Drowning in Betrayal: An Antonio Cortese Mystery

Rate this book
As the COVID19 pandemic releases its grip on Italy and the rest of the world, Antonio and his new wife, Gabriella, a Colonello in the Carabinieri, are finally able to reconnect for their long overdue honeymoon. They join Antonio’s Uncle Nicolo, Aunt Sofia, and Antonio’s newly widowed sister, Alessia, on a sailing yacht to cruise the sun soaked French Riviera and Italian coasts.

Antonio is happier than he has been in years but their idyllic time is short lived as they are drawn into a deadly Corsican vendetta with roots going back to the Second World War. They vow not to become involved but find themselves drowning in an ocean of betrayal and deceit which threatens to destroy their very lives. They must work together to unravel a dark past and painful truth, no matter how close to home it falls.

The great Cortese family characters and the intrigue continue. This one takes place off the coast of Cinque Terre during Antonio and Gabriella's honeymoon and involves a Corsican vendetta. Although there were plenty of stops for gelato and cornetti, I missed the typical Cortese meal with all the trimmings and pairings. Maybe the next adventure.

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Riviera, this story delivers nonstop intrigue and emotional depth. Antonio and Gabriella’s long awaited peace turns into a heart stopping fight for survival, uncovering secrets that span generations. A beautifully written, edge of your seat read that keeps you hooked until the end.

Antonio’s midnight swim with a gunshot wound was a bit too much, but all in all a good read
