Lloyd Jeffries enjoys dark comedies, philosophy, clever turns of phrase, religious studies and thought experiments involving the esoteric and legendary. A decorated veteran of numerous conflicts, he served in the U.S. military and has practiced Emergency, Trauma and Wilderness medicine for more than twenty years. He hides out in Florida with his family and Buck the Wonder Dog.
After devouring A Portion of Malice, I knew Lloyd Jeffries’ Ages of Malice series was going to be something special. His ability to blend biblical prophecy, historical intrigue, and relentless action into a modern-day thriller had me hooked. So, when A Measure of Rhyme landed in my hands, I was more than ready to see where the story would take Rhyme Carter, Emery Merrick, and the enigmatic figures pulling the strings behind the scenes. What I didn’t expect was for this sequel to escalate the stakes so dramatically, turning a story of revelation and pursuit into a full-blown war for survival—both physical and spiritual.
Rhyme Carter’s journey in A Measure of Rhyme is nothing short of breathtaking. In the first book, she was a woman caught in a whirlwind—trapped between two powerful forces, one claiming to love her and the other desperate to save her. Here, her situation has only grown more dire. She’s now married to the Antichrist, an unfathomably dangerous man who sees her as both a prize and a pawn in his apocalyptic endgame. But her heart belongs to Emery Merrick, the journalist who risked everything for her, only to be left battered, broken, and utterly lost.
Jeffries does a phenomenal job depicting Rhyme’s internal struggle. She’s not merely a woman in distress—she’s a survivor, a strategist, and someone desperate to reclaim control over her fate. The way she navigates the oppressive presence of her husband while secretly plotting her own course is mesmerizing. She’s walking a razor-thin line, knowing that one wrong move could cost her everything, yet she refuses to surrender.
If Rhyme’s story is one of determination, Emery’s is one of devastation. In A Portion of Malice, he was the intrepid journalist who uncovered the horrifying truth lurking beneath history’s greatest events. But here, we see a man crushed beneath the weight of knowledge he was never meant to bear. After waking up in a hospital and realizing he’s been abandoned by the woman he loves, he tumbles into a world of addiction and despair. Jeffries writes Emery’s decline with brutal honesty—he’s lost, broken, and utterly at the mercy of forces far greater than himself.
What makes Emery’s arc so great is that it’s not just about his suffering. Even at his lowest, he remains a man of deep conviction, grappling with the role he’s supposed to play in a story that’s spiraling toward an apocalyptic finale. The tension between his hopelessness and his inherent need to fight back makes for an emotional, often heartbreaking, journey.
One of Jeffries’ greatest strengths is his world-building, and A Measure of Rhyme is a masterclass in how to construct a gripping, richly detailed setting. The novel expands on the mythos introduced in A Portion of Malice, pulling in elements of biblical prophecy, secret societies, and the machinations of seemingly immortal beings who have shaped history for centuries.
The pacing is relentless—there’s no time to breathe as Rhyme and Emery are hurled from one perilous situation to another. Jeffries balances high-stakes action with deeply philosophical musings, forcing readers to confront big, unsettling questions. Are we truly in control of our own destinies? How much of history has been manipulated by forces we can’t even comprehend? And if the end is inevitable, do our choices even matter?
The Writing: Sharp, Cinematic, and Uncompromising. Jeffries’ prose is as sharp as ever. His writing is cinematic, each scene playing out with vivid detail and relentless momentum. The action sequences are heart-pounding, the dialogue crackles with tension, and the moments of introspection hit hard. He doesn’t hold back—whether it’s the brutal realities of power, the fragility of human resistance, or the sheer scale of the apocalyptic stakes at play, every page crackles with energy.
The novel’s structure also keeps readers on edge. The alternating perspectives between Rhyme and Emery provide a dual narrative that is as emotionally resonant as it is gripping. Each chapter builds upon the last, creating an unrelenting sense of urgency. And just when you think you’ve figured out where things are going, Jeffries twists the knife, upending expectations in the best way possible.
If A Portion of Malice was the introduction to a grand, apocalyptic chess match, A Measure of Rhyme is the moment where the pieces start to move in ways no one can predict. It’s darker, more intense, and deeply thought-provoking, taking the series to new heights. Rhyme’s resilience, Emery’s struggle, and the ever-looming presence of unstoppable forces make this a sequel that doesn’t just live up to the first book—it surpasses it.
Fans of Ages of Malice will find themselves utterly enthralled, while newcomers will be desperate to go back and see how it all began. And with the way things are shaping up, the next installment promises to be nothing short of earth-shattering.
Highly recommended for readers who love thrillers with historical depth, theological intrigue, and characters that refuse to go down without a fight.
A Measure of Rhyme is the second amazing book in the Ages of Malice series by Lloyd Jeffries and, as with his first book, this author does not disappoint and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout this new story. This book has the same excellent characters, plus a few wonderful new ones and is an awesome follow-up to what was begun in A Portion of Malice, the first book in the series.
At the end of book number 1, the reader is left with Thaddeus Drake dead, Emery almost dead, and what seems to be no conclusion in this epic tale of a man trying to control the world. Well...thankfully, that is not the end and we enter a whole new spell-binding adventure in A Measure of Rhyme. As the second tale opens, Emery is given a tour of Heaven as he learns that he is not dead and about to be given a huge job in the coming war as Cain tries to continue forward with his goal of domination. Upon Emery’s return from Heaven he sinks even deeper into the life he was leading before, one of addiction and pure misery, and one that is being controlled by a true immortal lunatic, as Thaddeus Drake returns to earth as Cain.
Enter Rhyme, the woman who Emery has always loved and believes is lost to him forever. Unfortunately for him, and especially for Rhyme, she is now married to Cain and working very hard to keep Emery, the man she truly loves, safe from the machinations of her husband. All Rhyme wants in life is to destroy her very evil husband and get her life back but that is not going to be a very easy task for a woman who is supposed to be a simple librarian.
A Measure of Rhyme is a great continuation to this series and in it the author gives his readers an exceptional new character. Rhyme is, simply put, an incredible addition to the story. She is one of the strongest female lead characters this reader has ever seen and her past is one that makes her the absolute perfect person for this job. She and Emery will have to overcome some very insurmountable odds in order to save themselves and the world from complete destruction as it heads for a total apocalypse. It is thrilling to be allowed along for the ride.
As always, Lloyd Jeffries puts forth an extremely well-written and well-researched story that you just cannot put down. He has a talent for making each of these characters come alive on the pages and really involve the reader in each and every moment of what is happening. In addition, the imagery in the writing makes one feel that they are actually there while it is happening, whether in Heaven or some place on Earth. These two things combined make it an amazing story that takes readers through history as Emery attempts to save the world from a crazy man.
I cannot recommend A Measure of Rhyme enough to readers. It is a fabulous continuation to an incredible story and you are just going to love it. If you are one of the few out there, and I can’t imagine there are many, who have not yet read book one then hurry out and get it so that you are a part of this journey. I, for one, will be anxiously awaiting book number three.
Quill says: The Ages of Malice series is one that is set in both Biblical and modern times and the combination makes for incredible storytelling. The reader will experience everything from compassion and confusion to terror and goosebumps and they will love every moment. And, the best part of all, we can now look forward to book number 3!
After finishing A Measure of Rhyme, the second book in Lloyd Jeffries’ Ages of Malice series, I find myself captivated by the emotional depth and the intensity of supernatural conflict that unfolds. While I missed the first book, A Portion of Malice, I plan on revisiting it after experiencing the gripping events of this sequel.
The story centers around Rhyme Carter, who finds herself caught in a dangerous love triangle. Married to the Antichrist—Cain—she is forced into a heart-wrenching decision between her duty and her love for another man, Emery Merrick. While the notion of the Antichrist may spark interest, it's worth noting that this interpretation may not align with traditional biblical teachings. The narrative is thick with emotional turmoil, as Rhyme’s love for Emery becomes the driving force for her to reclaim her life, all while facing her powerful, and manipulative, husband.
What makes this book stand out is not just the perilous stakes but the complex relationships that define it. Rhyme’s struggle is both personal and global—her choices will impact her love life, her survival, and the fate of humanity. The moral dilemmas she faces challenge the boundaries between right and wrong, all within a world where the supernatural is very real. This deep dive into human emotions and ethical complexities is masterfully done, balancing internal conflict with external pressures.
Lloyd Jeffries doesn’t disappoint with his vivid storytelling. The imagery is immersive, pulling readers into both the heavenly realms and the darkest corners of Earth. His characters, both old and new, continue to evolve in unexpected ways, keeping you on the edge of your seat. Rhyme is a standout character—one of the strongest female leads I’ve encountered in recent memory—and her journey from librarian to world-saving heroine is as thrilling as it is inspiring.
The book seamlessly chronicles the saga of a secret society’s quest for domination, building tension as the world moves closer to an apocalypse. There are so many layers to this story: love, betrayal, redemption, and the looming threat of annihilation. It’s an emotional rollercoaster, where survival isn’t just about physical battles, but about holding onto hope when everything seems lost.
Fans of supernatural thrillers and epic sagas will find themselves hooked, as the action and suspense escalate in each chapter. The stakes are high, the characters complex, and the plot never slows down.
Though I came into this story without the context of the first book, I am now eager to experience it and learn how the saga began. A Measure of Rhyme is a fantastic continuation, and I am already looking forward to what comes next in this dark, high-stakes series.
As BookHookup, I am a longtime book reviewer. I received a free review copy of this book from Black Phoenix Book Tours and have not received compensation for reviewing or recommending it.
Nothing is more powerful than a woman's wrath when half of the time it is due to a man's stupidity, yet it falls back on a woman's shoulders, with her referred to as crazy and difficult to deal with. But nothing and no one could ever be prepared for the unexpected.
In "A Measure of Rhyme: Ages of Malice, Book II," author Lloyd Jefferies' wise decision to create a grand return of the protagonist from book one, Cain. A complete shocker for everyone involved because society was reminiscing and expressing their fondest moments with Thaddeus Drake. His return has caused enough questions and wonders, and based on his new appearance, glowing white hair, and crystal-piercing blue eyes, it begs to question his true purpose. Cain came in like an apocalyptic warrior on a white horse, and one would have thought the end times were near. Cain is on a mission to stir things up and to put people where he sees fit to ensure everything goes according to plan. The idea of sparing Emery's life in exchange for making Rhyme his wife would seem far-fetched, but everything is working the way he wants, as a master in control. Unfortunately, Rhyme has other ideas, though she will always love and keep Emery close to her heart. She understands that her role serves a greater purpose than the love between mere humans. With Cain assuming the position of God's replacement, his plans were in motion to fulfill the bible with no hope for humanity or the United States. It seemed as if history had slowly begun to repeat itself, as many throughout history have mentioned. The mystery ensues that events occurring based on the warnings of the bible but in a more twisted and seemingly complex way can only mean one thing, Cain is recreating the present in preparation for the future. Rhyme is on her secret mission to find out exactly what is going on and why, in hopes to get back to her love, Emery.
This book provided a great reading experience because it captured the reader's attention from start to finish. It is one of those books you cannot set down, as it is a true page-turner. I had no idea Rhyme was concocting plans, all under their noses like an intelligent woman who gets overlooked, typical treatment. Fully trained for the dangerous life exposed to her, one could only appreciate how well she handled herself. I recommend that others consider reading both books as it entertains, educate, and enlighten.
“A Measure of Rhyme” by Lloyd Jeffries continues and maintains the energy and excitement which began in “A Portion of Malice.” In this second installment of the “Ages of Malice” series, previous questions are answered, details and explanations are given to happenings beginning in “Ages,” relationships, priorities, and appearances are altered, but the page-turning energy transmitted to the reader does not.
The saga begins when Emery awakens in the hospital from a near-fatal and paranormal experience with Longinus and Cain. While he was out, Cain made a new best friend with Lucifer, and while continuing to roam the Earth because of his curse of immortality, he discovered his updated purpose – to be the antichrist. Meanwhile, the reader is introduced to Rhyme in real life, out of Emery’s memories- she continues to be his obsession and his ex-wife, yet the reader will learn more that may influence any original thoughts of her. Igneus is around doing his thing, attempting to distance himself as much as possible from Cain and his plans. “A Measure of Rhyme” shows good continuing to trump evil, but the devil is in the details.
“A Measure of Rhyme” contains subtle hints to biblically referenced stories and material, beginning with Cain making his reappearance, or seeming “resurrection,” while parting a crowd and riding a horse; a staff is also evident, along with powers imbibed by the holder. Cain’s appearance and abilities have changed since his deal with the devil, but his sly and conniving attitude seen from the beginning has not changed ; as the definition of malice is the intention or the desire to do evil, it is evident that Cain lives up to the title.
The second installment continues the reader’s edge-of-your-seat experience, yet in a slightly different way than “A Portion of Malice.” “A Measure of Rhyme” contains action throughout the story, but not as in-depth or violent as in the first book, with the language of the characters presenting to be more PG-13, rather than R, as found in the first story. This reader couldn’t put the book down and finished it in record time. Solid characters and storyline, along with the appropriate amount of intensity, make for the perfect formula in a nearly perfect series.
This enthralling thriller is sure to captivate readers with a penchant for action-packed reads. The novel stands out as a standalone book that can be easily followed by readers who have not yet read the first book in the series. Author Lloyd Jeffries takes readers on a journey through a world of chaos where characters relentlessly pursue their desires. The novel is filled with intense events, diverse settings, and an impeccably narrated storyline that together create a highly entertaining reading experience.
The novel revolves around the life of Rhyme Carter, a woman who finds herself in a tumultuous marriage with the Antichrist, despite her heart belonging to someone else. Rhyme must outsmart her spouse and stay one step ahead of him at all times. Her character is dynamic and intriguing, and her story is replete with exciting twists and turns. Meanwhile, Emery Merrick finds himself in the hospital, struggling to recover while dealing with the chaos around him. The story follows the lengths to which humans will go to survive and gain power over society, and Jeffries' expressive, imaginative and charming style makes it all the more gripping. One of the strengths of the novel is the multitude of lessons that can be drawn from the characters and plot, such as loyalty, love, power dynamics, submitting to authority, handling dilemmas, and prioritizing family. The narrative is infused with a perfect blend of intense drama, action, and suspense, making for a truly engaging read. As someone who enjoys fantasy, fiction, paranormal activities, thrillers, and supernatural tales, I found the book to be a remarkable addition to the genre. Lloyd Jeffries has created an exceptional storyline with a flawless plot flow, and masterful writing.
This book is highly recommended to anyone seeking an extraordinary reading experience that is sure to keep them on the edge of their seat from beginning to end.
When discussing book sequels, particularly within the realm of indie authors, there often exists an apprehension that the second installment may lack the meticulous craftsmanship found in its predecessor. Lloyd Jeffries, however, has set an exceptionally high standard with the inaugural entry in his series, A Portion of Malice, which left me utterly enthralled by its intricate narrative. Consequently, I approached A Measure of Rhyme with a sense of trepidation, eager to ascertain whether it would maintain the lofty benchmarks established.
To my immense relief, Jeffries has once again triumphed in his endeavor. Waste no time does he, swiftly plunging the reader back into the enthralling plot right from the opening pages. I must confess that reacquainting myself with Jeffries' witty and intense writing style was no easy feat. Yet, at certain junctures, I found myself laughing out loud to his trademark dark humor, realizing just how dearly I had missed such delightful moments.
Discerning any new revelations about the plot without divulging spoilers proves challenging. Nevertheless, the author continues his masterful portrayal of fully fleshed-out characters, progressively unveiling their concealed motivations layer by layer. This approach keeps the reader perpetually on their toes as the story embarks on unexpected twists and turns with each successive chapter. To this day, I remain awestruck by the vividness and authenticity of the characters, particularly their interactions, to the point where I occasionally forgot that I was immersed in a work of fantasy. Such an experience is an unequivocal testament to the remarkable craftsmanship displayed within these pages.
A Measure of Rhyme stands as a superlative sequel to an already exceptional dark fantasy novel, replete with clever and unapologetically adult moments. Without reservation, I wholeheartedly recommend this book and eagerly anticipate the forthcoming third installment in the series.
This is book two of the Ages of Malice series. A series that straddles genres. A thriller/supernatural/religious fantasy.
Book one left us with a cliffhanger with events leading to peaceful coexistence in the Middle East and not knowing whether Thaddeus Drake or Emery Merrick or anyone else had survived.
Former Pulitzer prize reporter and dysfunctional junkie Emery has survived against the odds. His employer Drake is gone but returns from Heaven freed of the Drake persona. Now he is only Cain. The original murderer. An immortal full of evil plans and swirling malice. Longinus, the Roman is also back. His charred immortal body healing to its former glory. The ultimate warrior. Igneus the immortal Jew is in hiding on the streets of Jerusalem and has taken one of the children abandoned by Drake under his wing. But with Sebastian falling ill and Igneus needing to keep a low profile can he keep the boy alive and stay safe. Have his powers deserted him or is he a tool of God?
Into all the chaos of Emery's life enters Rhyme Carter. His ex wife who he thought gone forever. He's still in love with her but she's remarried and he's in for a shock. And he's got no idea about Rhyme's past.
There's a lot going on and the prose flies by at a blistering pace. There are many plot elements being juggled here and the author does a masterful job. We get different points of view with Rhyme's chapters reading like a thriller/espionage novel. She's an incredible addition to the series.
The promised peace is just the start of Cain's plan. Utter carnage is part of his agenda. Biblical forces will be unleashed including the Roman's Spear of Destiny.
There are so many revelations and we get conclusions and cliffhangers in the end.
Thankfully I'm on next month's tour for book three. Can't wait to see if it's as awesome as this novel.
A MEASURE OF RHYME Lloyd Jeffries 5 Star Reader’s Favorite Review by Lex Allen
The second novel in the Ages of Malice series (trilogy?) does not pick up exactly where the first novel ended; rather, it kicks off a parallel storyline that links seamlessly with book one, A Portion of Malice, to continue a fascinating tale that features Biblical characters in entirely different roles while maintaining an evil versus good... world domination theme.
I read, and with great pleasure, five-star reviewed A Portion of Malice. In that review, I mentioned Jeffries’ writing style as a mixture of Stephen King, Dan Brown, and (without the slightest stretch) – Dante’s Divine Comedy not as poetry or in the plot, but prose that alludes well to Dante’s leitmotif presented in the major parts of Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
Yes, seriously!
What fascinates and simultaneously creates a page-turning, never want to stop to eat or sleep-reading experience is the twisted (story-wise, in a good way) characterizations of ancient Biblical characters. From Drake aka Cain (the son of Adam) to Longinus (the Roman centurion who oversaw Jesus’ crucifixion) immortals in league with Satan working to ultimately win the never-ending war of evil versus good. The lead and title character Rhyme is an especially fascinating character. Like Katniss of Hunger Games fame, she’s a woman whose multiple skills provide a serious threat to the secret society and the immortal leader’s plans. A Measure of Rhyme is a fast-paced, ever-twisting tale that at once provides a thrilling read that’s full of that all-important, however illusional, sense of reality, aka verisimilitude. A Measure of Rhyme presents a sensational continuation of the Ages of Malice series. Having read both current books in the series, I am eagerly anticipating the next installment.
Rhyme Carter’s life has been turned upside down as she finds herself married to the Antichrist and watching the man she loves, Emery Merrick, fall into despair. As Rhyme struggles to navigate the dangerous world, she’s found herself in, the Antichrist’s plans to fulfill an ancient prophecy and destroy the world are well underway.
But in Lloyd Jeffries’ A Measure of Rhyme, the second book in the Ages of Malice series, Rhyme emerges as an unlikely hero, determined to take on the dark forces threatening to destroy everything she holds dear. This intense and entertaining supernatural thriller is expertly woven with themes of secret societies, biblical elements, and an impending apocalypse, making for a gripping read from start to finish.
What’s particularly impressive about Jeffries’ writing is his ability to seamlessly incorporate a range of literary themes, from the paranormal to the complexities of love, betrayal, and heartbreak. Each adds its own unique flavor to the story, creating a rich and satisfying cocktail of literary goodness. One of the most striking things about Jeffries’ writing is the strength of his characters. They’re vividly drawn and stay with you long after you’ve finished reading. His writing is precise and packed with intrigue, making it impossible to look away. Despite the dark themes, Jeffries’ writing is also infused with humor, adding a refreshing light to the story. This ability to balance darkness and humor is a testament to his skill as a writer and makes for a truly enjoyable reading experience.
While it may take a little while to get into the heart of the story, the payoff is well worth the wait. A Measure of Rhyme is a must-read for fans of supernatural thrillers and anyone looking for a book that will keep them on the edge of their seat.
In the thrilling sequel to A Portion of Malice, Lloyd Jeffries takes readers on a captivating journey in A Measure of Rhyme. Rhyme Carter, trapped in a marriage with the Antichrist, finds herself torn between her evil husband and her true love, Emery Merrick. When Emery awakens in a hospital only to discover Rhyme's betrayal, he spirals into a world of addiction and chaos. As the world teeters on the brink of apocalypse, Rhyme devises a plan to thwart her husband's sinister ambitions and reclaim her life. With relentless action and a touch of prophecy, this second installment in the Ages of Malice series will leave readers breathless.
A Measure of Rhyme is an electrifying thriller that delves deeper into the captivating world Lloyd Jeffries has created. The author's visionary storytelling and ability to weave together complex characters and intricate plotlines make this novel a riveting read. From the very beginning, the tension is palpable as Rhyme grapples with her conflicted feelings for her husband and Emery. The emotional turmoil and internal struggle of the characters add depth and authenticity to the story, making it relatable despite its fantastical elements. Jeffries' writing style is immersive and fast-paced, propelling the narrative forward with each turn of the page. The action sequences are skillfully crafted, keeping readers on the edge of their seats and eager to know what happens next. The author effortlessly blends elements of mystery, romance, and supernatural intrigue, creating a multidimensional story that appeals to a wide range of readers.
This book builds upon the foundation laid in the previous installment, expanding the lore and mythology of the secret society and its plans for world domination. Whether you're a fan of supernatural fiction or simply enjoy a thrilling page-turner, this book is a must-read.
A Measure of Rhyme, what a book. I read all the series and I must admit that I made an error in that I read the first book and without realizing the actual sequence, proceeded to book 3 and 4. At the end, I realized that I missed the second book which is this one. Be that as it may, upon touching this book, I got more hooked than ever. The engaging nature of the storyline lingered in my mind throughout as it was hard to put it down.
Rhyme's proclivity to chaos makes for a compelling read as one somehow feels like intervening to guide her choices. I particularly loved Emery. His character has been depicted in such a way as one constantly habour pity for the character.
The prose employed by the author is reverting, using extremely complex characters throughout. The crafting and feature of these characters is so vivid that I will argue that given a chance, I can easily identify them in person with ease.
The tension embued throughout makes for a unique pacing that immerses the reader so effortlessly. I am a great fan of dystopian genre which made my reading experience feel particularly empowering.
These series are definitely not for everyone but those who love supernatural thriller type of books. Reprising my earlier call, these series needs to be extended somehow and consequent to their cinematic frame, the author will do well to consider translating them into a movie which I can't miss.
The author of these series is possessed with inimitable skill that needs to be imprinted in the anals of history. I have resolved to reading these series at least once a year hitherto as it is impossible to sate one's curiosity, the tension and the unpredictability of Rhyme's storyline.
This are series, I would recommend any day to those inclined in this type of genre.
Well Done Lloyd Jeffries, you deserve a special prize, praise and compliments.

A Measure of Rhyme is the second instalment in the gripping Ages of Malice series by Lloyd Jeffries. We plunge right back into the action here as Emery Merrick grapples with everything that came to pass in Book #1, the secrets that were uncovered, and the evil revealed – all while dealing with his own very powerful demons. With the woman he loves deeply now entangled in the web of evil, the stakes are even higher as Emery and Rhyme face fate in a battle to beat the odds. What ensues makes for a gripping read. Lloyd Jeffries cleverly blends supernatural intrigue, historical depth, and high-stakes drama into a seamless storyline. From the very first chapter, the story pulled me into a world where ancient forces and modern dilemmas collide. Mr. Jeffries’ writing is vividly descriptive, painting scenes that felt both epic in scale and yet still intimate in emotion. The pacing is relentless and purposeful - every twist feels earned, and every revelation deepens the mystery. The characters are layered and flawed, their struggles grounded in very human fears, dilemmas, challenges, and desires - even as they navigate extraordinary circumstances. Rhyme, in particular, emerges as a compelling figure - resilient, intelligent, and morally complex - making her journey all the more compelling. The novel explores power, sacrifice, and the blurred lines between good and evil. Mr. Jeffries doesn’t shy away from moral ambiguity, which makes the stakes feel all the more real. The supernatural elements are woven in with a deft hand, enhancing rather than overshadowing the human drama. This is perfect for fans of intelligent, fast-paced thrillers with a supernatural edge – but be prepared to find yourself hooked, and impatient to dive into the next installment/s. Happy reading! 📚✨
A Measure of Rhyme: Ages of Malice, Book II by Lloyd Jeffries is a religious and historical thriller with dark comedy and pop culture references. This book continues the story from the previous book, with dark secrets and corruption bent on destroying the world. It follows Rhyme Carter, who is in a loveless marriage to the Anti-Christ. She is on a journey to disrupt the plans of her evil husband and get her life back. However, the secret society is pulling the strings in the background to dominate the world and morph it into their ideal and bring prophecy to fruition.
Jeffries does it again. This book brings you right into the meat of the story from the beginning. It is a faithful continuation of the first book in that it keeps up with the same pace of the story, the same level of references and dark comedy, and flows in the same the way. The writing style and such also still brings in the reader to the story. I would say he kicked it up a small notch bringing in bigger and badder characters and adding in higher stakes.
While it may be controversial, I think the decision to add in a major historical event and put a twist on it was an interesting decision to make. I like spins on history in this way, but I think some people might be a bit adverse to it, seeing it as a lessening of the evil that was done. But to me, it adds another layer of evil to the mix. Like the person is still evil in their own right, but the additional evil to get them to do what they were doing adds more suspense and thrill to the story. The book ends on yet another cliff hanger, leaving me wanting more. The reveals in the end has me anticipating the third book. I highly recommend this book to any thriller lovers.
Lloyd Jeffries continues the gripping story in A Measure of Rhyme, the second installment in the Portion of Malice series. The first book raised the question of whether a suicidal reporter could save humanity and himself. This time, the story opens with our protagonist, Emery, as a guest in heaven, a twist that sets the stage for another epic adventure. The first book was an incredible read, and the second installment does not disappoint. The series has the potential to become a longer one, and I eagerly anticipate what comes next. Emery, head of an ancient secret society that seeks to sacrifice the Earth to a bloodthirsty God, finds himself plunged into a world of darkness, deceit, and barbarity.
The battle continues in A Measure of Rhyme, and it has become personal. Cain, fighting under Lucifer, has stolen Emery’s wife, Rhyme, who proves to be a character who can take care of herself, much to the reader's delight. One of the author's notable strengths is the ability to balance biblical elements with action and comedy, creating a work that is both creative and accurate.Jeffries also adds moments of smart humor, such as when Rhyme leaves town, passing a sign that reads, "THANKS FOR VISITING OUR HAPPY PLACE," adding levity to an otherwise tense situation. The author’s writing style is precise and well-crafted, leading readers on an emotional journey and keeping them biting their nails until the very end.
A Measure of Rhyme is a thrilling addition to the Ages of Malice series, and I highly recommend it to fans of supernatural thrillers. Jeffries continues to deliver an immersive, gripping tale, and I look forward to reading more of his work in the future.
As an experienced, talented, visionary author Lloyd Jeffries has crafted an enthralling narrative that is sure to captivate readers. From the moment one lays eyes on the book's striking cover, they are beckoned to delve into its pages. Readers are treated to a thought-provoking tale that offers a fresh perspective on life, religion, morality, and spirituality. With the looming threat of humanity's apocalypse, sacrifices, and the quest for world domination, Jeffries skillfully weaves a biblical thriller that follows Emery Merrick's journey of development, decision-making, and setbacks that were introduced in the first book. Personally, I found myself unable to resist the allure of A Measure of Rhyme. It’s colorful cover and intriguing blurb made it a must-read, and I was not disappointed. This book is an absolute corker of a read, and I wholeheartedly recommend both installments to anyone seeking a well-designed and unmissable reading experience. The characters in A Measure of Rhyme are richly described and fully developed, making it easy to empathize with their situations and problems. The narrative moves along at a smooth pace, keeping readers engaged throughout the story. While some might classify it as a psychological thriller, I found it to be more of a drama. Nevertheless, it is an interesting and lifelike story that is sure to keep readers entertained. Author Lloyd Jeffries has once again delivered a sublime piece of work. I will undoubtedly continue to choose his books in the future, as this one kept me entertained.
Lloyd Jeffries has outdone himself with A Measure of Rhyme: Ages of Malice, the final installment in the Ages of Malice series. This doomsday scenario is rife with suspense, adventure, and romance and offers a unique twist on a tale of survival. The protagonist, Rhyme Carter, finds herself in a predicament - she is married to the Antichrist, but her heart belongs to another man. Heavenly heights to hellish lows, turmoil-filled Earth, and the addled mind of the anti-hero of anti-heroes Emery make this a compelling read.
The inner battle with addiction fought by Emery is incredibly well portrayed. Who in the midst of this battle hasn't felt it wasn't a titanic battle between good and evil?
Fans of ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ will just absorb this book while reading. If you have spent decades envisioning the lyrics of that song in your head, you now have a new tool. There are scenes in this jaw-droppingly well-written book that will have you humming 'pleased to meet you...'
I will not give away anything specific because you must reward yourself by reading this book. Possibly the most jaw dropping conclusion to any book written this century. Do not pass go, just get your hands on A Measure of Rhyme.
The flow of the book keeps the reader glued to the work. Fans of the incredible first book must read this one. If you are a fan of Dan Brown and haven't discovered these books yet, then do so right now. Now the world must bide its time and wait for what will be an amazing third book of this series.
A Measure of Rhyme is a stunning addition to the brilliant series Ages of Malice. This book follows Emery Merrick, whose life has been fraught with difficulty from the very beginning as he struggles to navigate a world of addiction and darkness. Meanwhile, Rhyme Carter, married to an antichrist, devises a plan to defeat her evil husband and reclaim her life and love. As the battle between good and evil unfolds, readers are taken on a thrilling journey that is sure to tug at their hearts and minds.
Jeffries' exceptional storytelling ability is on full display in this book, which is even more engaging if one has read the first installment. Both Emery and Rhyme are well-developed characters who provide a striking bond to this incredible storyline. The author's creativity is outstanding, and the thrilling narration provides a world of its own alongside the characters. The twist and turns, particularly the biblical, political, and humanity-based complexities of the story, make it all the more intriguing and enticing. I thoroughly enjoyed my time reading this masterpiece, and I can say without reservation that it is one of the best books I have ever read. A well-deserved five-star and a highly recommended read for everyone who enjoys an enthralling tale. With A Measure of Rhyme: Ages of Malice, Book II, Jeffries has solidified his place as a master storyteller and captivates readers with his exceptional writing style. Don't miss out on this stunning book!"
I found A Measure of Rhyme: Ages of Malice Book I by Lloyd Jeffries very educational and spiritually enriching. The author carefully crafted the plot and planned character development professionally, making the book so exciting that you wouldn't want to give it a break until you are done reading. Also, Jeffries' application of a conversational tone made the story engaging and relatable.
We can learn several moral lessons from this story. Evil seems powerful and the right way, but in the end, it doesn't win. We see the role of a righteous wife and how she can help save society from the deeds of an evil husband.
Rhyme's role teaches us to do the right thing even when those around us are doing evil. No one's contribution is too small to make an impact on society.
What's more, I was thrilled by how the author used romance and suspense in a well-calculated measure, making the story exciting and raising my anticipation and desire to turn pages to unveil the next turn of events. The story is so immersive. I enjoyed reading it and can't wait to read the author's next issue in this series.
I recommend A Measure of Rhyme to everyone who loves fiction, fantasy, and thriller stories.
I liked that most chapters end with an unexpected twist in the tale. Trying to guess what happens next is often futile because the story progresses in a not-so-obvious manner. Often it is difficult just to guess which character is in question here. However, the book can be understood without having to read the first book in the series.
Knowledge of Christianity and world history will help to understand the story better. Although the story is set out to be a fantasy, there are plenty of references to real-world places and concepts. Certain events have been narrated in a high level of detail, with split-second changes being vividly described and the use of the present tense makes the narration further captivating.
The editing is tight and crisp. There aren't too many characters to keep a track of, although some parallel storytelling is involved. Although many of the characters are fictional, they appear to have been set in the real world, making it unnecessary to include a map showing their world. The narration appears preachy in certain places and I would have liked it better if that was removed.
Lloyd Jeffries has truly captured our hearts yet again with the exciting second book in his captivating four-part series! In this thrilling continuation, we get to journey alongside Rhyme Carter, a formidable and richly layered heroine whose life takes a stunning twist when she becomes entangled with a secret society driven by ambitious, world-changing goals.
As Rhyme expertly navigates this exhilarating terrain, the tension escalates—she’s married to the Antichrist, yet her heart pulls her toward another man! This engaging narrative is not just about survival; it beautifully explores intense themes of love and destiny, transporting Rhyme into a spellbinding realm filled with supernatural marvels and nail-biting danger.
With relentless foes in pursuit, Rhyme must bravely confront formidable enemies and the unyielding forces of fate that threaten her very existence. This masterful blend of action, suspense, fantasy, and rich religious lore guarantees that readers will be hooked from the very first page to the final, breathtaking twist. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure that is as exhilarating as it is enlightening!
Rhyme, our protagonist, has plans brewing in the cauldron of her mind. She's out to thwart her evil husband and reclaim her life from the clutches of the Devil himself. Jeffries weaves a complex web of love, survival, and the battle between good and evil, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Building on the foundation laid in A Portion of Malice, this sequel delves deeper into the secret society's quest to dominate the world, fulfilling prophecies and offering Earth as a sacrificial gift. Jeffries' visionary storytelling and award-winning prowess shine through, creating a spellbinding narrative that is as immersive as it is unpredictable. As mankind hurtles toward the apocalypse, the former librarian turned heroine faces staggering odds. Jeffries masterfully crafts an enthralling story that challenges Rhyme to save not only the planet but also the man she loves from certain destruction. The stakes are high, the tension palpable, and the storytelling is nothing short of extraordinary.
This series took me on a journey that shook my soul. It’s dark, daring, and deeply spiritual, the kind of story that forces you to question everything about good, evil, and human nature.
I first met Cain in A Portion of Malice, and from that moment, I was hooked. The mix of biblical mystery, historical realism, and philosophical depth reminded me of Dan Brown meets Dante’s Divine Comedy, but with more heart and fire.
Then came A Measure of Rhyme, and wow, it’s even more cinematic, emotional, and beautifully written. Rhyme is one of the strongest female leads I’ve ever read, and her dynamic with Cain adds both tenderness and tragedy. The writing itself is poetic, full of light and shadow, heaven and hell, faith and doubt.
These books aren’t just thrillers; they’re mirrors of the human condition. Lloyd Jeffries doesn’t write for comfort, he writes to awaken something in you. If you love stories that are bold, mythic, and full of moral complexity, the Ages of Malice series will stay with you long after the final page.
Fans of Left Behind by Tim LeHaye and Jerry B Jenkins will love this book. Starting with peace in Israel this biblically themed fantasy follows the machinations of immortals from both sides, who control the fate of Israel. Emery is a witness to the end times who feels like he is in a reality TV show. His ex-wife Rhyme has certain skills which she uses to great advantage. Cain, son of Adam, has been cursed by God to walk the earth and is the controlling force behind most of the action, with Longinus his Roman Centurion accomplice. It was only Igneus and Sebastion I found hard to incorporate into the plot, as their story seemed set apart and not fully integrated. Equally, I found the ending rather strange. The battle should be the finale and maybe a review afterwards.
The book is well-paced, good characterisation, visually detailed and impactful. If this book is typical of the author’s writing, this will be a good series.
In the enthralling second installment of the Ages of Malice series, "A Measure of Rhyme," Lloyd Jeffries proves once again why he is a visionary in the world of dark fantasy. Building on the foundation laid in the first book, "A Portion of Malice," Jeffries takes readers on a relentless journey through a world teetering on the edge of chaos.
One of the strengths of Jeffries' writing lies in his ability to craft rich, multidimensional characters. Each character, whether they are allies or adversaries, is meticulously developed, contributing to the complexity of the narrative. As the story progresses, readers are taken deeper into the minds of these characters, making their motivations and choices all the more compelling.
In A Measure of Rhyme, the author uses the current world political climate and human greed to tell a story as old as time. Set in present day Israel, this epic tale weaves Biblical history with modern feuds to create a new take on the classic story of good verses evil. The result is a spine tingling novel filled with action and suspense.
While I didn't realize this was the second book in this series, it was easy to read as a stand alone novel. However, I enjoyed it so much that I plan to go back and read the first.
The book left some loose ends, but I am hoping that is just a segway into a third book in the series. I can't wait to read it!
If you love action and suspense with a bit of supernatural, this is a must read.
This book has a little bit of everything...suspense, the supernatural...a real thriller of a ride. Perfect prose takes readers through the tumultuous relationships between Rhyme, Emery and Cain. Interesting plot idea having the heroine married to the antichrist . Definitely felt the religious undertones and the traditional good verses evil story line. Throughout the book there's such a sense of impending doom--an apocalyptic take, I found myself turning the pages only to reach an ending that won't disappoint. Jeffries writes beautifully and creates well-rounded characters and seamless scene after scene. I would also like to mention that this book, though the second in the series, can definitely be read as a stand alone. This refreshing artist's imagination creates one heck of a read.
