Fae Devils #1

Castle of Nevers and Nightmares: A Fae Devils Novel

Rate this book
When winter comes to the Court of Dreams, the war against the Subterranean of Nightmares freezes. To celebrate, the faerie queen holds a tournament where mortals compete for the prize of a dream come true. For outsider Willow Nightstalk, it’s the only way to break the curse making her as ugly as she feels. But the deadly tournament has a darker purpose—to flush out flawed mortal blights on the perfectly pretty fae society… and to kill them. Any left alive are conscripted when war returns in spring. When the coveted prize can give you anything your heart desires, allies are likelier to stab you in your sleep than save you.Surviving means securing the highly contested patronage of the powerful fae nobility. But when the notoriously recluse House of Shadow is the only option left, the odds are stacked against her. Especially since it’s led by the six beautiful fae boogeymen who rejected her, robbed her of magic, and ruined her life. She would rather let terrors drag her to the beneath. But then the unthinkable happens. For the first time in years, the House of Shadow chooses a protégé. Her. Forced to live in their rundown castle, Willow starts uncovering secrets about the war, the oppressive queen, and the tragedy behind the Six’s forbidden obsession that left her broken. Soon, she doesn’t know who to trust, blame, or befriend. What’s worse is that sabotage is in the air, and bodies start dropping like flies. Safety means choosing between trusting her eyes or her battered heart. But if she chooses wrong, no dreams will come true—she’ll be dead. Nothing is as it seems in the Court of Dreams, least of all the Nightmares. Castle of Nevers and Nightmares is a slow-burn, spicy “why choose” dystopian-fantasy romance novel where the underdog heroine finds her inner power, the tension is hot, and the world-building is full of intrigue. It’s the first in the Fae Devils series, a Fae Guardians spinoff. Reading the Fae Guardians is unnecessary to enjoy this story, but it can enhance your reading experience as these characters have a past. It is recommended for mature readers due to language, violence, horror, and explicit sexual and dark situations.

"There's something about you, Willow O'leary Nightstalk, something disruptive and magnetic. You're smart, ruthless, and yet full of compassion for strangers. You are a natural-born queen, with or without magic, with or without a hive. If this all turns to ruin, and all we're left with is the pleasure of your company for this single heartbeat in time, I will consider myself fortunate."

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to write an intelligible review right now because after that cliffhanger and the mess of emotions, I'm just... I'm in my feels, y'all, and I am not okay right now.

Castle of Nevers and Nightmares feels like the book-embodiment of Willow as a character - wild, chaotic, full of rage and grief and contradictions and a desperation to feel not just safe, but seen. Our girl has been through so much since she was captured by Nero and groomed into a killing machine. And while she may be free from his grip now, the scars of that trauma remain; and to add insult to injury, after losing her magic, she feels like she's lost who she is as a person as well.

Willow grapples with a lot of self-doubt and even instances of harrowing self-loathing in this book, only exacerbated by a tremendous loss that she feels personally responsible for, a perceived rejection by the only creatures in existence that ever made her feel seen - even if it was just for a fleeting moment in the middle of a battlefield before everything went to shit... and then on top of all of that, she has to grapple with a curse that was placed on her by the malevolent Titania and the vicious cruelty of the Radiants that surround her.

I'm not going to lie, it hurts to see Willow continue to hurt and suffer - especially after literally everything she was already forced to endure as a child. My girl needs a goddamned break, but the powers that be clearly have other plans for her.

Her journey into Avorlorna begins with a misguided but totally understandable thirst for revenge, but graduates into a transformative experience full of self-actualization and enough tastes of unconditional love to leave her craving more.

Willow's chemistry with Fox - the only member of the Six that still remembers who she is (long story - it'll make sense when you read the book) - is froth with tension, misunderstandings, bruised feelings, and intense passion. But the way Lana captures Fox and the way he and the rest of the Sluagh interact, while I absolutely adored the quality bonding time he got with Willow, it always felt like something was missing... and that something is the other five of the Six. And what's great is Lana never even really has to explicitly spell that out - those missing puzzle pieces and the yawning ache left in their absence is threaded throughout the book, even when Willow is sharing the same space as the others.

The political machinations in this book are frustrating as hell (in a good way). You have your typical classism, baseless cruelty of the masses, and wounded egos of small, insecure "Radiants" that cause more trouble for our protagonists (as intended, so at least their characters are "doing their job" in the conflict department. You can't help but love to hate them). The main conflict at hand - namely Titania and the hold she has on the Sluagh (and a few other things that nasty piece of work is directly responsible for) - gets under the skin right from the jump. Woman is barely in this book as far as page time goes, but her presence is felt throughout and like with her irritating acolytes, there's a kind of relish in just how much one comes to hate her.

Literally, the existence of this woman and her cronies and how I feel about them can be summed up in that one scene from one of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, where Captain Jack Sparrow is screaming "stop blowing holes in my ship!" Seriously, that was me throughout most of this book. I want Willow to be happy. I want the Sluagh to be happy. I want them to be happy together. I want it so much, it hurts. I mean, ffs they've earned it after everything they've had to endure. But noooooooooo - these infuriating villains keep getting in the way.

But that's what effective antagonists do, I suppose.

I should warn any and all prospective readers: this book ends on a cliffhanger. I am borderline feral at this point for answers and resolutions, I need that next book like I need air. I need Willow to get her powers back from Titania. I need Fox to not be a stone statue, and for the other five to remember who she is. I need the seals on the Sluagh broken and Titania and her cronies flayed alive for all of the cruelty they've doled out. I need goddamned justice for my girl, Willow, because she fucking deserves the world and I am just as tired as she is by how everyone around her manipulates, uses, and discards her. I'm ready for some fiery, bloody vengeance and I can't fucking wait.

Some non-spoilery things of note that I loved:

Baby Wild Hunt the dragon. Oh my god, I cannot with that thing, it is so damn cute. And its bond to Willow makes a certain tragedy at the start of the book a bit easier to bear.

Willow's arc (which is obviously not complete) - so far, I'm loving what Lana has given us. Willow has a lot of unprocessed emotions, baggage, trauma, grief, rage, and just all of the things that she hasn't quite dealt with, and seeing her hurt made me hurt, but watching her grow and adapt, but also the way she started to thrive a bit toward the end... I can't wait for more of that. I absolutely love her character. I crave her happiness so much, it's like a physical ache in my chest.

I know I mentioned Fox already, but I really did love him. That poor guy is carrying the weight of the world (or rather, the entire hive) on his shoulders, and you can tell that the man/demon is exhausted and nearly out of hope. But the way Willow rekindles that in him makes my heart hurt - especially considering those final chapters. The writing was on the wall with him, but I was in denial the whole time.

Legion still fascinates me to no end and I am *DYING* for more of him. Bodin is swoon-worthy AF, Varen's makes him all the more endearing, and Emrys... guy is terrifying as hell, but also, I am totally into it? We don't get much of Styx because spoilery reasons, but I am SO FREAKING READY to see more of the Six in action. I need that next book like I need air.

Lastly, mama Clarke. We get a bit of her at the start, and what we did get made my heart hurt. I cannot imagine the weight that woman has to carry - the premonitions and foresight, having to surrender to fate and trust that things will work out... especially when it means letting go of the ones you love when all you want to do is hold on tight. I know all of that is cryptic, but it'll make sense once you read it. Let's just say that those beginning chapters left me in tears, and I wanted to wrap both Willow and Clarke in a blanket and just protect them from the rest of the world. Mom and daughter deserve so much, and out of everyone, it really does feel like they've sacrificed the most at times.

TL;DR / Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book. It is emotionally heavy, the romance is a genuine slow-burn (if anything, the romance takes a backseat for much of the book), and there's so many layers and complexities to the story Lana weaves here - it really isn't like any of the other Fae Guardians books she's written thus far. Castle of Nevers and Nightmares was worth the wait... and now I need book 2 ASAP.

Nothings don't have names.

You're such a pathetic, disgusting waste of space.

My fist tightens. Pain radiates up my palm. Blood drips onto the dirt.

You belong with the other nightmares. It's high time your realm acknowledges that, too. When you rise on the morrow, your visage will mirror the ugliness lurking within your hearth.

Titania's voice fills me with hot, trembling rage. She doesn't know my heart better than me. I am the only one who holds that power. I control my destiny, my choices, my fate. She might have stolen my magic and left me empty, but I am not nothing.

I'm something.

Time to let it out. Time to let it all go. I refuse to let my life end like Rory's, filled with a never-ending vendetta. I want it to end like Tinger's, in service to those I love. Taking a deep breath, I scream. I let it go. My rage, my fear, my insecurities. I scream until my throat is hoarse, and then I scream some more.

"I'M NOT NOTHING!"

I was something to Tinger. I am something to my family. I am something to my friends. I am something to the Six.

Me: *cries forever*

This is my first time reading a book with the why choose trope and I was pleasantly surprised that I didn’t completely hate the trope. I was always afraid that it would feel too much like a love triangle, but the author did a great job of making it clear that the FMC Willow and the Six are all connected and mates to each other.

The biggest reason this book is just a three star read for me is because I had so much trouble getting into the story. There was just so much information being thrown at me. I know this is supposed to help new readers who have not read the original series, but it was still a lot and I’ve actually read the original series. All the terms that we learned in the original series get swapped for new ones and that just confused me even more.

Because a lot of time was spent introducing us to Alvorna, the romance doesn’t kick in until the second half of the book, which was kind of annoying. I have always preferred the author’s books when she focuses more on the romance rather than the plot as I believe that is where her strengths lie. And so, to have CONAN be a plot heavy book dimmed my enjoyment a bit. I really would have liked getting to know the Six better rather than all these new words and phrases that Alvorna had. The story just really dragged at times with all this world-building.

The author has mentioned that the series will rotate the male leads so that we get to know all of them, and so I am excited to see Willow deepening her relationships with each of the Six. The MMC of this first book, Fox, was a good lead to start the series with, but I just didn’t find him as intriguing as the other Sluagh. Varen and Emerys were probably the most interesting to me.

All in all, not much happens in this book and it honestly felt like a setup for the rest of the series. However, while I didn’t love this book, I still plan on continuing this series and I’m looking forward to seeing the different dynamics between Willow and the Six.

Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Woah. Just woah.

I absolutely devoured this book. I will say that I didn't have a clue what I was getting into! 😅 I saw the author's name and I saw this cover and I raised my hand.

I quickly learned it was actually the next generation (kinda) of the Fae Guardian series. Featuring the feisty daughter of Rush and Clarke, Willow. I also learned it was a Why Choose with her and the Hive, AKA, the Sluagh, we have seen and feared before. While I do think that reading that series first is beneficial, there were enough explanations peppered in to keep a newbie engaged.

There is a whole new Kingdom we visit and a whole new cast of side characters. There is a magical tournament, rivalries, and duels. It really was so exciting.

But at the heart of it is the romance. A Romance that Willow wants nothing to do with. She's been told she is the Hive's fated Queen, but she's been betrayed by them once, five years ago, and revenge is all she wants.

Fox, the fifth, is desperate to save his Hive and return their memories AND bring Willow to them as she should be. The poor Sluagh has his work cut out for him. There are curses every which way and enemies all around, plus, as mentioned, Willow wants then all dead. He's on his own at the start, and it's hard to see.

The one thing he has on his side is that Willow has always been drawn to her fated. Even though she doesn't have the Mating marks you'd expect, she can't deny the connection. And the SWOON the male brings to the table... hot damn! ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

I had a great time with this story, and the twists and turns kept me flipping pages. The only devastating part was THAT ENDING! And the next book isn't coming til August! Good lord!

I do think it is best served if you've at least read The Longing of Lone Wolves, but again, if you want to start fresh with this series... I think you're all good.

I will be on the edge of my seat til the next one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

If you love morally grey shadow daddies then this book is for you!

Willow is on a quest for revenge against the spiteful queen that cursed her (to be ugly) and the men who abandoned her. Kidnapped as a child and trained as a weapon Willow raised an army of the undead and as a result lost all her magic. You’ll recognize Willow if you’ve read the Fae Guardian series! —But even if you haven’t read the FG series you can still enjoy this book!

This book is Fourth Wing meets Howl’s Moving Castle and the ending will leave you starving for more!

The Shadow Daddies:

Legion —The leader of the group. I would very much like to run my fingers through his long dark hair. He makes me want to listen to Hozier and cry into a pillow

Bodin —a Grumpy that just needs a hug and maybe a stab with a sword. I would climb this man like a tree

Emrys —the kinky one. He loves pain. I would fold like a piece of paper for this man

Varen —a sweet summer child who loves making bee analogies 😭 — If harm comes to this soft boy of darkness I will be calling my lawyer

Fox — our featured MMC in this book. This man with his flashy skull, wings, horns and tail will destroy your panties. He’s a bathtub cuddler who loves nothing more than burning down the house of those who stole from his true queen and ripping out the hearts of those who harm her.

Styx — this blue skin statue of a man is missing for most of the book which means I should fear for my life when book 2 comes out

This book also features an absolutely adorable baby dragon that gives Toothless vibes 👁️👅👁️

My new requirement for reading a book… is that the female main character has to have at LEAST… six devilishly smexual love interests who are nothing less than OBSESSED with her.

This book has consumed me. I was in a trance. Completely lost to the real world.

The book is called Castles Of Nevers and Nightmares by Lana Pecherczyk (Pe - her - chick)

This is a standalone series called The Fae Devils. It’s a spinoff from The Fae Guardian series.

Lana has said it’s unnecessary to read any of her other work to enjoy this series. However, it could enhance your reading experience, as these characters do have a past in her other books…

My experience with this book is going in brand new, as this is my first book written by Lana. And.... All I can say is that it won’t be my last.

I didn’t know this was a why choose going into it until six menacing, wild, delicious men came waltzing onto the page. And I said… oh snap. Here we go.

This book follows Willow. She is a wolf shifter but she’s been cursed. Her magic is missing, and she also has been cursed to be ugly. As ugly as her insides…

She’s on the path for revenge to take down an evil queen, and The Six who abandoned her. She ends up taking a portal to a new world to enact her revenge, and instead finds herself thrust into a tournament that’s life or death.

This is a brand new fantasy series. We’re introduced to a new world. The info dump. The world building. Is heavy. It’s strong. It’s a lot. The best advice I can give for you to enjoy this story is… just begin. Sit back and give it time to unfold. Don’t feel pressured to retain all information right off the bat. I promise you won’t be disappointed. This story goes places I could never have imagined. I. Am. Hooked.

So many truths unfold during this story. I could not put this book down. Sleep was a sacrifice I was willing to make in order to stay in this world as long as possible.

I’m obsessed with The Six. I’m feral for them. I need to take an ice plunge to even attempt to calm down how I feel about them. Their names are Legion, Bodin, Emrys, Varen, Fox, and Styx. Don’t even ask me which one is my favorite because it changes every 5 seconds. They are individuals but they also have a hive mind so they are all deeply connected… however even their connection is at stake and that’s a really cool story line in this book.

I think each book in this series is going to focus more on each of the wraiths/shadow daddies and I don’t know if my heart or brain can take it. I feel like I’m going to malfunction I’m so captivated. By this world. By all of the characters, both main and secondary. The magic. The history. The lore of this world. The war that is currently raging on. It’s all so much and it’s incredible.

The Six are keepers of the Wild Hunt - the horde of the wicked souls they punish. They belong to The House Of Shadows. They’re so hot. They’re so sweet. And so dangerous. And so vulnerable. Like... help. I need help. I can’t. Get over them.

There’s a quote… “being our queen means you’re ours, but we’re also yours. ALL of us. We’ll bow to you, obey, worship, pleasure, feed, and protect you with our eternal lives. We’ll exist for you and only for you because you are our skin. Without you we fall apart”
WHAT?!??!?!?

This book deals with fitting in a socially acceptable box. Beauty standards. Moving on from grief. Trusting others. Overcoming and managing trauma.

There’s a baby dragon that’s so cute and so naughty. I love him with my whole heart. The entire book could have just been following around this adorable baby and I would have still given it 5 stars.

This entire books commands your attention. You are totally at it’s will and mercy and that’s exactly the type of fantasy book I love to read.

There’s a quote… “oblivion was all we ever desired until you”
Swoon. Pass out.

Learn to let go. Surrender. Stop carrying the pain. Be the cure.

Some books will stick with you forever. This is one of those books. I have a fierce obsession with this series and author, and I can’t wait to continue reading her books.

This book - this story, did not pass me by, and I’m forever grateful. What’s meant for you truly will always find you. And perhaps, the reason why you’re seeing this, is because this story did not pass you by either.

...I don't know how to feel right now???

On one hand I loved the characters but on the other hand I feel like literally nothing happened this entire book. Our main character comes in with just an encyclopedia of issues and none of them are solved at the end. So I was kind of like...why am I here 🧍‍♀️

This book was good. I will definitely be reading the next book once it comes out! I just had a feeeew thoughts on this, but I'd still recommend this to anyone with a few things to keep in mind.

Things to keep in mind before reading:
There is a loooot of world building in the beginning that honestly makes you completely question what is up and down. Nothing makes sense. The story building was a lot and by the end of the book I was kinda still confused what was going on lol. I think at one point I was on page 150 and felt like the book was moving really slow due to the information overload. Pacing was slow in the beginning, but then kinda moved a lil too fast in some other parts of the book.

However, the last half of the book did keep me hooked and I couldn't put the book back down!

Now my thoughts on everything else -

I loooved the Slaugh and if we do not get more of the gossip in the kitchen, I will be so mad because I can see her easily being one of my favorites. The Slaugh all had their own different personalities (which is great and not always the case in a why choose)! I'm really looking forward to seeing and getting to know more of the other Slaugh other than Fox. BUT DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVED OUR PLAYFUL BOY FOX TOO!!

However, I could not get on board with the FMC, Willow, for awhile lol. We saw some character growth towards the end, but she was honestly so annoying to me throughout most of the book. She spends most of the book blaming everything that happened in her life on the Slaugh and made them into her enemies in her mind which felt just didn't sit right with me. Her personality just seemed very... young.

In the end, I still can't wait to see how the story goes and will definitely be picking up book 2 once it's out!

this would be a 4 if it didn't rely so heavily on the reader reading the previous series in it's entirety. I'm of the opinion that book #1, even if it's a spinoff, should stand on its own and this doesn't. half the time I was frustratingly confused. the other half I loved. lana has crafted a very interesting and inteicate world here but this book does nothing to explain it. you simply have to read the fae guardians series to get it.

good characters, interesting plot dynamics and a good ending.

To be honest, I have no idea what I just read. The story of a scarred girl (continuously called ugly) who is part wolf and was magically until the group of devils took her powers for the queen and then the queen wipes their memory of doing it. The MC then choses to do a tournament, gets selected as a favorite where the devils treat her like a queen, but also want to sacrifice her to save another member. The story starts off with her hating the Devil they call Fox, then slowly they turn into lovers, but then the rest of the devils want their turn. Fox takes her virginity. She only has a relationship with Fox, but the book amps it up for the next book which I am guessing she will explore more options of poly within the group (Hive). The two MCs get to the garden where the devil member has turned into stone. Fox switches himself for Styx's place and the book ends there.

It wasn't good, but wasn't bad. There wasn't a lot of background or foundation layed like in normal books. However, there wasn't a lot happening besides a party in the woods. Romance scenes OK, but nothing special.

This can be read as a standalone series or as a companion to her Fae Guardian series. It starts off a little bit with an info-dump to get you caught up with the lore, magic system, etc., but if you are reading this world for the first time, I think that it is just the right amount of knowledge to get you familiar with the characters that make up the story.

I loved how gritty this story was. Willow took on a lot more masculine-typical character traits that you normally see in a MMC and I loved the roll reversal that I saw trending while her still straddling her femininity.

Absolutely loved how Fox was a MMC that encompassed both fragility and strength, which is something I feel like I don't see often in the romantasy genre from male characters. Lana really did his character justice.

While we really don't dive into the "why-choose" part of the romance yet, I feel that Lana P. Is going a lot of great set up for it to come in the next book. It's like we get the "insta-love" and the slow burn tropes all at the same time and I love that I get a little bit of both.

I…am torn on this one. I was looking forward to Willow going out and finding her 6 and reclaiming her life and their bond. I didn’t picture it happening like this.

The story picks up 5 years in the future from the last Fae Guardian series, and the beginning was a SLOG. While a spinoff, there is very little in common once Willow goes through the portal. There is a ton of time spent trying to rebuild the world the author already created because this is like a different dimension or something, they have different words, a different hierarchy, and a crap ton of rules the FMC knows nothing about (and doesn’t learn about). By the time I felt like anything was even HAPPENING, the book was done.

I really enjoyed the fae guardian series so of course I was excited for this series.

It did not disappoint!

One of the things I appreciate about this series is the fantasy and world building. Often times romantasy is more about the romance and the fantasy side suffers.

Can’t wait for the second book!!

I received the eARC for Castle of Nevers and Nightmares. This was the first book I have read by Lana, and I can not wait to dive into her others!
This series is a part of the same world as her Gardian Fae series, I feel like if you've read those series, it may make it easier to understand. I personally have not read them, so there were some parts, mostly in the beginning, where it was a tad confusing.
But you don't HAVE to read those other books in order to read this one.

As I was reading this, several books came to mind. A Court Of Thorns and Roses, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Throne of Glass.
This gave me all those vibes!
Enemies to lovers, curses, evil queens, magic, dragons, and tournaments.

The world building was great, though I found it a little confusing in the beginning. But after Willow ended up in the Court of Dreams, it got easier for me to follow.

There were several scenes that had me laughing out loud. Which I haven't done in such a long time! The banter between the two main characters I found so enjoyable as well as several characters throughout the book had me rolling.

The spice!!! Swoon worthy!!!! True slow burn, which is my favorite! Tension building and oh so delicious! The words "Say when" will forever be ruined for me, as this is what I'll be thinking of!!
Definitely adult sexual scenes, but honestly, there were only a couple, so if spice isn't your thing, I definitely think you could still read this!

This is one of those books that I could not stop thinking about when I wasn't reading it.
The ending had me in a choke hold, and I CANNOT wait for the second book to come out.

This was the dark fantasy romance I needed. This was so dang good for my mood reader fantasy brain. It was complex and a lot of world building but presented in the way that I love, while the plot just plots along.

I really wish I had read the previous series before reading this but it wasn’t a necessity. You can still understand and follow along. I just love knowing ALL THE THINGS.

Our FMC is strong, she’s resilient, she’s trying her dang best for revenge. Our MMCs…all of them are villains who don’t remember who they are. True villains. There’s revenge, there is unwanted pining, slow burn and some giggle moments too. And I really can’t wait for this series to continue.

If your need some
•immersive world building
•feral, violent villain MMC…6 of them
•sassy, independent, strong FMC
•adorable feisty side animal character
Pick this one up. Please check your triggers! This one has some violence and gore…like literal hearts ripped out chests.

Thank you Nerd Fam for the advanced reader copy. This is review is my own honest opinions.

This is a Why Choose / Reverse Harem story, which is not my thing usually, but I became invested in these characters while reading Lana's Fae Guardian series.
The Sluagh are 6 anti-heroes who once had soul sucking power and are now are under the thrall of a wicked queen and in a different, very strange realm which is obsessed with perfection. This book focuses on Fox, the only one of the Sluagh to retain his powers & memories, & Willow, who the Sluagh had believed to be their fated queen.
This is a great story. Willow finds herself lost, in more ways than one, and in the same realm as the Sluagh with no way home. She has revenge on her mind, as she believes they ruined her life, but the truth is revealed as the story progresses.
This book is spicy but also very sweet. Willow is a strong heroine who's a bit morally grey but has a lot of compassion, & Fox is so sweet & devoted: you really feel for him as he battles uphill to remind his brothers who they really are.
Warning: a lot is resolved, but it has a cliff hanger ending!

The banter in this is amazing! I was hooked all the way through. Although admittedly, it did take me a minute to understand their world. A heartbreaking cliffhanger ending. Multiple POV but mainly just the two MC, with only a couple of chapters from another character. Magic, enemies to lovers, shifters, reverse harem, slow burn.

This wasn’t good. The world building wasn’t done well and I had no idea that anything was. Nothing was properly explained and the romance aspect was a real let down. I felt no chemistry which is a shame because I was drawn to the story because of the romance. Willow also read young which was off putting.

TLDR: I really liked it, I want more, and now I need to read the other series set in this universe!

Part 1: The Confusion
Although it's written as a spin-off in the same world as some of Lana's other works, Castle of Nevers and Nightmares is supposed to read like a standalone. This is my first book of Lana's so I don't have any other context, but it definitely felt like I was missing important background information or history. I had trouble keeping up with what was going on for the first 10-20% of the book.

It eventually felt like I had enough grasp on things to enjoy the rest of the story, but I just couldn't help but wonder if I'd be more invested if I had read the Fae Guardians series first. I could be totally off base since I have nothing to compare it to.

There are so many groups of beings to keep track of: Maebh, the Morrigan, Oberon, Titania, the Nevers, Nothings, Chasers, Nightmares, 10 deities, 6 slaugh (aka the Hive or The Six), the fae or "good folk", Guardians, Radiants, Houses, dragons, mortals, and shifters. It's alot.

I also felt like the attention on Willow's beauty standards towards the beginning was a bit shallow and petty, BUT realized quickly how it plays into the larger plot and the mindset of the strange world she finds herself in. So, if that's a thing that bothers you, don't let it deter you from reading more!!

Part 2: The Hook
ALL THAT ASIDE, the premise of Willow finding herself in a strange land and coming to terms with the fact that she is the object of The Six's obsessions is fun.

Read if you like:
💀 Touch her and die vibes
💀 Why Choose/Reverse harem (eventually)
💀 Horns
💀 Fated Mates
💀 Magic systems
💀 Baby dragons
💀 Found family

"Just say when, little wolf, and I'll make a meal out of you."

Fox is a sexy and loyal little Nightmare, and I loved seeing his and Willow's relationship build. This story features Fox as the primary love interest, and it feels like it's being set up so each subsequent book will highlight a different one of The Six. That will be really fun 🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆

🐝 Legion is The First
🐝 Bodin is The Second
🐝 Emrys is The Third
🐝 Varen is The Fourth
🐝 Fox is The Fifth
🐝 Styx is The Sixth

There's some spice in the second half of the book, and while I craved more, I can tell it's building up to be a spicy series overall. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series as well as Lana's backlog of books from this world!! Consider me a fan!

OOOOMMMGGGGGG eeeekkkkkkk!! Where do I even start?!!!

Ok.. breathe.. breathe.

I have been waiting and in love with the Slaugh for like freaking-ever so to say I was excited is an understatement.

This book was everythingggg. Ugh.

The references to the past stories were awesome so if you were a new reader you could follow along well enough. I suggested the whole reading order (cause it’s amazing) and you get an even better experience.

This fantastical dream/nightmare world/realm was just so freaking cool. I was annoyed with the FMC sometimes BUT it just goes to show her age and growth still to come. She’s going, she’s had a really hard past and has a lot to learn on her own. Which she slowly IS doing in this book which I liked. I can’t wait to see how she continues to grow over the next books.

Slaugh.. my gods. I’m in love. And my heart is also breaking for what they have had to endure, go through and wait eons for. I don’t wanna give away spoilers but my god!!! Ahhhhh

Fox.. just .. yesssssss 🥵🥵🫠🫠🫠 all the YES. And Legion.. you’re gonna get there my friend. Poor Varen, Helllooo Bhodin 😈 and Styx! 😫

AND A DRAGON!!!! Yasssssssssss!!!! Baby Hunt is THE BEST!

The plot is amazing and the smut is delicious. I always love how Lana has the slow burn magic with plot and world building and spice. So good!!

Now… let’s get this off my chest ..

WHHAAATTTT THE HECK IS THAT CLIFFHANGER ?!!!

I hate you..: I don’t actually .. but rude 😂

ALL THE STARS!!!!!!! I need all the next ones immediately 😂

This was an interesting offshoot to the Fae Guardians universe. I love the idea of Willow being the queen bee in a reverse harem of soul-sucking demon-like monsters. However, I was a wee bit lost in the Panem-Effie-Trinket-feeling world. I still have no idea how Willow ended up in this weird Academy-esque Hunger Games. I have no idea how the Sluagh ended up in…. Ireland? Who is Titania and where the heck has SHE been the last 30 years? It all felt a bit contrived.

BUT,

I am fascinated by the Sluagh. I can’t wait to see more of them. I really hope Willow woman’s-up in the next book and stops being so wishie-washy. I get it, this is her book where she has to grow into her final form, but man is it annoying sometimes. This book was in its element when it stopped trying to be a weird dark academy wannabe and embraced the feral darkness that is the essence of the Sluagh. Those scenes, as well as Willow coming to terms with her growing bond with them, were great to read. I could have done without the half-assed “tournament” and its confusing caste system, the pointless love triangle (we all knew where that was going), and the entire cast of characters affiliated with that part of the book. Not at all interesting.

I loved the BAR scenes and Cait’s character is intriguing. I know this is the first in a series of books, however I wanted so much more of Willow’s whole dynamic with Legion, Emerys, Fox, Varen and Bodin. And Styx?? I can’t wait to see more of him! Loved the nice twist at the end.

Actual Rating: 3.5/5⭐️

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

This was good and I’m really interested in seeing where this series is gonna go from here.

I really appreciated that each of The Six had their own personalities and quirks making them each unique from one another. So far Varen is definitely my favourite of the six with his “bee-isms”.

I feel like pacing was a little off. Some things were taking longer than they needed to while others felt very rushed. As well if felt a little repetitive about some things as they felt like they kept going in circles.

While it is stated that reading the Fae Guardians series is not necessary to enjoy this series I feel like if you have not read that series then you cannot fully immerse yourself in this book because you will be left confused with how much of this is caused by the events of those books. While I was able to read this quite quickly I think that is because I have read all of the currently released Fae Guardians Series. If I hadn’t already read those then it would have taken me much longer because I would’ve been trying to decipher what had happened prior to this book.

Overall this was a good start to the Fae Devils Series.
