Red Hood: The Hill (2024) #3

Rate this book
All hell comes to the Hill…literally! Jason Todd has gone up against his fair share of monsters and paranormal creatures in his time, but he’s never gone up against anything quite like the demonic creatures that have been unleashed in the streets of his new hometown. Literal monsters roam the city, metaphorical monsters pull the strings in the shadows, and they all have Red Hood in their sights!

We’re making progress insofar as us knowing exactly who the players are—finally. That’s as far as we got. Why Omar hates the Watch is still a mystery. Why Junior is doing what he’s doing is also a mystery. Why Jason keeps saying he’s not staying but is shipping stuff to the Hill constantly, is also not answered.

We have a new player in the mix and some weird creatures, so, honestly, this series may just be derailing itself before it even got out the station.

The art is cleaner and consistent, but the characters got thrown under the bus here. Gary is so well drawn, he comes alive. Why Gary? I don’t know. One panel of Junior looks like a photograph. Killer Croc, so good. But the rest of the time and with the actual important characters—smooshed faces. Denise just looks wrong here, like all of her just is done wrong. Dana looks different depending on who she’s with. Jason still looks terrible, he looks like every stage of Elvis Presley’s life smooshed into one face. Not kidding. The biggest sin here is that short, curvy Carmen is suddenly slender with giant tits. The hell? I could scream at this monstrosity of a series. Really, who greenlit this and let it keep continuing.

Btw, we still don’t know what was Bruce’s gift. Seriously, it’s even changed hands twice and we still don’t know. This is getting quite ridiculous now.

This issue is definitely the best one in this series so far. Still feels like it could be focusing more on Red Hood as he is the title character, but this feels like a turning point, as the title of the issue so aptly identifies. I did not get the impression from previous issues that Jason was reluctant to help Dana and The Watch with “their bad guy” so maybe that’s why the insistence on this and him not staying felt a little out of place. I still find the writing of this series pretty confusing, which I think is the unfortunate result of introducing so many new characters and a new setting in a such a short limited series. Otherwise, I think it’s all starting to come together.

We’ve reached a point where things are happening just for the sake of it. Smh. Red Hood already doesn’t get the attention or respect he truly deserves, yet we’re getting a run with his name on it that does nothing for the character—only further diminishing interest in future Red Hood books. Also, the art is all over the fkn place.

3.5 Stars. Solid Hill story but Jason has played bigger roles as cameos in other comic titles then in this series (which is literally named after him). I am hoping with the addition of Batdad that Jason will play a bigger role in the next issue but I'm doubtful.
