Sue-Ellen Welfonder & Allie Mackay

Sue-Ellen MacDuffie was born and raided in Florida. She is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.

Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.

Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.

Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.

Laddie Isle, Scotland
Spring 14000

This is the second book in the Scandalous Scots series and again Ms, Welfonder books are always magnificent you can feel her love of Scotland both the people, lore, history and land . This is Roag the Bears story, in the story of the illegitimate friends who becomes members of King Robert's Fenris Guards. These brave, honorable and fearless men will go on dangerous missions and do whatever is required of them. Sometimes this requires different accents and identities for the better good of Scotland.

This series continues for those who read To Love a Highlander in book one of Scandalous Scots Series where that book was about Morley the fox. In To Desire a Highlander, this is book two where Roag the Bear takes the identity of of a deceased Donell MacDonnell Cheftain not realizing he is betrothed! Now the betrothed was done five years earlier and hasn't seen or heard from him since which was just fine with the independent Lady Gillian MacGuire also known as the spitfire of the Highlands!

Gillian MacGuire remembers her betrothed as an onion breathed, yellow stained, overweight, smelly and unkept greedy man and although it's been five years she is not a dummy and realizes before long that this man is an imposter! Of course Roag hates the position he had been put in an no one told him that he is betrothed when he accepted this mission. One wee important part that one Alexander Stewart, brother of the King forgot to mention. As he has assumed the identity of one Donell MacDonnell a dishonorable man who died escaping prison as he was far from honest and honorable man. Gillian is also known as the spitfire of the Highlands. When she realized she can't buy him off with enough riches to line his pockets nicely is when Gillian starts putting the two and two together, as the real MacDonnell loved filling his pockets over anything. This man was fit, muscular, clean and smelled good actually the opposite of MacDonell as he was honorable. Also he was making Gillian feel things she knows Donell MacDonnell not capable to stir these types of feeling. Roag who has stopped wenching with his men as of late realizes this woman one Gillian MacGuire has bewitches him like no other and make him feel things and only after sharing a couple kisses that leaves him spellbound!

A must read you won't be able to put down beautifully written and my heart went out for young those boy who lost his life long ago and always wanted a dog but lost his life before that happened.

Again Ms Welfonder and her love of animals pulled at my heartstrings with the ancient Skog the dog, Gillian's best friend and also befriended one boy ghost himself the laddie of the isle. I also love the style of Ms. Welfonder's writing when she mixes true fact, Scottish lore in her historical fiction, the combination is truly magnificent! Another enchanting, fun, entertaining read that will enchants you and sweeps you off your feet. I know it did me with lots of twists and turns that you can't wait to see what happens next . You can read her books in series order or as a stand alone book but one thing is certain is her stories are always magical! Again I would give it a bazillion stars if allowed it was that magnificent if a story and read!

I loved To Desire a Highlander By Sue-Ellen Welfonder one you truly don't want to miss and I highly recommend and I know Sue-Ellen Welfonder fans like myself have been waiting for this story and believe me you won't be disappointed. It is a fun filled spectacular read that will melt your heart and curl your toes! I absolutely loved To Desire a Highlander by Sue-Ellen Welfonder

To Desire a Highlander by Sue-Ellen Welfonder is the second in her Scandalous Scots series. It can be read easily as a stand alone book.

The story is about Roag the Bear. He works for the King as part of a group of men who keep the King and the seas safe. There have been a lot of the King's ships sunk and the best place to get a good view of the sea is a place called Laddie's Isle. The island is owned by Donnel MacDonnell, and upon discovering his death, Roag is tasked with taking on the identity of Donnel enabling him to reside on Laddie's Isle as it's Laird and keep a close eye on the 'action' at sea.

Unfortunately things don't go as simply as he had hoped because he discovers that he, as Donnell, has been betrothed to Gillian MacGuire for 5 years, and her father and brothers expect him to live up to that betrothal. Immediately after the betrothal was announced Donnell went off to sea and this is the first time Gillian or her family have seen him since then. The genuine Donnel was a beast of a man with less than acceptable hygiene standards. Gillian didn't want to be betrothed to him in the first place, but as done in the day, respected her father's wishes. When she realises that he is at last coming to claim her, she is sick at the thought of being married to such an awful man and hopes to be able to pay him off so that he doesn't marry her, and will give her passage to Glasgow. Roag hopes that the time he has supposedly been away is a long enough a time for them all to believe that he is who he says he is. His hopes are in vain because after a handfasting ceremony that they are tricked into, Gillian tells Roag that she knows he isn't Donnel. Far from a beast of a man, Roag is handsome, well built, clean, and courteous. All things that the real Donnel never was.

Roag can't tell Gillian why he is impersonating Donnel, and of course, she thinks the worst. He is worried that she will tell her family that he isn't who he says he is, which in turn would ruin his mission, so he has to threaten to kill her family before they have a chance to leave the island if she doesn't keep his secret and also doesn't pretend to be happily in love with her new husband. She is horrified that a man that she secretly admits to being attracted to, could be such an evil man. From there on we watch as their relationship develops, which is interesting to see because they are both adamant that they don't like each other, while the story continues about Roag's mission and if he manages to succeed with it.

I fully enjoyed the story, and I especially love that there was a touch of the paranormal in it as well. A ghost of a small boy lives on the island and helps to keep people safe at sea by warning them of danger. Some heed his warnings, others are terrified at seeing a ghost, don't, and end up dying at sea. He doesn't have a huge part in the book, but the part he plays is vital, and the ending involving him is a very emotional one. I definitely recommend this book and personally look forward to reading more of the series.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

#2 in the exciting "Scandalous Scots" series, but can be read as a stand alone. WOW! What can one say about a brilliantly written story by one of my all-time favorite Scottish Historical Romance authors? Ms. Welfonder introduced me to Scottish Historical Romance years ago. Thank goodness she enlightened me to this fascinating genre. She is my heroine of Scottish Romance, myths, legends, alpha Highland Warriors, feisty lasses, and passion.
Now... "To Desire a Highlander" is simply perfectly written. Fast paced, with a emotional climatic ending. Brilliantly written with engaging, charming, charismatic characters and a powerful, emotional, scandalous and intriguing storyline. There are many secrets, of course, passion, danger, drama, mystery and Highland intrigue. Unforgettable and memorable characters, passionate romance and intrigue makes for a wickedly delicious tale.
I absolutely love this series and can't wait to see what happens in her next grand adventure. Ms. Welfonder, is a talented, and amazing storyteller, one who pulls readers into her stories, and brings Scotland to her readers on every page of her brilliantly written Scottish Historical Romance. Another hit, in my opinion. A must read for fans of Scottish Romance, Historical Romance, Highlander's and the lasses who capture their hearts. Well done, Ms. Welfonder!! Another keeper!

Let me tell you, after I read the blurb, I honestly didn’t think this plot would work. I mean the hero is taking someone else’s identity! This can only go bad, right?! Wrong. I was so wrong. It all worked out unbelievably well, and I should have known better than to question Sue-Ellen’s power of plotting a tale that is passionate and fun.

As usual Sue-Ellen enchants her readers not just with a well told tale of love and woo, but what I find fascinating is that she never fails to paint me a picture of that long ago time in Scotland’s history by giving me a taste of the life her characters lived day in and day out.

With some intriguing and entertaining twists and turns, combined with plenty of humor, she weaves this beautiful love story to any romance lover’s satisfaction.

If you’re still in that dreaded #Droughtlander mode, you need to pick this one up!

From beginning to end, a fabulous book. I have read many authors and love many authors. But it is rare to come across a book so well done that when you sit and read it you can see everything in vivid details. Only a few authors I know can do that. Its like watching a movie through a book. I had a hard time putting this book down, but I do have to sleep every once in a while.

You laugh and have fun all the way through. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Watch while both H/H learn what time and duty does to them. See how she see's a new man she never knew and he falls for what he did not think he needed.

Gillian is a free spirit who isn't sure the man she's with is the right one for her, but once he returns he's a changed man.so much so that he makes the blood in her veins boil with want & passion .
That is until she finds out this man is not who he claims to be !!

This was a very exciting highland romance to read. It had everything within it's pages passion , romance, emotional angst, deceit, intimate sensual scenes between the characters lies & action & adventure.
The characters were likeable and the story flowed beautifully.
I cannot wait to read the next book in this series by Sue- Ellen Welfonder. She knows how to write a Scottish highland romance like no other .

Sweet honey nectar I loved Roag, he was a manly man and Jesus he did things to me, “you’ll imagine what would happen if I kissed you elsewhere,” he warned, flicking his gaze to the place he meant, despising himself for shocking her. He can be honest and it's so hot, “I want you badly, lass.” He whipped his arm around her, pulling her hard against him. “So much that I’m ready to cast aside everything that’s aye mattered to me." I liked this book it was a good read.

Although there was a bit too much time spent in each of the main characters minds, this was still enjoyable. The author managed to walk the fine line between too much brogue and just a smattering of words, which gave a nice 'feel' to the story. I enjoyed this.

Review:

Sue-Ellen Welfonder delivers the reader into the lives of the medieval Highlander and has the ability through words to make you believe you are there. She describes the setting so clearly that the Scottish brogue comes through the winds of the highlands and the ruggedness of the terrain is visible to the reader.

I loved this story as it again shows a high spirited woman who in spite of her destiny in life, which she can’t control because of her sex, is independent and strong. Gillian MacGuire has been betrothed by her father to Donell MacDonell and at the beginning of the story she awaits in dread, MacDonell’s return after a 5 year absence. Determined she will not be wed to him she devises a plan that should free her of him. However the man getting off the ship claiming to be Donell is certainly not him. Who is the imposter that is invading her heart?

Roag is on a mission and under false identity. The crown has asked him to find who is sinking the royal ships. They failed to warn him that the man whose identity he is using is betrothed and when he lands, Roag finds himself wed to Lady Gillian, a lass who fires his groins. He knows that he cannot have her and protect her at the same time. When he sees the ghost “Laddie of the Isles” he knows that things will go from bad to worse. The problem is Roag realizes he does not want to go back to his previous life.

This is a story of battles, intrigue, love of both family and the lands, with a wee bit of ancient magic thrown in. The story is fast paced and a delight to read and I truly loved the ending. I would highly recommend Ellen-Sue Welfonder to anyone who loves to read Scottish historical fiction and I know I will look to read other books by this author.

**I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review**

I liked this book. It has a bit of everything - action, deception, hate to love, dogs, long lost relatives, steamy love scenes and ghosts.

Lady Gillian's long lost betrothed is finally back and ready to claim his bride. Gillian wants nothing to do with this - she forms a plan to bribe her greedy intended into releasing her from their vows and helping her get to her family in Glasgow. Ah, the best laid plans...

Roag the Bear, member of the King's secret guard, lands on Laddie's Isle, not to claim Gillian (who he doesn't even knows exists)but to find out who is sinking the King's ships. He has taken the identity of Donnell MacDonnell who is recently deceased and the laird of the Isle. To say he is surprised to find himself handfasted to a beautiful woman who wants nothing more than to be away from him is an understatement.

The book slows a little bit here - Gillian is exceptionally bright and realizes almost immediately that Roag is not her disgusting intended. Roag is forced to make Gillian believe that he will kill her family if she doesn't cooperate fully with him. This does not endear him to Gillian - who acts like a shrew for a good portion of the book. Roag tells her why her plan to go to Glasgow will not work and refuses to let her leave. Gillian doesn't want to go back to her home on Sway, because of her new stepmother - but she knows she can't stay alone on the isle after Roag leaves either. This part of the plot didn't really make sense to me. I know why she doesn't want to go home - but as a young woman, she really doesn't have any options - yet she acts like she does. Even after Roag reveals all to her - she continues to act like a spoiled child - she is not quite nasty, but definitely not friendly and she is still plotting her "escape".

Slowly, Gillian starts to see the real Roag and begins to fall in love. This is where the pace of the story picks up and really takes off. The tension that has been simmering between these two just explodes and it was worth the wait.

A twist near the end of the book reveals the villain sinking the King's ship and Roag believes his time with Gillian is at an end. He wishes it wasn't so, but feels he has nothing to offer her. Another twist solves this dilemma.

The book is really well written and flows pretty well. The book held my interest throughout - even when the story slows, it was still a page-turner. The love scenes are not quite as hot as other books I have read by this author - but they are warm and very well done. Characters from the previous book make a brief appearance and Grim (LOVE HIM!) brings Roag a final surprise that really touched my heart. The epilogue was very sweet and a perfect ending for this book.

This book, while part of a series, can easily be read as a stand alone with no problems. I would happily recommend this book.

ATTN GRABING HOLD ON TIL THE LAST PAGE

Sue Ellen Welfonder is one of my most favorite treasures of an author. To Desire A Highlander is the second book in this Scandalous Scot series. Capturing the reader’s attention from the first page, this fast paced adventure pulls the reader in allowing them to become part of the story as they mentally watch the story unfold. As with all of her other books, this one is a permanent keeper shelf read and reread.

The Spitfire of the Isles, Lady Gillian MacGuire, has been unwillingly betrothed for the last five years to Donnell MacDonnell, a neighboring laird. She didn’t like him when she was first betrothed to him and the past years hasn’t changed that in the least. The MacDonnell, as word was brought to Gillian’s father, after being gone from his keep for the five years, is now on his way home. What better surprise could there be, thinks her father, than for them to meet her betrothed when he arrives. However, she has a plan to bribe him to break the betrothal and cancel the wedding.

Roag The Bear is a member of the King’s Fenris Guard. Donnell MacDonnell is now dead. Following the King’s orders, Roag and his men are to arrive at the MacDonnell keep and carry out the mission of discovering who is attacking and sinking the King’s ships. He has been schooled on who the MacDonnell was and has become familiar with surrounding neighbors. However, there is one stumbling block. He has no idea the MacDonnell was betrothed, and especially not to the beautiful siren glaring at him from the shore. Sparks fly between these two characters and it is never dull as they become familiar and get to really know each other. Gillian definitely knows something is very off with her betrothed and she will find out what it is.

You will want no interruptions when you begin reading this highlander tale. I await the next book in this series with great anticipation as I have no doubt it will be just as great as book one and two. I highly recommend this book and anything else written by Sue Ellen Welfonder to anyone who enjoys reading romance and wants to escape from everyday life for a while.

Lady Gillian MacGuire is dreading the return of her betrothed. Promised to Donell MacDonnell five years ago, she is hoping that she can talk him into releasing her from the betrothal when he returns. But when she is finally face to face with Donell, he doesn't seem to be the same man. Where the Donell of five years ago repulsed her, this feels nothing but attraction for the Donell before her now.

Roag the Bear has taken on the identity of the deceased Donell MacDonnell because of a mission for the Fenris Guard. He didn't know that the man had a fiance waiting for his return. But after one kiss, Roag is smitten and not ready to give up Gillian.

What will happen when the truth about his identity is revealed?

I really enjoyed this book. I was intrigued by Roag after reading To Love a Highlander and I was not disappointed by Welfonder's story for him.

Roag had gone undercover many times for the Fenris, but this time was different. He knew that he had a job to do, but because of the way he came to feel for Gillian, he had a hard time justifying his lying to her. It was interesting reading his back in forth with himself. He wanted to reveal the truth to Gillian, but he wasn't allowed to reveal his mission to anyone outside the Fenris group.

Gillian had to be a strong woman to survive growing up with so many brothers. I think her upbringing helped her to be the perfect match for Roag. She knew upon meeting Roag that he wasn't who he said he was and she didn't stay quiet about it.

I can't wait to read the rest of the stories about the members of the Fenris Guard!

Thanks go out to Grand Central Publishing via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

The year is 1400 and Roag the Bear is on a mission for his king as part of the super-secret Ferris group to Laddie's Isle in Scotland's Western Islands. There on the "uninhabited" island he's to take on the identity of Donnell MacDonnell a member of the group who died and who is owner of the remote island. Upon arriving however, he's met by a fiery, red-headed lass named Lady Gillian MacGuire and who's his betrothed! Flanked by her many brothers and her wily father, they are tricked into a handfasting that pleases neither. The mission is put in jeopardy when Gillian tells Roag that she knows that he's not Donnell. An epic battle of wills ensues during the wedding night as each will not give. Roag can not reveal his true self and Gillian won't go along with the situation created by her father. But when sparks like that fly, passion soon follows and it's Roag's care for Gillian's aged dog Skog that begins to change the situation. But just who is sinking the king's ships?

I was given this book for an honest review and I have endeavored to do so. It is the second in the series of the Scandolous Scots series. Just like the first, there's plenty of action, romance, and a touch of an unearthly being who helps people out. Skog plays a large part in this story and is such a joy to read about. If you enjoyed Sorley's story, you'll enjoy this one too. I give it 4.5 stars!

Lady Gillian MacGuire has been betrothed to Donell MacDonell for 5 years and she only saw him once at the time of their betrothal and the little that she saw, knew and smelt ~ she did not like. After a span of 5 years he returned to Laddie's Isle in the Hebrides where he is the Laird and to meet~up with Gillian and her family. But Donell has changed so drastically in the eyes and nose of his betrothed. Gone was the messy unkempt and lice~infested beard, the onion breath, the dirty fingernails and the flabs. Gillian now see a well~muscled man with a neat well~trimmed beard, clean and apparently with a very large dose of teasing scintillating personality bent on vexing her. Here we have a secret mission for the Crown, a reluctant bride and an even more reluctant groom each with their own agenda and him harboring even more secrets, a glowing~in~blue spectre of the lone survivor boy of a shipwreck at a time that passed into legend, the Fenris Guard (a Brotherhood of bastards and men of special skills in the service of Alex Stewart) and sundry other necessary events and characters to make this book a Good read.

What a Tale.

I gAve this a four star review because Roag the Bear and Gillian the Spitfire, were just meant to be no matter what. He had a secret to uphold and Lady Gillian riled and tempted him tremendously. He needed to keep his wits about him, since for now he was the keeper of Laddies Isle.

Lady Gillian did not want to see her betrothed. After five years of being his betrothed...She was hoping he would never return. Now she must do her duty, but she was willing to convince him to allow her freedom and forget the union.

When she saw him again, he was not what she remembered. She was not called the Spitfire of the Isles for nothing.

The book took too long though to see any passionate moments between these two characters. For me book one was much better. This one was just O.K. this is why only 4 Stars. I look forward to the next book. I wonder who it will be Calean or Andrew?

Excellent book!!! Not only does this bring about a romance story but it also shares an very interesting mystery all of its own. Lady Gillian MacGuire is a great heroine and very lovable right form the start. You feel a sense of pity for her position and hope for her future. But equally so Roag the Bear grabs at your heart strings even more with his own plight. His situation draws you near to sympathy for him. Almost as soon as they were thrown together I awaited them becoming a couple. Was I ever pleased with the way it was brought together.

But I feel that not mentioning maybe the main character of this story would be a awful shame. I feel that this story would be nothing if not for a young ghost child named Hamish Martin. Looking at things through his eyes was very unique and a cool idea.

I think that anyone who enjoys historical romance novels should give this one a try. I also want to extend a fond thank you to the Author for such a wonderful read.

What a kick butt story! I loved it from the first page and couldn't put it down. The characters were tremendous! They were strong and enduring. They were real life and even with all their strengths they had their weaknesses and insecurities. Roag was a great hero with duty and honor on his mind. He tried to be harsh and rude, but it just wasn't in him. He had such a kind heart and soul and Gillian brought it out in him. I loved Gillian. For once a historical romance novel had a strong woman from the start to the finish of the book. She loved Roag but she didn't have to depend on him to breathe. She knew what could happen, yet stepped up to the plate. I like the ghost part of the story too, the end made me cry. Roag learned the value of friends and family and most of all his loyalty to his friends benefitted him in the end. Great read!

4 1/2 stars!!!

Gillian is trying desperately to deny her attraction to Roag and he knows it so every chance he gets he needles her until she's at her wits end. Their banter keeps me smiling with bursts of laughter.

I adore this series! Two souls that are destined for each other, friends old and new, and a wee ghostie bring this story together in a tale that will leave you feeling as if you actually stepped inside the pages into another place in time. From the moment I caught myself squinting my eyes as Gillian stared into the fog from the shore, to the moment when happiness surrounded a well deserving soul who's peace is at hand, I was enraptured with Sue-Ellen's writing.

I love Sue-Ellen Wellfonder books, the way she writes sweeps you into the stories and this 2nd book in the Scandalous Scot series is no different, it's exciting, you can see the waves crashing, smell the salt in the air from the seas and just immerse yourself in the whole of it. The characters are like real people who you are standing next to, everything comes alive. There was no way I could put this down, I was hooked from the very first page and it is definitely on my Keeper shelf so I can go back and read it again and again. I think you would be the same.

I won a copy of this book on Goodreads and it was a very good book. The characters were interesting and I loved Roag the Bear. He is so sexy and Lady Gillian Macguire lives up to hep reputation as a Spitfire. I found it highly entertaining that no one told him he was assuming the identity of an engaged man. The was Ms. Welfonder describes Scotland makes you love it and long to visit the wonderful and wild country.

I was given this Arc for a honest review. Well I honestly loved it. And only wished I had read the first one too. This book stands alone. But I am sure I would have enjoyed the first book too. Sue-Ellen brings you to Laddies Island. And you can feel the salt misting your face. Roag is a hunk. And just the man Gillian needs. And I Expecially loved, Skog, and Gillian's love for her fur baby. I highly recommend this book !!!

Mistaken Identity is a blessing in disguise. Sue-Ellen Welfonder has done a magical job of giving us an intriguing and compelling book. She has strong characters that have depth and heart. I enjoy all of her books as she give you a colleague of genres in one book, a little mystery mixed with drama, mixed with historical romance and endearing love concurs all.

Gillian and Roag are amazing. This book grabbed my attention from the very first page and I really enjoyed it! I'm not a fan of paranormal elements but this book is so entertaining and the paranormal element is so subtle that I enjoyed it as well.

The descriptions are vivid, the characters well developed and the sroty flows nicely. A real pleasure!

This book was unremarkable, as soon i was done with it i promptly forgot about it. I somehow expected more but it just dragged and dragged and nothing happened. I have enjoyed some of her other books but this one just didnt do it for me.

I love historical romances. This is the PERFECT example of why I love them so much. These two were made for each other. There passion in palpable. I can't wait to read the next in the series.
