Nym has always loved the stars.

It's in her blood: Nym is a Medyssian, a shapeshifter born with an irresistible wanderlust for the universe's depths. But that was before a ravenous predator called the Shadow drove her kind to near-extinction and her family into hiding--accidentally leaving her behind in the process. Now, she wanders the ether with nothing but a map full of dead ends, desperate to find her way home.

Aren has always feared the stars.

He isn't just the youngest member of the Celestial Company--the most skilled crew of mercenaries to ever sail the void--he's the only son of its ruthless captain, drowning in both the weight of her legacy and his secret fear of space itself. And if he can't prove himself a worthy successor soon, he'll be left behind completely.

When Nym saves Aren from the wreckage of a mission gone wrong, he sees helping her as the perfect opportunity to prove he's more than a weak link. But the Shadow isn't the only predator lurking in the deep, Nym is hiding a power she can't resist or control, and the Celestial Company itself has secrets threatening to fracture it from the inside. And as the monsters hunting them multiply, Aren must make a choice: protect the only family he's ever known, or save the only person who's ever made him feel fearless.

Five stars all across the board!!

The characters? the plot? the vibes? all immaculate.

I had no idea what this book was about going into it (it was a book club pick) but it exceeded all expectations I had. The writing is so magical and has a way of making you feel like Nym and Aren’s feelings are your own. The story deals a lot with self acceptance and facing your fears in such a gentle way, it’s hard to put the book down honestly. I also loved seeing the growth in both main characters and the few side characters we get to interact with throughout the story. I don’r want to say more because of spoilers but definitely a beautiful story with excellent and mystical prose.

I looked forward to this novel for the past 5 years and it did not disappoint in the slightest, in fact, it exceeded all of my expectations.

An Infinite Pull is a Treasure Planet inspired retelling of the Little Mermaid and it's sheer and utter perfection in my eyes. Aren, a techy son of the fiercest captain in the galaxy and Nym, a lovely and curious creature of deep space who just wishes to find her family.
It weaves a story of belonging with adventure, mystery, love, and hope. It takes the main characters' insecurities and turns them into their greatest strengths. It leaves you with the greatest feeling of equal parts whimsy, yearning, and complete contentment at the end of their journey together.

The writing was completely lovely, poetic, and allowed a deep look into the characters and who they truly were, while it also being a reflection of the human soul and what most of us spend our lives longing for: belonging.
The numerous twists and turns this novel had kept me on my toes and I was just floored at how the author drew me in so thoroughly. I kept being surprised in the best ways possible because once I thought I had something figured out, no I didn't.
This novel is so heart wrenchingly beautiful. And I guarantee you will fall in love with Aren and Nym and if you don't then I can't help you.

I picked this book up at Booknet Fest in May. Not gonna lie, I got it for the cover art. It was hand-drawn, had a great color scheme, and was clearly made with love. After learning it was a 'Little Mermaid' retelling, I was curious. The most popular retellings these days are Persephone and Hades, or Beauty and the Beast, so this was a breath of fresh air.

This book is a mash-up of The Little Mermaid and Treasure Planet where the main duo is Ariel and Hiccup Haddock III.

And that's where the references end because everything else is a wonderful, new, twisty tale about two teens(?) making do with what they've got in an attempt to do the impossible. For Nym, it's trying to find her homeworld that doesn't want to be found, and for Aren, it's trying to meet his mother's expectations despite his low self-esteem and fear of space.

Unfortunately, Nym has nothing to go on and none of Aren's inventions ever seem to work. But when both give one final hail mary to reach their dreams, they collide with each other instead.

I love the characters in this book, and not just the main characters either. Everyone has a fun personality, a compelling story, and a unique dynamic with everyone else. I also think it's wonderful to show the romance between Nym and Aren without using romantic cliches to push it. The two don't even kiss or say the word 'love' at all, but it's still very apparent. I just appreciate the fact that in a literary world where everyone is obsessed with smut, and lust, and every shred of spice, their relationship focuses on emotional support, talking to each other and helping one another and not doing the dumb third act break-up.

Granted, I think this book might be intended for younger audiences, but that doesn't diminish this book's quality. I absolutely adored this book and I give it a 5/5.

“I’ve become skeptical of the unwritten rule that just because a boy and girl appear in the same feature, a romance must ensue. Rather, I want to portray a slightly different relationship, one where the two mutually inspire each other to live - if I’m able to, then perhaps I’ll be closer to portraying a true expression of love.” - Hayao Miyazaki

This quote came to mind as I read this book. Getting to know our main characters, Aren and Nym, and seeing them grow and change through the course of the book felt so real, like we ourselves grow and change because of our relationships with others.

The space imagery is fantastic and Taylor Simonds paints a colorful and vivid picture in every scene, where I could watch it play out in my head. I wholeheartedly recommend this book!

First off, I would commit many crimes for Nym. I will kill for her. I will steal for her. I would DIE for her.

Anyways.

This book grabbed me from the first few chapters, which were nothing but space fighting drama that had me on the edge of my seat, and I knew it was going to be a fun ride.

Every time I thought I had a serious plot point figured out, a curve ball would be thrown my way, and I loved every moment of it. Once the plot was laid out and the drama unfolded though! Oh man. What a ride.

I loved everything about this book. It played out just like a movie in every way I wanted it to. So few books rarely do that for me, but this was perfect. A book just as beautiful as its cover art. And wow what a cover! It perfectly captures everything about this that I loved.

If you want a soft cinnamon roll son of a pirate bounty hunter, who quite frankly has lived through enough trauma, who almost dies in space but gets saved by a half lady half jelly fish mermaid type person? Oh buddy is this the story for you.

There are few things in this universe of ours that are as satisfying as a well told story, and you’ll find a perfect one in “An Infinite Pull.” Drawing vibrant inspiration from some truly excellent sources (Treasure Planet, The Little Mermaid, Castle in the Sky), Taylor Simonds has crafted a fairy tale of her own that will live deep in my heart for a very long time.
I absolutely fell in love with Aren and Nym. Told from both Aren and Nym’s perspectives in alternating chapters, both have a unique voice and clear personalities that come through on the page. Aren is charming, intelligent, and clever; while Nym is curious, hopeful, and confident. Captain Valyra, Felix, Cas, and the crew of the Starsaviour are so fun and interesting and I want to live on that ship.
The way this book was set in the deep darkness of space but also ignored some of the rules of physics added to the story, rather than subtracted from the realism. It helped emphasize the fairy-tale-ness of it all, and also allowed for real stakes and danger when necessary.
I’m going to keep this review spoiler free, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the myriad of twists and turns Taylor incorporated into her storytelling. I went into this knowing that it was inspired by very specific stories and still managed to be surprised by the way the bones of those stories were woven into the plot. Truly excellent.
The last thing I want to mention is the love with which this book was written. If you look behind the words and behind the characters, you see exactly how much Taylor adores the concepts and stories that inspired her. These are part of the core of who she is and it’s so clear how much she loves what she gets to share with her readers.
You will laugh, you will cry, and you will cheer. You will fall in love, you will fall apart.
Enjoy.

OBSESSED! I loved every character and this novel was so beautifully written. I’m sad it’s over, and can’t live in the world anymore. I HIGHLY recommend this book! Almost bought me to tears!
World building-fantastic! and could vision everything in my head!
Characters- Were on point and I loved every one of them. But of course Nym was my favorite! Dual pov in both mmc and fmc’s perspective on the same event. The antagonist, well she was definitely the “sneaky evil controlling one,” but played it well!
Plot-The plot was plotting!
Underlying theme(favorite quote!)- “We all have our shadows-the ones we cast, and the ones we stand in.”
When can I go back into this world!? 😍

Other favorite quote-
“All of my life I’ve been afraid, of the void, of my mother. Of the person I might become. Don’t you get it? Nothing could ever make me afraid of you. Nothing.”-Aren speaking to Nym

Periodically I return to this book listing in hopes that Simonds is writing a sequel like it, because I've never read anything like it. That may be a reflection on my reduced YA intake as I've aged, but Simonds really did achieve a highly specific aesthetic.

I very rarely buy brand new books, but as soon as I read the premise I knew I had to, for ten year old me. It's Treasure Planet, it's The Little Mermaid, it's a bit Doctor Who, it's a bit Tangled. I bought a copy and forced myself to only read a chapter a night to make it last longer. The difficultly for me being the chapters are quite short to give it a very fast, theatrical pace, so some nights I only got a few more pages, but there we are. I enjoyed reading it this way, and having it for a month or so, but it demands to be devoured in just a few hours, that's probably truer to Simonds intent.

I haven't yet seen it appear on one of those tumblr lists of ace representation YA book recs, so at some point I need to advocate for it in someone's askbox. It hits all the beats of a Disney Renaissance/Millenium movie, without veering into comphet or amatonormativity, which is impressive, and I know this book is going to mean the world to a younger queer reader.

Stunning cover, the book was lovely to hold, it will be staying in my collection indefinitely.

Pssst. Hey kid. You like The Little Mermaid? You like Treasure Planet? You ever had dreams about swimming in space? You ever dream up wild inventions to help with your wild adventures? You like fairy tales? You worried about letting your parents down, or maybe not being good enough somehow?

Me too.

"An Infinite Pull" by Taylor Simonds is a sonorous, lovingly told story of two people who don't fit in: Aren, who can't fit in because of his fear of deep space, adventure, and bloodshed; and Nym who can't fit in because her planet is missing. Not missing - hidden. Masked and camouflaged away from the rest of the universe to defend itself against a hungering adversary called The Shadow. Driven by a need to know the truth about his father, Aren sets out to find answers and Nym happens to save him from certain death. Nym wants nothing more than to flee the Shadow and return home to her planet and family, if only she knew where to find them. Aren might have an invention to help with that... but there are other secrets that unfold within the story that reveal more monstrous deeds than either Nym or Aren could possibly imagine.

Treasure Planet meets Tangled. Space Mermaids!!!!

I've read Taylor's first book, Collateral Damage, and fell in love with her writing style. Any book that has her name on it is immediately on my must-read list.

An Infinite Pull was so unique and beautiful. The author's ability to world build left me truly in another world and in awe. It was both whimsical and enchanting. This book will leave a mark on my heart, and the story itself was so well done. I can not recommend this story enough guys! Treat yourself to an amazing experience ✨️

5 stars! This book was so immersive, thrilling, and magical. Simonds writes in such an imaginative way that pulled me into the story with its metaphors and lyricism. I really connected with the characters who were inspiring in their growth throughout the story and formed such a beautiful, heartwarming bond.

If you love fantasy, action, plot twists, and found family, read An Infinite Pull!!! Also that cover is so gorgeous and looks amazing on my bookshelf🤩

4.5 rounded up

This was a touching, yet at time sad, story of searching for home. I loved how the two main characters connected with each other over their share desire to find stability and where they belonged.

It's written very beautifully, but I will say that a good bit of it is hard to picture, and could have used more overarching descriptions to help set the scenes. But what I could picture was beautiful and illustrative.

I would classify this as a YA sci-fi. It is about connection and belonging, but is not a romance (not that it needed to be).

”Am I worth it?” That’s the question that actually matters. Is my belief that this is wrong, all wrong, with sacrificing every stitch that binds me into my place in this world?

Yes.

A fantastical tale nestled within the backdrop of a beautiful sci-fi aesthetic, An Infinite Pull follows Aren—the son of the most ruthless and noteworthy captain of the universe—an inventor who is suffocating under the weight his family’s legacy, who fears the very void of space itself—and Nym, a shapeshifting Medyssian who has been lost to the currents of the ether and trying to find her way home. Through a series of harrowing events, these two lost souls meet. As they try to help each other find where they belong, threatening secrets force them to confront the past, themselves, and the choices they must make.

I had this story described to me as a mixture of Treasure Planet and The Little Mermaid, which already had me hyped, but then I read it and omigosh, I felt like it was written just for me??

As accurate as that comparison to Treasure Planet and The Little Mermaid is, it doesn’t prepare you for the moment the story veers from being the fairytale-esque feeling that we’re lulled into in the beginning to the whiplash that is the secrets that are revealed, slowly, one by one. They don’t come out of nowhere, and they sensibly build on each other in a way that leaves you reeling from wondering who’s right? Who’s wrong? Who should you believe? What can you believe? (Don’t get me started on the concept of illusions as a core plot point and the themes of perceived realities and beliefs fuels each character! And I must say, I absolutely appreciated the family angst happening as well. That was specifically for me ^.^) I found it a very satisfying and engaging fairytale that makes you stop and think. And those kinds of stories are the ones I love.

Thanks to this story, I now know what it’s like to have emotional whiplash from reading the phrases: ”Come out, come away. I’ll find you.” 🙏🏼

Very good young adult book that is described as The Little Mermaid, but in space.

Aren and Nym are well fleshed out. Both are trying to find their place in the world, Aren among his crew, Nym trying to find her home. The main antagonist, the Shadow, was sufficiently creepy and terrifying when they first encountered it. That being said, once the full spectrum of Nym's powers came to light, ie being able to turn into the shadow, it wasn't a shock to find out that the shadow was also a Medyssian like Nym.

What surprised me was that the Celestial Company, or more importantly, Aren's mother was the actual shadow that the stories were based on. Wasn't sure how I felt about that twist because the legend of the Shadow felt like it spanned centuries, if not more. Instead, we find out that Aren's mother is essentially a terminator and viciously hunted down Medyssians to the point they made her a legend, in only the span of around 25 years.

That being said, this was an excellent read. Not really a romance, more like a found family type relationship between Aren and Nym. Yeah, I could see them getting together as they adventure in space, but at the point of the story's end, they feel like friends who are ride or die for each other.

"An Infinite Pull" is the perfect title for this book because, let me tell you, it pulled me in so well that I couldn't put it down! The story just grabs you, and before you know it, you're deep into this amazing world Taylor Simonds has created.

Simonds' prose is not only beautiful but also incredibly easy to follow. Even though the world she gives us is a bit unconventional, her descriptions are so vivid and clear that I had no trouble picturing everything in my head. It all felt so real, which is pretty impressive for a standalone fantasy.

The chapters are short, but each one has a purpose and keeps you hooked the whole way through. There's never a dull moment.

The characters are also well fleshed out, especially the two main leads. They were a joy to follow, and I was rooting for them from start to finish.

If you're looking for a charming galactic adventure that keeps you entertained from beginning to end without the need for two supplementary sequels, you need to check out An Infinite Pull!

My first read from a self published writer! I was excited when I saw the cover and read the description and overall did enjoy it. It has taken me 5 months to finish the book though, for some reason I kept putting it down and read other books in the middle. The writing is beautiful but I did find myself confused on where scenes were happening and imagining what was going on. Maybe it was a problem on my end? There was a scene where Aren was trying to take a bath to clean off, I imagined him struggling to make the decision to get into the water and suddenly I realized he had been in the tub the entire time. I had to flip back and reread pages multiple times because things like that kept happening when I read through the story. There were several times where that happened and I just would put the book down and give up for a while. I also am worried I missed something important about Aren’s dad… could just be a me thing though.

Overall I really enjoyed it and am delighted I found a signed copy at my local bookstore.

An Infinite Pull is an enchanting book that feels like a daydream. It is a simple, easygoing book that sparks connection between the two main characters. The grounding and introduction took a while, and I did not understand descriptive parts about the ship and what the characters were doing on the ship, but those parts did not add to the story so it was fine. The romance was the silent type- longing in the air, but never directly spoken. However, they could also just be considered best friends. According to the book, the main characters are both 16 or 17, but they felt more like 14 or 15. I reccomend it if you want to believe in dreams again.

I picked this book up at an indie bookstore in Orlando @authenticbooks when I was there to visit earlier in the year. This was a featured local author and the book is just gorgeous. The content of the book is gorgeous too, the descriptions of their lives in space and the creatures are immersive and fantastical. The emotions and character arcs are intense. But it read to me as too YA for where I am in my life. I could see this being a core memory read if I had read it in high school. I'm not sure why I didn't connect with it as deeply as I know I would have. The writing was beautiful, it maybe just needed another edit to bring some punch to it? I'm not sure what it was missing but it was missing something for me personally.

It was a genuinely beautiful book to read! Very poetic, and the first book I read in a while that had the rare relationship where a girl and a boy can exist together without having a romantic relationship> Strongly recommend if you like to read retellings, specifically of The Little Mermaid and Treasure Planet. Very emotional ending and I loved it so much! Only fault is that the beautiful descriptions can get a bit boring to read after a while.
