Asher Fields is destined to be a Pegasus hunter, just like his father and his father before him. But when he fails to pull the trigger during his final hunt as an apprentice, Asher is forever marked by shame.
Determined to protect the creatures he’s only just beginning to understand, Asher unwittingly causes a tragic accident. Wracked by grief and guilt, he disappears into the wilderness, far from civilization and safety. There, a witch offers to remove his pain, in exchange for his memories and eternal servitude.
And she won’t take no for an answer.
Destry Kivisto is a woman with secret. Descended from a royal bloodline, her name marks her with power — and as the target of a bitter vendetta. After her adopted mother’s death, Destry is hunted by those who wish to wield the power she secretly holds.
The only option left is to run.
Given sanctuary by a southern kingdom in return for her presence on their battlefield, Destry quickly becomes entangled in the politics of freedom. But above the betrayal and bloodshed one truth rings clear: friend and foe alike have the same enemy.

I’ve been in a slump for so long, my mood was rotten, the books weren’t vibing…..
Until I read this little beauty.
Not only was this food for my starved soul, but I can’t begin to explain what a fresh perspective this brings to fantasy/romantasy.
Clans at war, magical beasts, beautiful imagery. The story felt like it was something ancient from lore. Preserved and spoken to me as if I was sitting under the stars, watching embers from a fire drift into the sky and dancing until they turn to ash. It felt important. It felt poetic.
I don’t want to give too much away, but if you love horses, politics, self determination, against all odds, strong FMC, multi POV, enchanting worldscapes with a dash of spice… then what are you waiting for?
Summary: Multi POV (Two humans & One animal), slow burn - enemies to lovers, elemental magic, fast paced, learning to fight / control magic, morally grey mmc’s, horse - Pegasi - Unicorns, epic wilderness
“Come hell or high winds”
Okay so I have never read anything like this! What a bloody magical world I’ve been living in 🦄 Destry’s, Asher’s & Orrin had me absolutely enchanted, I wanted to know more & I could not stop reading… I love the character development & all the magical moments within this book 🫶🏼 Honestly if you love Fantasy or really magical stories this one is for you!!
“There was a time when all I ever wanted in life was endless books and the time to enjoy them, but as sweet childhood filtered away and expectation lay heavily on me, those dreams changed”
P.S. Coan has my heart & I cannot wait for book two!!
I think this was a good book. It was unquie. The characters were loveable. It took me a minute to get into, but im glad i stuck with it. Cant wait for the next one
As someone who loved The Silver Brumby and Spirit growing up, it's not surprise I loved this book. The world and lore is unique, which I always appreciate in a fantasy novel and the FMC, Destry, is strong and sure of herself. Not too spicy, and an excellent first book for an indi author, I encourage all who are curious to jump in!
"The Night Pegasus had flown away, taking his fire feathers with him, leaving only sparkling stars and a solemn half-moon in its wake."
Talk about a new take on a POV. I have never read an animal POV done so well. This book was amazing. It showed the authors love for the animals and how she understands their bodies to their movement. To the lore behind each element and tribe.
2024 - Ice and fire hold the power of truth. They burn away the lies."
This is a highlight book for this year. It was stunning and magical!
There are 3 POV, and one is a horse. The setting is beautifully written. I love winter books. The magic and spirits were completely unique. I never read anything like it, and I want more!
Asher is a lost son, and the wild ward places him under her control to do her bidding with a nijinx horse Destry is an orphan daughter with a birthright men either are trying to take or kill. Orrin is a horse, last of his kind. The readers get to see the characters and other horses from his eyes.
"I am the light that burns the darkness. I am the glens under snow and icecovered lakes. I am sky and wind and hope and grief. I am Destry Kivisto Koskivarri, and I am here for you.”
I love Frozen 2, what I love most is the spirits and the magic from the moive. This book captured that for me and left me feeling breathless.
This book was absolutely magical. I’m obsessed. From the first page, I was pulled into this rich, heartbreaking world and I never wanted to leave. The writing? Stunning. The emotion? Raw. The twists and action? NON-STOP. The magic system and world-building and pace had me in a chokehold!
Let’s talk about Destry Kivisto, our MFC!! She had so much depth and strength I could cry. I LOVED her. Her power doesn’t scream... It simmers. Her resolve, her fire, her ability to keep going even when the world is crumbling around her AND people trying to kill her? Breathtaking. She’s the kind of character that I love as a MFC. She doesn't just survive, she endures, and you feel every emotion along the way.
The multiple POVs were done SO well. Every voice felt distinct, and there was one super unique POV that added this extra magical layer to the story that just made everything feel even more immersive and emotionally charged. It completely pulled me in and gave such a fresh angle to the narrative.
This world is brutal, beautiful, and morally grey in all the best ways. You never know who to trust, and just when you think you’ve figured something out... BAM. Another twist. And another. H.A. Walker does not hold back. And what made it even better is that even the so-called “bad” characters are written with such nuance that there were moments I genuinely felt sorry for them. You start to realise how thin the line is between good and evil in this world and how easily someone can fall over the edge.
The writing was absolutely gorgeous. Vivid, lyrical, and emotional. I felt what the characters felt. I saw what they saw. It wasn’t just reading, it was experiencing. The world-building, the history, the quiet unfolding of each character’s backstory and trauma? PERFECTION. It didn’t overwhelm, it slowly wrapped around you until you were in it.
This is not just a fantasy story. It's layered, emotional, and unforgettable. The emotional stakes, the plot, the characters, and the world kept me glued to every single page.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m diving straight into Dawn Sky Rising because I need answers. IMMEDIATELY.
Well, I didn’t realize I needed a fantasy with a main POV from a horse, yet after reading Night Sky Burning I found this world so absolutely new and refreshing that I quickly became addicted.
The world is set in a wintery wilderness where spirits, humans, and magical creatures are pushing and pulling in a good vs. evil battle. We follow along with three points of view between Asher the hunter, Destry the “light wielder”, and Orrin the mountain horse/prince of the forest. This story is fast paced, and I think part of that is because we get the different vantage points of these three MCs. Yet switching between each point of view doesn’t feel frustrating because the chapters flow through the plot so seamlessly.
While Destry is my favorite, because I love to see the developments she makes throughout the book and the inner strength she begins to cultivate, we are also introduced to a variety of side characters, human and magical creatures alike. I love the intricacies of how these characters are connected and the ebb and flow of each of them interacting with our main three characters.
Most of all the elemental magic system and the magical equine creatures made the story unique. Our human characters possess either light, shadow, or ice magic; there are also mountain horses, pegasi, and unicorns. My nine year old heart flutters at being able to read an adult fantasy where these animals exist! The interaction between the horses and the humans is so interesting, and honestly makes this reader’s My Little Pony dreams come true as an adult.
I seriously love this book, and I am so stinkin’ excited to continue reading this series!
Oh jeez where to even start. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I will try not to be too spoilery. 😬
The book was action packed, without sacrificing any details. I can’t talk up the writing enough. The writing was beautiful, flowed well, and I seriously can’t believe it’s a debut novel. It takes place on earth, but I thought the magic, spirits, and settings were unique and so interesting. I could tell it was very thought out. I enjoyed the multi POV a whole lot more than I thought I would.
Gracien’s death was absolutely brutal. I was not prepared at all for it, especially after Asher’s initial descent into darkness. It gave valg collared Dorian vibes, so unsettling. I look forward to book to and seeing what life is like for Asher post wild ward. The wild ward and her sire were equal parts cunning and wicked.
I was so fooled with Thorra. I really liked him as a character, to the point I was slightly peeved I waited nearly 250 pages to meet him, and the ending really had me questioning everything lol. I saw nothing coming.
The writing is phenomenal. I especially loved the story of Volaarite and the story about the creation of Serebo. The lore was easily settled into the story without being an info dump, while also being memorizing to read. The spirits themselves and how they work with their scions was all so interesting. I cannot wait for book 2!
Thank you so much H A Walker for the copy of your book! 🖤
Tropes: - multi POV (two MCs and one animal) - elemental/unique magic - pegasus/horses/unicorns - morally grey MMC - strong FMC - epic wilderness
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
*Disclaimer* This one took me a while to get through but not due to the book itself! With life and starting a new job, I could only manage to read in little bits when I could. I will definitely need to re-read to fully appreciate the detail and effort put into this novel by HA Walker. This did not feel like a novel that you pick up and read here n there, it definitely felt more like something you need to immerse yourself in and I hope that comes across in my review!
Firstly, the cover. OMG how gorgeous is it. I fully wanted to be able to teleport to those mountains when I saw it! Pegasus, Mountain Horses, Unicorns Nijinxes (wait til you meet them, I actually really loved them) Wild wards and magic Kings and queens Battles for territory Magical Spirits Multiple POV Indie Author!
This novel has so much to it, and I certainly don't feel that I absorbed all that it is, which is personally disappointing and I will 100% be re-reading when I'm in a calmer place mentally!
I really enjoyed Destry's (FMC) chapters and found myself looking forward to the times it was her turn to tell her story. At first I was rooting for Coen, and then Aalto, but then I thought something was going to come to head between Destry and Asher, but perhaps that's book two?! Having finished the book, I'm now back to team Coen. HA Walker's descriptions and world building is fantastic and really detailed. I loved her descriptions of characters, events and settings.
Solid 3.5 stars! A debut author and an amazing first book!
There is a lot going on in this story, with three POV's, political machinations and epic magic/elemental powers being gained/released. The first half of the book is a little hard to get into. It's a little slow, but it's mainly due to world building. I really became invested around the 45% mark. The plot really thickens and the POV's are coming together. Their motivations and scheming comes to a head in a battle, which won't be the last!! With plot twists you won't see coming, and a cliff hanger which will leave you reeling (but not one that leaves you frustrated but rather excited for what's to come for Destry, and Asher!) it's a great first book to a series, that will be very entertaining!
I have never read a book like this; I love the different equine species and their relationship to the humans. and seriously, I'm not sure who I want the love story to be about, is it Coen? Asher? Aalto? I love them all, for who they are what they could become!!!
Thank you so much H.A. Walker for gifting me an advance reader copy to honestly review!
Night Sky Burning follows three main characters, Destry, Asher, and Orrin. What makes this such a unique fantasy read is the fact that one of the main characters is a mountain horse, and I found their POV really interesting, and refreshing.
The magic system was different, and I loved that each Spirit had their own representative species in the world of The Boreals. I loved the imagery used throughout, and kept imagining snowy landscapes underneath the Northern Lights. The stunning cover of Night Sky Burning definitely drew me in.
I felt drawn to Destry’s storyline the most at first, and enjoyed her growth throughout the novel. Asher was the most mysterious of the main characters, and I feel like there could be more to his backstory hiding there 👀 It did take me a moment to really get into it (as is the usual with fantasy world building for me), but I cannot wait to see where book 2 takes our main trio.
Night Sky Burning is wonderful debut novel from Australian indie author, H. A. Walker, and I cannot wait for book 2 to read more!
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy. This review is my honest opinion.
I’m gonna say this with my whole chest: Night Sky Burning is easily better than a large portion of what gets published through large scale houses. I worked in a bookstore for years and sometimes I think authors snub their noses at the idea of a goddamn editor. H.A Walker either did an incredible job of editing this herself or she got someone good to do it.
The writing in Night Sky Burning was magical without being pretentious, the world building not only makes sense but is a fantastic journey that is paced very well, the characters all had depth and interesting interactions, and if you’re an animal/horse lover than the POV from Orrin the mountain horse is soooo good. I was hesitant about how it was going to be done but it was very successfully pulled off.
I maybe wish there was a little humour in them but that’s only because I’m used to fantasy that’s funny at times, but that is a personal preference, it is by no means a lacking for this book.
A big thank you to the author for my early copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was a very magical and whimsical story. It had a very intricate magic system which I will admit took me a bit to get used to! But once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it! It had a beautiful setting filled with magical beasts ie Pegasai, unicorns, trinitors, Mounties etc.
The POV from the horse is what drew me to this book and i really enjoyed that aspect.
Destry is a feisty and determined FMC who doesn’t know much about her past/heritage. We did start to find out a bit towards the end and hopefully more comes to light in book 2. I also want to know what is going to happen to Asher and where he will end up!
Of course the book finished on a cliffhanger and a plot twist I didn’t pick up on.
There was a time when I was looking for a fantasy book with Pegasus or Unicorns and I found the book with both. Plus dark Pegasus (best way to describe them lol). If you are looking for a book with the political intrigue of Game of Thrones, the heartbreak of The Last Unicorn, and the Witcher vibe, you have found your book.
I loved this book, even if I was stressed out throughout the entirety of it lol. This is the most unique story I have ever read. And the writing is absolutely beautiful and immersive. While there is a touch of romance it is definitely not the main focus this is more character and plot-driven. The romance is definitely secondary. However, the author has said that the romance and spice will amp up in the second book.
Do not wait to read this book! It's out on KU now and worth the read.
Kicking myself I let this book sit on my shelf for so long. The author really poured her love of horses into this story. I felt it all the way through.
I loved, I hated and I loved Asher again. At the start I wanted all the Orrin chapters, then found myself just as in love with Destry. The way the author describes the horses, paints such a vivid picture in my mind, I can see them so well. Ebrel is my favourite 😉 the lone roan.
I found the complexity of the spirits and their scions and the magic system amazing, I was captivated. There was one chapter where I wanted to throw the book, but I let it sit for a while 5min before picking it up again (iykyk).
Destry discovers so much about herself and the bond she shares with her 4 legged friends is incredible. A very well written story. I cannot wait for book 2!
Fast-paced fantasy book with a magical world, elemental magic, unicorns, and pegasi.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a book like this. The world seemed really interesting, and I liked the elemental magic. The world was beautifully written.
The book is told from three points of view: two humans and one horse. The characters were interesting, and I enjoyed the character development.
As a Finnish person, there were some familiar names for me, like the elemental spirits Tellervo and Ilmari.
I’m interested to see where the story goes next.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Receiving ARC didn’t affect my opinion of the book.
4.5 ⭐️ There was a lot to take in with this one at the beginning! So many names to remember (people, places, spirits, etc.). I encourage you to push through those first few chapters because once you settle in, this becomes a truly amazing ride!
Multi POV including that of a horse!
I had so many emotions throughout! At one point I had goosebumps. Seriously! Goosebumps! I can't recall the last book that has done that!
There was action, intrigue, scheming, twists and turns that made me draw a sharp breath each time! I felt so invested in this story. 😱
This book was unlike anything I've read in awhile, playing over in my mind like a epic movie!
Title: Night Sky Burning Author: H. A. Walker Genre/s: romantic epic fantasy My format: eBook 📱 #ARC Tropes: - multi POV (two MCs and one animal) - elemental/unique magic - pegasus/horses/unicorns - morally grey MMC - strong FMC - epic wilderness
This book was so flipping unique, and so captivating – I just loved it so much.
Each character is wonderfully developed (even the equine ones!) and the world politics have been very well thought about and created. The magic system was incredibly unique and so very interesting and the title quickly makes sense once you get into it. It was also cool to see some mythology I’d heard of previously with some of the names in this book (Finnish I believe?)
This book has the classic good vs evil that you expect from a good epic/high fantasy story, but the shades of grey did a wonderful job at keeping you guessing and engaged. There was just the right mix of longing, lost and found family, mystery/intrigue, romance, and gut wrenching emotions.
Someone else said the most perfect summary: ‘If you are looking for a book with the political intrigue of Game of Thrones, the heartbreak of The Last Unicorn, and the Witcher vibe, you have found your book.’
Night Sky Burning is by Western Aussie H.A. Walker and is her debut book. This book is for all those horse crazed people that wanted just a bit more out of your fantasy book.
Let me tell you H.A Walker does not dissapoint. We have horses, mountain horses, pegasi and unicorns 🦄😍 Multiple POVs which Im a sucker for AND one is from an animal 😯 an interesting magic system. Found family, love and loyalty between both humans and their animals, betrayal and forgiveness.
Destry is an amazing, strong willed, kickass FMC, who has had to deal with so much in her life with a past she doesnt really know. Asher is a mystery wrapped in a conundrum but I guess thats what we are supposed to think. Im looking forward to more of his story in book 2. Orrin is....well I love him. He is our Horse POV and is truly stepping up to who he was always meant to be.
The world building and plot is immensive and the banter H.A has written, not just with the humans but also the animals is amazing. I've always wished I could talk to a horse or fly on a pegasus or even see a unicorn and this book made me feel like I WAS Destry and the animals. She sucks you into this world and you never want to leave. It is low romance (for now) but it is a wicked fantasy debut from another up and coming Aussie author. Book 2 is expected early next year with book 3 near the end.
@h.a.walkerwrites thank you for letting me be an ARC and one of your Alpha readers. It is my absolute pleasure to spread the word and market the heck out of The Trinitor Chronicles. It is my top love that is not Romantasy 🤣
This book had me clutching it tightly to my chest when I had finished it. I have never read anything like it, and I found it so beautifully written. I loved the POV from Orrin the Mountain horse. Seeing the characters develop along the way throughout, the book was purely breathtaking. It had me wanting more and the cliffhanger at the end was perfect in every way. I cannot wait for the second one to come out. I’ll be the first in line for the pre-order.
Took me a bit to really commit to it with all the life stuff happening but I finally finished and it was a pretty good book. I would say 3.75/ 4 ⭐️for sure. Not like other books I’ve read but sure not in a bad way. I look forward to the next book.
DNF 23%. Not connecting to the characters. It not bad by any means but i feel some sections are way too descriptive which takes you away from the story and honestly makes things confusing on top of the 3 different pov/time line.
