that she's an invasive species and would go on a killing spree just because, but why was I kinda like "yes girl show them that you're so much better evolved and straight up terrifying" and feeling sad knowing that she would have to be taken out for humanity to survive? You know the book is written well when you start feeling bad for the poor misunderstood superior-in-every-way alien who's just there to take over the planet. Or maybe that's just me 🤷♀️
Carissa has done it again y’all! This is why she’s one of my top authors. And an auto-buy, obv.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (crème de la crop) 🌶️ (upper YA for spice ONLY!!! I wouldn’t let your 14yo read this 🤣) 🔥🔥🔥 (medium-fast burn pace)
TW: lots and lots of gore, murder, death, blood, body mutilation via invasive species, references to nicotine addiction, recreational 🍃 usage
Tropes: allies-to-lovers, sci-fi horror romance
Read if you like: plot-driven romance stories, lots of gore, high angst plots with low angst romance, intelligent heroines, pothead stargazing astrophysicists
Now for the review!
👽Pre-release ARC review👽
Meet Kel - your neighborhood stargazing astrophysicist. Side job: p0thead. Meet Effie - your neighborhood Airforce team member. Side job: adventurist/investigator. Combine them, a government conspiracy, crash-landed UFO, new species of alien, and what do you get? A 💣 a$$ horror sci-fi romance for the ages.
What I liked: •That it’s so heavily focused on plot over the romance. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good love story! And Carissa writes them well. But I love how her books are so extra plot-heavy with enough romance to stay engaged. •HOLY FKN $H!T that INTRO tho!!!! •Honestly Kel is sexy af •I’m not super into sci-fi so I can’t say for sure, but the storyline feels truly unique. I loved it. •Enough epic lil plot twists that kept me guessing the whole way through •Multiple POV’s. Always a plus. And she always handles them so well! •So many relatable LOL moments •Completely unique from Leaves. I find with many authors that their unconnected books - even of diff genres - still echo the same vibe or theme as their other books. Not the case here! A totally separate and unique story.
What I didn’t: (had no effect on rating) •How many space words I had to look up bc I’m dumb af 🤣🤣🤣
I recommend this book for readers 18+ due to graphic horror themes
I would read an oven manual if Carissa Hardcastle wrote it. I don’t usually wander into the realm of sci fi or horror but I have it a shot and loved it!
The entire book was effortless to read. Carissa is one of the best at character development. Every detail is there for a reason. To paint a picture of exactly who each person is.
The plot was fast paced and kept you wanting to read more.
I feel like most of the time sci fi is hard for me to picture in my head. It’s why I don’t really enjoy it. But this was so crystal clear and simple. It wasn’t over the top because it didn’t need to be. That’s how good the writing is
I 10/10 recommend this book to anyone looking to get their heart racing a little bit.
“Either we just discovered a new species of mountain-dwelling crustacean, or that was a fucking alien.”
Carissa is an auto-buy author for me and this book did not disappoint. It was action-packed and kept me on the edge of my seat. There was a perfect sprinkle of romance throughout. The horror elements were well executed, and the writing style made the deadly alien creature somehow lovable. The entire novel read as if I was watching a movie and had realistic and relatable characters.
To Hell You Ride had all the classic elements of a superb creature feature in one of the most picturesque towns in all of Colorado and it was truly delightful.
Effie Blake, a blue-haired, sarcastic Air Force vet, works in the Telluride Air control tower where she spots a strange falling object late one night.
Dr. Kel no-middle-name Curtis, an astrophysicist and lovable space nerd, happens to be stargazing when he sees something very large and out of this world fall from the sky toward the town of Telluride.
This unidentified falling object brings the two together, but what keeps them together is the undeniable feeling that something bad is going down in the Rocky Mountains and the truth is veiled in secrets and lies.
What follows is a chilling tale of monsters and conspiracies come to life, gruesome attacks and an unexpected yet heartwarming romance in the midst of it all.
Hardcastle seamlessly weaves together all the classic elements of a nostalgic creature feature with all the charm of a classic rom-com in a story about survival vs self-importance that will have you questioning your place in the universe as well as all the conspiracies you’ve ever heard about Colorado (spoiler alert, they’re all true.)
To Hell You Ride is the perfect horror story for those dark, rainy summer nights that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
Big thanks to Car for yet again making me part of your ARC group for this story! I'm always so honoured when I get to read for you 💜
To Hell You Ride did not disappoint 😱 This book was written so well: it flowed nicely, the writing was easily consumable and the descriptions were amazing. I was able to see everything in my mind so vividly (which at parts gave me the heebies) and I loved it. This book played in my head like a movie it was so well crafted.
To Hell You Ride takes place in the Colorado mountains in a town called Telluride. The town itself is a quaint touristy town nestled in the mountains with gorgeous scenery. Effie, the FMC, is an ex-military air traffic controller with a penchant for adventure, scary movies and pop-punk music. Relatable AF. I loved her and everything about her drive for adventure and determination to seek answers. Kel, the MMC, is a space-obsessed astrophysicist with a drive to discover something world shifting and who refuses to stop when seeking answers about the mysteries of the universe. Together they make a stubborn and unstoppable pair! Lance is Effie's cousin, who I would classify as another MMC. The town deputy chief, he is employed to keep what's fallen into the mountains under wraps but as bodies keep dropping he starts to question his role in everything. The characters all jump off the page and their personalities really shine through the writing. As for the creature lurking in the mountains? Well, it's hungry and ready to dominate this new planet. You'll have to read this one to find out more...
To Hell You Ride is a great book for fans of sci-fi and horror. Definitely would recommend this one! 👽👾
To Hell You Ride by Carissa Hardcastle did not disappoint! I've read all of Hardcastle's work and this book shows us another side of the author's writing and way of storytelling. I thought that the structure and povs' were very well done and creative, providing a high-stakes experience to the reader, while at the same time, giving a charming tour of Colorado. I also felt like I was watching a movie since we got multiple povs.
The characters felt very relatable and likable. I shouldn't have been surprised that we got Gordon's POV since Hardcastle has done something similar before when it comes to the antagonist's povs and it's always done nicely! Seeing Gordon's side did get me attached and helped me understand her actions which were survival driven and also dauntlessly cocky lol.
I knew going in that To Hell You Ride was a sci-fi/horror creature feature, but it was also nice getting a little splash of romance in the story.
The ending I thought was realistic too and IMO is how the government would handle if something like this would happen, if it's not happening already lol.
To me, this is a book I can easily recommend to most people. It has a little bit of everything. Action, adventure, mystery, romance, scifi, and relatability.
Thank you very much for the ARC and these have been my honest thoughts.
What do you do when you see something fall from the sky?
When you are an astrophysicist you try to find pieces of the meteroid.
When you are a curious ex military you just want to see what landed in your mountains and when you work for the secret agency that hides the existence of aliens on the planets, you try to keep everyone far away.
But when your new neighbor starts killing people things get complicated.
This was my first horror book ever and I loved it so much. I know that I love Car's writing so much and have inhaled all her books and this one was no exception.
She made me dive into a completely new genre and I absolutely loved to leave my comfort zone. I wasn't scared while reading, but I had goosebumps more than once and definitely appreciated the gore and morbidity of the book.
Car manages to put all these seemingly irrelevant details in scenes without prolonging the plot. And the details are the reasons why her books are so special. It just makes you picture everything and gives the scenes more depth.
Additionally, like always, I really liked the characters and I want to know more about them and how they are going to act now.
"Either we just discovered a new species of mountain-dwelling crustacean, or that was a fucking alien."
I devoured this - not unlike the way George devoured her prey. Loved the multiple POV and the story!
"Man is extremely self-aggrandizing in this way. He thinks of a threat that reminds him of himself, but with greater tools, and decides that this is the fate he could never possibly overcome."
I don’t usually get to read horror books, but horror movies are a fave of mine. This book was awesome, I could absolutely see it in my head as a movie! The descriptions of the settings and the characters created wonderfully vivid scenes.
The romance, the guts and gore, the suspense leading to what was going to happen next, the heroics of the characters… I loved it from start to finish.
Car is an auto-read author for me, and I hope she will become the same for you!
Something landed in the mountains and Air Controller Effie and Astrophysicist Kel seem to be the only ones who saw it fall and their lack of answers only lead to more questions. Let’s find out what it is!
Read if you like: horror/sci-fi, creature feature, a side of romcom, aliens, government secrets, small town disaster, gore, regular people saving the day.
When people start dying in the mountains, it’s obvious to our suspicious duo that a bear is not the culprit despite what the local authorities are telling them. Effie’s cousin, Lance, is the deputy sheriff. What no one realizes is that he was hired by a special government agency to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. He’s never had a problem before now but the situation seems to be getting worse even if the agents claim otherwise. As Effie and Kel grow more suspicious and the creature becomes more voraciously active, they realize they can’t rely on the agency for help and decide to take matters into their own hands.
So, this is not my usual read and let me tell you I’m so glad I applied for this ARC. To Hell You Ride is like a fantastic 90s/00s sci-fi action flick. It has all the good stuff with the small-town vibes, secret squirrel government agency, creepy monster aliens, and fun banter between a scientist and military veteran. I can see it playing out before my eyes and I want to watch it again and again.
The pacing is great especially with the different POVs. We get a full account of the 6 whole days it takes this short and epic saga to go down, with fun insights from “the future” or other sources. I was so excited to get inside info from Lance alongside our valiant questers for the truth. Things would have been much worse for Effie and Kel without his insight and connections. Oh, we also get the POV of the monster. I told you… delightful full account.
If you want something fun, punchy, creepy, and reminiscent of the gory disaster/sci-fi movies of yesteryear then pick this up and prepare for an invasion. Thank you to Carissa Hardcastle for an eARC!
Love this book so much! Hardcastle has nailed the paranoia, gore and grit that I look for (and love) from creature feature. Really hope she writes more like this!
This is the book that should be on everyone’s summer reads list. It’s genuinely one of those stories that anyone would enjoy. An 80s creature feature in book form, my jump scare, horror film heart fell head over heels for this novel. It’s clever, witty, absolutely disgusting and everything I could have wanted.
