A mortal with a devastating illness. A prince with deadly powers. And a realm full of dangerous secrets.
I'm playing a desperate game, and it's one I'm not meant to win.
In a world divided between mortals and beings with supernatural abilities, enemies Prince Kasimir and Princess Natalya are forced into an engagement to bring peace between their kingdoms.
Kasimir is a powerful being with deadly abilities, which wouldn't be such an issue if he could control his anger. He must reign in his hatred for mortals if he's to solve a string of mysteries, otherwise his nation—and the realm—will fall extinct.
Natalya is a mortal with a devastating illness she must hide if she's to gather information to destroy the kingdom that has been razing her lands and killing her people—Kasimir's kingdom. But she must hurry before her illness drags her to her grave, or all hope is lost.
As Kasimir and Natalya race to accomplish their hidden agendas before their wedding day, they uncover secrets that get them both second-guessing—about everything.
Berlyn Hayes is an American author who loves reading and writing YA and NA books, particularly in the fantasy, dystopian, and sci-fi genres. She learned Spanish while living in Boston, Massachusetts for a year and a half and was a two-time state power tumbling champion before receiving four major knee surgeries. .my thoughts. was this book bad? no, but was this book good? yes.
in my opinion this book is actually enjoyable.
we follow our female character Natalya, who had no sense of freedom, with unable to go outside the castle walls, all she does was read and practice archery.
and Kasimir, the Prince and The Mark of Death, was someone with anger issues, who would destroy anything that is infront of his face therefore the name given to him.
but it is more of a task when they both are supposed to be married to each other. how would they indeed navigate challenges when they both have hated each other's existence?
The characters were yes, well written. the first chapter had hooked me with immense interest as I read through it. the world building was even beautifully done.
Natalya, is a stubborn character. She can go lengths to do anything she can to support her Da. Seeing his distress and the destruction the prince caused, she tries to shoot him the first time they meet accidentally. Oh did I mention she was suffering from an illness? it was new and engaging, but the way she was, stubbornly fearless was what I liked.
Even when she was not in her kingdom but his, and yet when she was mistreated she took most of it calmly never snapping or crying.
Prince Kasimir, well, he had anger issues, which drew me in, because I wanted to see the reason why he was like that + how does he manage to control it in the latter part. well the former I got to know. He had indeed hatred for mortals. but the hatred suddenly disappearing much made me a bit confused.
they both have hated each other yet they didn't knew many things that were involved inside.
the romance however, was a bit lacking. yes they hated each other for more than 100 pages, and I was even surprised that their monologue still said they hated each other. but when on the last 50 pages they felt something and kissed, I wanted more of the slow burn. it was a bit immediate effect that I just didn't know how and when happened that Kasimir had the urge to kiss her which was disliking.
The other characters, such as Abria was also very kind yet sassy. I loved the way she would try to convince her brother and she held no hatred. she was sweet even.
the ending I kind of figured out before the end, and I was even surprised it was possible.
10/10 would recommend to anybody looking for a good read! It's been quite a while since I've read a fantasy book that has felt both completely original and creative that absorbs me completely. I've been in a reading slump, and this book was just what I needed to help get me out of it. With fantastical elements, a unique world/realm, romance, plot twists, and interesting side characters, this book will draw you in like a moth to a flame. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am so glad I read it! I can't wait for the next book to come and to see all that will unfold!
Oh. My. Goodness. The ending. The romance. The DRAMA. I am so invested that I’m gonna go buy the next book… At first it was a little slow paced, but I wasn’t ever quite bored it was just chill. I enjoyed it and was definitely intrigued throughout the whole story. I loved the characters, especially Kasimir 🤭 loved him from the moment he was introduced, and my adoration for him only grew as I read! I also enjoyed Natalya, she was a great female lead. Soft, feminine, but still strong and driven. And without spoilers BUT!!!’ The betrayal?!!!! I didn’t see it coming. Broke my little heart!! I loved that character 🥺🥺 The ending was so good and intense!! Also the romanceeeee🤭 so swoony!! The way he takes care of herrrrrr
Content: Battles, drinking, blood, torture, death, poison, no-spice romance, a brief scene of talking to an ancestor. No language.
I'm still getting over that ending!!! this book was very fast paced and interesting. And enemies to lovers!!! I cant wait for the next book cause that ending really was a game changer. A very incredible debut! AHHH I WANT THE NEXT BOOK BECAUSE OF THAT ENDING. The author cant do this to me😭
I made myself wait a few days after I finished reading this before I wrote my review, because all that dominated my thoughts about it until now was “LOVE, LOVE, LOVE” chanted repeatedly.
Berlyn has crafted a page-turning story of intrigue and romance with a healthy dose of action, unique magic system and immersive world-building, and overarching themes of the empowerment of forgiveness. This is a story I could picture as a movie in my head, thanks to the vivid imagery, captivating dialogue, and snappy one-liners. The characters are diverse and loveable (or love-to-hateable), and the plot twists had me asking my shampoo bottle “what?? WHAT???” in the shower over and over long after I finished the book.
Truly a spectacular read! One I’m so obsessed with, I made fan art of Kasimir and plan to do Natalya soon.
Heirs of Secrets is a great match for you if you enjoy: - Enemies to lovers (no, really. They’re actively plotting against each other and she’s planning to kill him for like half the book. They are ENEMIES) - no-spice romance - secrets, secrets, secrets 🤫 - plot twists - unique magic systems - immersive world-building - very little info-dumping - he falls first - themes of forgiveness, strength, and prejudice - a WILD ride in the last few chapters - strong female lead whose biggest strength is her heart -kick-butt MMC (and awesome side characters!)
Content Warnings: - Language: no swearing - Spice: kisses-only - Depictions of: violence and fighting (no excessive gore), death, murder, prejudice between species/kingdoms
Heirs of Secrets did not fail to disapoint!! It was very action packed, had unique world building, so many mysterys with twists and turns, and the romance far exceeded my expectations as well!!!! (I think chapter 36 was my favorite chapter (; ). I loved the theme of forgiveness in this book and how Natalya had to forgive and she found strength in forgiving those who'd hurt her, as well! I can never find anything this good in the fantasy genre, that's also clean/Christian, so I'm very glad I read this!!
And that cliffhanger!?! I can't wait for the sequel!!
This book! My gosh is the best book I have ever read. I love it so much!!!! I loved the enemies and lovers trope. I loved the banter between the characters. I also loved the plot. Don’t want to spoil anything for anyone but it was an amazing book. This is my favorite book now!!!! 😭❤️
this author needs more hype, this book needs more hype!!!! Read this it's so good!!! The romance is amazing! It's clean romance too!!! And that ending 🫣🤭🤭🤭🤌
Onto the book spoilers ahead 👇⚠️⚠️⚠️
The romance was romancing that romance was amazing!! Like even though we only got one kiss..... I mean like the little bit of romance we got was perfectttt and the tension 🤭🤭girllll this author is so goooood!! This book it really reminded me of The selection, and Powerless and this enemies to lovers we've got going on is perfectionnnn berlyn Hayes keep doing what you've been doing cause it's awesome! 👍😎
The plot twist
Why did Aaro have to freaking back stab her lol literally. Like he was such a good character and I'm so glad that her other body guard made it through I don't remember his name but I really liked himmmmm.
Overall I really enjoyed this book!! I can't wait for book two!!
Finally a book that actually has a plot instead of just spice!!!! I recommend this book to everyone the characters are amazing, and plot twist are top notch!!! Definitely read it!!
This book was the perfect blend of fantasy and enemies to lovers. I never expected what would happen on every page. It kept me wanting to read and never wanting to put it down. The secrets and lies were everything! And I never expected the plot twist until I read it and it was the best plot twist that I've probably ever seen in a book! I am looking forward to the next book soon so I can revisit Natalya and Kasimir's world. The action was amazing and the plot was so well-written that I kept forgetting that I was even reading. I could see the scenes playing out in front of me as if I stepped into the extravagant world of this book! And the part where the lines between enemies and lovers blurs absolutely will always hold a special place in my heart and I know I won't stop thinking about this book for a long time. So excited for the next book in the series!!
Update: Just finished rereading this and still was so hooked with the entire story. I am absolutely in love with the plot and characters. This book had me crying, laughing, and even smiling. I knew about the plot twist from the first time I read it but it still caught me off guard. This book has helped me get out of a book slump that I've been stuck in for a while. And this story will stay with me for a while. There will never not be a day where I don't think about this book. I can't wait to start reading the second one as soon as possible!
I almost had problems with this book until I realized it was the first in a series. Now I have the problem of waiting in agony until the second book comes out (because, my goodness, what a cliffhanger!) But knowing this was the first book, everything makes more sense.
The world building was fantastic, as was the magic system. I was much more interested in the history of the realm. I hope the next book spends more time on this aspect and answers some questions. I almost thought it was taking way too long for the MCs to start liking each other. But given how much they despised the other's people, it wouldn't have made sense for them to fall in love too soon, so I'm okay with it. (clean romance) The second book is so perfectly set up that I have a feeling it will be my new favorite book!
I Fricken Loved this book!!!!! It was amazing the romance was really good, and this book had me thinking really hard which is something not many books can do!
Okay on to my theory’s for the book
1 I think Devery is the traitor because Natalya mentioned that it was weird that Enze couldn’t sense the metal in the sword, and who do we know that can dull people’s perception….Devery 2 I think when heiro first reappears we won’t know it’s him. For all we know he could have already reappeared (unlikely though)
Anyway AMAZING BOOK!!!! Go read it NOW!!!

I loved this book! I felt really immersed in the world and story telling. I loved the dual pov of the characters. If you are looking for a clean ya fantasy with romance and mystery, this is the book for you!
This book was so good! Im excited to start the second one, especially after that ending 🤣. I enjoyed the characters, and liked the dual POV a lot. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who likes a good fantasy story!
This book was AMAZING!!! I have no words. Actually, I have some (: The world building was so great, I could clearly see and imagine the surroundings and characters. It was a really nice fantasy book that kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Plus, the enemies to lovers trope was a cherry one top. I loved that this book was closed door. I finished it in one day and can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Heirs of Secrets began slowly, but about 1/4th of the way through, the action picked up and didn't let go until the end! It had a lot of the elements that I love about fantasy: creative worlds, epic magic systems, and beautiful costumes. There were a few jarring things that kept me from giving it a full 5 stars, and I'll mention them, but just know that I fully enjoyed the story!
A few things that made me get pulled out of the story: *like many fantasy novels, this one feels like it takes place in what our world would think to be a long time ago. Bows and arrows, girls wearing dresses as a norm, and rudimentary technology (I'll grant that the guy's side--the immortal side--has technology that far surpass the mortal side) confirm this. However, sometimes the dialogue would sound like what a teenager from today would say. It sounded so modern, that it made me pause and think, "What?" *This is enemies' to lovers and man....they are enemies for a loooooooooooooooooooong time. Actually, saying 'to lovers' at the end almost seems like a spoiler, because even 80% of the way through they still hate each other's guts and as a reader I don't see how it's going to work out. They don't give each other a reason for liking each other besides being 'strong willed', or 'not exactly what I thought they were' or else the 'I hate you but you are really good looking' aspect. It does come, and while it also felt slightly jarring, I was grinning the entire time and enjoyed it so much!
There are a handful of other things, but those are the main two. I loved how the novel kept me on my toes, and the twists and turns kept me engaged (And I didn't foresee the *big* one!).
This year, I’ve read many amazing books but Heirs of Secrets easily has my heart! The story follows two people with completely different lives. Crowned Prince Kasimir de-Velo Andres’s of the Kingdom of Cresair and Princess Natalya of Ossynday. These monarchs carry deadly secrets that will cost them everything to overcome! I fell in love with Kasimir and Natalya as their relationship grew, both witty and determined characters whose banter is literally BANTERING. It was amazing having the dual pov which helped me to understand Natalya and Kasimir, not only as love interests but as actual people. I felt Natalya’s pain and fear, but also her courage and drive to do what is right. It was so cool seeing the mysteries of Cresair unfold before her as I was simultaneously trying to solve the puzzle myself. Kasimir was everything a girl could dream of and more! His constant battles with himself were heartbreaking and his denial of the growing love he felt for Natalya were everything! It was beautiful seeing the love he had for his sister Abria (easily one of my favorite characters) and his opinions about his future. I felt his frustration, fear, and love. Seeing Natalya and Kasimir’s love grow was unlike anything I’ve read. They DENIED it for so long and their little exchanges helped them see how much they loved each other. I loved reading how Kasimir was willing to risk his reputation just for Natalya, despite her being a human with a crippling illness. The side characters like Aaro, Syl, and Enzo warmed my heart! Seeing how much they loved their charges and their “dedication” to them. The plot twist had me dumbfounded and the ending was excruciating but perfect! I can’t wait to see the whole story play out and learn more about Natalya’s and Kasimir’s adventures!
OKAY SO! this is a book about a mortal princess who is engaged to a magical prince as the criteria for a peace treaty. the mortal—natalya, suffers from a crippling illness she’s had since she was young and has only a few months left to live. she moves into the magical kingdom, where her father has her investigate and relay information about the magical kingdom all while dodging hate from the kingdom’s people and trying to stay alive. however, in her time there, many mysteries are brought to question…
LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE THIS BOOK. KASIMIR MY SASSY, BROODING KING HAHAHAHAHA I LOVE HIM SO MUCHHHH WIWJKSOWOW! anyways—as you can see, i utterly, utterly loved this book. especially! the characters.
i fell in absolute LOVE with kasimir as i read this. although a tad stubborn and hot headed (okay, a lot) i really did enjoy reading his perspective and how he regarded natalya. i also loved syl and enze so much and hope we see more of them in the next book! they would be such an iconic duo omg
THE PLOT TWISTS WERE AN AMAZING ELEMENT! gods, i never saw those major two coming. perhaps it was just an oversight on my end though!
in my experience, i didn’t LOVE the writing style, and certain word choices that made it feel more modern. but perhaps that’s what she was going for! i think it was more a me thing, however, and it didn’t take away from the book! the plot and action made up for it!
overall i had a really good time with this book. it’s an extremely fast book, and i thought it was a good length! i would absolutely recommend this book so much.
After seeing this book on pintrest I was super hyped to read this book. I'm sad to say that it wasn't as good as I had hoped.
First of all I'm finding some Disney princess inspiration which I don't know if the author meant to do. The Jasmarine palace with the tiger as the emblem. The secret east wing Natalya can't enter with the rose medallion like Beauty and the Beast... I loved the idea of this world but all the details weren't well executed. I found myself getting confused quickly because of all the information that wasn't greatly described. I love a good enemies to lovers but they became lovers to quickly. All the sudden Kashmir is falling for her and he doesn't know why. You don't have a clear picture of the moment he fell in love. I also think parts of the book were rushed like the touring of Osydanny. One second they're there and the next they're back in Cresair. Also the author sets up Natayla's relationship with Aaro throughout the whole book and when he betrays her at the end, she doesn't even question it. She just says "how could you?" There should've been more denial. Her friendship with Enze was just beginning so maybe he'll be an important character in the next book. I am still gonna read the sequel because the cliff hanger was too good!

Honestly if you enjoyed ACOTAR for the story you would enjoy this book as well. For a second there I was worried the ending wouldn’t land but it did. Enjoyed the book a lot.
First off, I don't know how to put my feelings into words when I finished this book. (Stayed up all night reading it until I finished it)
WORLD BUILDING - The world building is amazing, I felt as if it was all real, and the more you read the more everything clicks and you feel like you're a character in the story, I love the rules and different classes in their society, I can't say this enough... IT FELT SO REALLL!
CHARACTERS - Where do I start??? 😭 The characters are so loveable, I love how Natalya isn't just like every other girl in the book where the author makes the fmc overly rebellious for no reason, she's actually loveable and relatable and I felt the EXACT emotions she felt every single time, I love how there are cute scenes where she teaches a little kid how to play a board game, it adds so much to her character, as for Kasimir, the character development for the both of them was huge, but he developed a lot throughout the story, the way it's written is amazing and doesn't feel abrupt, and again makes him feel so real.
BANTER - The banter was bantering and I couldn't help but smile at some of the scenes!!
ROMANCE - It's handled so well, the slow burn had me turning page after page, the tension, everything, and finally when there's romance, it's again written so well and just made me feel so warm and felt like a sweet romance, without any improper scenes, it's a TRUE enemies-lovers.
PLOT TWISTS - No. I didn't expect a single plot twist that happened, and when there's one it doesn't feel like it's put there to make the person keep reading, it feels well thought out and with each plot twist it adds more depth to the story.
WRITING - It's so beautifully written, I loved how I could imagine myself perfectly in the scenes that happened, the writing is unique and detailed yet doesn't bore you because there's no fluff. Each page is so well thought out and keeps you curious about what happens next even in relatively stagnant moments in the story. Hats off to the author!!!
Loved it! Couldn’t put it down. In fact, I didn’t put it down until I finished it. The world building and character development was so fun and easy to follow along with. I was hooked from the start with both Natalya and Kasimir’s characters. It had all the mystery and plot twists that kept me intrigued and on the edge of my seat wanting more. Plus the added bonus of a clean romance which is so hard to find these days with a good plot. Highly recommend and I’m excited to find out what happens next in the 2nd book!
THIS is what I mean when I say “I need an enemies to lovers book.” They were TRUE enemies. And it was SUCH a slow burn, but it was soo worth it.
I just hoped we’d get more romance before the book ended? In this book they were enemies until like the last 20% maybe? I want more sweet moments…not that I didn’t enjoy the enemies phase every. Single. Moment.
Best book I have read. My word I was so engrossed in this book and I was obsessed with the characters from page one. Berlyn smashed it out of the park with this book!! Cannot wait for the rest of the series!! I love the aspects of Christian faith she is putting in it is amazing to read ❤️ kasimir has become my newest obsession!
Loved it!! The romance had me giggling and kicking my feet!! I adored the tropes and Kasimir has definitely been added to my list of book boyfriends! The author did a great job with this book!! My only problem was that I was confused by some of the lore and magic system but I think that’s just me haha
This book is packed with action and sizzling tension!! It has all my favorite this and is COMPLETELY CLEAN!!! I couldn’t love it more if I tried, it’s an absolute masterpiece.
Rating: 6/10 Heirs of Secrets was an enjoyable read!
Things I liked: —The story!! I loved the intrigue and mystery of the plot, and the twists at the end were epic —the characters, especially the side ones! Abria and Enzo were my favorites; I liked Kasimir and Natalya as well, just not as much:) —that cliffhanger, man. The ending of the book was very well done, closing doors and opening new ones. The pacing in the middle of the book was a bit slow, but this made up for it!
Things I didn’t like: —occasional grammatical mistakes: nothing bad enough to get me to stop reading but they were definitely there —modern language. It was very much fantasy, but sometimes characters would think or say things that were very 21st century like “um, yeah”, etc —it was very high fantasy. This is not a bad thing in itself, it’s just not up my alley! Lots of world building things that take me a while to puzzle out are cool and it’s super impressive that the author put that much thought into the story, but I just don’t love to read it.
