What a pleasure!

Main characters Sammi and Ajay feel like members of your friend group as you follow their sweet, developing relationship through its bumps and turns.

The novel’s focus on familial cultural differences are relatable for any couple whose families come from differing cultural backgrounds. The zoomed-in details of engagements and marriages in Indian culture were a delight to read about (as someone who doesn’t know much on the topic, but has always wanted to attend an Indian wedding to experience the beautiful traditions!) especially from the lens of Sammi.

You’ll feel all of the frustrations of these characters as they grapple with making their parents, each other, and themselves happy throughout the story. Ultimately, everyone gets the happily ever after we hope for!

Enjoy!

The title and cover of the book caught my eye and I decided to pick it up and it did not disappoint. The book was hard to put down and an easy read. The story is told from the perspective of Sammi Miller who is neurodivergent and has to navigate family drama, career aspirations that intertwines with her love interest and the cultural difference and expectations.
I also loved that this is based on a true story and I could feel the realism and authenticity and the author did a great job making the emotions feel very real.
I hope this turns into the movie!!!

I first came across An Indian-ish Proposal while scrolling through Bookstagram and couldn’t help but comment on it—it felt like fate! Not only do Molly Machado and I share the same first name, but I’m also married to a South Asian, so I immediately felt a personal connection to the book. Molly, being the absolute sweetheart she is, kindly offered me an #ARC, and I’m so grateful to have had the chance to read it!

As someone who’s in a multicultural and interfaith marriage, I’ve always looked for stories that authentically capture the blend of two vastly different cultures, and An Indian-ish Proposal does just that. The novel’s focus on familial and cultural differences is incredibly relatable for any couple navigating such dynamics. You’ll feel every bit of frustration as the characters try to balance pleasing their families, staying true to themselves, and nurturing their relationship.

One moment that really hit home for me was when the FMC was shopping for engagement rings and didn’t like any of the jewelry—so relatable! My mother-in-law always buys me jewelry that’s completely not my taste, so I couldn’t help but laugh and sympathize.

Molly beautifully explores the challenges of merging cultures, and I particularly loved how the story ultimately gives us the happy-ever-after we all hope for. The journey is heartfelt and authentic, with plenty of moments that made me smile (especially the FMC’s first experience with panipuri!).

I highly recommend An Indian-ish Proposal to anyone looking for a fresh, modern love story that feels both unique and deeply familiar. Five stars from me!

Okay…. Where do I begin.

I found this book randomly by scrolling through Tik Tok. I was immediately attracted to the title, the multicultural aspect and that I relate very closely to this story, but in reverse. Learning American culture was very hard for me. ANYWAY-

I was concerned that I wouldn’t like this book because I don’t do romance. At all. In fact, I avoid it at all costs unless the MMC is a tortured soul that enjoys a little murder on the side, and has tattoos. BUT, I was very pleasantly surprised.

I think the main aspect that I loved about this book was that (whether this is true or not) I think this is a true, real life story…. It just seemed so beautifully…. Normal, but also. Beautifully realistic in the cross-cultural world. The blending of cultures, of families, trying to understand beliefs that have been forced upon or engrained from birth… on both sides.

Also…. HEALTHY COMMUNICATION!? What!? Love that.

It was just so real and these are real issues and concerns that people face. Especially a 30+ successful, hardworking woman who would also like to get married and have children WITHOUT sacrificing their career. There’s a clock ticking and that puts pressure on new relationships because, let’s be real……. “SHIT. OR. GET. OFF.THE.POT” we need commitment.

This was funny, heartfelt, tear-jerking, warm, fuzzy, butterfly inducing, big bear hug material. This made me really happy.

Many thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC of this fantastic book.

This was author Molly Machado's debut novel and it was- in a gist - stunning.

Sammi Miller was one of the realest and coolest FMCs I've read so far- a neurodivergent queen who's killing it at work, overanalyzes everything to death (a trait in the genetic make up of every millennial) and knows her way around a gin cocktail. (I looked up Bathtub Gin. It's a real place and I wanna go!!)

Ajay Ferreira is a smart, hotshot engineer whose warmth and laid back personality win you over right at the get-go.
They meet courtesy of Bumble and their first date is charmingly awkward.

One of the very first things I noticed is how very real these characters and their lives are. All too often, a romance novel has protagonists with the most tragic backstories just to give them unique traumas that manifest in higher stakes and drama.
This was not one of those stories.

Sammi had relatable real-life problems: stress from worrying about her ailing mother but also support from her equally loving family, her job that she didn't love but that led her to better things, her dating life that wasn't lacking but rife with doubt and overthinking.

And Ajay was wonderful and kind, but he wasn't perfect either. His shortcomings were subtle at first but became glaringly obvious when he was faced with situations that challenged his relationship with his parents and Sammi.

But they communicated - they talked and listened and kept course correcting. This doesn't always make for riveting book material but the author somehow managed to make mundane but real issues so universally relatable, it invoked all the intense feelings of being in the characters shoes.

The other thing I noticed was that this wasn't your typical Hollywood interracial rom-com filled mostly with hilarious facepalm moments, and a dreamy happy ending. This book had all those laugh-out-loud moments, but it also had the hard truth about trying to foster cross cultural familial relationships. The logistics of navigating multicultural norms and traditions is much more nuanced than My Big Fat Greek Wedding where your future father-in-law's biggest issue is his Windex obsession.

These families were glaringly human, full of hopes, dreams and flaws. The story-telling had so much raw honesty and vulnerability and love, it was impossible not to want to give every single character here a hug.

(Except for the Lindsays. Screw those two brown nosers!)

Here's hoping this will not the last we'll see of this author!

Sammi Miller moves from Manhattan back to Seattle to help with her mom’s failing health forcing her to leave her current job for a job she hates. Her goal is to star her own company that will elevate female leaders, and to hopefully find “the one”. When she meets Ajay Ferreira, she falls hard and fast for him. She opens up to him and allows him to meet her parents and is shocked to find out the Ajay hasn’t even mentioned her to his parents. She feels as she’s the only one taking this relationship seriously…but that’s not true. Ajay lets her know that his parents want him to settle down with an Indian woman of their choosing. This causes Sammi to have a lot of anxiety about their relationship and questions whether or not this work.

This was such a cute romance story! Sammi is so relatable when it comes to her dating concerns. She knows what she wants and is not afraid to speak up about it. I love how both her and Ajay were able to communicate about their relationship goals in order to have a successful relationship.

An Indian-ish Proposal
Author: Molly Machado
Available: Now!
•••••••

An Indian-ish Proposal is based on the true story of author Molly Machado! I found this novel to be not only whitty and charming, but also a beautiful tale of two families coming together to dissolve cultural barriers. Introducing future in-laws to one another is already a stressful process, but as we learn with Sammi and Ajay, trying to do so while involved in a multicultural romance (Sammi is American and Ajay is Indian) unveils even more challenges than Sammi was prepared for.
•••••••
Sammi, an independent businesswoman, has come to learn the exact direction she wants her life to go in. She is tired of immature men and being treated less than she deserves.
Enter Ajay, an upbeat engineer who is happy to “go with the flow”; aside from needing a relationship push now and again from Sammi. We learn, over the course of the novel, that this may be due to the fact that Ajay and his family have different dating, marriage, and family values and beliefs than Sammi.
In order for things to work, Sammi must learn to be patient and communicate with Ajay; Ajay must learn to be a bit more proactive and take Sammi’s wants/needs into consideration.
•••••••
I very much loved the humor Machado brought to such an important topic. The snarky remarks and Sammi’s inner dialogue had me chuckling throughout. I found the cultural aspects of the novel fascinating; Machado touches upon the Indian culture in a variety of ways: food, clothing, family, customs, and so much more.

Thank you so much Molly for allowing me to read a copy of your debut novel!

There is just something about Machado’s writing that I really enjoy. The characters are relatable, and the flow of the story is good. It’s a smooth and fun read that also has real meaning; it showcases love, family and what it means for people to be close to each other.

Told in the voice of Sammi Miller, a neurodivergent millennial (I see you and I feel you, Sammi), the story hits on key emotions that we have all felt, from pangs of fear and anxiety to jarringly sad moments to the pure joy of finding a real connection with someone.

Machado does a good job writing characters that are all clever but with their own individual perspectives and humor. Ajay, Sammi’s love interest, is charming and down-to-earth, even when he’s being obtuse. The main characters are all real enough that you intermittently laugh with them, cry with them, and occasionally want to kick them. I love good character-building, and Machado does it well.

If you like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, realistic characters, multicultural romance, and feel-good moments, this book is for you.

I'm looking forward to more from Machado in the future!

An Indian-ish Proposal - Molly Machado

This Book was so sweet. I throughly enjoyed it. Thank you Molly for giving me the opportunity to read your story. I love that it was inspired by her own relationship as well.

This Story follows Sammi. Our main female character who is a Strong independent businesswoman who is ready to begin her life. She has dreams of starting her own PR firm, and won't let her ADHD or anxiety get in the way. She meets Ajay, an easy going Tech Executive.

As things become more serious and their relationship progresses, Sammi Struggles with the differences between their cultures. Especially with the differences around dating. Sammi can't quite comprehend the reasonings behind it all, but she has a strong communication line with Ajay and learns how to trust him in the process.

This book was such a cozy read. I enjoyed the banter between Sammi and Ajay, and I felt as I was reading it I was reading about friends. Sammi's Inner monologue was also relatable as I have a similar chaotic brain pattern. I definitely would recommend this book if you are looking for a light, feel good book.

A raw, real, and heartwarming tale of cross-cultural romance

I absolutely adored this book. Molly Machado’s debut novel hooks you from the very beginning and truly immerses you in Sammi and Ajay’s two very different worlds.

This is not your typical romance novel — though it hits all the classic notes of the journey to finding “the one” in the modern world, it brings a refreshing and unique perspective as the couple navigates their extremely different cultural expectations about relationships and marriage.

As someone who comes from a multicultural family, I’ve always appreciated (but have struggled to find) stories that explore the dynamic of two vastly different cultures merging. “An Indian-ish Proposal” ticks that box perfectly. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a unique modern love story!

I have been waiting to read this and it didn't disappoint. Seen on TikTok and immediately the synopsis got my attention. A delightful, charming story of two people with a few roadblocks on their path to love. So relatable! If you have been to India you will be flooded with memories of your time in that incredible country, if not you will feel like you have been. I love that this is based on the author's own experience, this shines through the storytelling and adds just that little bit of spice that is necessary in all things Indian. Great story, great read - loved it

What a fantastic debut book! So many parts where I actually laughed out loud - the Microwave Engineer, the toilet paper, the PR brief to meet the families. I learned so much about the nuances of “engagements” in these two cultures and the complexities of merging them together. The neurodivergent character, Sammy, felt authentic and relatable. A great read not just for the fun of the romance, but to also make a lasting impression that you’ll reflect back on.

This book does a fantastic job of showing the depth of real relationships, from navigating complicated family dynamics to supporting each-other’s individual aspirations. This was a comforting read for me. The relationship between Sammie and Ajay reminds me so much of my husband and I, so that was another reason why the story resonated with me so much.

Their budding intercultural romance was an eye opener for me. I loved learning about the cultural expectations on both sides and was happy to read that love triumphed in the end! I highly recommend this book to all romance lovers and look forward to more from this author.

I was given an ARC copy to read and I have to say I truly enjoyed the story. I’m not an avid romance reader, but what made this story shine were the elements that helped develop the two main characters. There are some very real world complications that make up their lives, i.e., the protagonist’s mom is dealing with Alzheimer’s and there is a real sweetness to her interactions with her mom. You can feel the heartache of her having to watch her mom suffer through the frustration and loss that comes with this disease. Though this is not the central theme of the book, it helps the reader understand some of the motivations of the protagonist. At the heart of this story is the two people from two very different cultures coming together to create their own love story and their own family. In reality, a true partnership is made up of two very different people learning and choosing to come together. I think this book did a good job of relating some of those insecurities, frustrations, small victories, and funny moments that many can relate to in their own stories of finding love and choosing to build a life with the person they have chosen. In short, love is the catalyst of this story and family makes up the rest in this funny, sweet, and relatable read. If you’re a fan of romance, especially more modern romances, and even more specifically, interracial romance, then you would surely enjoy this debut offering by Molly Machado. Many thanks to Molly for the ARC copy, it was so fun to get to be on the “inside” before the books publishing date. What a treat!

This is a story about two people who are at the stage of wanting to settle down, so they hop on a dating app, meet each other, and decide they’re compatible enough. There’s no real love-love here. It’s just liking each other and thinking, “Eh, this could work.” Honestly, there isn’t much romance in the book at all. It’s mostly Sammi bending over backwards for an Indian guy and his family, while the guy himself does the absolute bare minimum.

This should not have been a HEA. Sammi, girl… leave that man. Date him if you want, but please do not marry him.

Sammi did everything. She adapted to his culture, his parents, their expectations, their disrespect — all of it. She even suffered through a stressful, uncomfortable trip to India. And what did the MMC do? Nothing. He hid their relationship from his parents. When he finally told them, he let them think like she was temporary. He let them interrogate her disrespectful without defending her. He didn’t even say “I love you” until Sammi asked him why he hadn’t. She had one condition: that he propose before they left for India. Did he do it? No. Sammi literally had to give him an ultimatum. Even then, he made zero effort. HE PROPOSED TO HER IN THOSE 7 MINUTES WHILE THEY WERE WAITING FOR THE UBER RIDE TO THE AIRPORT. WITH A 50 DOLLAR RING GUYSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

He never stood up for their relationship. He let his parents bulldoze everything: the engagement ring, the wedding planning, the disrespect. He stayed quiet when his father stereotyped Sammi, her culture, and her family. Not every American woman divorces her husband. Not every American woman separates her husband from his family. But when Sammi finally called out their behaviour, suddenly Mr. Silent had a voice to defend his side.

At first, I thought the book was feeding Indian stereotypes — but then I learned it was based on the author’s real experiences. And girl… you deserve better. Also: India has trash bins in bathrooms. Toilet paper exists. It has for decades. Especially in a metropolitan city like Mumbai. Most adult family members have their own rooms, and grown sons do not sleep in their parents’ room. Most homes have at least one guest room. A lot of the “culture shock” felt outdated.

Overall, it was a story about Sammi suffering while settling for the absolute bare minimum. The ending was disappointing. After everything she went through, she gets a cozy, at-home proposal and that’s supposed to fix it? No.

Signed,
An Indian girl: don’t fall for Indian boys.

The author's debut book, "An Indianish Proposal", is a triumph! Molly Machado’s candid and honest storytelling delves into the complexities of inter-cultural relationships, cultural identity, and the power of love and hope. As an Indian American married to a Caucasian American woman, I found myself deeply invested in the story, relating to the characters' experiences and challenges.
Without giving away too much, the FMC takes moves across the country and returns home to take care of some serious family matters, all while trying to trying to rebuild her professional life, and then accidentally falls for the MMC who is from a culture unlike her own. The topics covered in this book aren’t like what one would expect from famous yet clichéd movies like the My Big Fat Greek Wedding or tv shows like 90-day Fiancé. Instead, an Indian-ish Proposal" is a candid yet humorous, delightfully honest, and thought-provoking read that delves into the complexities of inter-cultural relationships, the challenges that come with merging with another culture, while not losing your own, the marrying of two very different cultures (and families), and all with the power of love, hope, and compromise. With its perfect blend of humor, relatability, and realness, this book is a must-read for anyone who has ever navigated or plans to navigate the nuances of cultural identity and intercultural relationships.

The book's strength lies in its ability to balance humor and wit with deeper, more serious themes. The author tackles potentially uncomfortable topics with sensitivity and humor, making the book an enjoyable and thought-provoking read. The characters are well-developed, realistic, and relatable, and the story is full of love, romance, and hope.

The author's writing is engaging, witty, and insightful, making it easy to become invested in the characters' journeys. The book's ability to visualize characters and situations clearly is a notable strength, and the ending is satisfying and fulfilling.

Overall, "An Indian-ish Proposal" is a must-read for anyone who has navigated inter-cultural relationships, cultural identity, and finding one's place in the world. It's a testament to the power of love, hope, and resilience, and a reminder that two people from different parts of the world can be each other's perfect match.

I look forward to reading more from this talented author in the future!

What a masterful depiction of multicultural romance - with just the right amount of spicy chemistry to keep things exciting. The depictions of Sammi's family life were a total highlight. This is a real family with real life dynamics, challenges, relationships, and dialogue. Machado depicts this family with such authenticity that I couldn't help but feel like a guest at the Miller family’s dinner table, enjoying a glass of white wine myself.

And how refreshing to read a realistic portrayal of TRUE partnership. This is not just a whirlwind romance; it’s two individuals intentionally choosing each other and choosing to build a life together. The main characters are richly developed, extending beyond their romantic connection since we see them in their element at work. I was so delighted to read a book with characters with jobs and careers beyond the tropes of small town bakers, winemakers, and florists. And the secondary characters were incredible - couldn't get enough of Sammi's siblings and who doesn't love a workplace bestie?!!

The honest and direct dialogue between Sammi and Ajay about their future together is refreshing in a genre that is all too often overly reliant on miscommunication for drama. Here, there’s no room for doubt about their feelings, providing a mature and satisfying narrative arc that so many readers will appreciate.

An Indian-ish Proposal is a heartwarming tale that delivers more than just a love story; it’s a beautiful testament to the complexity and beauty of diverse relationships and the shared human experience of finding love and thoughtfully building a future together.

Disclosure: I received this book as an advanced reader. 4.5 stars.

First things first, I enjoyed the story. It is very clearly enriched by lived experiences. The story flows well from beginning to end, with only a few spots, toward the end of the book, where it felt like the story jumped hours and/or days suddenly and without enough separation/buffer.

Being a person who is in a mixed-culture relationship, I connected to the book on a personal level and very much appreciated the portrayal of the difficulties that Sammi and Ajay have to face. There is an art to communicating through cultural differences, both ahead of time and in the moment. The reader is given a front seat to the complex and complicated learning process of these two characters.

Sammi, as a neurodivergent character, is written quite well. I found myself cheering her on as much as I went through moments of being deeply annoyed by her decisions. But that is what makes Sammi feel so real - she is not always perfect or likable and is, in fact, sometimes downright infuriating. The one major beef I have with her character is the feeling that this chronic overthinker didn't really seem to do much research into her significant other's culture. The seemingly constant surprise by aspects of South Indian culture felt out of character for someone who spends much time preparing for every situation. If I could change one thing, that would be it.

A Wonderful Insight into Indian Culture and Traditions

Molly Machado scores a win with her debut novel, An Indian-ish Proposal.

Sammi and Ajay's romance demonstrates the confusion, misconceptions, and eventual humor that occurs when two dramatically different cultures collide. It is an amusing East meets West rom-com.

Ajay's calm demeanor is the yin to Sammi's overthinking yang as the couple navigates "meeting the parents", the engagement Proposal (with a capital P), and dealing with parents who " only want the best" for their child. She also deals with Alzheimer's disease and ADHD with sensitivity and compassion which I found very open and heart-warming.

ust like the movie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, this novel is a multicultural romp that underlines the most important things in life: Love and Family.

I hope the author will share more adventures of Sammi and Ajay in the future. I'd sure like to read about their wedding and maybe life when their first little one arrives.

Well done, Ms. Machado.

If you like clashing cultural expectations, insufferable neurodivergent MCs, and humorous family dynamics like My Big Fat Greek Wedding or the Big Sick then you'll like An Indian-ish.

This is the fictionalized version of the true story of how I met and and eventually decided to marry my Indian husband.

In the time it took me to write this book, I got married and made two actual babies. It has been a labor of love and one of the hardest things I've ever done. Publishing a book comes with a steep learning curve, but it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

The characters in this book along with the relationships and challenges that comes with them feel real and incredibly human because they are based on real people and events. I wanted to write a book that realistically portrayed what happens when two people from VERY different cultures combine their lives and fall in love. It is messy, complicated, and often incredibly hilarious (if you let it.)

When I first saw this book on TikTok I KNEW I had to read it! A while woman and an Indian American getting together and overcoming their cultural challenges? YES, must read!

Molly did not disappoint! I found myself surprised and frustrated with the challenges they faced, right there with Sammi and Ajay along the way. It was incredibly interesting to read about, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. The plot follows more of a real-life arc than most romances I read, which was refreshing and surprising.

Highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a grounded romance and learn a little something about a different culture along the way!

Molly Machado's "An Indian-ish Proposal" seamlessly weaves together the complexities of romance, cultural differences, and the nuances of neurodivergence in a heartwarming and humorous narrative. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Seattle and India, this novel introduces readers to Sammi, a successful career-woman and aspiring entrepreneur, navigating both the challenges of caring for her mother with early-onset Alzheimer's and the unexpected joys of falling in love with Ajay, an Indian man.

At its core, the novel delves into the intricacies of merging lives and families from different cultural backgrounds, offering a refreshing and authentic portrayal of the hurdles and triumphs that accompany such relationships. Machado deftly infuses humor into the narrative, particularly through Sammi's neurodivergent traits like ADHD and anxiety, adding layers of relatability and endearment to her character.

One of the book's standout features is Machado's vivid and engaging writing style, which not only captures the essence of Seattle and India but also immerses readers in the emotional journey of the protagonists. The author's own experiences lend a unique authenticity to the narrative, making the characters and their struggles feel remarkably real.

"An Indian-ish Proposal" is a delightful read for those seeking a blend of tasteful romance, genuine cultural exploration, and insightful portrayals of neurodivergence. It appeals to readers looking for meaningful stories that go beyond clichés, offering a nuanced and engaging perspective on love, family, and personal growth.

Overall, Molly Machado's novel is poised to captivate audiences with its heartfelt storytelling, relatable characters, and thoughtful exploration of modern relationships amidst cultural diversity.

An Indian-ish Proposal is a fun, heartwarming romance. Sammi and Ajay are reliable characters who suck you into their story from the first page. I loved their banter and could not wait to see how their relationship would progress. Machado presents their struggles to understand and respect each other’s culture, background, and relationship priorities with empathy showing that if you love someone you need to meet them halfway. Highly recommend checking it out for a laidback read with characters you root for (despite their flaws), and insightful reflections on multicultural relationships.

I truly loved this book and was deeply drawn to the cultural differences the couple had to navigate together. There were moments when I wanted to shake the FMC, but seen through her eyes, her reactions felt honest and completely justified. The supporting characters were incredible and added so much heart to the story. In the best possible way, I couldn’t help feeling a little jealous of the experience they shared. I read this book during the December holidays, and somehow it warmed me from the inside in a way no Christmas-themed book I read so far did.

Sammi's perspective on love and life was uplifting and relateable. Highly recommend!

Such a realistic book of a white woman and Indian man navigating their differences as they fall in love and approach their engagement. I hope there’s a sequel about their wedding and newlywed year.
