The only reason I'm giving this four stars is that the writing isn't as sophisticated as it could be. But I'd give the story ten stars if I could. Many people are aware of horrific events like the Holocaust, the systematic starvation of Ukrainians under Stalin, or the Rwandan genocide. However, many are ignorant of the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, and this book is a stark reminder--and wake-up call--as to how insidious and destructive communism is.
