What happens when a grumpy hockey player meets the sunshiney party girl with a heart of gold? He falls hard and fast, obliterating her insecurities until she falls right along with him.
NHL star Radek ‘Ralphie’ Nokavik was content with his simple life. He had his teammates. He had his career. He had his peace. Then he meets a gorgeous blonde that he can’t get out of his mind. After running into her again as his flight attendant, he sets out on a mission to make her his.
Morgan Becker has always been unlucky in love. She’s gotten used to situationships who want her to tone down her personality and never take the time to learn who she really is outside her bubbly persona. When she meets a broody hockey star who wants nothing more than to let her light shine, she’s thrown for a loop. A guy like that has to be too good to be true. But what if he’s the one man who never thinks she’s “too much?”
Backcheck Heart is a grumpy x sunshine, opposites attract sports romance with a protective MMC who wants nothing more than to prove to his girl she is worth the world. This hockey novella is full of sugar, spice, and no third act breakup.
Backcheck Heart is connected to the Nashville Songbirds series. Both MCs make a cameo in Behind in the Count as Robby’s sister and brother-in-law!

first, this was one of the sweetest reads i had. it was spicy just enough that it fit the plot so i didn't feel like i was reading nonsense and it felt like i was following a story. so without further ado...
morgan is not your typical girl, she has dropped out of college and she is working two jobs in order to keep the life that she wants. she is loud. she grabs the attention wherever she goes. she is not afraid to be herself. BUT, she is a in a relationship with someone who is clearly not the best for her. chet, a long fling that she has been having is not only a top notch jackass who clearly doesn't deserve this amazing girl. he has been molding and manipulating this girl for years, stringing her along and making her believe that there would be no one else out there who could "give her a chance."
ralphie. grumpy, quiet, shy ralphie. this professional hunk of a hockey player is probably the most quiet and reserved on the team and he is definitely not ready for his world to turn upside down when the girl who is serving the table at the bar he decided to go out to with his friends is this loud, beautiful and confident girl.
this sunshine x grumpy romance takes your standards higher, not only on being yourself but also accepting your loud personality, accepting the love you deserve when it comes to loving someone for who they truly are on the inside; no changes, accepting the flaws, embracing, communicating. above all, this book reminds you to find someone who will allow you to be yourself, don't change for the people around you and do not settle for something that is not going to make you happy in the end.
This book took me by surprise! It was short, it was flirty, and it was 🌶️spicy🌶️.
Saying I adore this book is an understatement–I loved everything about it! (except Andre😠) I love how light hearted and heated it is at the same time. Although it is a novella, it was written beautifully in a way that it did not feel rushed and the characters and their stories were well represented.
Radek Nokavik, where do I begin? Radek, penned as ‘Wreck it Ralph’ by his teammates, is your typical broody and grouchy hockey player that exudes ‘don’t f*ck with me’ vibes. But when his eyes meets with a certain blonde in a crowded room, well all hearts be damned because if Radek can show total commitment on ice, he sure as hell can be too off ice😏
Radek and Morgan’s love is the kind of love one hopes to find one day. Everybody needs a Radek in their life😭. The way Radek pursued and loved Morgan is nothing short of swoon worthiness. The guy is a walking green flag! He remembers every little thing about her, cares for her when she’s sick, but most of all, he quiets her fears.
🎶In a world of boys, he’s a Radek Nokavik🎶
Things I loved: -dual pov -he falls first -no third act breakup -hockey romance
Mygosh, I could go on and on about how much I adore this book! I want–need more!
Thank you so much Kat Summers and Truly Yours PR for the opportunity to read this as an ARC
This book is so sweet! It’s a love hockey romance with mild/medium spice and no third act breakup.
I loved Ralphie! He’s big, athletic, and quiet, but he’s also romantic, infatuated, and a gentleman. He is so respectful and doting. I love how seriously he takes his relationship and how much care he puts into insuring his girl feels his love and feels confident and self-assured. He is a dream.
Morgan is a nice mix of loving and disbelieving. With a past of relationships with shallow or selfish men, she’s firmly in ‘too good to be true’ headspace for a good chunk of the book. But she doesn’t let that stop her from standing up for herself and doing whatever she needs to, to keep her man.
Their relationship is lovely and heartwarming. There are a couple nice side characters, but the focus is largely on the main couple.
Overall, I would recommend this book, if you’re looking for a lighthearted hockey romance with minimal angst. 🥰

This was a sweet, simple, lovely novella. I usually have low expectations when I pick short novels but this was surprisingly good. It's a cute romance, that would help you take a break from all the long novels.
Raphie and Morgan meet at his best friend's bachelor party at a bar where she does her side job. He falls for her at first sight and tries to be respectful but protective (when she seems in trouble). They couldn't be any more opposite, with Raph being shy, grumpy, and quiet, and Morgan being bubbly, outgoing, and someone who likes the limelight. Yet, nothing could have stopped them from falling for each other. Morgan smote Raphie from the very first meet and it was the same the other way.
Margo was a strong bubbly FMC. She had continuously been let down by her exes who made her believe that she was nothing more than a pretty face. However, I loved how Raphie was such a good boyfriend, who hyped her and reassured her every time she showed a sign of vulnerability. He just stole my heart with all his love languages - like can a guy be any more perfect?
There were plenty of characters that acted as a hurdle in their relationship and tried to cause a rift. Fuckin hated ANDREE and the WAGs!! Regardless I feel their role was in a way necessary to make their bond as strong as it was. Every time anyone said anything demeaning about Morgan, it broke my heart(and also made me want to punch them) because that girl was a pure gem. I loved how they always fought for their relationship never paid heed to others' trash talk and focused on their feelings and the future of the relationship. They communicated and this is what I call a healthy relationship. GOALS!!
The spice in this book was good and of the perfect amount. It never felt too much.
I liked how there were several essential side characters but none of them were given more attention than required. His friends were so supportive, they not only helped him understand the dynamics of his relationship with Morgan before it went into the drains but were also always there to watch his back. And, Tabby was just the friend Morgan needed.
This book had everything in the right amount. It would make you embrace yourself and love(when provided). It's a perfect blend of emotions and love. It makes you understand the importance of a healthy good partner, who would not just love you but also help you grow and love yourself the way you are. It's the kind of book that makes you wish for love.
It's a short novel with a fast pace, and if you're looking for something like this, I would highly recommend this book. Loved it, Overall 4✨/5.
This was such a cute hockey novella. Once Ralphie had his eyes on Morgan there was no changing his mind. The way he had her best interest at heart and cared so deeply for her had my heart melting from the beginning!

✨RATINGS✨ ✨✨✨✨/5 🌶️🌶️/5
✨REVIEW✨ Usually I have a love hate relationship with short books because while they are adorable and fun little reads I feel like I miss half of their story but I don’t feel like that with this one! I love it.
Morgan and Ralph are adorable. Morgan is confident, funny and although she does have a lot of moments where she feels insecure and people put her down she’s strong and puts up a good fight and Ralph is always there to reassure her and help her build her confidence up even more.
Even if he doesn’t know the full reason behind why she needs the reassurance and support. Ralph is a grump but when it’s with Morgan his such a cute little sunshine.
As much as I would LOVE to read more of the story this book felt like it was the perfect amount. The book may have been a short one but the pacing made it feel like it wasn’t.
It was a nice quick read perfect for if you need a little cute romance inbetween long books. Honestly such a fun book and a nice little palette cleaner. Also I did I forget to mention it’s a sports romance 🤭
Ralph has my heart and I’m so glad that he finally gave her the princess treatment she needed. (I would call him Ralphie but he only likes Morgan saying it so… I’ll respect it 😂)
Thanks to Kat Summers & Truly Yours PR for the ARC opportunity!

Review: 4/5
I quite enjoyed this novella from Kat Summers. It's a quick read at just about 150 pages which made it easy to tear through it. I tend to find myself being a little more lenient when rating novellas simply because I enjoy detail and I always feel like novellas, by nature, lack some of that detail I would normally crave which is why I give this a four. Discounting that perspective, I'd probably normally rate this somewhere between 3 and 4.
Things I liked: - The dedication. Heck yes. "To all the girls who were ever told they were too much: don't diminish your light so that others can squint in the dark." You be you, girly. Even if you is loud or bright or what others might consider is "too much." - Ralphie's the best. I wouldn't call him grumpy so much as maybe more reticent than anything but he's just such a cinnamon roll. He will clearly spend the rest of his life hyping up Morgan and I'm here for it. Not to mention, our boy can talk dirty. - The way Morgan was written felt super real. I really felt like the insecurities she has and the internal conversations she has with herself to try to temper her expectations were spot on and completely realistic to how many women think.
Things I disliked or missed the mark: - Chet and those WAGs b*tches. This isn't a dig at the book, they're just crappy people and I needed to say it.
Overall, a fun quick read and I'll definitely check out the rest of the LA Crush series as it comes out (and maybe someday I'll stop signing up for ARCs and I'll have time to circle back to her previous series).
Ralphie is the OG grumpy hockey player who scowls and grunts at everyone… except his sunshine girlie! Even as a novella you can see so much into the characters.
Ralphie certainly didn’t have an easy background but he turned around and made his mark through hockey!
Seeing him falling in love with Morgan and being sweet, caring, devoted and obsessed with his girl was EVERYTHING!
Morgan deserves the whole world. I’m happy that with Ralphie and Tabby she found what true love and friendship means!
It was awful to see people treating her so unfairly but having her navigating through all negativity and becoming such a strong woman was beautiful!
This book was so swoony, spicy, filled with banter and hockey players that hopefully will have their own book moving forward!!

What a cute and spicy sports romance read. This book was fast paced and full of fun.
Morgan is a flight attendant who also works at clubs as a bottle girl. NHL player Ralphie happens to stumble upon Morgan and her bubbly ways one night while attending a bachelor party. Is Morgan the key to turn grumpy Ralphie into pure sunshine?
This book is delivered to us via dual POV. Morgan’s character is very unsure of herself but you can see the character growth as time progresses. Her character maybe aggravated me a few times but I understood why she was written as such.
Ralphie is possessive and full of “BDE” as Morgan likes to say 😉. Despite his childhood, he seems to be caring and genuine with a good soul.
These two are definitely cute and this was a nice read. 🩵
I think my favorite aspect of this whole book is the Wreck-It-Ralph reference 😊
Firstly, a big thank you to Truly Yours PR for sending me this delightful arc copy.
This book is the perfect escape from my current hectic uni life, offering everything I needed with its three essential S’s - SHORT, SWEET, and SPICY 🫶🏼😌
Ralphie and Morgan are an absolute delight, making for the cutest couple I’ve read in a while. What I loved most is that there’s no third-act breakup. Despite several potential pitfalls, our male main character stays steadfast and soft for her, which I absolutely adored. He lets her shine brilliantly beside him without ever dimming her light <33
I think this would be just the perfect book if you’re looking for a quick, light, heartwarming read with just enough spice to cage you in.
SUCH A CUTE HOCKEY ROMANCE! Honestly, I am not always the biggest fan of novellas, but this one? I loved it so much. The character development? The plot? The spice? The hockey parts? I loved it all! It was all so amazing. This story was paced pretty quickly and I wish there were more parts, but I believe that was simply the novella story style!
I highly suggest it to anyone who is looking for a sweet hockey romance where there is an alpha male and an independent yet insecure FMC. There are so many adorable interactions between these two, it's amazing! Such a quick read and might help someone else get out of a reading slump (like it did me)!
I know this is a novella but I wish it was more. I wish there could have been more character/relationship development as it all just felt a bit rushed and I was struggling to connect with the characters.
Overall, the storyline was a cute and very fast paced. It was nice to see how the MFC was navigating how to deal with a new relationship after her negative experiences in the past. I just wish there was more!

This was such an adorable and heartfelt read. I absolutely fell in love with both characters - Ralphie and Morgan. I was happy. I was angry. I wanted to reach through the book and SMACK a couple characters. Kat did an excellent job making sure that you felt every emotion the characters were going through.
It's a cute hockey novella that everyone should read!
I received this as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
I LOVED getting to know Ralphie and Morgan. The instant “pet name”, the saving of the day but she can do bad all by herself. Morgan learns to let Ralphie love her. And I am here for it.
Kat Summers deserves an auto buy spot on any hockey romance lover. Thanks Truly Yours PR for the opportunity.
It was good at first, but the romance was rushed and cringy. 50% into it and they're already dating and talking about being in love. He's possessive and not in the endearing way. Instead, it gave me the ick so bad I had to stop reading. Unfortunate, because some aspects of the book were interesting, but it fell off after they hooked up.
cute little sports grumpy x sunshine romance. super short, but it still felt like a complete story. and ralphie was adorable so i’m glad i picked it up, ive had it from a stuff your kindle day for a while!
the way 95% of the characters were so unbelievably mustache-twirly evil made me side eye, but i also didn’t hate it. also these two… these twooooo :( i’ve been charmed.
Thank you Truly Yours pr for sending me this arc!!!!!
I really enjoyed reading this book!! I always love when romance books have personal growth in them and this one was no different! While this personal growth looked a little different, I enjoyed the change. I also loved Radek and Morgan’s chemistry!
Thank you to Truly Yours PR for an ARC copy of this book.
This sweet novella jumps right in to a fast burn romance between Ralphie, a 'grumpy' NHL player, and Morgan, a 'sunshine' flight attendant/'bottle girl'. There were several spots in the story when I was like ... damn I wanted more here. I would have loved this to be a full length book with more details and depth as I enjoyed the banter and spice between the two main characters. To all the girls who have ever been told you are "too loud" or "too much", you will appreciate the way Ralphie nurtures and supports Morgan to embrace all the aspects of herself.
It's a quick and fun read for anyone who appreciates hockey fast burns.

This was a cute hockey novella, Ralphie and Morgan were a cute read.
Morgan has dated some straight-up jerks, but one night, when she's working her "fun job" as a bottle service girl, she ends up at a hockey table. She thinks their football players, but the grumpy one known as wreck it Ralph catches her attention.
Ralphie can't take his eyes off Morgan, the girl who's basically been told she's too much, not enough, too loud, etc. He builds her confidence back up and is protective of his girl.
This was super cute, quick, and I loved how Morgan found her voice to finally stick up to some bullies.
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to mix the adrenaline of ice hockey with the swoon-worthy tension of a instant attraction between the MCs, then *Backcheck Heart* by Kat Summers is the book for you.
This novel is like a slapshot straight to the feels, packed with steamy moments, sharp dialogue, and just the right amount of drama to keep you turning the pages faster than a breakaway on the ice. Our heroine, Maggie, is sexy, smart, independent, but hasn't had the best luck with men.
Enter Ralphie, the brooding, fiercely protective hockey star who’s just as good at backchecking as he is at making hearts race. Their chemistry is electric, with a banter that feels like a playful game of one-upmanship—each verbal jab only fueling the fire between them. The tension builds as they navigate their relationship of him showing her what she deserves and her beginning to understand how a real man treats a woman.
Summers does an excellent job of balancing the emotional depth with light-hearted moments, ensuring that the story never gets too heavy but still delivers the emotional payoff that romance readers crave. The hockey backdrop adds an extra layer of excitement to the story, with just enough action on the ice to keep sports fans engaged, while never overwhelming those who might not know the difference between a puck and a power play. It’s the perfect blend, making the romance feel all the more intense with the high stakes of the sports world in the background.
This book is fun, flirty, and totally addictive read that will have you cheering for the couple both on and off the ice. Kat Summers has crafted a story that’s as heartwarming as it is heart-pounding, and it's sure to leave you with a smile on your face long after the final page. Whether you're a hockey fan or just a sucker for a good love story, this book scores big.

First, I want to thank Kat Summers and Truly Yours PR for the arc. I'm so grateful for this!! so the book 'Backcheck Heart' by Kat Summers is a hockey romance where we have a brood hockey player falling so hard for the sunshine/ bubbly girl who has had loads of shitty people in life making her insecure about how she is. i would recommend you to be at least 16-17+ year olds to read this cause it is pretty spicy.

The FMC is so funny! I loved that she actually had a personality. I couldn't tell u the number of times I laughed while reading this. You could actually see the really cool character development! you could see her embrace herself and not hide who she is anymore. Another thing I loved is that there was no miscommunication and no THRID ACT BREAK UP!!!! That's why I picked this book and boy am I glad. Now on to Ralphie, he is my book boyfriend. he is literally Ralph from wreck-it-Ralph, a hunk who is too cute when in love and he is down bad. The number of times I squealed, giggled, and kicked my legs. He is MINE now. I love how he makes sure there is no miscommunication. He is a green forest.
The book seemed so short, though; I don't know why. One thing I wanted to add was this book isn't a slow burn, it was a kind of Insta-like? Not Insta Love, but I honestly didn't mind. I kinda wish there was more development in their relationship instead of them just going at it, but despite that, I enjoyed every second of this book. It's amazing and if the tropes above are your cup of time, I ask you to RUN to get this baby. This releases on May 24th so mark your calendar guys!!!
“I’m a lot,” she whispers, spearing me again with her vulnerability. “Good, 'cause I’ll never be able to get enough.”

First off, Thank You to Kat for allowing me to read about Ralphie and Morgan as an eARC! I have been dying to know more about these two love birds since book one of The Nashville Songbirds series. We get to meet them as side characters as Morgan, our FMC, is Robbie’s sister. But I just couldn’t stop thinking about their story. I’m so used to books by Kat being on a field and not in a rink but let me say, the switch was seamless! I think the hockey aspect of this book was done really well. Plus, this was a quick and fun read because it is a novella instead of a full novel.
Ralphie is the best kind of fictional hockey player in my mind. Brooding and tough on the exterior but with a soft and sweet soul when it comes to his girl Morgan. New crush: unlocked. And I related to Morgan so much. She is loud and feisty and over the top but is a good friend and cares about her people. These two are the definition of “opposites attracted” and it works perfectly for them. Gah! I love them so much🥹
If you are looking for a quick and fun read in the sports world, look no further. Kat has again given us a new couple to soon over and I loved it! Make sure to get yous on release day 5/24! And to meet them as side characters, start book one of the Nashville Songbirds series today!

Backcheck Heart by Kat Summers is a short novella, but it really hit the mark. The characters were relatable and lovable, and the story was cute and engaging.

Radek "Ralphie" Nokavik is an NHL star who is quite reserved and comes across as grumpy even to his teammates. Morgan is a full-of-life, ray of sunshine who is constantly on the go working as a flight attendant, bottle girl at 2 clubs, and an influencer. They met while Morgan was working at a club, and Radek was there for a bachelor party.
Morgan has had horrible relationships and has a lot of insecurities. Her insecurities and inner dialogue were well written and completely relatable. Ralphie is determined to get her to see how perfect she is and is the ultimate protector.
Ralphie is such a gentleman. “When we’re out together, don’t expect to touch any doors”. Once unlocked, he becomes a tease with quite the mouth. "Come on, good girl." The way he reassures her and takes care of her makes me swoon. "Because you're mine, Zlatíčko. It's my job to make sure you're okay." He is also playful and possessive. "But maybe don't mention showering with other men again, yeah?" Basically, he is the perfect book boyfriend. As my husband said, every time I read a line to him, 'the author wrote him well'.
While Backcheck Heart is a standalone, there will be a book 2, following other characters. And I can't wait!
𝑫𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒓: Given ARC to read for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions, and ratings are my own.
-I know that this is a novella, so a shorter book, but it still felt so short. I think a reason for this is that the relationship development went by really fast. As in, it went from point A to point Z in just a few pages and I kind of wished that there was more slow burn. Despite the fast burn relationship, I still enjoyed myself reading this book because I wanted something quite easy to get into and fast to read. -I was hoping to see Ralphie being more grumpy. He wasn’t a very cheerful and energetic person but I wouldn’t exactly call him grumpy because he kind of switches to a sweeter person once he met Morgan. Another aspect that I wished was done different was when they actually got together, I hoped that even with their conversation, Ralphie would have remained the gentleman he was instead of immediately diving into the sexual relationship ship. Other than those small aspects, I really feel like the bar is so high with this man. Morgan really did get lucky having gotten him when realistically, that man is unimaginable. Additionally, I love the fact that these characters can communicate. There’s no hiding stuff for stupid reasons and then ends up in a third act breakup. I really appreciated that. -The ending was quite a typical romance book ending so I don’t really have anything to say about that. The two characters are really cute together.

To all the girls who were ever told they were too much: Don’t diminish your light so that others can squint in the dark.
We started strong with this book dedication. Seeing that it was a shorter read, I didn’t expect this book to be a written masterpiece, but I was hoping for some good feelings. This story was cute, had an easy flow and was heart warming, just what I needed for a hockey romance!
I love when a dedication really matches the theme throughout the book. Specifically, I really enjoyed how the story kept returning to the FMC and that little light being blown out. I was worried that it was going to be an overwhelming amount of moments where she was being torn down, or that it would be small moments that didn’t seem like much, but it ended up being the perfect amount of angst.
Also, it wasn’t just from one source! I can’t stand it when all of the heartbreak comes from one source, because I can’t help but get irritated that the MC doesn’t cut that person off. In Morgan’s world, she was dealing with hate from several different angles. From the significant others of the other players, her ex, social media, and Ralphie’s employee, homegirl really couldn’t catch a break. She would try and build that self esteem back up, only to be torn down again from a new person.
“Listen closely, you sniveling swine. If you ever touch, call, or even breathe in the same zip code as Morgan again, you’re going to wish you hadn’t. I didn’t live through the dissolution of my country without learning how to make someone disappear without a trace. If you don’t want your family plastering your face on a milk carton, you will never cross my path or hers again. Understand?”
The protectiveness and possessiveness that Ralphie had for Morgan was just, *chef’s kiss*. It wasn’t too overbearing and it felt perfect, because even if it was clear that the FMC could benefit from having someone in her corner, she still sort of was trying to be independent in her own way. Sadly, it wasn’t be choice, but from protecting herself. She was used to men using her and expected the bare minimum, so having this man swoop in and show her how determined he was to take care of her was honestly adorable. He was adorable throughout the short story.
I also really like how, even if the author didn’t really emphasize his culture because of where he was from, it peeks out throughout as the story progresses. Like, him not recognizing that they need to actually talk about their exclusivity rather than assuming they were on the same page. It was fun reading his thought process and seeing where his mind was at throughout the relationship. He also wasn’t overbearing with the possessiveness which I really appreciated. It can be annoying when every chapter these men are just being extra all of the time, but Ralphie was written with equal amounts of fluff and gruff.
