"Even a Pawn has the power to change the game..."

Before I was "Dr. Eli Hawthorne, Deck Runner mentor" to our Las Vegas team, I was "Lord Hawthorne, Earl of House Valentine" in the heart Los Angeles... and this is how I got from there, to here.

Eli Hawthorne, an Earl within the Peerage, has always prided himself on his adherence to the ancient traditions and strict codes that govern the magical community. However, a series of events begins to unravel his steadfast loyalty, revealing the cracks in the foundation of the Peerage's rigid structure.

In a world where magic is bound by ancient laws and rigid hierarchies, Eli Hawthorne stands as a paragon of the Peerage's ideals. As an Earl entrusted with upholding these traditions, his life is one of unwavering loyalty and strict adherence to the rules. But when a clandestine mission brings him face-to-face with the Deck Runners—rogue magicians who defy the Peerage's control—Eli's world is turned upside down. Captivated by their innovative magic and unbreakable bonds, Eli begins to question everything he's been taught to believe.

Caught between the duty to his heritage and the pull of a new destiny, Eli must navigate a treacherous path that challenges his very identity. With the Peerage's wrath looming and the Deck Runners' lives in his hands, Eli faces an impossible remain a servant to the past or become a herald of change.

"REBEL MAGICS, a Vegas Arcana Novella" is a tale of courage, transformation, and the quest for freedom. It's a story for anyone who has ever dared to break the chains of convention to forge a new path forward. Join Eli as he steps out of the shadows of tradition and into the light of rebellion, where the future of magic is rewritten.

*This prequel novella is part of the Vegas Arcana series and takes place 30 years prior to the events in book 1 - Deck Runner's Gambit, available early April!

About the author

James Anderson Foster

A decorated U.S. Army combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm, he served in a rapid-deployment Cavalry unit that helped spearhead the VII Corps invasion of Iraq and engage their elite Republican Guard. Years later, he earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology, which means he now understands exactly why his characters make terrible decisions under pressure.

Under the name J.A. Foster, he writes high-intensity espionage thrillers shaped by his years living in Germany during the final days of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall — a front-row seat to shifting alliances and collapsing regimes.

As James Anderson Foster, he writes urban fantasy where Egyptian spellcraft, Norse runes, vampires, and modern technology collide in mostly inconvenient ways.

He is also an award-winning audiobook narrator of over 500 titles, including Marvel's Doctor Strange and the entire Firefly franchise, which means if you’ve listened to enough genre fiction, there’s a decent chance you’ve already heard him. He lives with his family, an unimpressed cat, and more fictional governments than strictly necessary.

First - I realize it took me forever to finish this. Totally not a knock on Foster. My day job has ramped up and I'm on the computer all day and by the time I have time to read - I can't see straight. So it's pretty much all audiobooks. Finally had a break and finished this in one morning!

The is the prequel novella to James Anderson Foster's debut series, Vegas Arcana. I admit Urban Fantasy is not a go-to for me, but nearly every time I dive in, I enjoy it.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will share that Foster's writing is vivid. VIVID. I can visualize everything he's describing and found myself wanting desperately to visit this world he's built.
Maybe he's figured out a way to enchant readers through an ebook because there were times I swore there was a bit of a buzz in the air around me.

If you love rebels, the overturning of centuries worth of "because that's how we do it", and self discovery - this is a great tease to a series I can't wait to learn more about.

Book 1, Deck Runner's Gambit is already out. However I spied on Threads that Foster is already working on the audiobook. So I'm going to save my eyes and wait for that awesomeness.

(P.S. If you didn't already know - Foster is an accomplished narrator of hundreds of books in a variety of genres.)

What a tease!!
This was a beautifully written novella with a ingenious introduction into an aesthetically stimulating hidden world. The writing style was theatrical, imaginative, artistic and original, having qualities of a cleverly performed first act of a stage play. Just enough of a tease to pull you in and keep you wanting more. And wanting more is exactly what I am feeling. Need to get my hands on the first book in this new series now!
