Torin has seen off several threats against him and his burgeoning faction the Shattered Storm.
However, time is ticking down on the primary quest from his patron, the Shattered Goddess. He promised to utterly destroy Luca Gattosi before a year had passed. Months have gone by and he is no closer to taking his rival down. In fact, the opposite is true. Luca has only grown stronger. The window of opportunity to act is getting smaller with every day.
But things are not so simple that Torin can switch his focus whenever he wishes.
He remains embroiled in a war in the northern peninsula against the Hooved Horde. A group of ravenous flesh-eating beastmen. Not to mention, the threat which lurks beneath the placid waters of the Great Lakes. The twisted Hector and his abominable spawn.
If that wasn't enough to contend with, there is also the human politics. Governor William Reed of Wisconsin who has allied himself with the same sea-god that transformed Hector into a horrific champion of pain and suffering. He is out for blood against his hated rival Governor Richard Reynolds of Michigan. Torin's somewhat unreliable ally.
Stormblade Harbour, the home of Torin and his growing stable of friends and lovers, stands between the two of them which makes it a target.
But this is the Darkwyrlds, life is not supposed to be easy. It's supposed to be hard and only those willing to risk everything get the chance to win it all.
(Trigger warning. This series contains an anti-villain protagonist who often chooses to take advantage of situations rather than fighting for what most would consider right.)
This is kinda hard to write since I really liked to first 2 books but a lot of the story just fell apart for me in this one. I feel that the first books really spent a lot of time setting up and foreshadowing major events for the MC to deal with but then all those events happened in the same book and none were very satisfying. The author just kept piling one enemy after another but instead of having a to a satisfying conclusion for each one their just mashed together and don't feel all that impactful. Yet the story continues to build up even more future events before any of the current one's are resolved. the whole thing just feels like a lot of build up with no payoff.
The final straw for me was when the MC was going after the next harem girl Claudia. Since the first book it was built up that the big conflict with Claudia's brother would be a spiritual battle of wills to break Claudia's bond with her brother. However, when the battle finally started it just felt half-assed with a boring cheat ending filled with deus ex machina. It was just the MC role playing as a 1920's gangster playing a mini game side quest. Hell the brother basically just throws the whole contest away just to get the big evil god of the universe to bail him out in the end. The whole thing feels like a meaningless waste of time. If you are going to spend so much time building up to an epic show down then you really need to stick that landing because whatever that was was not it. When your story beats end on such lackluster moments it just makes me feel like I'm wasting my time and make everything I liked before this feel empty. I hope that the writing gets better in the rest of the series for everyone else but I'll never know since I can't bring myself to even care enough to finish the last 4th of this book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The author didn’t let even one plot-string play out in a sequitur manner. No story event played along in a logical sequence without the interruption of some divine being.
Why should I even care about the challenges the Mc faces and the level-ups he gets, if it’s practically granted that the author is gonna force plot in a different direction last minute. First the enemy gets an unfair advantage and power boost - then Torin gets some ridiculous plot armor to eke out a victory. The same muster again and again and again…. Its uncreative and repetitive, as well as very disruptive for the natural flow of the story. It takes all the fun out of reading a fight/challenge if you already know that something is gonna happen towards the end of it, that will render it practically meaningless.
Spoiler/Example: The spiritual contest between Torin and Luca for Claudias bond and aptitude is the best example. The contest was to determine wether Claudia would be abble to seperate her bond to Luca in exchange for one to Torin and take back her aptitude to finally choose a good class. In the end, nobody won or lost the duell, the bond was severed because some divine intervention, and all rules about aptitude and requirements for classes were ignored because the author wanted Claudia in a specific class. Thats not good writing.
The same nonsense happened in the real fight against Luca. I skipped the complete attack on Luca fortress because I anticipated it to become meaningless, due to some last minute twist. For something unfair to happen, only for Torins plotarmor to kick in. My prediction was not wrong. Saddly. The author completely messed up book 3. The contest between Luca and Torin - somehhing build up since book 1 - got drowned in divine interventions, plottwists and exceptions to the established rules.
Carter is still the hand wringing moral worrier he was in the first book. It might be over, but I’ve been disappointed before and it’s so tiresome. I don’t want him to go full psychopath but the fence sitting is atrocious.
I think this is a 5 book series, which means the best we’ll get is a proper MC for 2 books…. So disappointed.
Still the writing is good on a technical level, the characters are enjoyable, it’s one of the better series I’ve found on KU.
Was already a fan of this author so was an easy thought to check out his new series. And it does not disappoint at all. Great MC, great fleshed out harem members and a very well written story equals a gem of a book. Really can’t wait for book 4 and hope to read a lot more in this excellent series.
The book is too slow Book is too long it is nowhere near As good as the 1st book not even close to the second either. It's almost like the writers get bored with their work and just drool on like atomatons.
It started out interesting but became a real chore to read, every few chapters there's a new twist or complication and nothing feels like it's being done.
