This book explores the many benefits of being bilingual while also addressing some of the potential downsides, though I feel it doesn’t provide definitive answers on the topic. Much of the content overlaps with ideas found in The Language Instinct, so it feels somewhat repetitive since I read that book before.
It does offer a range of case studies and some general strategies. However, if you’re looking for a straightforward, step-by-step guide to raising a bilingual child, this book might not be the best fit. Its focus leans more toward the science behind language learning rather than hands-on advice.
Fairly interesting, with some useful advice. My wife and I are planning to raise our son Bilingual as a minimum, so it made sense to get some input.
It isn't tremendously detailed. As all children are unique, and the combination of languages will very different for each reader, I suppose they had to keep things general to increase applicability.
They are keen to reassure nervous parents, and often state that it is never too late, and that there isn't really any wrong way to do it, which does rather negate the necessity for a guide in the first place! I found later sections about literacy more useful than the earlier stages, although they won't be relevant for us any time soon!
