The problem with a lot of short stories is that there is little room for character development. Such is the case with this book. We only get surface level views of these characters... we don't really get to know them, so some of the things they say and do seem contradictory.
We are introduced to Kenya Edwards as a single mother who appears to be all alone in world, except for her 4 y.o. daughter (Cameron) and her best friend Tanya. Her mother has passed away--we don't know when or how; the father she has never known has recently passed away, and reasons that make no sense and are never explained, he leaves his tech company--which is actually a criminal empire--to Kenya, who he had worked diligently to keep far away from his world.
What?
Because of this nonsensical inheritance, Kenya and her daughter are being threatened. The only person she can think of who could possibly keep her safe is her ex, Slater Rockwell. We don't know much about Slater: both his parents were killed--we don't know when or how; his sister is also dead--we don't know when or how; he is estranged from his bio brother, Silas--we don't know why; he has three best friends he calls his brothers--we don't know anything about them, how they all met, or where this bond came from. Slater owns a tech company (his friends each own companies, as well) but we aren't told exactly what his company does. He has a business rival, Carson, who is mentioned twice, but nothing comes of him being in the story. And the only thing that speaks to Slater being able to help Kenya is that he has money and can provide armed security... which doesn't explain why the Victor Sullivan backs away from Kenya when he hears Slater's name.
We get these moments where Kenya is scared and vulnerable, then in the next breath she becomes Super B--all defiant and ready to take the world. Please choose a personality and stick with it.
Maybe it's just me, but Slater's penchant for flowery prose is just--no. I can't mesh the bug bad protector sounding like a poet.
The easy rekindling of their "love" after five years of secrets and lies (including the fact that Slater is a father), and the fact that Slater walked out on her is not believable to me.
A lot of details get skipped. For example, after putting Cameron to bed, Slater and Kenya are in the hall outside her bedroom. They start out having a tense convo, then suddenly she's backed up against a wall and they're doin the do. HOW? Did he burst through his slacks and punch a hole through her clothes?! Come on!
There are lots of typos, inconsistencies (like referring to Cameron's brown eyes when they are notably green, like her father's), words that are misused, and character names that get mixed up. (I'm sure the epilogue is supposed to be Silas' POV, not Slater's.)
The real kicker for me? Slater reaches out to Silas--who is deeply entrenched in the criminal underworld--we don't really know how or why--for help in keeping Cameron and Kenya safe. Silas gives this speech about killing the people who are threatening his "family," about Slater getting his hands dirty and crossing boundaries... and I was there for it! Except they confront the guy (Victor) and let him walk away.
WHAT?!?!
This man tried to kill your daughter (and Kenya, too) and you let him live?!?!
And they all live in Happy Swell Acres, holding hands and singing Kumbaya.
I tried to like this story but I just couldn't. The writing style is disjointed. There are too many subplots that are hinted at but never explained. What happened with the members of Slater's family that are now deceased and made him estranged from his brother who has embraced the criminal world. What broke up the relationship between Slater and Kenya before she decides she needs him to help protect her. It is implied that he walked away from her because he never wanted to marry and have kids, but what set him on such a path? Then there are his chosen brothers. What makes them so. I felt that this book implies we should know about this brotherhood, so I checked and can see that there are earlier stories about each of them, so I guess you have to read their books to find out what binds them, but I doubt that one of their books will delve into the back stories of Slater and Kenya very much. What does Kenya do prior to getting back in touch with Slater? Does she have a job or a business, or does she just live off of the money that her absentee father has provided for her care or possibly an inheritance from her deceased mom? There is a slight foray into her having coding skills from back in her college days, but also the indication is that she hasn't used them for many years. Also I am certain that the epilogue, which is attributed to Slater is actually the set up for a next book for his brother Silas. So it shouldn't indicate Slater as the pov but Silas. There are other continuity issues as well. There is much repetition in the descriptives of locations. How many times do we have to be reminded of the view of the skyline. Then there is Cameron's bedroom which is described as having plush carpet, yet when she steps across the threshold she is walking across a hardwood floor. Slater is leaving early and coming home late to avoid Kenya and Cameron, then he is suddenly receiving a call asking if he will be home for story time no in between build up of a relationship between him and his daughter. One day he decides that he is sure she is his daughter because he sees their similarity in appearance including eye color, and apparently she is also the spitting image of his deceased sister. Weren't these things obvious from the first time he laid eyes on the child? Also at one point her eyes are described as being a warm brown then they go back to being green. I realize that many authors write several different books at the same time but it is just sloppy not to review the work prior to publishing to edit errors like these. There are also many grammatical errors. She is especially prone to leaving words out of sentences. The hardest part for me, is that both of these characters are written with so much angst in their personal thoughts, it is like reading about teenagers instead of people in their thirties. I really don't understand Kenya's need to keep an undeniable parentage of Cameron from Slater once she has decided that she and Cameron need his protection. What is the point? Since he decided to walk away from their relationship before she knew about the pregnancy, what right does he have to be upset that she didn't tell him. His actions dictated hers. So if he missed out on his daughter's formative years, that's on him. She has no need to apologize and he has no right to be angry. But since she has decided that he is the only one that can help and protect her and her daughter, why not be straight up with him about Cameron from the start, since that would be much more likely to persuade him to take on this protector role.
Trope: Concealed parentage. Target for a hit. Marriage for security. Second chance romance.
Characters: 1. Kenya Edwards, heroine. 2. Slater Rockwell, hero, owns a quarter of a lucrative billionaire enterprise, NovusRock Technologies. 3. Cameron "Sugar Bear" is the four year old daughter of Kenya and Slater. 4. Celine is Slater's deceased sister. 5. Silas Rockwell is the estranged older brother of Slater. 6.-8. Slater's best friends and business partners: Gunner, Knox and Jaxon. 9. Nathan Edward is Kenya's deceased criminal father. 10. Carson Newell is Slater's chief business rival. 11. Victor Sullivan is the villain whose threatening Kenya and Cameron and Slater.
This is an okay story but there is holes in the storyline for instance, does Kenya work or has her father been financing her livelihood. A lot of time is devoted to Kenya's internal dialogue over her abandonment issues and trying to justify or create sympathy for her not allowing her daughter to have a relationship with Slater, her father. She goes to Slater for protection, marries him, sleeps with him but doesn't tell him he's her daughter's father. I am pleased hat Slater and Silas rekindled their familiar ties and that Slater and his daughter are enjoying a healthy relationship. Kenya isn't a likable character she's selfish and thoughtless and has nailed herself to the 'Slater done me wrong and abandoned me cross'; but me and my body want him and need him to save us from the buggy men.
This story started out intriguing and I had high hopes for the storyline. The characters of Slater and Kenya were well written and had believable traits and a lot of chemistry. However, as another reviewer remarked, there were long gaps between timelines. I personally found some instances were a bit far fetched but not a deal breaker. As the story progressed, I felt like the author was taking the easy way out to solve the premise of the story; also there was a hint that Kenya might be pregnant but it didn’t pan out, making that scene ambiguous. The final thing that kept me from giving this story a higher rating was the Epilogue: generally this is the portion of the story that brings home the HEA but it didn’t happen. This chapter read more like an alternate reality, hinting at some tragedy that happened that isn’t explained. The company that Slater is saying he’s the CEO of belonged to his brother Silas. Then he is ruminating about a woman who has apparently caused some tragedy to befall his family (killing Silas or was the reason for his and Silas’ sister’s death? He is apparently planning to make her pay for some wrongdoing. No mention of Kenya, their daughter Cameron or his brother Silas. Was this a deleted scene or one that the author didn’t mean to include here? I’m confused and disappointed.
This story was worth reading. I applaud the momma bear in Kenya; she will do anything to protect her daughter Cameron. And that she truly still trusts Slater, the man who walked away from their relationship (unaware she was pregnant), is a good thing. Slater is determined to help and protect Kenya and (their) daughter. I wish Kenya had confessed the truth about Cameron, especially after she outright asked if Slater was her "daddy." I love that they're determined to ensure she and Cameron don't suffer harm because Kenya's dad, Edward, left her as CEO of Cipher Tech Solutions. Slater's help comes with a price which allows him the ultimate gift. He makes Kenya his wife, and he gets to be a daddy to his daughter, though he isn't sure of that fact before agreeing to help her. Cameron is a cutie. I love this series's strong, beautiful women; the fine-as-wine men are incredibly sexy. It was such a wonderful happy-ever-after for this family. I gave 5-Stars because I enjoyed this book; however, there were quite a few detail gaps. The epilogue said Slater, but the info was for possibly Silas since he became CEO of Cipher Tech. Thank you, Blaire, for my reading enjoyment, and I appreciate whoever designed the book covers.
This story is second chance romance with a secret child trope. The overall story is good, characters are well developed and a few spicy scenes. But there some gaps that caused me to be distracted, like FMC and MMC first meeting, he knew she had a child without her mentioning it. I would have like to have known what the FMC does for a living before all this started, there was some mention of her hacking abilities in later chapters but it would have been nice a STEM FMC (its rare in BWWM books). This story seems to jump ahead by weeks at some points and its not clear when it does, it makes it a like difficult track of events, like the MMC first introduction to the child is not told or mentioned, it just jumps to they were living together and he was avoiding them(mother and child), to he has story time with the child, but still hadn’t realized the child was his. The jumping of the timeline is the biggest part for me. But I really like the story in general, I may come back and reread again later.
Since I started reading this series there was one character that stood out from all the rest and I knew I wanted to know his story. And that character was Slater. Slater always had a mystery about him. It intrigued me so much that I kept hoping he would get his book. And then it happened. As soon as I saw this book drop I had to buy it. And let me say this... Best money I ever spent!!
Kenya desperately needed Slater's help. But there's just one hitch. She has a big secret that Slater doesn't know about. Now I loved the forced proximity, the chemistry, drama, sexy foreplay, steamy sexy & HOT sex scenes. But I really really loved the connection Slater developed with Cameron. That little girl had this man smiling and reading bedtime stories!!
But just when I thought the drama was over... Enter Silas Rockwell. Now this book got kicked up a notch. I loved Slater, Kenya, and Cameron getting their HEA. But I cannot WAIT to read Silas's story!! That book I know is gonna be 🔥🔥🔥💣💣💥💥💥
But Kenya was afraid of being hurt again. That was the reason why she kept a secret from Slater. His leaving her five years ago devastated her. It would have crushed her if he had not left her with a gift to love. Marrying him was his idea to keep Kenya and Cameron safe from her father's unscrupulous business tactics that she inherited. Slater was drawn instinctively to Cameron and she to him. Instinctively they knew who each other was. Slater initially left Kenya to protect her from the darker side of his family life. But, now that she was back in his life, he was not letting her go. He never stopped, loving her and she never stopped loving him. They both put their fears and hurt aside for th sake of their Sugarbear, Cameron. Their family was everything to them.
I just loved how Cameron and Slater interacted with each other. She had Slater wrapped around her finger in no time. It even caught Slater by surprise but he knew in his heart who Cameron was. Out of the mouths of babes, she let them know she knew.
I enjoyed reading this story. Slater, a vowed confirmed bachelor walked away from Kenya not knowing she was pregnant. Kenya stepped up, had her baby and was doing well raising her without a father. Circumstances arose and she had to reach out to Slater for protection. His solution to her dilemma was unorthodox, but he had an ulterior motive. The things they went through and his growing love for a beautiful little girl got me hooked! It is well written and hopefully there will be another installment with them in it!
This was the best book! It had intriguing characters like Gunner, Cameron, Kenya and Silas and of course, Slater. This book kept me grounded to the point I couldn’t put it down. At first I thought Slater was a sour puss but after realizing who Cameron was, he fell in love with His daughter and Kenya. People trying to kill Kenya and Cameron over the company that was willed to her. There are a lot of twists and turns but the devil got his due at the end and he should be going to jail for a long time.
I love second chances to reunite in love. Slater and Kenya parted yet she held a life altering secret. While I understand it, I do not condone it. Keeping the truth from Slater, even when she went to him for help had me mad. Yes, it all worked out in the end, it is one that I'll judge a tad more harsh. I think the epilogue was for Silas, not Slater. Other than that error, it was a good story.
I enjoyed reading this story. Slater left without knowing that Kenya was pregnant. Five years passed before Kenya and Slater saw each other again. The recent passing of a father she never knew left Kenya in a situation that she couldn't handle. She sought out Slater for help, but his solution threw her for a loop. It was a good read, but the lack of transition between scenes was the only problem I had with this story.
This book was very disappointing. I didn't connect well with Kenya or Slater because there was no character development and we didn't get a chance to know about their relationship before the story just jumped in when the relationship was over and feelings were hostile. The only redeeming factor is family being together at the end and Slater and Kenya's relationship being stronger than ever. The story had potential though.
When Slater and Kenya parted ways, he had no idea that he left a part of him with her. Now she is back seeking his protection and to do it they get married which solved both issues. Will their marriage have them rekindling their feelings and lead them along the path to a happily ever after.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Well first things first let's talk about the HUNKY man on the cover of the book that has the most mesmerizing green eyes a woman could lust over. Then Kenya and Slater deliver us the WOW factor in this book. Blaire is a fairly new author to me and all I can say is she has a God given talent at writing books that not only captivate you but really make you fall in LOVE with the characters.
I enjoyed reading this story and I loved the characters as well. I was a bit confused about the epilogue although it said Slater it seems to be about Silas,I'm assuming that there will be a story for Silas as,and hopefully there will be more information about Slater and family. With that said I would absolutely recommend reading this book I don't think you will regret it. Good job Ms. Wilde as usual I hope there will be more stories like these coming in the future. Thank you.👍🙏❤
I liked Kenya & Slater's story and glad they got back together. There are missing pieces in story though. Was Kenya's Dad Nathan a criminal or was his right man Victor the criminal working behind the scenes? Was Kenya pregnant with another baby? Also what was up with the ending? It seemed like a cliffhanger to me? Also why were Slater's parents and sister killed and by whom?
I was immediately captivated with this story. I could feel the danger and was anxiously waiting for the action to begin. I was disappointed that my hopes were raised when the outcome was lackluster. The author missed the opportunity to make this an awesome story because she did not capitalized on the action that was waiting to be unleashed.
Slater finally gets back the woman he loves. That love comes with an added bonus, a daughter he didn’t even know existed. Now that he has the woman, and his child he’s never letting either of them go, this was a good read, I enjoyed hear from his boy’s as well as his brother’s.
This was ok but I would've liked a little more, feels like something is missing. The story is intense until it was not. The second chance element was ok, the secret baby twist was too slow to resolve. I think the multiple tropes made this story seem incomplete, but maybe the blanks will be addressed in the other books in this series.
The only qualms I had with this story was the transitions. Many times there were no clear indications that a scene had changed, whether it was an hour later, a day or a location. You just kind realized after things weren't lining up like you've been reading. There was also a lot of repetition as far as internal dialog. Outside of that, the book was fine.
Good storyline that's well-written, I love the characters 🤗. The storyline gets right to the crux of the matter, secrets reveal secrets 😲. The past comes knocking, intrigue, shadows lurking, hot sex 💥💋👅🔥, powerful family, and the missing link 😳. Good read, page turner 😉.
Author filled story with Los of drama, intricate and danger. Surprising climax and ending not only in a HEA, but also a strong hint of revenge and retribution..... oh my!!☺
The ending could have been more exhilarating! Since she had experienced nausea, I was hoping she was pregnant. Instead, you gave us Hope Jacobs?! What a cliffhanger!!! Is there a book 2 of Slater? Great read tho'.
Slater by Blaire Wilde is a secret baby & second chance at love story. I'm enjoying BW books. I love romantic intrigue, mystery, shootouts, explosions, secrets and fighting scenes in my books. I enjoy sexy male and female characters all day long!! Good read. Ty🥰👏🏾👏🏾
Not my favorite but not my worst. There were gaps where the story where time is just weeks later, there are typos, and there is a very short resolution but the story is cute and brings some spice. So I kinda liked it.
This was a good book just need more action and please stop repeating the same sentence’s over and over ( I know I should tell him about Cameron but I am scared what it will do to the family we built). You said it like 8 times. Other than those 2 things the book was good.
Slater didn’t know he was capable of loving someone else. What him and Kenya shared long ago reignites. Along with that, being a family man was not in the cards. However, Cameron melted his heart! Family became his priority!! Love conquers all
Didn't know quite what to expect with this one. I didn't read the summary to this one. Story draws you in and after a few chapters you're hooked. It has a few twist and turns that make this a nice short story..
