The schema mod model aims to provide Borderline personality disorder patients with insight into their mode change and the reason for their change in behavior. According to Young, (the developer of Schema Therapy), everyone develops schemas during childhood. (Schema modes are organized into four categories: Child modes, coping modes, parent modes and the healthy adult mode.
). A schema is an organized structure of knowledge that develops in childhood and manifests itself through certain behaviors, feelings, and thoughts. A schema is not directly measurable, but can be measured by analyzing the patient's past life and observing their abilities and temperament. Young's theory is healthy schemas develop as the child's basic needs are met. The development of these schemas causes the child to create a positive impression of others, of themselves, and of the world. The child's basic needs; security, attachment to others, autonomy, self-confidence, self-expression, and realistic boundaries. Dysfunctional schemas and dysfunctional coping strategies emerge when these needs are not met, either because of deficiencies in the child's past or their combination with traumatic events. Disposition / temperament It can be one or both of familial factors or traumatic experiences. Dysfunctional schemas --> Dysfunctional coping strategies --> Complaints and problems. The author described 18 different schemas and coping strategies with these strategies. Otherwords; Schema Therapy is designed to address unmet needs and to help clients break these patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving, which are often tenacious, and to develop healthier alternatives to replace them. It is recommended.

Just finished reading the second edition. A thorough, practical and explanatory guide to treating BPD, especially for those new to this therapeutic approach. The chapters cover treatment rationale, case formulation, the therapeutic relationship (limited reparenting, empathic confrontation etc), a relatively detailed overview of the main experiential, cognitive and behavioral techniques applied in mode therapy, as well as specific methods utilized for specific modes. The book covers all phases of therapy. There’s also a limited discussion of other modalities, like group and couples therapy. Overall, quite a valuable tool, considering the dropout rates and difficulties presented in psychotherapy with borderline patients. Answers to frequently asked questions, at the end of each chapter, clarify the content in a nuanced and understandable manner. Recommended mostly to therapists trained in Schema Therapy. It won’t be fully comprehensible to the layperson, nor to the untrained professional. Most useful when accompanied by the “schema therapy step by step” videos (frequently referenced in the book, but not available with its purchase).

I can't really imagine taking seriously the described form of therapy. It seems very theatrical. The book provides the reader with important information about the borderline personality disorder but it focuses only on the extreme cases which seem to me to occur pretty rarely.
