The year is 1981.

Executed serial killer Marvin Brumlow is the new superstar of the most violent entertainment sport in Hell, The Boogeyman Championships. He is a celebrity, a cultural icon, and the fans love him. They watch in delight as he returns for his next clash, a homecoming to the abandoned mental institution where he was once imprisoned, to hunt down another group of unsuspecting teenagers.

Who are they, this new group of victims? Who cares? They are simply meat for the grinder, and Marvin must dispatch them in the most brutal and entertaining ways he can think of if he wants to become the #1 Boogeyman. But is he a celebrity at the top of his game, or just a pawn in a more sinister and diabolical scheme? Either way, the fans want more blood and guts, and Marvin is only too happy to oblige.

I’ll be honest, this one had me doubting myself.

Was it supposed to be funny? Or have a really reached that point where I should just put the books down and take up knitting for a while?

There’s lots of blood and gore and violence, as you would expect.
The author did a really good job of catching that traumatized, Alpha male mentality of Marvin.

But the kills? And the moments of self-doubt? It had me on the floor, laughing my ass off.

It makes it really difficult to rate this one, because for entertainment value I could not fault it. It is a very solid 5 on that front. However, it will most definitely not be for everyone. I can already hear words like “cis” being thrown around because heaven forbid that an author can write a character that is not like them!

So, yeah, 5 stars for entertaining me, but with a warning to those who become so easily offended by fiction.

Dying Sheep 2 reunites readers with the Boogeyman Championship contender Marvin.

He’s out to kill more folks in the most bloody and brutal ways possible for the enjoyment of the denizens of Hell.

“Marvin Brumlow doesn’t fail, not at killing, anyway. I am seven feet of hateful, disfigured, redneck violence. Dirty and sweaty, stinking and cruel, that’s me.”

I really enjoyed the escapades in this story, and how the victims tried their best to survive, hide, and fight back against the beast of a man they were up against.

It definitely feels like there is more to Marvin’s story, and we got a bit more insight into his history and thoughts! Can’t wait for more murder and mayhem in the next entry!

I couldn't wait for the sequel to Jesse D' Angelo's extreme slasher novella 'Dying Sheep,' and … here it is: 'Dying Sheep 2' is meaner, crueler, fiercer, wilder and definitely funnier than the first! Serial killer Marvin Brumlow has finally found his niche, and grown perfectly into his celebrity status as Hell's Reality TV star killing machine. No regrets or second thoughts here!

Who's Marvin Brumlow, you say? Well, first of all he's dead. But if The Terminator and Ed Lee's Header had a baby, it might have grown up to be Jesse D' Angelo's Marvin, the seven-feet tall, brutally disfigured, insane "redneck" menace; there's so much humor and wit in the story, however, so much cheekiness and creativity in the killings, that 'Dying Sheep 2' ends up in its own, totally unique place, a mix of UFC mentality and 1980s B-movies atmosphere. All in D'Angelo's flowing, easy, hugely energetic prose!

***spoiler alert***
That said, I should mention that no matter how funny and (occasionally) sympathetic Marvin may come across, he's really a nasty sociopathic monster, who enjoys killing and torturing. One had better keep this firmly in mind, because there is one scene that, all things considered, may still offend: Marvin chooses to present one of his female victims as a sort of gift to his friends (a bunch of ghostly undead serial killers - don't ask!) and she undergoes horrific sexual abuse (not shown). So the hilarity should not blind anyone that this is a genuinely extreme horror novella.

In any case, I enjoyed the book and would unreservedly recommend it to everyone who likes extreme horror, inventive killings, entertaining plot, and spirited, sparkling prose!

A Horror Bookworm Recommendation
Dying Sheep 2 by Jesse D’Angelo
https://horrorbookwormreviews.com/

A seven foot disfigured redneck full of hate, Marvin Brumlow does not fail, not at killing anyway. Every drop of his psychopathic sadism makes him the perfect candidate for the Boogeyman Championships. As the show begins and the adoring fans settle in, eight friends from DePaul University have been chosen to be Marvin’s latest tally marks and could be just enough to obtain “the championship belt.”

Dying Sheep 2 by Jesse D’Angelo is a disturbing gore sport that takes place between unsanctioned worlds of Hell and Earth. With meat clever or ice pick, one thing is certain, the demise of forced contestants always results in crimson colored blood and agonizing screams of death. Fear and No Remorse is the only way to assure the good people of Hell get their money’s worth for this entertaining killing spree of little piggies.

Jesse D’Angelo is a master at mixing bizarre wit and extreme horror with a warped comedic narrative. The shock value in this book is as good as any Alice Cooper show on a Saturday night…a guaranteed gore-soaked good time. I mean where else can you hear the subtle sounds of Shkk, Chufft, Schlop Schlop Schlop. Bile driven with creepy carnage, D’Angelo puts the Splat in Splatterpunk and the X in Extreme.

Graphic and often gory depictions of violence, Dying Sheep 1 & 2 are hyper-intensive horror with no limits. Which raises the question…who will survive and what will be left of them? Ladies and Gentlemen…A Five Star ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Horror Bookworm Recommendation.

I loved this book just as much as I loved the first! The sense of humor within this book is on point. I love the plot, storyline, and how quirky the concept is.

I was captivated the whole time! I love how Jesse incorporated the paranormal, and I felt like the execution was a creative touch. The kills within the book were even more creative than the first. Both did a great job though with keeping up with the 80s Slasher theme.

This book will weirdly have you rooting for the wrong team in the best way.

Well done!! This is definitely one of my 2024 favorites and got me right out of a reading slump. This book is a great palette cleanser, clocking in at about 100 pages or so. I sat down and finished this book in one sitting without breaks.

I received this book as an ARC to review here on BookSirens. I will also put my review on Goodreads, Amazon, and StoryGraph.

Marvin Brumlow is back!

With a year having passed on Earth, and Samantha retaining her existence, our protagonist plots his revenge for round 2. Given the events that transpire in the first installment, Brumlow is on the top of the food chain now in the Boogeyman Championship, which has provided him considerable popularity, but he is also at the mercy of the internal politics of the Event itself. The story progresses much like Dying Sheep with the championship, and the ending again leaves it open for a sequel, which I hope the author will consider.

While I read 1 and now 2, the thought occurred to me that while in a horror movie, it never did make sense as to why the slasher just randomly disappeared. Where did they go? The author answers that, in relation to the rules of the Championship. A very small detail in the genre, but one that was built around, and this idea was given life. There's a lot to the story than that, such as blood and guts, but this is an original take on a genre on a genre that's normally defined by the end of a knife. This story goes beyond that, shows us a much scarier world, where everything is organized, and it's run like a competition.

Jesse D'Angelo gave us a great and gore-soaked sequel! Dying Sheep was by far one of my favorite campy slashers of last year & readers are going to love this follow-up.

Dying Sheep 2 transports us back to the hellish nightmare in which Marvin is continuing his deadly rise to fame in the afterlife. This story starts with unfinished business (sorry [REDACTED] if it helps we were rooting for you)! However, then Marvin receives word that his next bout in the real world is about to begin.

I cannot tell you enough how much I enjoy Jesse D'Angelo's writing. It is campy, funny, and witty. The action & gore sequences are something that I genuinely enjoy. They make me squirm and are just done in a classic B-movie way that I cannot look away from. I devoured this story and know that readers will do so as well. They are going to love this return to a demented killer with more bodies to pile up.

Check out this story because you won't be disappointed!

We are back for another round of Boogeyman Championships with none other than Marvin Brumlow! This was such a fun read! Marvin is back a year later to compete in the Boogeyman Championship, and hopefully snag the title off champion. This round we are taken to the mental institute where Marvin stayed while still alive to murder a group of annoying college kids. The kills are brutal, and as always some good humor. Absolutely loved it!

Dying Sheep two by Jesse D’Angelo gives us another viewpoint into the life oh rather death of Marvin Brumlow he’s coming close to being the champion of the most popular show in hell a show that even the devil shows up to watch live and in person. After taking care of loose ends from book one namely little Sammy his new challenge is the take out some college student hanging out at the old hospital where he was locked up after killing his wife and two children and trying to kill himself. in the second book we also get to see Marvins softer side and learn that when it comes to killing in torture he does have standards. I love these books from The publisher of this book whose name I can’t say let alone try and spell especially love the classics they do but irregardless this is about this book I do want to say I wish we could see other people competing in the show such as the current champion although I do love Marvin and his inner thoughts because I find them so hilarious But it would be fun to see them to go head to head to see who could kill the fastest I don’t know why but I really thought the second book would be a different competitor but having said that I do love Marvin and would be happy to see him again in any capacity this is a great book if you love blood guts and gore with lots of LOL moments then you’ll definitely Love this book by Jesse DeAngelo. I want to thank the publisher for my free arc copy via books Sirens please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

“Even worst than the first” is a fitting slogan. If by worse, you mean better, and in the best ways. Jesse is a fantastic storyteller, and he weaves together an excellent EH/SP tale for those of us with deviant reading “appetites”. The mixture of gore and humor is a fine balancing act, and I think he succeeds in writing them in equal measure. Marvin is a rather unforgettable character, and I can’t wait to see what his next adventure holds. This was recommended to me by a friend of the author, and the second installation in the series certainly didn't disappoint. NOTE: this is not for the trigger sensitive, the über socially political, the pearl clutchers, or those who just don’t like SP books but read them for some unknown reason and leave a crappy review 😂

He’s back again! Marvin is back to his antics in the latest instalment! After we leave off from the last book we get to delve back in to see how samatha is doing and what happens to her. There’s a new bundle of people for Marvin but it’s at a place where he has history which goes swimmingly! The humour in this always catches me off guard but I love it! Enjoyed this one more than the first! More icky moments, more gore, more filth. What more could you want!

Thank you, Jesse D'Angelo

This can be read either as a standalone or right after
Dying Sheep one.

Contenders keep winning to maintain the title of Hells Champion. Does the current Champion have what it takes to win this match.

It gave me vibes of a darker Mortal Combat. It's creepy and gory. Extreme Horror lovers should enjoy this.

Wow what a fun ride and I want to go again!! I can't explain how much I love Marvin even though I should not be okay with that, but here we are. He is such a fun character to read and see his creative ways of killing. He is so vile and crude but I can't stop reading!! If you like gore, humor and just plain ole slashing antics give this one a go, after you read the first of course. The Perfect sequel to Dying Sheep!! Thank you Jesse for getting this red flag into my hands!

Superbly dumb fun

I loved the first book in the series, the whole idea behind it is genius. Undead serial killer is a used as as the villian in a slasher film for hell's entertainment

Marvin is a brutal killer, bit its great to spend time in his head as he's genuinely funny. There's some brutal, but clever kills and the kids are annoying enough that you're rooting for Marvin to destroy them

I need more from this series thanks!

Jesse D'Angelo did it again!

Dying sheep was a superb fun slasher novella that became a favourite of mine (and I don't even love slashers that much), and this sequel is a fantastic rehashing of our favourite killer Marvin's shenanigans!

Similar to the first book but with a lot of new fun elements, this book had me laughing and cringing throughout as Marvin, our 7ft monster dead-ish serial killer plowed his way through the next set of (un)lucky teens. Some seriously imaginative death scenes ensued that will have you in stitches.
My favourite part is still that it's from the killer's point of view.

Love this book to bits, thanks Jesse for being so messed up in the head. You rock.

If you’ve read the first one, you’re gonna love this sequel! It’s jam packed with even more entertainment and gore than the first. If you haven’t read the first one, you can still enjoy this story, but I highly recommend it because you’re missing out! I mean, why wouldn’t you want in on all the action? Good ole Marv is probably one of my favorite characters. Jesse paints the picture for all his characters as if you were seeing them in real life. Marv is like a big teddy bear, you kinda want to hug him but you don’t want to die while doing so. Being a life long screw up, he now lives his best life eternally in hell. That’s right, Marv is dead. He was recruited into hells main event, finally his large physique pays off, a game of horror and gore that brings people from every part of hell, including the devil himself, to applaud him. Contestants return to earth for a short period of time with only one thing on their minds … murder! The bloodier the better and Marv was a champion. This round though, is different. He is faced with his past life on earth, the ghosts that landed him in hell in the first place. But, he is determined and willing to do whatever it takes to complete the round, turning his gore level up a notch…..

This story is so much fun, I love a good horror story that can make me laugh and gag at the same time. Jesse is absolutely phenomenal when it comes to bringing you right into the story, as if you were watching from the sidelines. His talent amazes me and I’m looking forward to seeing what games of gore Marv gets into next. You never know how many rounds are left!

Marvin Brumlow is a “human” woodchipper. What does it say about an author that creates a one-man serial killing machine of a character while maintaining some sort of sympathetic aspect to him? Not only that but the reader ends up actually rooting for him to a large degree. It says he’s a master of the splatter genre, that’s what! Although this could be read as a standalone book, I am glad I read the original Dying Sheep because there is more detailed background in it.

Told through the lens of the monstrously large and grossly disfigured main character who resides in hell, the story unfolds as he finds creative ways of slaughtering people in the living world through a veil and with limited time restrictions. Without revealing too much, he is doing this in a competition that amuses the other residents of hell.

I greatly enjoyed this sequel as much as the original. The writing is relentless and to the point and there are no slow parts because it’s rather short in length. The length works for this type of tale and leaves you hoping for even more of old Marvin and his escapades, just like the first. There is no sequel letdown here, just fun and gory entertainment! Loved this book – it deserves more than 5 stars but that’s all I can give.

“Oh yeah, I feel something in the air tonight too. Murder.”
Marvin is back and he is better than ever, my friends. He’s the kind of MC that you are horrified by and want to love in equal measure. These next footfalls of his journey are almost as large as those feet that he uses to stomp heads when he’s in the Arena, just please don’t ask him to wear boots or you may end up on the wrong end of that footwear.

This next venture into the Arena is more gore-packed than the first… it harkens back to the days of 80’s slasher flicks with it’s mix of blood, humor and just pure excess for the sake of excess. It features some fun little twists that you never see coming and the deaths, those deaths…
That first one set the damn bar so high that I couldn’t fathom that they could get any better; and then they do … These are some of the most creative, humorous and f*ing fantastic deaths that I have ever read (and I read a lot of death). I was sending them to my non-horror reading friends and I think my boyfriend is now even more scared of me than he was before after he experienced my glee in reading these grandiose un-alivings.

To top it off, in true Jesse D’Angelo style, he creates a voice for our protagonist that is so real and is absolutely enthralling. You are transported to the inside of Brumlow’s absolute hornet’s nest of a mind and feel yourself getting stung at every turn. The strange thing is that I found myself smiling at every sting, laughing out loud and wanting more … thinking, “sting me harder” please.

That “seven feet of hateful, disfigured, redneck violence. Dirty and sweaty, stinking and cruel…”; “a psychopath and a sadist...” and the “newest superstar in Hell, killing in the Boogeyman Championships to the delight of legions of fans.” – That’s Marvin Brumlow in a nutshell and I cannot encourage you enough to step into the stands and watch the master at work.

The cover is right, this one is definitely worse than the first. I don't know if I've been desensitized to these levels of violence, or if I just knew (mostly) what I was getting into this time, but I was able to firmly set my morals and sensibilities to the side and enjoy Marvin kill people in the most outlandish, gory, gruesome ways possible.

This is a sequel/second installment that does a wonderful job at building and expanding upon the first. The glimpses into Marvin's life before this series were fun little tidbits that gave the story some depth, which I greatly enjoyed! I'm hoping we'll see more like that in the next installment. I also appreciated how the deaths were crazier and more creative than the first "Dying Sheep" novella.

One thing I want to know, though, more than anything else, is what kind of cheese Snapdragon peddles? Mr. D'Angelo if you read this, I want answers!

Very fun ride, I can feel my horizons broadening and I'm beginning to appreciate the horror genre (particularly slashers and gore fests like this) in ways I didn't before.

I really shouldn't have enjoyed this book, but I did! Once again, we have Marvin Brumlow, executed serial killer, stalking victims to kill them off in horrifically entertaining ways. Marvin hopes to become the champion of the Boogeyman Championships by his skills at his job. Did I mention that Marvin is definitely dead after his execution and now resides in Hell? This is where his fan base is located and those citizens enjoy the goriest, most violent kills his imagination can provide.

The book is full of multiple gory, gruesome scenes as Marvin tries to top his best performance. But, as with all great slasher stories, the pace is quick, often amusing (does this make me a sicko?) and there is even a bit of humanity mixed in.

I look forward to Marvin's future escapades. And, I want to know what punk rock ever did to deserve such ire from the author? (Maybe provide a playlist for this one!)

As all of D’angelo’s books this had me from the beginning. This one read like you are rereading an old favourite. The gore along with the comical commentary from the main character blends perfectly. I feel like this ends up somewhere between Friday the 13th and Airplane.
There was excellent and original use of a basketball hoop and I think my favourite description of the carnage was looking like a “Smashed pile of lasagna”.
I finished this in a matter of hours and should have stretched it out and made it last longer but alas I could not help myself.
This was a fun romp of a slasher story and I hope there will be as many instalments of this as there was Friday the 13th.

Jesse D'Angelo does it again with Dying Sheep 2, delivering a brutal and unapologetically dark sequel. Set in 1981, the story follows Marvin Brumlow, a serial killer turned supernatural force, as he hunts his prey in an abandoned mental institution. D'Angelo’s sharp, evocative writing creates a visceral experience, balancing dark humor with vividly grotesque imagery. Splatterpunk fans will appreciate the originality and raw energy that sets this slasher apart from the rest. With every page, D'Angelo cements his reputation as a master storyteller unafraid to push boundaries. This is a must read for fans of the genre, and even those who are interested in starting.

This is my honest review of Dying Sheep 2. This was a super fast read, and easy to read. I was honestly hoping for more gore and violence. I did love that it very much reminded me of an 80's slasher movie. I think I just wanted a little bit more. But again that is me and I really love extreme horror.
If you want something fast paced and easy to read I recommend this book . I definitely liked the concept of the book.
I was given the ARC by booksirens for an honest review. Overall rating would be a 3.8.

The writing is just so confident and cocky. This book sits with full manspreading and doesn’t care. This is a book that walks down the center of the hall, arms bulging out and glares at you if he bumps into you. This book NEVER sits to pee.
DYING SHEEP 2 by Jesse D’Angelo is filled with FU attitude and it was fun as hell.
“He’s in shock, staring up at seven feet of redneck beauty. My gore-soaked overalls. My hairy shoulders. My mangled, scarred face. It takes him a second until the shock wears off, and then he screams like a little bitch.”

This was definitely different. Talk about reality tv with a twist. Marvin is popular with the audience and has a great following, but he is ready to become the champ and really rake in the money.

There are numerous graphic depictions throughout this story, so if you are squeamish by nature, I would avoid this book. Great for true lovers of horror.

Dying Sheep 2 is no-holds-barred slasher fun! We rejoin Marvin again, months after the events of the first book and he's something of a celebrity in Hell now. Although Marvin is obviously despicable, I have to admit I also kind of like him. He's funny and creative with the kills, two qualities I admire in a serial killer from literal Hell. 5 stars

D’Angelo reaches slasher perfection once again, with the second book in his Dying Sheep series! Slashers are by far my favorite horror sub genre, and D’Angelo is killin’ it (literally and figuratively). DS2, brings us even more brutality and gore than the first! Marvin is a beast of a character, completely horrible yet lovable at the same time. He really makes you root for the “bad guy”. If you are looking for a grade A slasher, with a super fun and creative twist, look no further!
