As the small town of East Black Oak faces its grim reality, there are two of murders, detectives, and suspects.
Candice Holladay has chosen this town for her retirement after working there before on an arson and murder case.
With her German Shepherd Chowder, a retired police dog, she is pulled into a more challenging case before she even arrives at her new house.
A convicted ex- Seal from the previous case exposes problems.
No one knows that escapees from an asylum are walking among the townspeople. Even Chowder is not safe.
Officer Sterling of the police department has his hands full even without Gracie, an amateur sleuth and a friend of his daughter, who can’t stay away from crime scenes.
Family feuds, history, and murderers on the loose put Candice, Gracie, and Officer Sterling in a quandary.
No one, including Candice, is safe unless the murderers are caught
Past: Two feuding families. The Carmichaels & Pattersons. One family being shunned away from their home. Seeking revenge for injustices done in the past, always brings trouble & destruction.
In Double Intrigue by Carla Crowe, the town of East Black Oak is suffering for just that, past injustices seemingly held in the heart of one angry man.
Present: Candice, along with her sidekick, Chowder (German Shepherd) are trying to leave her police work behind, & find some peace & solace away from town. She solved the arson that caused fiery destruction on the property owned by the Carmichael family, unfortunately, a man was killed.
And now, she learns, a woman has been murdered. As she turns around to head back to town questions assault her mind faster than she can think. •Did she put away the guilty party? •Did she listen & investigate all the facts? •Did she? This is a great story of “intrigue” just as the title says. Author Carla Crowe is a new to me author, but she captivated my attention from page one all the way until the end. Don’t miss this book, that has been written in such a way to make me believe I was watching a “true crime” documentary from start to finish. I held on to the very end with my mind reeling! Kudos, Ms. Crowe!
Candice Holladay is retired form being a city detective and decided to more to the small town of East Black Oak where she had previously helped the police department there catch a murderer. So with Chowder her newly adopted police dog who failed his police dog training, she moved to East Black Oak hoping to enjoy retirement in the quiet little town. But on the way there, she received a call from the East Black Oak policeman, Officer Sterling that he's going to need her help on another case. So, once again she is chasing a case with Sterling. Add to that and there are Candice's new really nice neighbors. There's Betty a grandmother with her granddaughter, Gracie, an investigator wannabe who Candice takes under her wing. This was a fun read trying to figure out who the strange twins in town are and who committed the murder and why and add to that, the funny feeling she has about the last case where she helped convict the man. You will also really love Chowder! I highly recommend this series, and can't wait for more! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I absolutely loved the addition of Candice’s sweet dog Chowder and how he helped with this case once she’d moved to East Black Oak—but the beginning of her retirement was anything but calm. The story had some creepy characters, but since it’s a cozy mystery, the creep factor was more my speed and nothing to lose sleep over, lol which I appreciate.
Instead of guessing whodunit, the idea seemed to be more the procedures Candice and Officer Sterling went through to catch the guilty party. And Candice let her neighbor’s granddaughter Gracie help as she could since she was a Nancy Drew wannabe. Gracie was a fun character, a real sleuth wannabe but Candice treated her with lots of respect anyway which was really cool.
This is the kind of cozy mystery murder that will have you transfixed from the very beginning with the array of characters a retired detective from the big city relocated with a new four legged companion to small town USA brought back into action by the small town sheriff and a tenacious neighbors the characters may draw you in but it's a plot full of intrigue, secrets, and a history of betrayal that will have you captivated turning intriguing page after intriguing page holding your attention until you've reached its unexpected and climatic conclusion Acquire " Double Intrigue " for hours of enjoyable entertainment .Kat.

This is the first book I've read by this author. The story is a bit on the simplistic side, which is okay. I liked the characters. I just wish they were more "rounded out" and more dimensional. I'd like more description of the characters and the town. The story was good and interesting, and the twins were pretty creepy. I loved Chowder...I mean, who wouldn't? Sometimes you just need to sit back, put your feet up, and read a mystery filled with good people, great animals, and a quick resolution. This is one of those mysteries. No bad language, no sex, no cutesy dialogue, no gore. I will look for more from retired detective Candice Holladay.
Candace Holliday has just retired from her job as a detective in the city. After the events of the previous book, Under Fire, she has decided to adopt a dog who failed training as a police dog and move to the small town where the events of the first book took place. On her way there, she gets a phone call that another murder has taken place there, which leads her to wonder if the wrong person was convicted of the previous murder. The writing is tight, the clues scarce but logical enough to lead Candace in the right direction. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward immensely to the next book in the series. Highly recommended!
This story is hard to put down. Candice Holladay has retired from her detective job in the city. She has purchased a cottage in East Black Oak, and she and her German Shepherd Chowder are on their way to their new home. But there’s something very wrong and mysterious going on in East Black Oak. Mrs. Carmichael has been murdered, and there are no clues that can be connected. Candice is drawn into the case. And, she has a helper—Gracie, her neighbors granddaughter. There are clues about a mysterious set of twins—male and female—who are wandering around causing problems. Can they solve the case? And correct a possible conviction that appears to be an error?
This is a fun & entertaining story. Candace Holliday retires from her job in the city as a detective & moves to a small town. What she didn’t realise was that she would still be chasing murderers. She has two assistants, one canine, Chowder, a German Shepherd, who failed police dog training, & Candice adopts. The other, Gracie, her young next door neighbour, is keen on investigation. I thoroughly enjoyed this murder mystery. Highly recommend. I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author, & I am writing a voluntary honest review
What happens just as retired detective Candice Holladay is driving to her new home in East Black Oak with her newly adopted German Shepherd Chowder? She receives a call pulling her into a new case. At least she’s got some really great neighbors, even if she does have to tolerate bees in her yard, along with a new best friend in Officer Sterling. I really enjoyed this story, especially the creepy twins, and highly recommend it. This won’t be the last book of Carla Crowe’s that I read, I can promise that.
History has a way to come back and bite you in the butt. Candice is a retired detective who was planning to move into her new house with her german shepard, Chowder. A change of plans as she gets a call from the local police department, asking her for help on a murder case. So much happens while to find clues, Candice meets her new neighbors and finds out Gracie, the daughter likes to try to help the cops, even though they don't want her to, so Gracie was helping Candice with the case. Could two people be the killers from the past? Good reading.
This was an interesting cozy mystery that follows Candice as she resigns from the police force and moves to a small town. However, even before she arrives, her expertise is requested by the police chief in the town for a homicide. With the help of her loyal German Shepherd Chowder and aspiring detective neighbour Gracie, she starts investigating the crime and in the process discovers some gruesom.murders that have taken place over centuries. An interesting cozy mystery with a lovable dog.
Candice's retirement is not quite starting how she planned. Great fast read. Candice and Chowder are a fantastic team. The storyline is easy to follow, but with enough twists to keep it interesting. I really enjoyed this book, perfect for a cozy afternoon.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed this short story I received as an ARC copy, and although it mentions a previous case Candice was involved with before her retirement, it doesn't detract and keeps you guessing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait to read more about Candice, Gracie and, of course, Chowder, the failed police dog. Definitely recommended.
Candice has recently retired for her work as a detective and is settling down in a small town to enjoy a quiet life. Little does she know that she will get pulled into helping solve a murder before she gets to enjoy those quiet days. A really great series! Looking forward to more by this author.
I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.
I just recently discovered this author and I like the way she makes her readers think. These books are not sweet and they are not snarky; they’re intelligent and well written. I look forward to reading more by Ms. Crowe!
I loved it, I wish it continued a lot longer than it was I really enjoyed the book. I will read more from her. Love mysteries and her mystery was amazing and didn't see any of it coming! especially how it all came together! I was shocked.
Received this short story as an ARC. Candice retires from Detective job and returns to her hometown of East Black Oak. Candice and her dog Chowder walks into a killer on the loose. Well written, great characters and a well defined plotline. For a short story it was a great read!
a wonderful cozy mystery! lots of twists and turns, murder and mayhem, complex characters and a fast paced story which is a real page turner and a must read!
A new murder and one she thought was solved Candice and officer Sterling have their work cut out, thankfully the young Gracie it's there as well.
This is a series I'm getting into and as Candice begins to build her team. I feel there is a lot of fun ahead. A quaint town full of quirky characters and plenty of guess work make this a lot of fun. I recommend this one and the pictures I've read seem special as well
