While I loved Hicks’ Plutarch translation of Julius Caesar and his comments in the Shakespeare portion, I wish Hicks would have kept to Plutarch’s intention by comparing Julius Caesar to Alexander the Great. Next time I teach through this book, this is what I plan to do: first semester, we will read Plutarch’s Julius Caesar by Hicks, and then second semester, we will read Arthur Clough’s edits of Dryden on Alexander the Great. We will then read Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar in our Shakespeare class.
