There have been two men in Maggie Brady's life, the one she loved and the one she married. Sometimes things aren't always what they seem, or at least that's what she hoped to prove as she stepped off the plane into the hot South Australian sun, holding her daughter's hand. After her husband’s tragic death, she has one mission, to tell truth, no matter how much it hurts.
Tucker Kilpatrick had been an up and coming star on the American rodeo circuit until he and his best friend fell in love with the same woman. Now, nearly four years later, he is forced to confront his past and discover the truth about the woman he left behind.
Sometimes we have to confront our past and live with the consequences, and sometimes we get a second chance
“I learned a long time ago that you don’t always get what you want,”
Maggie is on her way to see Tucker, to interview him as her ex lover has become a highly sought after sculptor but that is not the only reason she goes to see him. She grabs the opportunity to tell him something important. After all she had promised her late husband that she would finally tell him the truth.
First she has to find him...which she does... by nearly driving him off the road. Luckily no one gets badly hurt. Maggie still has to get checked out by a doctor, that same doctor advises her that she will have to have someone checking up on her during the night as she might have a slight concussion. But somehow Maggie manages to get an even longer stay out of Tucker. She'll need to time because Tucker refuses to do an interview. Secretly he's curious, why did she come to see him after all this time.
I'm not sure what to make of this book, most of it deals with Maggie and Tucker dancing around their feelings. Not to mention all the times Maggie chickens out of confessing something she really needs to tell Tucker.
Nearly every time the two bump into each other they seem on the verge of jumping each others bones. But they almost never finish the act, most of the time it ends with one of the two turning the other down and walking away...or running away. It's so frustrating. The times that they're not interacting the story feels a bit dragging. You take all of that and the fact that I didn't like the characters much either.....I.....this is just not my book. Let's keep it at that.
I received this book from the author and the Making Connections group in exchange for a honest review.
Background: Years ago, Maggie(the heroine) met Tucker(the hero) and his best friend Mick(who was like a brother to him)at a rodeo. Maggie and Mick started dating, but Maggie and Tucker definitely had an attraction to each other. One night, Maggie and Tucker sleep together. That is something that I can't forgive in a character. They both betrayed Mick. Mick and Tucker's friendship was destroyed as a result. Tucker right after and never looked back. Maggie and Mick got married.
Story: Years later, Mick is dead and Maggie is traveling to Australia to keep a promise she made to her husband. Maggie is going to tell Tucker the whole truth regarding the consequences of their one-night stand.
My thoughts: The book seemed to end abruptly. I also did not understand why Tucker's ex-wife was brought into the story. I actually felt sorry for her. She always knew that Tucker was in love with someone else. Also, I do not really care for love triangle stories. It irritates me if the hero or the heroine cannot make up their mind so in the process string someone along. Don't they know how they feel?
This book is about promises, farm life, grief, love, and some Aussies *giggles* (Texans too) This promising story will leave you laughing, and sated.
Reading this story, to me, felt like as if I was there, as well as feel a bit of a connection with the heroine Maggie (I'm from Texas and live in the country too) and reading parts about country life, country music, and not to mention a bit of karaoke *laughs* made it all the better (and fun) to read and understand the story. It was something I could relate to (a bunch of cowboys where I live) *swoons*
And I just have a soft spot for stories that take on a country setting. Just the vibe of it gets me all excited and automatically makes me think of hot sexy cowboys in tight Levi's or Ranglers...*cough* Tucker *cough*
(Shoot, just try to catch and lasso me up) *guffaws*
The love triangle was just over my head. Metaphorically speaking, especially in Tucker's case, since he fell for his best friend's girl. But although Maggie is a widow, they still felt Mick's presence in between them. This story reminded me of Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens because of the the love triangle, messed up childhood, and the Aussie thing.
The only thing that erked me was how Tucker was too much of a coward to voice out his feelings. He certainly took his time. COMMUNICATION is an important key to have in a relationship. Granted, a lot of baggage came with Maggie and it struck him pretty good, so it was a bit understandable. But regardless, still. He took freakin' forever to finally come forward with his love confession to Maggie. And to think he needed that big of a damn wake up call to finally come to his senses. *Huff* Shoot I was yelling at him myself, wanting to step in a slap him for mouthing off, and smack him in the forehead and yell everything Maggie was trying soo hard to tell him.
I did get territorial when Brenda, Tucker's ex-wife showed up *blush* I was already thinking in my head, "Oh, shit...this bitch." *guffaws* and when she was about to leave I was like, " Dang...can't hate her." And mentally sending a punch in Tucker's gut for being such a douche.
Overall this book was very promising and had me laughing my ass off, shedding a few tears, and when I was not yelling my head off at the main characters for doing something stupid, I was squealing in delight as things turned out alright.
