He's a dashing millionaire who thinks everything in life is one big joke, probably because he bathes in piles of money each morning. He’s also my new neighbor, and after a humiliating experience in the cemetery that is my backyard, he becomes my shadow, showing up everywhere just to annoy me.
I’m not a fan of happy people. They bother me with their constant grins and rainbows coming out of their ears, and Vander Booth is the king of smiles. Despite my efforts to scare him away with both my profession as an undertaker and my general need for frowning through most of my workday, he sticks around like a bad case of poison ivy.
He is gorgeous though. I’ll give him that. And when I see the way he coordinates outfits with his grandma just to make her happy, I'll admit my biological clock starts ticking. Add in his fear of real human connections and suddenly I find myself cheering for the guy instead of plotting his death.
Though opposites can attract—and boy is my black lipstick attracted to his glow-in-the-dark smile—they don’t stay together long-term. And they certainly can’t co-exist when they’re fighting constantly in a knock-down, drag-out competition for the same piece of land for their business venture. Or can they? Cue ominous organ music…
Marika is a USA Today bestselling author writing steamy RomComs to make your heart explode and bring a smile to your face. She lives by the beach and posts a delightful number of hot lifeguard pictures.
Be still, my Vander-loving heart! For it is bonfire as well. This book gave me MAJOR SWOONS. Marika Ray knocked it out of the park with Marlo’s story. I was so intrigued by her and eager to get to know her underneath that hard, black cat exterior. And she was utterly fascinating.
Marika is one of my go-to RomCom authors. Her stories are always well-written and full of the perfect mix of heart, humor, and spice. And this book had all that and more. I swear I had a big smile most of the time while reading this. And I’m pretty sure I sighed with pure contentment when I finished.
Marlo and Vander’s meet-cute was adorable. Their banter hilarious and perfect. The attraction and chemistry was sizzling & electric. Their personalities so opposite, yet so quirky and perfect.
The cover - spot on. The humor - clever, witty, top notch. The heart emotion - strong and plentiful. The main characters - SO DANG LOVABLE.
The golden retriever hero was absolutely smitten with this black cat heroine, and not at all afraid of her sharp edges and scowls and claws and snarky barbs. He saw her. And he wanted her. He truly saw her for who she was inside. She’s just a girl, looking at a boy, wanting him to see past the black clothes and undertaker status.
And let’s not forget all of the other characters in this story besides Vander and Marlo. Seeing all of the others from the previous books made my heart so frickin’ happy. They are all unique and lovable and have amazing personalities.
And then there’s G-Mil. After the first couple of pages, Grandma Milly already owned a piece of my heart. She was charming and delightful and full of mischief, the best kind of mischief. She has always been there for her grandson, Vandy, and she just wants what’s best for him. She was an absolute gem of a side character. I’d love a Grandma like her!
If you’ve read the other books in this series, you’ll want/need this one! I couldn’t wait Marlo’s story and I was happily and beautifully satisfied. Bring on the next book!
This hilarious story will give you all the swoony swoons while also pulling at your heartstrings with all the emotions. It is a captivating tale of acceptance, growth, and healing sneakily wrapped in a romcom. It is full of swoons, quirky townspeople, love, absurdity, drama, sweet moments, strong families, supportive friends, spicy times, painful pasts, and love. And oh the tropes in this one - reverse grump-sunshine, rivals, enemies to lovers, just a fling, black cat-golden retriever personalities - all played out by two strong, determined but wounded main characters. This story was romcom perfection. Vandar and Marlo are portrayed as real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Plus they are adorkable together. The banter. The internal monologues. The ridiculous insults. The swoony romance. I loved it all. The story had the perfect balance of all the best a romance can offer. Marlo is an undertaker and runs the funeral home in small town Blueball. Her family has run the business for three generations. She is grumpy and has perfected a deadpan personality. She has a few good girlfriends (FMCs in the other books in the series) but otherwise her social life is limited. She struggles with dating because of her profession. Vandar is a millionaire who recently sold his best selling app and has moved to Blueball to be near his favorite person, Grandma Milly. He is always happy and the life of the party but he has no deep relationships other than with his G-Mil. Their meet cute was equally ridiculous and adorable and weird but perfect for who they are as a couple. Vandar and Marlo’s journey to their HEA will have you feeling all the things. I have a soft spot for the people who are a bit uncomfortable in their skin because they don’t feel like they fit in or are worthy, like Vandar and Marlo. So I love when they finally see their truth and their worth and they get swoon worthy HEAs. It makes my weirdo heart so happy that these two found each other and that I have gotten to spend so much time getting to know this ridiculous town and its quirky people.
4.5 STARS Book four in the series of interconnected books can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV. Marlo is a character that is different and quirky in all the best ways. She is the “grump” in this grumpy /sunshine romance. Vander is a billionaire who has moved to Blueball to spend time and care for his grandmother, who he calls G-Mil. He is the smiling guy with the charisma to work a room. Underneath that smile is a golden retriever hero who really wants to love and be loved. Under Marlo’s darkness is a heroine who wants to be accepted, quirks and all. Together they are perfect for each other. They have sizzling chemistry and are able to see each other’s true person quickly. I love how they accept each other. I adore how Vander sees the woman Marlo is instead of her job. He falls hard and just needs to believe that she has fallen just as hard to get their forever. There is some dark humor mixed into this book about friendship, acceptance, and living the life that makes you happy; especially if it looks different from anyone else’s. This series always makes me smile. I am thrilled that the author handled some darker concepts within the rom-com format and did it well. I loved it. Pants are an important part of this story. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
"This woman was prettier than any celebrity I'd ever seen. She was gorgeous when she frowned, but her smile put her somewhere in the stratosphere of angels. I was witnessing a miracle."
Ladies....get yourself a man like Vander Booth. That man does not have a bad bone in his body. He is adorably perfect in every way. I mean his grandma is his best friend....it gets not cuter than that. He was meant to end up in Marlo's path.
This reverse grumpy/sunshine had me grinning from beginning to end. I wouldn't call Marlo a negative Nancy but she is skeptical of pretty much everything while Vander is the complete opposite and sees the good in everyone and everything. As is custom with a Marika Ray the meet-cute was hilarious and I swear could only happen to one of her characters.
Vander and Marlo 100% complete each other and if anyone deserves the kind of love Vander has to offer it is definitely her. Not only do we get the excellence that is these two we are blessed with G-Mil (grandma Milly) who was so dang hilarious and then all of the loveable couples from the previous books are here for the ride. It is with these characters that Vander finally finds a place he feels he belongs and can call home. He brings some sunshine to Marlo's life and she gives him the home he has always been missing in his life.
I was honoured to receive this advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
Vander Booth - 32 year old rich, retired as he sold an APP that he designed. He has just brought the Skinner House that over looks the local cemetery & The Blueball Endless Eternity Funeral Home. only G-Mil gets to call him Vandy, Will wear a jumper out in public that his G-Mil makes for him - reason why is soooo adorable!!!
Grandma (Mildred) Milly aka as G-Mil she is the sweetest bizzybody going! She is being looked after by Vander
Marlo Balmero - 26 years old and is the 3rd generation of undertaker's (daddy's girl) Vander comes up with the most adorable nickname for Marlo. To her friends she is also known as the Duchess of Darkness. Marlo has a bizarre medical condition that not many people can cope with which meant that she hides in the shadows, but deep down she just wants to be wanted and to be loved.
One of the best quotes has to be..... "She smelled like wildflowers, mystery, and formaldehyde."
The public declaration appology.... Wow! This author has written her fair share of public declarations in her stories but wow this is one of the better ones.
This book is worth so much MORE than 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow! A laugh out loud, feel-good love story. What an amazing writing style Marika has. I was so enthralled by this story I found it hard to put down and when I had to I was telling everyone that would listen just how amazing the story I’m currently reading is. Chuckling over Marlo and Vander’s first meeting was just the start. This story had me laughing so many times throughout that I was beginning to get strange looks. It was such a delight! So uplifting. With Marlo, she’s dark and brooding to Vander’s sunshine and light they are two quirky, lonely people navigating their feelings for each other. Add in Vander’s grandma G-Mil, who has no filter and is outrageously comical at times and this book is a winner. Do yourself a favour and read this story, I dare you. You will not regret it. You may even burst into uncontrollable laughter at times..
What an adorable story. Quirky Marlo, sunshine Vander. So opposite, they complement one another. Barbs are just foreplay and the perfect catnip for Vander. Marlo has always been deemed odd but Vander sees the woman underneath. GMil is a hoot as well as the rest of the glamperparadise crew. Marlo and Vander fit right in. Funny, quirky, swoony, this story has it all.
That’s it. I’m officially naming Marika Ray the rom-com queen!! Never would have thought I’d love an undertaker FMC as much as I did Marlo! Vander is the perfect sunshine in her dark life. And I love that she makes him work for her smiles. While being both hilarious & and little weird, this is a story about acceptance, friendship & family. I love the way the Bluebell crew accepts Marlo & all her quirks & loves her anyway & how they easily extend their friendships to include Vanderbilt. Milly was the hot mess bonus character I didn’t expect but couldn’t imagine the story without!!🫧🖤🫧
Another 5 star read from Marika! Loved this one. The dark humor, the chemistry, the verbal sparring, all of it. I have been waiting for Marlo's story and it did not disappoint!
Set My Heart Bonfire is the 4th book in the Blueball Band of Brothers book from Marika Ray and I simply adore Vander and Margo. These two are essentially the epitome of opposites attract creating the prefect opportunity for hilarious banter and situations while also allowing for some sweeter heart touching moments and all the delicious tension and heat.
Margo has always been the kind of black cloud in her friend group but she's gotten a little more surly as all of her friends have found the love of their lives, because dating as the towns undertaker isn't quite that easy. That is until Vander Booth moves into the mansion next door. Everything about him annoys her- he's too handsome, too charming and charismatic, too happy and smiling all the time- but mostly she can't stand that she's almost magnetically drawn to him.
Marika is a queen at adding hilarious and entertaining banter into her rom-coms but there is just something so special about the interactions between Margo and Vander. This is simply reverse grumpy sunshine at it's finest. Vander is basically a hyperactive golden retriever puppy to Margo's angel of darkness- but the more we dive into their characters the more that we get to see that deep down at their core, they are both just the lonely kids who desperately want a connection but are too scared of being rejected.
I loved how these two just clicked and made sense- even when Margo was fighting it. Vander may have normally been the guy to keep his relationships surface level but his dedication to making Margo smile and finding the perfect dates for her- OMG I swooned- so it was no big surprise that he was the one to fall first.
And while the phenomenal chemistry between these two was obviously a big draw- it wouldn't be one of Marika's small town rom-coms without all the hilariously entertaining side characters. Vander's grandma Milly had me cackling so many times throughout the story and honestly I couldn't have loved hers and Vander's relationship any more or it might trump his relationship with Margo. Margo's friend group has always been great with Paisley, Keva and Audrey but I'm absolutely adoring they friendship between Gannon, Lincoln and Boston too and how easily they accepted Vander into the fold. As silly as it is- I was so excited to finally understand why this series has been called the Blueball Band of Brothers 😆
And now the stage has been set for the next Blueballer and I can't wait to see it all play out!
Set My Heart Bonfire is book four in the series Blueball Band of Brothers. Every time I think Marika Ray can't possibly outdo her previous books, she continues to prove me wrong! This book has it all and then some!
Vander Booth is a millionaire that has just bought a house in Blueball in order to be closer to his best friend, G-Mil... otherwise known as his eighty-year-old Grandma Milly. Vander may come across friendly and full of smiles, but underneath the smiles and wit is a man that doesn't have any genuine friends. He knows he needs to work on that, and sets his sights on getting to know the woman down by the cemetery.
Marlo Balmero has taken over running the family business, Blueball Endless Eternity, after her dad had a heart attack. Although her parents still help, the majority of the work is now her responsibility. She has discovered a problem...they will soon run out of land in the cemetery. She has the perfect solution and wants to purchase the land adjacent to the cemetery. However, there is one major obstacle...the land is owned by Milly Booth, and Marlo isn't the only one that wants to purchase it.
The story that unfolds will steal your heart! Marlo and Vander are about as opposite as you can get, yet you root for them to be together! Vander will steal your heart, because underneath his happy go lucky attitude is a man that is somewhat insecure when it comes to relationships. Marlo is hilarious with her dark humor and quick wit. She spends so much time with running the family business that she often forgets to take time for herself. She has a wonderful group of close friends, which fans of the series will recognize from the previous books. I can't forget to mention Grandma Milly is the real star of the story with her matchmaker ways.
Overall, this is just a great story from beginning to end. I love how the men at Glamper's Paradise are so welcoming to Vander, and was happy to see a bond develop between them. All of the characters are extremely well developed and realistic...flaws and all. I was able to relate to not fitting in because I've often felt that way in my own life. I absolutely love this story, and I can't recommend this book enough, as well as the previous books in the series.
I received an ARC from the author. My views are my own, and are in no way influenced by anyone else.
Only Marika Ray can turn a nighttime chance encounter in a cemetery into a meet-cute. This was the moment I knew this was going to be a binge-worthy read.
Vander Booth is a tech mogul who sells his company to move to Blueball to be near his best friend, his Grandma Milly. On the outside, Vander is the perfect combination of hot, likable, and confident but he uses a constant smile and humor as a cover for his social phobia.
Marlo Balmero is a mortician. Along with her parents, Marlo owns and operates the local funeral parlor. Marlo struggles to find a man who can appreciate her dark humor or her profession. That is until she meets her new neighbor.
Sometimes all it takes is someone who can accept you for your flaws and insecurities to show you what you can truly be. Can Vander use his sunshine to break through to his Little Ray of Darkness and reveal the girl who can let loose and have a good time? Can Marlo teach him that he is enough as he is and does not need to be perfect to be accepted and make friends?
The only obstacle is they discover they are both interested in acquiring the land that stretches behind both their homes. They find themselves in a battle over land they both want to acquire to secure their future businesses. Will a series of secrets and misunderstandings stand in the way of their HEA?
I highly recommend Set My Heart Bonfire. It is full of laugh-out-loud writing, steam, sweet moments, and some of the most endearing, broken characters I’ve read in a while.
Set My Heart Bonfire is a delightful romance novel that truly sets hearts ablaze. From the moment I delved into the pages of this book, I was swept away by the engaging storyline, well-developed characters, and the palpable chemistry between the protagonists.
Marika Ray's writing style is both captivating and emotive, drawing readers into a world where love, passion, and self-discovery intertwine seamlessly. The depth of emotions portrayed in the novel is truly commendable, making it a compelling read that tugs at the heartstrings.
The characters in Set My Heart Bonfire are multi-dimensional and relatable, each with their own unique quirks and vulnerabilities. The growth they experience throughout the story is both realistic and heartwarming, adding layers of depth to the narrative.
What truly sets this book apart is the author's ability to infuse every page with a sense of warmth and authenticity. The romantic tension between the main characters is electric, keeping readers on the edge of their seats and rooting for their happily ever after.
Overall, Set My Heart Bonfire is a must-read for fans of contemporary romance. Marika Ray has crafted a story that is both passionate and heartfelt, leaving a lasting impression that will linger long after the final page is turned. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a love story that will ignite their soul and leave them craving more.
If you are looking for an original Romantic Comedy than you have found it here. Yes, I did say original and this was a refreshing read to say the least. Its getting more common to find reverse tropes, but only Marika Ray could write a romance about Marlo, a grumpy female undertaker, finding love with Vander, a sunshine golden retriever Millionaire. These two could not be more different, she is full of dark wit and wry humor while he appears all smiles and light flirty banter. But all is not as it seems, he is working to build his circle of friends and she has depth that belies her professional facade. In the beginning all they share is their connection with G-Mill, Vander's Grandma Milly. She is his best friend and she is also the owner of the land that Marlo needs to expand the cemetery... add to this she's also a hoot and matchmaker and you have a recipe for a delightful, banter filled, and memorable romance between two people who are just so complimentary they feel ment to be. Their unique personalities and senses of humor weave a wonderful attraction that will make you fall for this book by the end of the first chapter. Filled with all the steam, sass, and passion that Ray always brings to her characters and wonderful glimpses into the lives of the previous Blueball couples form earlier book, you will find yourself cheering and sighing and giving advice that will rival G-Mill and the guys at Glamper's Paradise.
This is more than just a rom com. Yes, you’ll laugh, you’ll swoon, you may even get palpitations but you’ll also get maybe a new perspective on things.
This author takes situations we may rarely think about and makes us broaden our horizons. We are brought of our own little world and dive into issues that we may have been near but never were personally involved. We get to see the other side of things. Things that beg the questions; are things always as they appear, should you take everyone at face value and are first impressions lasting impressions or always accurate? Well this is why you read the book.
Marlo and Vander at first seem like the odd couple. One has a unique profession, is staid, has her secrets and an unusual emotional response. The other is rich, quirky and always on the move.
Seeing these friends evolve and develop into so much more is handled in a very real way.
Of course there’s the townspeople who are in everyone’s business. They keep everyone on their toes. Then there’s the friends we’ve met before if you’ve read the other books in this series.
If you want a book that has you feeling all the feels this is the one for you. I can’t wait to see who Marika introduces us to next.
I have to say that Marika Ray is in a league of her own when it comes to romantic comedy, and Set My Heart Bonfire is now my very favorite story from her. Vander is very successful, but his grandmother is his best friend and since she won't move in with him where he's at, he decides to sell his business and come back to their small town. Obviously he's easy to fall for from the jump. Marlo has taken over her family's funeral business since her father had to take a step back due to his health, and she's our resident grump which was super entertaining to be honest. The way Vander & Marlo first met still has me laughing hard and now they're on a new journey together. He's quite taken with her but she's the hard sell despite the fact that she's drawn to him but he never throws in the towel as he's our sunshine character who loves laughing. The sparks are flying like crazy & soon they embark on a friends with benefits situation thinking feeling won't get caught but the best laid plans amirite?! These two are highly entertaining on their own but add in the secondary cast (like his grandma) & my sides ended up hurting from all the laughter. Everyone needs this story in their lives as it will brighten up your day so I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Story Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (0-5) Narration: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 (0-5) Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (0-5) Steam: 🔥🔥🔥☄️(0-5) I bump up for pubic places/outdoor spaces.
What I’m Starry-Eyed Over: 🤩 These narrators, Marie Hawkins & TJ Clark, are a great fit for the personalities in this reverse grumpy sunshine. They do a fantastic job of voicing emotions, especially transitioning from the fun, sultry, and seductive feels to the other feelings of being anxious, mad, sad, and regretful. 🤩 Hilarious meet-cute! I love how they keep teasing each other about it. 🤩 All the encounters and interactions. 🤩 So much chemistry and banter! 🤩 This book keeps me cackling and swooning. 🤩 Zander’s love for his grandma–they are best friends! 🤩 Grandma Milly is so fun and funny! 🤩 Zander is so perfect for Marlo. “So, I’m your dirty secret now, Marlo?” . . . “I’ve always wanted to be a dirty secret!” 🤩 The characterization is fabulous. Marlo is the perfect black cat of a mortician. 🤩 Total standalone in the Blueball Band of Brothers.
What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About: 💫I loved the friends, especially the band guys, but I would have liked to experience more of the town. (Or maybe I was distracted and busy and just didn’t notice–it could totally be me back at work and school.)
Set My Heart Bonfire was so much fun. I adored the quirkiness of Vander and Marlo and the entire Blueball gang. This grumpy/sunshine romance was just the feel-good read that I needed.
“I just need one person to believe in me, Marlo. Someone who sees beyond the jokes and thinks I can do more in life.”
Marlo had always turned guys off with her dark sense of humor and choice of job, but Vander is absolutely fascinated with her dark, snarky humor and cutting remarks. He sees through to the real person underneath and she does the same to him. He presents a façade of the happy-go-lucky, life of the party guy, but he really just wants people to like and accept him. She sees that and encourages him to be himself.
‘For a girl who never valued smiles before, I was finding Vander’s to be priceless.”
Full of found family, laugh out loud moments, the grumpiest of heroine and the most charming hero, Set My Heart Bonfire was a heartfelt humorous read that is big on the feels. I can’t wait to see what is next for this gang.
There are only two things you need to know: Vander and Marlo. Read the book. You will love it, just as I did.
It is hilarious. All the characters – are you listening G-Mil? – have something that they do/say/see that just comes out of nowhere. Don’t get me started on the stair-assist (chairlift) that every senior citizen in Blueball thinks they must try...
I loved Marlo’s snarkiness. She is carrying what seems like the weight of the world on her shoulders. As a reader, I found myself shouting, “You need Vander!!!” but of course, she wasn’t listening. And Vander. He, too, has issues but he is the sweetest, and funniest, hero I’ve read, well, since this author’s last book. He is so very sweet to his grandmother (G-Mil) and is head-over-heels and fascinated by Marlo. And Vander’s and Marlo’s nicknames for each other? Whelp, you’ll just have to read it to find out.
Loved this story. Loved all the characters. Loved Vander and Marlo. These two are made for one another. And to throw in an old cliché: I laughed. I cried. I laughed some more. Great book!
"My evil grin turned decidedly less evil. If I wasn’t careful, I’d actually start liking my new neighbor. He wasn’t the rich, entitled jerk I’d thought he was. His constant joking around puzzled me still, but this perfect body ... was making up for it. Big-time." - Marlo
Marlo Balmero just wants one thing in life (OK, a couple of things) but the most important right now was expanding her family business. I mean, people are DYING to meet her, you know? And she had the perfect plot of land picked out for the expansion. Unfortunately....
“I just need one person to believe in me, Marlo. Someone who sees beyond the jokes and thinks I can do more in life.” - Vander
All Vander Booth wanted was to make his G-Mil's life a little easier. What he DIDN'T want or need was a raven haired, fire eyed Goth girl neighbor who set his libido to permanent inferno mode! Now... If he could just figure out how to convince her what they have can be so much more...
Get out your hankies, cuz this ROM com will make you laugh, make you cry, and will restore your faith in true love.
This is the 4th book in the Blueball Band of Brothers book from Marika Ray and while another wonderful addition to the series can be read as a standalone. Be warned - you will become addicted to this series and the wonderfully fun writing of Ray! This is Marlo and Vander's journey and is a perfect rom-com! Full of laughs and love but more than that, there is emotion and depth to be found as well. Captivating characters - not only in our main two but certain star secondary characters shine extra bright as well. I adore the first meeting which had me giggling uncontrollably. Well written and a delight to read. A reverse grumpy/sunshine - opposites attract read told from dual point of view. Smooth flowing and captivating storyline. You won't want to put this book down and when it's over, you'll be eager to see what's next (or if you haven't already - read the books prior in this series)!
I received a free copy of this book at my request, and I voluntarily provided this review.
Marika Ray is back with another unforgettable and unputdownable installment in her ( Blueball Band Of Brothers Series and man does it just keep getter better and better . Marlo and Vander I just adored these two so much . And phew was the chemistry and the attraction between them off the charts insane . Complete opposites, reverse grumpy sunshine , angst , humor , witty banter , love , passion, second chances, heartbreaking and heartwarming, fun , sweet , sexy family , friendships, unexpected surprises, characters you cannot stop yourself from falling in love with . Set My Heart Bonfire is the type of love story that will make you smile , make you laugh out loud , make you cry like a baby and keep you rooting so freaking hard . When I first met Vander and Marlo I thought these two could not be more different but the more I got to know them and watched them fall in love . Welll I realized they were meant to be , the perfect match 💜💜💜 I cannot recommend this beautifully written love story highly enough
4.5 stars - An undertaker, a millionaire, and a grandma - the perfect trio!
I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, but boy was I in for a delightful surprise. Who knew I'd enjoy a dark humor RomCom so much, but Marlo and Vander were a match made in my heart.
My favorite line was when Marlo said, "When I die, delete my Kindle Library." I laughed so hard at the thought, and then realized I'd want my Kindles distributed to my closest friends cuz they read the same books as me.
Vander is always in a pleasant mood and has time on his hands since he's sold his company and is looking for a new venture while taking care of his grandma. His new neighbor is none other than Marlo who took over the family mortuary business after her dad suffered a heart attack.
Vander and Marlo are complete opposites, but oddly bring the best out of each other, after they drive each other crazy. I laughed so much with this story and loved the oddball side characters around town. Available in KU, this series is a must read!
Marlo has been a favorite of mine since she showed up, and I’ve wondered what sort of man would catch her eye. Look no further than – Vander? A wealthy, goofy, golden retriever of a man who only lives to make people laugh? Well, they say opposites attract.
Only the true story is much deeper and more complicated, and I think one of the best ones Marika’s written lately. Maybe Marlo isn’t really a storm cloud with a black little soul, and maybe Vander cares more about fitting in, having friends, and belonging than he’s willing to let anyone know. When the two start to get to know each other, they quickly discover that they really aren’t so different. The depths that we get to see in each character really bring them to life.
That, and the book is hecking funny – like, laugh out loud, side eye from strangers funny. Overall a great read and another fantastic member of the Blueball Band of Brothers.
Readers, do yourself a favor and get this book! You will love Vander and Marlo’s story. Vander moves to Blueball to be closer to G-Mil, his grandmother. He first meets Marlo after she chases some teenagers getting frisky away from the cemetery. They leave their bubble machine and candle behind. Marlo is having so much fun popping bubbles, she knocks the candle over, starting a fire. She uses her skirt to put out the fire, so Vander catches her in her granny panties, lol. He calls her Bubbles after that. I’m not going to leave any spoilers, but I will say these characters are the best and are absolutely perfect for each other. You’ll also love G-Mil, but you never know what’s going to come out of her mouth. Be prepared for some laugh out loud moments, but you may also get a little teary eyed at times. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and this my voluntary and honest review.
Marika Ray writes romcoms that deliver big laughs, huge sighs and sexy shenanigans like no one else! I am a huge fan of her writing and would need a couple of hours to tell you why and it would involve spreadsheets and flow charts. In the interest of saving you some time, I’m simply going tell you to READ HER BOOKS!
By title alone, you know that 𝗦𝗘𝗧 𝗠𝗬 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗕𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘 is already going to be a quirky kind of love story. How quirky is the only question. Marlo and Vander are as opposite as night and day. He is the light to her darkness and she is the little black rain cloud to his blue sky. These differences bring them together in a spectacular fashion and it works beautifully. They are just brilliant together. I found them to be exactly what I never new I needed in a book couple. They’ve made my Top Book Couples list and will be there for a very long time!
I’m giving Vander, Marlo and G-Mil the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR and Enjoy!
I cannot express in words how much I loved this fucking book.
I love a Black Cat/Golden Retriever couple and throw in a meet cute in a cemetery while the FMC is popping bubbles in her underwear?! SOLD.
I've been curious about Marlo from the start and I think she's a top tier FMC for me. I love that she runs the family funeral home. I love that she's not a ray of sunshine. I love that she rocks a RBF. I can relate to her on numerous levels. And I love that SHE is the one who had to pull off the groveling at the end.
Vander. I love him. I love that he's goofy but it's obvious that he uses it to protect himself. My heart broke for the little boy who just wanted love and ended up with parents who just didn't understand him. I'm so glad he had his G-Mil to show him that love. I just want to give him the biggest hug ever.
And I had to laugh at Gannon asking right off the bat if Vander could play an instrument. I love how obsessed that man is when it comes to his band.
“Marlo put up a tough front, but she was still just a girl, wanting her dragon to fight for her.”
This series is fantastic and Set My Heart Bonfire does not disappoint. I laughed so many times…the banter, antics and overall dialogue is fantastic!
Vander and Marlo both have their quirks, are unique and are so good for one another. They are both looking for acceptance and not to be judged based on their work/status.
I really enjoyed this story. Marlo and Vander are complete opposites but they come to appreciate their difference, support one another and find out they have more in common than they thought.
The cast of characters is amazing - G-Mil and her friends are so charming, crazy and hilarious. The knitting scene made me laugh until I cried. Lol
I highly recommend this book and the others in the series.
I love all things quirky and different and this latest installment from Blueball really hits the spot. Marlo runs the family undertaker business which immediately had me rushing to read this. She's dark but hopeful, sarcastic yet kind, a misfit that fits - she has a girl group and their extended others but still feels she's on the outside, looking in. I identified with her straight away being a bit of a black sheep myself, and couldn't help but cheer her on throughout the book. All dark princesses deserve their understanding, handsome dragons... If the first meeting of these two doesn't hook you, you're crazy; who can resist a graveyard, a bubble machine, granny pants and a laundry accident? If that isn't convincing you, then the wild grandmother, geriatric shenanigans and perfect banter should. A must read for all misfits.
“When I get done with you, you’re going to love your last name.”
I love Marlo and Vander! He’s the happy and sunshine and she’s the dark and grumpy and I’m so here for it!
Marlo just took over as the Blueball Undertaker. Her Dad had a heart attack recently so she took over the family business. Vander moved to be closer to his Grandma and is hoping to find a new business venture.
From the very first time they met, all their interactions have been interesting. There was something about the grumpy Marlo that just calls to Vander. He just wants to be around her and finds that he wants to see more of her smiles. Marlo shouldn’t want to be around Vander, he’s too “happy” and smiley” for her taste but he seems to genuinely want to be around her and isn’t bothered by some of her quirks.
“I’m not a fan of happy people. They bother me with their constant grins and rainbows coming out of their ears.”
Opposites do attract because Marlo and Vander are perfect for each other! Their banter is hilarious and their chemistry is off the charts! Be ready to laugh out loud and fall in love!
This small town reverse grumpy/sunshine is full laughter with a sprinkling and of dark humor, bromance, swoon and spice!
