January 2, 2024Con unas acuarelas fluidas y vibrantes, Maurane Mazars cuenta una historia bellísima y agridulce sobre lo que pasa cuando se consiguen los sueños y, al final, no resultan ser tan bonitos como se esperaba.
Uli es un joven estudiante de danza en una estricta escuela alemana que se siente absolutamente fascinado por la ligereza, la frivolidad y la alegría de los musicales estadounidenses que tanto contrastan con la rigidez del ballet en el que se ha criado. Cuando conoce a un bailarín afroamericano que ha trabajado en Broadway, por fin encuentra una excusa para dejarlo todo atrás y probar fortuna en la Gran Manzana. Pero, aunque cuando llega allí todo le va saliendo a pedir de boca, no termina de encontrar su lugar. Y es ahí cuando se plantea si ha hecho bien, si está en el sitio adecuado y si no está desperdiciando su vida.
Aunque ¡BAILA! podría haber sido «simplemente» una historia esperanzadora llena de danza, amoríos gays y fascinación juvenil por una vida de oropel, Mazars da un paso adelante y construye un retrato psicológico complejo que reflexiona magnifícamente sobre el concepto de frustración, éxito y fracaso. Y lo hace con unas ilustraciones fantásticas y con un protagonista que roba el corazón. Este es un cómic absolutamente hipnótico que he sido incapaz de soltar y que me ha enamorado por cómo la autora es capaz de plasmar, con palabras y dibujos, reflexiones psicológicas complejas, el ambiente cultural alternativo de finales de los años 50 y la luz, el movimiento y hasta la música del entorno en el que se mueve el inolvidable Uli.

je n'ai pas spécialement accroché à cette BD car il y avait du potentiel qui est pour moi, un peu passé à côté.
Prix révélation du festival d'Angoulème 2021. Il n'est pas volé, loin de là. J'aime beaucoup le graphisme, les couleurs, il y a un véritable charme opérant dans cet album grâce à tout ça.
Non, là où le bat blesse à mon avis, c'est sur l'histoire, un peu trop légère. Voire même qu'on ne comprend pas tout ce qui se passe. Il est vrai que j'ai un souci de la lisibilité dans certaines BD, celle-ci en fait un peu parti. Je ne peux pas admettre ne pas comprendre certaines cases, pages, ne pas comprendre les ellipses, si même il y en a. On dirait que le mecs à énormément d'aventures sans lendemain, à croire qu'à un moment donné c'est le sujet du livre. On le voit intéressé par la danse, mais il ne danse pas si souvent que cela. Le mouvement des scènes de danse est par contre assez bien rendu.
En fait, on doit un peu faire son idée de cette BD, on construit soi-même l'histoire avec les dessins proposés, faut voir ça ainsi, on est juste guidés, notre imagination fait le reste. Désolé, mais je pense que ça aurait pu, voire même ça aurait du aller plus loin. Ca m'embête de dire tout ça car on sent quand même le boulot, l'intention etc ..

RECENSIONE A CURA DI SLANIF
Ulrich “Uli” Rosenstiehl è un giovane ballerino che vive a Essen, in Germania, con la sua famiglia. Dopo la guerra (in quanto la storia è ambientata negli ultimi cinque anni della decade del 1950), che ha ferito profondamente non solo la sua famiglia ma lui stesso, lasciandogli strascichi che si manifestano sotto forma di incubi terribili, Uli concentra tutto il suo impegno e il suo tempo nella danza, sognando i Musical e Broadway. Nella scuola che frequenta, però, nessuno la vede così, perché in tutti è profondamente radicato un concetto ben diverso di “danza”, quindi dopo che a Berlino incontra il ballerino afroamericano Anthony Reed e se ne innamora, decide di seguirne il consiglio e di trasferirsi a New York City per fare carriera.

I really.. really really did not like this. It felt like a jumbled mess the ENTIRE time. The art left something to be desired. Even the speech bubble style bothered me. There were so many times (and this is a short story!!) that I found myself looking at pages and pages of meaningless drawings wondering WHY this was necessary to the story. Poorly structured throughout.
I appreciated the diversity included within the story and the couple comments about the struggle of dancers of different ethnicities and backgrounds..but quite literally nothing else appealed to me. Nothing. I'm super bummed about it.

Una piccola finestra sugli anni 50 e sulla bellezza della danza. Pregiudizi e traumi sono le pedine sulla scacchiera disegnata da Maurane Mazars. E a tal proposito, cento punti alle tavole: mettici l’acquerello e sono tuo automaticamente! Armoniche, delicate e familiari, le pennellate di Dance sono meravigliose, sul serio.

J'ai adoré le trait, les couleurs et l'ambiance de tout l'album. Les doubles pages sans textes sont magnifiques mais c'est malheureusement ce qui me fait tiquer. Le texte est trop souvent absent à mon goût, tout comme la danse.
On se perd un peu dans l'intention et la fin arrive très brusquement et rapidement.

Un style et une colorisation intéressants, mais l'ensemble me paraît quelquefois brouillon. Il y a beaucoup de sujets abordés qui s'entrecroisent et soulèvent des questions importantes, les thèmes sont forts, mais il manque un fil rouge plus puissant, une linéarité plus prenante. En l'occurrence, cette BD est davantage une suite de tranches de vie aux rapports poreux qu'une véritable histoire.

Read this graphic novel for the BSC readathon! I thought it was okay. I found out it was translated from French to English which is probably why it felt really choppy at times. It also jumped from scene to scene but in a way that made me feel like I skipped ahead by accident. I really loved the art style though!

Une BD intéressante sur le monde de la danse des années 50, mais aussi l’après-guerre et les révolutions culturelles. L’attachement au personnage principal vient toutefois tard dans l’œuvre puisqu’on tarde à nous présenter son intériorité.

En los últimos años me he ido aficionando a la novela ( seguramente por ciertas influencias familiares 😜) y , de vez en cuando, cuelo alguna entre lecturas más densas.
Ha sido bicheando en Ebiblio que me encontré con este libro, que me llamó la atención porque fue Obra Revelación en el Festival de Angoulême de 2021.
Esta fue la segunda obra de esta ilustradora francesa y su punto fuerte es precisamente ese: el dibujo.Colores, trazos y movimientos acompañan muy bien la narración formando un todo muy bien conjugado.
Respecto a la historia en sí, en líneas generales me ha gustado y creo que refleja muy bien ese mundo artístico de posguerra pero el argumento se me ha quedado un poco flojo
Aún así la considero una opción entretenida y disfrutable para leerse en un ratito😊

Una estrella entera extra por un dibujo espectacular que le va como anillo al dedo y que logra transmitir muchisimo. Lastima que el guión quede un poco flojo en comparación

Gros coup de cœur pour ce roman graphique magnifique, qui suit un jeune allemand - Uli - rêvant de danser dans une comédie musicale à New York à la fin des années 1950.
La force de Maurane Mazars c’est de réussite à retranscrire la danse de manière dynamique, tout en nous faisant passer l’énergie, la fatigue et les frustrations du danseur.

A good graphic novel about war, german trauma and dance but also a lot more social topics that I would have liked to be more detailed but I guess there was not enough space in this book. Still, it was nice

Ho preso questa graphic novel in prestito in biblioteca un po’ a scatola chiusa perché mi ispirava, purtroppo però non mi ha convinta.
Il protagonista è Uli, un ragazzo tedesco che sogna di fare il ballerino e che si trova a partire per New York. Qui lo vediamo alle prese con la vita newyorkese, tra tanti ragazzi che cercano di tentare la fortuna e diventare dei ballerini. Viviamo la sua quotidianità, sia per quanto riguarda il ballo che la sua vita personale e amorosa. Vengono trattati temi importanti come quello dell’orientamento sessuale e del razzismo.
Purtroppo lo stile dell’autrice non mi ha fatto impazzire: non mi sono piaciuti ne i colori usati ne lo stile dei disegni. I colori li ho trovati poco naturali, molto carichi e non mi hanno dato una bella visione collettiva. Lo stile invece non mi ha fatto impazzire principalmente per come l’autrice illustra le figure, anche queste poco naturali e un po’ troppo squadrate.
Il tema trattato poteva anche essere interessante, ma purtroppo non mi è piaciuto come è stato affrontato. Nell’affrontare le situazioni quotidiane forze li ho visti trattati un po’ con superficialità, o comunque non con la giusta attenzione.

Mi aspettavo un fumetto che celebrasse la danza, invece mi sono trovato di fronte a una critica del mondo della danza degli anni ‘50. Pensavo anche che la trama avrebbe visto come protagonista un ragazzo che non era ancora consapevole della propria sessualità. Mi ero insomma fatto delle aspettative dal nulla 🤦🏻♂️. Nonostante ciò il fumetto mi è piaciuto molto. Piuttosto che concentrarsi sulla propria ricerca sessuale, il protagonista si concentra sulla ricerca della sua strada e del suo spazio. La realtà è che lui sa dall’inizio della storia chi è, e vorrebbe esprimerlo con la danza, ma da un lato c’è Essen e l’accademia fin troppo impostate sulla tecnica, dall’altro lato Broadway si rivela artificiosa e fasulla. Mi è piaciuto come tutto si sia ricollegato a Off Broadway di cui non sapevo nulla, è stato interessante approfondire. Nella miriade di cose trattate belli anche i personaggi secondari, a partire da Patty e dal suo spettacolo fin troppo scomodo per gli standard di Broadway e Anthony che sente il peso delle sue origini, si muove in un contesto bianco e nonostante la sua storia sia simile a quella di Uli non riesce a fidarsi di lui completamente.

I absolutely loved the artwork in this graphic novel! It was quite stylized, but it really added to the story. On its own, I think the story falls a little flat, but I think it worked well setting up the conflicts in the second volume. If you decide to check this out, I recommend thinking of this as "act 1" and the second volume as "act 2."
Oops! I actually read this as two separate volumes on hoopla, but it looks like this Goodreads edition is both volumes together. So I am just going to add my thoughts for the second half/ part 2 here.

una lectura rapida pa alejarme del puto imperio del vampiro. es un comic super bonito visualmente, con unos dibujos preciosos y con un estilo muy particular. a nivel argumentativo es de perseguir los sueños y tal (especialmente en el mundo del baile, donde se ambienta) y bueno, no se si es q no soy muy de leer comics o que no me llegan igual, pero me lo he leido muy rapido y siento q no he absorbido mucho de su mensaje. aunqur igual es cosa mia. eso si, lo q me ha hecho es tener muchas ganas de mudarme a otra ciudad y rodearme de amigues artistas que se quieren hacer un hueco en el panorama actual. de no vivir mi vida, vamos.

Se idealiza mucho el modo de vida neoyorquino y creo que deja muy en segundo o tercer término las cuestiones sociales como el racismo y la homofobia de la época, ya que plateando diferentes localizaciones siempre se tiene casi la misma concepción. Por lo demás está bien.

È incredibile, ma Dance! affronta davvero di tutto. La difficoltà di fare arte, il razzismo, le ferite della guerra, l'omofobia. Eppure, per molti di questi temi, devi guardare con attenzione per renderti conto di cosa si sta parlando. Tutto fluisce nel discorso, nelle tavole, come fosse, davvero, solo una danza, che inizia alla prima pagina e trascina fino alla fine, fino all'epilogo della storia dei personaggi, quando la vita non è più una lotta ma una solida normalità.
È un inno all'arte del ballo, alla voglia di esprimersi e all'incapacità di farlo che spinge i personaggi a provare a trovare un posto nel mondo che sia per loro.

Tanz!, set in the '50s, introduces a young, LGBTQ+ German dancer who moves to New York to pursue a dream of dancing in a Broadway musical.
I'll be honest, I didn't get much out of this story, maybe because I know next to nothing about dance so the countless conversations throughout about different types of dance and what's seen as highbrow etc. kind of went over my head. This is also just part 1 of the story so there isn't much in the way of plot and development, so maybe I'd enjoy it more if I read further issues.
Nevertheless, I did like the art style. It's quite different to stuff that I've come across before and other graphic novels that I've read. I like how the artist uses quite a rough and sketchy kind of style, where the forms and colours often blend into each other – I felt like that worked really well with the subject matter being about dance and movement.
This was a really quick read, so I don't regret picking it up, and I'm sure this is a graphic novel that others would really enjoy if they're into dance, particularly dance in the '50s.

A graphic novel that manages to be both intense and somehow educational. However, I feel like this graphic novel could have said more.
Visually, Tanz! is beautiful: the way colors splash on the page immerge you in the story. AS for the subjects it tackles, it's ambitious: life post-WWII, racism, elitism, sexism. Tanz! raises many questions but does not take the time to efficiently explains how they all merge and interconnect. The reader merely catches a glimpse of the way they they have consequences on the characters's lives. Moreover, I felt like Anthony would have made a better main character because he had a lot to bring to the story and the social discourse.
There's obviously a multitude hidden behind those pages, I just feel like it wasn't made available to everyone.

It’s really interesting to see how flawed Uli is and yet how likeable he remains, and how for so long he’s so caught up pursuing his own happiness that he fails to recognise the struggles of those around him and the ways in which he benefits from the very systems that keep his friends and loved ones from being as successful as he is (like race and gender). Great read, I really enjoyed seeing these glimpses of the German and American post WW2 queer scenes... though I must say it does feel a bit stereotypical at times with the portrayal of queer relationships...

Je suis assez partagée sur ce livre. Il aborde des sujets importants, l'après guerre, l'homosexualité, le racisme... Mais on reste en surface. L'histoire passe très vite et on a du mal à suivre nombre de fois.
Les dessins et particulièrement les couleurs sont beaux et nous transportent. Les expressions des personnages sont bien magnifiquement représentées.
Je ne sais pas trop quoi penser de ce livre de manière générale.

J’ai tout simplement adoré. Une explosion de couleurs et de corps, avec (et c’est souvent un point qui me manque dans les bande-dessinées) une vraie profondeur dans le personnage principal. La BD est tellement épaisse qu’on s’attache très vite à Uli, et j’ai adoré toutes ces réflexions amenées finement sur la danse, les comédies musicales, les sentiments « nobles » et d’autres vus comme « triviaux ». En bref: je veux déjà la relire.

Mai 2021. Disons un 3,5/5. Beaucoup de beaux sujets qui restent malgré tout en surface. Les dessins esquissés rappelaient l’énergie de la danse, il y avait une belle cohésion de ce côté à transmettre cette énergie. Ça m’a plu, mais j’aurais voulu plus de profondeur. Uli est franchement un super personnage.
