A Most Entertaining Dose Of Wisdom!

The reader should remember the fundamental basis for this Pocket Guide to Keeping Your Sanity While Raising Feral Kids, as its author, Megan McCusker Hill, PhD, exquisitely states: "So, in many ways, I wrote this book for myself - to navigate the dark trenches I often find myself in, to remind myself that I'm not alone in this." To that degree, one should feel privileged to peek inside her diary of life. What this small book might lack in literary perfection, it more than makes up for in candidness, authenticity, true confessionalism, and laughter. The book is meant for real people, real parents, and real lives - rather than for detached onlookers. Don't fret over minor grammatical or punctuation errors. Worry more about your own sanity.

With that in mind, dive into the deep end of living with feral kids - a pool shared by many. Appropriately, Dr. McCusker Hills begins with Understanding the Feral Child. After summarizing what is truly meant by the term (as opposed to popular opinion), the author's subsequent conclusion turned this review from a 4-star rating to a 5. She hooked me with: "… the term 'feral' didn't mean out of control; it meant their children had unique needs and expressions." From there on, I became a privileged spectator, honored to be included. This book is not meant for parents only. Any child who once was feral will now feel fully embraced, understood, loved, and sane. Who could ask for more?

"Feral" in the title of this book is what caught my attention. My niece has a feral child. I bought this book for her. I read it myself hoping for some insight. The author has done a brilliant job of expressing what it's like to Mother to this type of personality in a kid. It is not a negative term. It's more of a description of their energy and personality.

The descriptions, the flow and organization of this book are on point. I appreciate the suggestions of finding a supportive community and being a part of it. A good reminder about self-care and personal growth is emphasized. I especially like the chapter on managing conflict. Mothers of feral children have to summon patience. That is a Momma superpower in this case.

This is a wonderfully written, short read, book that has enlightened me. I will be practicing patience and have fostered more empathy for my niece. This book makes a great gift. Well worth it!
