Adolescence is recognised as a turbulent period of human development. Along with the physical changes of puberty, adolescents undergo significant transformations in the way they think, act, feel and perceive the world. The disruption that is manifest in their behaviour is upsetting and often incomprehensible to the adults surrounding them. In The Adolescent Psyche Richard Frankel shows how this unique stage of human development expresses through its traumas and fantasies the adolescent's urge towards self-realization. The impact of contemporary culture on the lives of young people has resulted in an increasing number of adolescents being referred for psychotherapy and psychiatric treatment. Successful outcomes are often difficult to achieve in clinical work with clients of this age-group. The advice and guidelines which Frankel provides will be welcomed by psychotherapists, parents, educators and anyone working with adolescents.
This is, hands down, one of the best books on psychotherapy and psychology I've ever read! I wish all graduate programs made us read this rather than memorizing any diagnostic manual.
Jung and Winnicott--two of my favorite psychoanalysts--and the application of their work to adolescents. Jung mostly focused on adult development but the idea of using the archetypes to shape one's work with teens is intriguing. Winnicott, of course, is known for his sensitive and beautiful explorations of object relations and attachment in young children--transitional object, good-enough mother. I should really read this again!
I don't work psycho dynamically but I found this book thought provoking and useful to help me with my thinking about the adolescent years. Because it uses psycho dynamic language it was a bit of a task as I had to keep looking up words but I recommend this read to any one who works with adolescents or is raising them! I wish I had read it when my kids were younger but maybe the learning can help me relate better to my grand children :-)
This is a must have book for those working within child and adolescent psychotherapy, expressive arts therapies and counselling for young adults. I found it really helpful!
