A Murder In The Neighborhood is a gripping suburban thriller that delivers plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on edge. The murder of Robert Abernathy shakes the seemingly perfect community of Brookhaven to its core, unraveling dark secrets and hidden tensions among its residents.

The novel's strength lies in its intricate plot and the palpable tension that builds as Rose Rivera, the central character, finds herself accused of the crime. Her struggle to clear her name amidst mounting suspicion and hostility from her neighbors is compelling, and the suspense is maintained effectively throughout the story.

However, the book has its drawbacks. The characters, while interesting, often feel somewhat stereotypical and lack depth. Rose's strained marriage and the pressure from her neighbors could have been explored more thoroughly to add emotional weight to her predicament. Additionally, the climax, while satisfying in its reveal, feels a bit rushed and leaves some plot threads unresolved.

Overall, A Murder In The Neighborhood is an enjoyable read for fans of suburban thrillers, offering a dark and suspenseful portrayal of a community in turmoil. Despite its flaws, the book keeps you guessing until the very end and is worth a read if you enjoy a good mystery.

5/5 Stars

This book to me was easily a five star read because it had me flying through the pages. My feelings were very conflicted on who to like and who to hate. Most of the characters were unlikable. 😂 However, some of them had redeeming qualities about them. This book has an intricate plot of deception, drama, friendships, trauma and is intriguing from the first word till the last. This book bounces from present tense to past tense. But it’s very easy to follow and keep track of who is who. If you’re looking for an action packed, fast paced book that gives you desperate housewives vibes, with secrets, and busy bodies everywhere this is the book for you.

***I received a free Kindle copy via Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review. ***

I have to pull the plug on this. I just can't keep torturing myself. I can say with absolute certainty that I 100% DNGAF who killed Robert Abernathy, or why. Page 51 is the random stopping point for me.

It's the writing style that is the deal breaker for me, as the two different timelines are pointless. The author breaks down the story into a "then" and "now" style format, but they feel the same. When we are "then", Rosa mentions things yet to happen or how things that are going to happen haven't yet changed things, but will. The sheer number of times that Robert is mentioned as being dead, or the fact that he is going to be dead, going to die, did die, is frustrating. The story just keeps going in circles.

Daisy, Rosa, Magnolia, we have a flower themed name game happening.
Tommy, Teddy, Thalia. Maria and Miracle. All matchy-match name sets for interconnected people.
There are way too many people for the author not to slow down, introduce the neighborhood during a party and give the reader something to hang on to, in terms of getting to know everyone. It's so frustrating when a writer just starts tossing out multiple names with no real introduction. Instead, we are thrown in, during some "action" and then slung back out into "before", with no feel of who a single character is or why I should care about their involvement with the overall storyline.

The story needs an editor and an overhaul. Chapter 2 feels like it was 1, then someone decided the book needed a stinger opener, so it was tacked on. Rosa rambles about everything and nothing, all at the same time, repeating herself, and jumping around in time, while casually mentioning Magnolia, here and there. Imm assuming the name dropping was to hook the reader and keep them reading, but at this point, almost a month, of only getting 50 pages read, I don't care what the big twist is that surrounds these cardboard cut-out, flat AF, uninteresting characters or the big reveal. I feel comfortable jumping to the conclusion that Magnolia is/was Rosa's kid who is dead (actually or just assumed) or given away after some awful event.

I feel like all the high stars are from the author giving away books and not the actual story or writing. I won this and feel like I deserve a refund. 😣 Possibly a great premise to a story but terrible execution.

This is my first and last book by this author. I received this as an eArc and was looking forward to it. Unfortunately, just from reading the first few chapters, I knew the writing style wasn't for me. It felt somehow both overdone and ameturish at the same time. The storyline was also a bit far-fetched for me as well.

First, I want to thank the author, Spencer Guerrero for letting me read this story. I truly enjoyed all the twists and turns. I definitely had a hard time putting the ebook down; once I truly got into it. This book also kept me up late because I wanted to know how it ended. I can't wait for others to get their hands on this story! I hope they enjoy it as much as I did!

4.75 roundee up. This was a cross between Desperate Housewives and Mean Girls! Rose is living a boring upper middle-class existence where she conforms to the expectations of the neighbourhood. That is until she becomes the local pariah, blamed for a murder she did not commit. Soon, her friends and community turn against her. Rose knows she didn't kill anyone...so who did?

I liked the pacing of this book and the dynamics of the different characters. They were caricatures of people we have all met at one time or another, but it worked well in the context of this story. The women were just so catty and high school level mean!  I found the plot engaging, and it was an interesting take on a murder mystery. The story unfolds from multiple pov, but the main focus is on Rose now and in the past. It had lots of twists and turns, and lots of people had a motive. It does all come together nicely in the end in a satisfying way.

With thanks to the author for providing a copy of the book. This is my honest opinion, which I'm leaving voluntarily.

Rich neighbourhood. Rich people. Rich drama. And all those come with secrets. Secrets that should go to the grave but rich drama equals rich speculations and rumours. So those secrets may not stay as secret as they should.

What is true? What is not? Who do you believe and who do you not believe?

This was a fast pace thriller that made me wonder What is going on!! Who done it!???

There’s a lot people at the beginning but they’re well introduced and easy to remember who is who.

Dual POV, first person.
TW of pregnancy loss.
And obviously TW for violent scenes - it is a murder mystery novel after all!

I really enjoyed it and would recommend it! I can’t wait to read his other novels.

Thank you Spencer for the ARC!

This was my first book by Spencer Guerrero. I thought the writing style was easy to follow and very detailed throughout the story line. I loved all the twists and turns that I wasn't able to actually guess who the killer was. I loved the drug out rich town drama and gossip. The story is full of action and backstabbing neighbors. I highly recommend this book the ending was a twist and outcome I didn't expect at all.

It has been a week since I finished this book and I can't quit thinking about how much I enjoyed reading it. This book kept me turning the pages and wanting to stay home from work to keep reading it.

This book has everything I expected from a thriller and then some. I absolutely loved the way the author created the characters and let all their catty, backstabbing ways come out on the page. It was almost like watching some of my favorite prime-time soap opera dramas from the 80s and I loved every second of it!

There were lots of twists and turns in the story that kept me guessing who the murderer was throughout the story. The pace of the story was excellent too. It was so easy to keep reading "just one more chapter" way past my bedtime.

This was my first book by this author and it definitely not be my last! I am looking forward to reading more of his work and seeing what characters and stories he comes up with.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion which I have given.

A quick read. While reading the prologue I found the writing overly descriptive and choppy with a stilted dialogue. Luckily, it gets better but the dialogue was still lacking. The storyline was all over the place and the continued juvenile name calling was too much. Sadly disappointed because I loved My Son is a Murderer.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this advanced copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

In "A Murder in the Neighborhood," Spencer Guerrero delivers a gripping and intensely suspenseful narrative that takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster through the seemingly peaceful residential community. The story kicks off with Rose Rivera's life taking a dramatic turn following a chilling murder that disrupts the tranquility of her neighborhood. Just after a benign conversation with her neighbor, Robert Abernathy, Rose hears a disturbing argument that compels her to investigate. As she does, gunfire rings through the air. What she finds is horrifying: Robert has been killed, and his wife, Daisy, is beside his lifeless body. This moment sets the stage for a riveting thriller that keeps readers on edge from start to finish.
The suburban setting of "A Murder in the Neighborhood" is masterfully depicted, creating a stark contrast between the quiet, idyllic neighborhood and the dark, violent events that unfold. Spencer Guerrero skillfully employs this backdrop to heighten the tension and underscore the unexpected nature of the crimes. The tight-knit community's reaction is both realistic and chilling, as suspicion quickly falls on Rose. The depiction of how quickly friendships and trust can erode in the face of fear and uncertainty adds a layer of psychological complexity to the narrative.
Rose Rivera is a well-crafted protagonist whose journey is both compelling and heart-wrenching. Her determination to clear her name and uncover the truth is the driving force of the plot. As Rose delves deeper into the investigation, she unearths a web of secrets that paints a grim picture of her community. Spencer Guerrero does an excellent job of portraying Rose's resilience and vulnerability, making her a character with whom readers can easily empathize. Her relationship with her husband, Thomas, adds an additional layer of tension, as his doubts about her innocence strain their already fragile marriage.
The plot of "A Murder in the Neighborhood" is a labyrinth of twists and turns that keeps readers guessing until the very end. Spencer Guerrero expertly weaves together elements of drugs, violence, gang affiliations, and even terrorism, creating a complex narrative that never feels overburdened. Each revelation brings Rose closer to the truth, but also closer to danger, as she navigates a treacherous path filled with deceit and betrayal. The pacing is impeccable, with the tension building steadily, ensuring that readers remain engaged throughout.
One of the standout aspects of the book is its exploration of the themes of trust and betrayal. Spencer Guerrero delves into how quickly suspicion can spread and how easily relationships can be shattered by doubt. The portrayal of the community's transformation from a haven of support to a hotbed of hostility is both poignant and thought-provoking. This thematic depth elevates "A Murder in the Neighborhood" beyond a simple thriller, offering readers a nuanced examination of human nature and the impact of fear.
In conclusion, "A Murder in the Neighborhood" is a masterfully crafted thriller that combines a suspenseful plot with rich character development and thematic depth. Spencer Guerrero’s ability to create a sense of unease and maintain high tension throughout the narrative makes this book a standout in the genre. Rose Rivera's journey to uncover the truth is both gripping and emotionally resonant, ensuring that readers will be invested in her story from beginning to end. This is a must-read for fans of suspense who appreciate a well-told, multifaceted tale.

Mean women act out in as drug-violence comes to small town - 4 stars

Rose Rivera and her husband Thomas reside in Brookhaven. Most of the book is Rose's story. Brookhaven is an upscale community with most of the men bringing home a good wage. Most families belong to the close by country club. Daisy Abernathy is the president of the country club. Daisy will soon be widow.

If you have the stomach for scheming stay-at-home women who spend their days at a country club being catty, this novel is for you. The small-town mentality has next door neighbors who watch each other; the wealthiest man with the largest house is murdered. There is plenty of indirection and innuendo. In the end, the public truth is different than what was claimed in both the newspaper and the police blotter.

The neighborhood children mix well. Husbands are too busy with their lives to care about their families. The wives drink, gossip, and plot. Sometimes it is just boredom that leads to cunning verbal cuts. There are real bruises on the children and classic infidelities. On the surface, everything is forgiven after a drink or two.

After the brutal murder, the police don't seem to follow up looking for video from doorbells and security systems. The rumor mill takes over. Unsigned text messages claim one woman is the obvious killer. Texts also claim failing marriages, seem to try to promote ethnic-based discord. Rumors fly. The people with the largest network repeat their opinions. Video clips that the police never saw are widely distributed.

Two weeks after the original murder, an armed gang of tattooed men shoot up the local supermarket killing several people. The carnage is cleaned up but the police seem ineffective. A neighborhood association run by the woman whose husband was murdered; she claims one woman is responsible for her husband's murder. Daisy chairs meetings each of which features accusations, shouting, and swearing. Fist fights break out.

When you finish, you will know more than the official story. You will have a more complete understanding of the murders and causes. You might change your mind (as I did) about the innocence of the woman (Rose) whose public trials are told firsthand throughout the book. The story is similar to a soap opera featuring unpleasant characters.

📚A Murder in the Neighbourhood
✍️Spencer Guerrero
1⭐️

A book revolving around a murder, that doesn’t focus on the murder or the victim itself but Rosa, who overhears the murder of her neighbour and is then accused herself. The plot focuses on Rosa’s life and experiences, as a way, I thought, of convincing the reader of Rosa’s innocence. Unfortunately this didn’t really work as I didn’t think Rosa was overly pleasant and rather than exonerate herself, there were times when I wouldn’t have been surprised if she had murdered Robert. The perspective then changes to Robert, the murder victim and he is an equally unpleasant character. For example, he refers to his wife and her family as “uneducated swamp trash”. Incredibly simplistically with short sentences, and some phrases which screamed chatGPT / AI. Stilted, basic and cringeworthy dialogue
The dialogue was stilted, basic and unfortunately cringeworthy. The conversations between Rose and her husband and the authors description of a passionate marriage, suggested to me that the author has never been married. The characters were all very similar, a formerly poor wife with a successful husband and 2.4 children. The author also has a strange liking for flora based names for characters. The non-chronological timeline was flawed as there were times when, in situations prior to the murder, the murder is mentioned! I did try to read the book thinking that Rosa was reflecting on her life with knowledge of the murder, but I think that was me trying to be constructive and giving the author more credit and that wasn’t intentional. Unfortunately a murder in the neighbourhood was hugely disappointing considering the following the author seems to have on social media. Unfortunately I won’t be reading anything else.

Spencer Guerrero's *A Murder in the Neighborhood* is a gripping psychological thriller that takes readers deep into the secrets and lies of a seemingly perfect suburban community. Set in the quiet town of Brookhaven, the novel begins with the shocking murder of Robert Abernathy, a well-liked neighbor and family man. As the investigation unfolds, the idyllic façade of the neighborhood begins to crack, revealing a web of deceit, betrayal, and hidden motives.

Guerrero masterfully builds suspense throughout the novel, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they try to piece together the truth. The characters are complex and well-drawn, each with their own secrets and flaws that make them both relatable and suspicious. Guerrero's ability to make every character a potential suspect adds to the novel's tension, creating an atmosphere of paranoia that permeates the story.

The pacing is expertly handled, with just the right balance of action, dialogue, and introspection. Guerrero slowly peels back the layers of the mystery, revealing new twists and turns at every corner. The reader is kept guessing until the very end, and when the truth is finally revealed, it is both shocking and satisfying.

In summary, *A Murder in the Neighborhood* is a compelling and intense thriller that will appeal to fans of psychological suspense. Spencer Guerrero has crafted a novel that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys delving into the darker aspects of human nature.

I picked up ‘A Murder in the Neighborhood’ expecting a classic thriller—but what I got was so much more. Set in a seemingly close-knit community, the story slowly peels back the layers of suburban perfection to reveal something far darker. Every household has its secrets, and as the plot unfolds, it feels like watching a suspenseful movie—but in a world that feels eerily real.
What really hooked me was how easy it was to read, yet how intense the emotional ride became. Each chapter pulled me deeper, and I found myself racing through the pages, desperate to uncover the truth. The twists? Completely unexpected. The way the main character manipulates the narrative to seek justice is brilliant!
But what truly stayed with me was the character at the centre of it all—the one accused of the unthinkable. Guerrero paints them with such complexity that I found myself torn between suspicion and sympathy. You’re never quite sure if they’re a victim, a villain, or something in between. Their quiet desperation, the way they carry the weight of judgment from a community that once embraced them—it’s heartbreaking. And yet, there’s a strength in their silence, a fire in their pursuit of truth that made me root for them, even when I wasn’t sure I should.
By the end, I couldn’t help but look around my own neighborhood and wonder: What stories are hidden behind those closed doors? This book doesn’t just entertain—it lingers. It makes you think.
If you’re into psychological thrillers with a slow-burn intensity and a payoff that leaves you questioning everything, this one’s worth adding to your list.

Okay yall. First off you get reeled in by suspicion from the beginning. Then the story goes on and you’re like ok you’re getting some background and then bam!!!! back all in.!! Rose’s nephew had me cracking up, I also love the fact that he wrote this book straight out of real life conversations that you would have with someone you know. CURSE WORDS, AND ALL! SO IF YOU DON’T LIKE CUSSING MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU.

Rose is caught in the middle of accusation for murder the neighbor Robert by his wife and some of her friends. Only one person believes that she didn’t do it. She gets super aggravated by the fact that her own husband is not having her back. There’s a lot of twist in turns and a lot more secrets, lies, and murder. I swear I felt like I was sucked into a lifetime movie.

I love the fact that every time I thought I knew who it was it was a straight nope it was a really good read. This book is also hilarious at the same time. Some of the characters will have you cracking up and I will never forget handy Henrietta Spencer!!! That name is stuck in my head 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thank you, @spencergauthor for allowing me to read this ! Now to catch up on your other books!! 📚 CHECK OUT TRIGGERS

This is a new to me author. The premise sounded interesting, and I am always looking for new stories to read. I really like the thriller genre.
Brookhaven is a community that seems to be close knit. The wives are "best friends", and the husbands play ball and some work together. We get a close insight to Rose, who seems to be the main character of the story since she is the one who is blamed for the murder of a fellow neighbor. Her husband seems to be elsewhere all the time and when he is home, he is not "there". You get the feeling this marriage is doomed. Thank goodness for Teddy who always supports his aunt, or you'd get the feeling she would have no one to back her up. Following the other characters, some seem to be happy even if not with their spouse. The plot just chugs along. If there were clues, I wasn't picking up on that. Each couple has their own secrets, and truth be told I didn't like any one of them in the whole community. Kudos to the author for making everyone unlikeable. To me that is a sign of good writing. I love to hate good characters. The book kept me wanting to read more and look forward to his next book.
Many thanks to the author for allowing me to read this different and new take on a thriller that shouldn't be missed!

This story reminded me too much of my own neighborhood, minus the murders. The whole HOA thing hit home and made this book very relatable to me. But holy crap, was everyone in this story absolutely psycho???

This story had a lot of characters and they each played an important role in the story line. But also, it wouldn't be a neighborhood if there wasn't a lot of characters. I didn't expect the twists and turns that this story took. It was a thrilling ride. I was hooked from the first page and binged it until I was done because I needed to know who did it!! The banter between them is also a little hilarious. I found myself cracking up one too many times at the snarky comments they'd make towards each other. There was sooo many secrets and betrayals between these neighbors. This was a fun suspenseful read. I absolutely love Spencers writing style. It's very down to earth and relatable... like two friends gossiping.

Oh this was some twist and turns for this murder mystery book. It was really good, it kind of reminds me of the TV series snapped. Because some of those stories were always about rich families and how someone in the family dies and a bunch of people are connected. Honestly Spencer did a good job with this book. I was on the edge because I was thinking the whole time who killed him, who really killed him.

But those last few chapters holy moly, I did not expect that many twists. That many turns or anything like that. Honestly at the end I was like okay we found out who the murderer is. And then that last chapter was like WHAT!?!! Honestly I loved it so much. I actually have two of his other books and I can't Wait to read them I just have to get the third one because this is so good! If you guys really love good murder mystery books that keep you on the edge trying to figure out who the actual killer is. Read this book. Read his other books too!!

Sometimes when you’re reading a book, you have a sense of what is going to happen. Those times did not happen with this book. There were twists and sometimes I swear the twists had twists. Even the Epilogue had a twist! I thought that was just to wrap up the story. Nope. The action started quickly and just kept going. I read this in little over a day. It would have been less but the boss insisted I go to work.
This is the fourth book I’ve read by this author and I think he can safely be added to my list of favorite authors. He has yet to disappoint me.
There is a bit at the beginning about triggers. If you have them, check that out. There is an act of domestic terrorism in the book. Living in a place that had an instance of one last year, I know that can be a sensitive topic for some.
I did receive this book as a free ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review.

WOOOOW. I know I said that Spencer Guerrero - Author last book was my favorite book of his, but this one is actually my favorite book he has written! 🤣

First off, I could literally picture every single thing that was going on. The detail was amazing!

Secondly, I haven’t read a book that actually made me LAUGH, but was also a thriller! This is the first book that’s actually made me laugh because some parts were hilarious!

Thirdly, I thought I knew who the k 🔪 l l e r was. HA! Funny right? Yeah I wasn’t close at all. This book kept me guessing! There were characters I hated, which is how you know a book is great!

Props to Spencer on another amazing book!! And I’m sooo thankful that I was able to be one of the select few to read it first before it came out!

Another fantastic book by Spencer Guerrero, he has quickly became one of my favorite authors.

It took me a few chapters to get into the story but once I did I couldn’t put it down. The cattiness of the neighborhood wife’s had me rolling my eyes, it’s exactly what I imagine when I think of a small neighborhood where everyone is each others business. Rose was everyone’s prime suspect in the murder and they had no problem ganging up on; she had no one on her side I felt so bad for her but man some of her come backs she had 💀 As I got to know the characters I kept changing who I thought was guilty and by the end I was half right. There were just enough twists that I didn’t want to put it down. I do suggest making a list of who everyone is and who they are married to though; at first I kept having to look back because I was getting myself confused.

A dramatic book that was full of dramatic characters, each having their own skeletons in their closets and a thirst for vengeance.

Rose is one of those characters that left you scratching your head thinking well maybe........

With the drama that unfolds after the murder of the most prominent man in the community, all eyes turn to Rose as being the prime suspect. Little does everyone else know that it goes so much deeper than a man being gunned down in his very own backyard.

The characters are all unhinged, flighty and just plain crazy in this book and I'm all here for it.

I thought I had it all figured out, but no, no I did not. There's so many plot twists in this book that it'll leave you having whiplash and not looking away from the train-wrecks that are about to do down. I'm definitely going to be reading more from Spencer!
