A top allergy specialist provides a simple holistic program that helps a broad range of allergy sufferers heal themselves naturally.
THE 7 DAY ALLERGY MAKEOVER is written for people who want to take an active role in their own healing. The book lays out action-oriented, step-by-step instructions on uncovering the root cause of allergies, and makes simple but specific changes that can stop allergy symptoms from recurring.
What began as a mother’s desperation to save her son has led to a comprehensive program that helps a broad range of allergy sufferers heal themselves naturally. As an allergy specialist, Dr. Susanne Bennett sees roughly 100 patients a week, from children to movie stars. They come to her after exhausting every resource: doctors, medicines, creams, shots, you name it. They suffer from hives, sneezing, headaches, asthma, muscle aches, swelling and digestive problems, and more. THE 7 DAY ALLERGY MAKEOVER, based on 23 years of Dr. Bennett’s clinical experience, is an easy-to-implement and transformational plan for eliminating allergies from your life forever.
Each chapter in THE 7 DAY ALLERGY MAKEOVER focuses on a different aspect of health and environment for a person suffering from allergies--nutrition, air quality, living environment, water, body hygiene, and emotional and mental stresses.
This book helped me alleviate allergy by 60%. Many thanks to the courageous mother and author who delved into the medical world to help cure her child and plenty of readers.
This is a necessary book for a lot of people! It's unfortunate how little everyone knows about allergies in a world with 10% of the population afflicted with them periodically. I have seen people struggling with allergies, sneezing, and wheezing endlessly without trying to find a cause for it. I was one of those people too! The bad reviews herein point out how expensive and unnecessary the steps in the book are to perform. While that's true, I have benefitted majorly due to the very same list of expensive advice. If you complain about how the solutions are too expensive, well, your allergies are just not severe enough. The author accurately portrays how doctors are only interested in treating the symptoms and writing a prescription. I have faced the same for 6 months now before I researched and solved my issues myself. I am highly allergic to a dust mite species - D. farinae. I had to change a lot of my habits apart from buying a dehumidifier-cum-air purifier, and hypoallergenic sheets for my bedroom (and sadly, throwing away my upholstery furniture and curtains out the window - the curtains are literally outside of my window now :P), and I'm alive with absolutely no prescriptions or symptoms!
A highly recommended book that I'd even implore you to recommend to everyone you've seen struggling with these issues. A very good starting point to narrow down your culprits. Thank Susanne for that!
Ever since moving to Texas over three years ago, my allergies went from occasional annoyance to a daily bane to my existence. I am on conventional meds right now (Zyrtec and an antihistamine nasal spray) but am interested in more natural ways to not only treat my symptoms, but more importantly, figure out what is at the root of my allergic symptoms. This book was a useful guide that looked at common allergens, many of which I am exposed to daily. Each chapter looks at a different area that can wreak havoc on your body, including the quality of your water (many extra things that can be in it that can cause GI and skin issues), food (specifically milk and gluten), air (pollution, dust), your kitchen (pesticides on produce, mold on expired leftovers in the fridge), and the role of stress on our ability to fight infection and allergies. I wish there was more evidence-based research cited rather than mostly anecdotal evidence from her career as a naturopathic allergy specialist. It would have made the book, which had a ton of great information and practical implementation, more credible. Overall, it got me thinking a lot about a holistic approach to battling my allergies.
Pretty lame, honestly. While the research seems solid, the solutions are expensive and hardly novel. Excuse me while I go buy a space suit with built in HEPA and water filters so that nothing may come into contact with my body.
I would recommend this book to all allergy sufferers as there are some interesting hypotheses, useful information, tips worth to try. That's what I was looking for personally. Medical websites already cover universally-accepted methods and connections about allergies. I'm interested in hearing more arguments, hypotheses, things to try, etc
I would also recommend not taking everything too seriously. Because the book also involves factually false claims here and there, contradicting statements, tips that would only apply a group of people, not mentioning some other possibilities.
Some examples:
- To be fair diet arguments are never flawless. This book included. The book says it would be good if we eliminated dairy from our diet. Talks about lactose intolerance, the infamous hormones in the milk, etc But then includes meat although usually the science that talks against dairy also talks against meat. (My personal opinion is that no one diet is the best choice for everyone as everyone's metabolism, food sensitivies, sources and all are different.)
- Not enough mention of (if any!) allergy tests. That was the most confusing part of the book for me. The wording is like as if we ALL should follow the tips regardless of what kind of allergy we have. Allergy is the body overreacting to something that is usually harmless. If your body doesn't overreact to pollen or pet dander, neither is harmful to those who aren't allergic to them, why would you force your poor dog out of your bedroom or not purchase those flowers you like to buy? If the argument here "MAYBE you are allergic to them?" there are allergy tests that tell you if you have pollen, dog/cat allergy or not. If the argument "Yeah but quite a lot of people ARE allergic to them" you can be allergic to anything. Just pick something and some people are allergic to that. There is even water and sun allergy. "Some people are allergic to this so YOU stay away from it too" makes no sense and you would need to stay away from literally everything in the world.
- Not enough mention of (if any!) how some psychological disorders can mimic allergic reactions. Anxiety/panic attacks for example can also cause shortness of breath, skin problems, sleep issues, fatigue. Same with sicknesses. Everyone knows hay fever, an allergic reaction, is very similar to having a cold symptoms-wise. But cold isn't the only thing. There are some short patient stories in the book and honestly since there was no mention of the patient ever taking an allergy test, it's really not clear if the patient got rid of his problems because he really was allergic and the author's tip worked or say he had anxiety disorder and had a placebo effect with the suggestion, or had a cold/vitamin deficiency that got better on its own over time.
- I think anything about health, including allergies, should be judged differently for children and adults in this kind of books. Author shares child patients' stories a lot, including her own son. Google "allergies children vs adults"
- Finally, this is in no way a simple program nor it would take you 7-days. Some of the suggestions as the author herself says are expensive, if you were to follow every suggestion in the book it would cost you a not-small fortune and unless you can change your entire house in like a day or two (or move into a different place), you will definitely need much more than 7 days.
There aren't many books out there that don't repeat everything you can find on a webMD article. So this book is still worth to read to hear the argument and you can definitely read a few good tips and some very things easy to try like not wearing shoes at home.
I think there's some good information in this book but I don't agree with everything. Just because she has studied allergies extensively doesn't make her an expert in curing them necessarily as well as the other health tips she provides.
For instance, she invites us to eat small meals many times during the day whereas actually, there are some studies that point to the benefits of fasting to improve your immune system.
Also her suggestion of constantly taking a showers may not be very sustainable or good for the environment.
Another thing that I found that helps with my seasonal allergies is using a humidifier to clean the air and I don't recall her making any mention of that. Seems like she advises against it because of the possibility of mold.
Most of the ideas in this book are pretty common detox ideas. The success profiles are rather simple - eliminate this one thing from your diet/environment and the person improves. The ideas are generally good suggestions and it can't hurt to implement them. The suggestions will take longer than 7 days and require an investment. But if you do implement all of these ideas and you are still suffering, then you will need a medical detective to help figure it out. A good place to start, but don't assume it will solve the problem.
If you want to get really obsessed with addressing allergies, read this book! It's terrific and very detailed. From when to open your windows for fresh air, how to clean your living space, what to throw away, and what to invest in, this book will guide you through the entire process. I did it and I'm glad. No meds and I'm allergy free! Hurrah!
Although the program would be challenging to do (and I'm reading additional books before I make any changes), what I liked about this book is that it truly lays out exactly what the author recommends and has seen work.
