Once upon a time, a wondrous Kingdom flourished under the reign of its proud Fae king and his family. Though all was not as it seemed when poisonous schemes and utter betrayal lead to the downfall of an empire.
Sixteen years have since passed, the lands now lay in ruin and crime prevails despite the will of The Council. Their mission becomes clear… produce an heir and unite the Kingdom to restore its former glory.
And so becomes Heir Academy, the ultimate trial of strength and perseverance to forge the Kingdom’s savior. The strongest of all species converging on one place to claim a crown. My crown.
I don’t care what I have to do or who I have to take down. The rightful heir walks among them, and I will do everything in my power to sit on my throne.
The Kingdom of Ruin is book one in a planned four-book why choose romance series.
This book really doesn't help with my academy RH fixation because this just proves that the genre will hit every single time. oh the fun I had with this book (✿◡‿◡)
── .✦ academy setting? checked. ── .✦ enemies to lovers slowburn with the harem? checked. ── .✦ heroine with *powerful* secrets? checked. ── .✦ fantastic antagonists? checked. ── .✦ distinguishable MMCs? checked. ── .✦ kickass side characters? checked. ── .✦ badass fmc? also checked.
Honestly, ever since I started venturing into academy RH, I've never read so many excellent fantasy romance books before.
Another day of me wondering why books like this aren't more popular, it's just as good as some of the most popular romantasy books out there rn if I'm being honest.
My guess is because it's RH which is understandable. Most popular RH books that people know about really give this genre a bad rep. But fantasy RH is another thing entirely. emphasis on fantasy RH because contemporary RH sucks 99% of the time.
ANYWAYS, this book.
The love I have for the fmc, Addi, knows no bounds. She's so badass I want to be her friend so bad 😭 honestly I'm just happy that so far, she's done and said things I wanted her to. Every time people tried to bring her down or said rude shit to her, her badassery always came thru and her comebacks always hit the spot.
Addi is a fae. Fae used to rule the Floodborn kingdom until a tragedy brought the whole origin down. Now the Fae origin is seen as weak and useless, and pretty much everyone despises and looks down on them. Heir Academy is a newly formed academy intended to find a worthy heir to rule the Floodborn kingdom now that the Fae are no longer in power & The Council took over.
With a lot of things to prove and a shitload of secrets on her shoulders, Addi enrolled in Heir Academy with a mission.
Except everyone wants her gone. She's fae, so she shouldn't even be given the chance to compete for the throne. But does Addi give a fuck? Oh hell no 😌
The academy is divided by origins. Vampires are the most powerful, followed by the Wolves, Shifters, Mages, Humans, and lastly, the Fae.
Naturally, Addi caught the attention of the feared group in the academy. Raiden, the vampire who hates her guts. Cassian, the werewolf who just doesn't care about her really, or so he says. Kryll, the mysterious shifter, who is, mysterious, obviously. And Brody, the cocky, confident manwhore mage.
I'll let you find out on your own how their paths keep crossing. It's a wonderful experience if I do say so myself. The push and pull is fantastic. They all are in denial about each other it's so romantic lmaooooo
We have Cassian here who's so deep in denial I'm not sure he knows the way out.
⤷ I’m going to pretend it’s because she likes it as much as I do. Which I truly think she does. She just doesn’t want to admit it.
Uh huh yea sure buddy
⤷ I stretch out my leg, nudging Addi’s leg with my own.
When he wants attention so bad but doesn't want to actually start a conversation with her because they're supposed to hate each other so he settles with nudging her leg with his own.
⤷ When it’s clear they’re not going to let us in on their little joke, I find myself scrambling to think of something to make her look at me.
The patheticness of this whole thing is magnificent especially because on the outside he still tries to look like the scary wolf he is. But inside he just needs attention from his crush bc he's a softie 😌
Oh don't even forget Brody and his "I just want to get you out of my system"
⤷ “Addi.” It’s a plea, a fucking plea from my lips, and she offers me what I can only describe as a sympathetic smile in response.
Oh would you look at that. How the turns have tabled. Addi's men one by one turning into desperate lovesick fools for her is honestly what she deserves, you go girl
I'm excited to see how the romances develop, because they do get down and dirty a bit in this book but it's more of a *hate* fuck if I'm being honest so as of right now I'm not sure if they're gonna pledge loyalty to her anytime soon.......just the way I like it. Kill me with the slowburn 😌
This isn't without flaws though. The start was a liiiiitle slow. The reveal at the end could've been better. I guess because I knew it was coming so my expectations were a bit too high. It wasn't bad, I just expected more. And I think Addi acted a bit out of character there. I personally think it was not like her to *almost* lose control in that way.
But honestly at the end of the day do I really care? No I do not lmaoooo
Might not be perfect but 5 stars for the immaculate vibes (✿◡‿◡) and that one scene where Brody picked out food for her in advance, my act of service heart was CHEESIN
Some of Kean's stories are really good, but some of them miss the mark and The Kingdom of Ruin misses the mark.
Let's go over the basics of the story: Addi can't ever tell anyone who she is or what her background is; she is the rightful and royal heir to the kingdom; Addi often says "patience is my strength" or "I'm really good at what I do" and finally, constantly says "this is what I was born to do and no one will distract me."
I implore Kean to read J Bree's or Isla Davon's novels to learn how to write a proper and strong FMC. Addi succumbs to body betrayal syndrome; refusing to defend herself against getting man handled; not understanding that her strength comes from within; she's cocky, arrogant, a liar, uneducated and is angry all the time.
Kean failed to write a well developed and multi-dimensional FMC.
At 58% of the book, only one week has passed. At 92%, 3 weeks have passed.
Btw, Addi forgets EVERYTHING that she was told when she left for home and tells her origin story to the first person who asks.
The OW drama was boring and predictable; the MMC's who hate her for [insert dumb reason] was boring and predictable; and the beginning of the nicknames for the FMC was, you guessed it, predictable.
i picked this one up cuz it really sounded like my cup of tea, and it delivered! while nothing world-shatteringly amazing, i definitely get the feeling that this book and series will be one of my new comfort reads 🥹💗

this one did not feel like 470~ pages at all! i literally blinked and i'd already read 50 pages. hello?? am i just in a reading mood or is the kingdom of ruin laced with crack?! (probably the latter.)
while the plot was interesting and gripping, it wasn't taking itself too seriously, which i really love. it was quick, it remained intriguing throughout the entire book. the only thing i didn't really enjoy was how the end cut off like that. it definitely feels like an incomplete story - which, if it was always intended to be a series, works in its favour - but honestly i'm just fiending to get my hands on the next one (THANK YEWWW, KINDLE UNLIMITED 👅👅👅)
i honestly really liked how there were all these different supernatural beings thrown into the mix - it was chaotic yet never really confusing (other than the lack of distinction between shifters and mages sometimes).
the love interests weren't all that distinct at the start, but throughout the story, they began to display more in-depth personalities. i'm glad for that, but i do wish we got a little more backstory and personality DURING this book without having to wait for the next one :')

𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘪 𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘥 ⭑.ᐟ 🧝
i honestly really liked addi - she wasn't the thinly disguised pushover as so many fantasy FMCs are, and i'm excited to learn more about her backstory. i loved how she held her family so dear, and that ending??? omg i need to know more right this second?!
𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯 ⭑.ᐟ 🦇
honestly he was the one i was most intrigued by since the beginning. maybe i just have a thing for vampires (astarion... 👅) but i feel like he didn't get nearly enough attention in this book!! hopefully he gets more in the next 4 hehehe, i'm so excited to learn more about him 🥹💗
𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯 ⭑.ᐟ 🐺
whenever we're in his POV, he keeps saying stuff like 'alpha' and 'omega' and i'm honestly confused... is he an alpha or is addi? because he calls her 'my alpha' (erm...) and i dunno, from my slight level of experience in the rabbithole of omegaverse, doesn't that make him an omega? or are they two alphas together...?
you know what, i won't think about it too hard or i'll get a little TOO invested in omegaverse. but you do you, cassian!!
lowkey i did really like him, for all the making fun of him i just displayed. i liked how he was so quick to heal addi whenever anything happened (cough... head injury?) and i'm eager to learn more about his past and his family 🥹
𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘺 ⭑.ᐟ 🪄
lowkey he pissed me off so bad at first, but the sheer YEARNING this man possesses for our FMC even though they banged once... i'm kinda giggling kicking my feet 😭
the way he kept reminding addi "NOT OUT OF MY SYSTEM" i'm LAUGHINGGG BRO 🙏🙏🙏
𝘬𝘳𝘺𝘭𝘭 ⭑.ᐟ ✨
crazy to be named after a crustacean lowkey 🦐🦐🦐
lolll but in all seriousness, he was the least distinct love interest in my opinion. i did love that scene where he literally got catapulted out of addi's room by brody's ward 😭 i had a good laugh at that cuz i just imagined him as a bird flying out the door 🙏🙏

the writing wasn't anything special, but my LORD did it read so fast and easy. this is so good, i think, to get out of a slump. i don't know if all k.c. kean books read like this, but if they do, then i'm literally gonna read her whole backlist to escape the slump i feel coming on (NOOOO NOT JUST AFTER I FINISHED SCHOOL FOR THE YEAR NOOOO)
⋆。°✩ 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔
i picked this up literally just because i saw it and was like 'oh yeah, cool, let's do this' which NEVER happens? i always pre-plan my tbrs and what i'm gonna read in a certain month, so that was honestly so freeing and liberating (i live in a cage created by my own actions, of course)
can't wait to devour the rest of this series ASAP!!
"... you just have me so captivated that I would follow you to the pits of Hell without a care for anyone or anything but you.” ----------- I had zero expectations and needed to laugh, and this did exactly what I needed it to. ----------- It's that time again (where Idk what to read, so a RH fantasy it is)
This author has potential but her books tend to follow the same formula on plot that I usually DNF. Plot - Girl has goal, boys determined to chase her off (usually for dumb reason), mean girls, and before book 1 is done, guys enamoured with FMC cuz she shiny and pretty. It gets boring fast. This one is an improvement, I completed it and for the most part, I liked it.
However, I hate when the FMC tells herself to stay focused, thinks logical, looks like she will be a strong FMC, and in the next chapter succumbing to the MMCs due to lust. Why? Especially, when there hasn't been much conversation between them to justify that level of attraction or connection. Don't get me wrong, I love spice, just make it make sense, its giving fast burn and if that's the case, write 1 book.
Second issue, I love bully romances, I want to hate the MMCs, than I want the author to some how make me love them. Chefs kiss 😘 So, I was drawn to this book bc of that theme...Not getting it here. Technically, they are sort of mean but this ain't it. One is mean but for a stupid reason... he doesn't need to be distracted by his attraction 🙄, he just looks weak to not be able to control that, just saying. The other two are just followers and don't really care enough about her to bully her. Last one, doesn't bully her, he's just trying to get in her pants.
Lastly, we are to believe MMcs are baddies... cruel, ruthless, ambitious, and dangerous... please show me that in the next book cuz saw none of that in this one. That goes for the FMC, the men shouldn't be able to get over her all the dang time, definitely not for someone who has been training their whole life to take back their crown!
Third issue, the academy concept is falling flat for me. That needs some world building, development... Something! Its just reading filler space to me. The book description reads like this school is designed to weed out the weak by difficult competitive challenges so your left with one strong leader who will take the throne. Nah... more like charm school.
All in all, it follows the same formula as her other "academy" books but slightly better... Not sure if that's true, or maybe I was just determined to finish one of her books for once.
i liked the plot. it was very predictable and wattpadish but the plot was enough to make you keep going yk? but what really turned me off was the out of nowhere sexual harassment of fmc??? like what did cassian just cup her pussy after chapters of him hating her. then he claims that fmc actually rlly likes him and his squad and proceeds to molest her for confirmation? AND FMC PROCEEDS TO CONFIRM AND ENJOY IT TOO. her willingness to just fuck them over and over despite mmcs being COMPLETE assholes irks me. i had to take a breather from that scene bcs wtf is wrong w all of them.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Gosh darn it! I love a paranormal academy why choose and this one is done well.
FMC's in a why choose can make or break it for me and I really like Addi. She is strong and sassy but there is a kindness and empathy to her I love. As usual KC Kean gives us a great female friendship among a sea of mean girls. I do wish there was more than just Flora that didn't hate Addi because of the interest the guys show her. But in a genre where every other woman besides the FMC is a jealous, boy obsessed bully I will take what I can get.
The world is a bit confusing so I would advise not thinking too hard on it. How is there a society full of humans, mages, vampires, shifters, wolves and fae that live in villages and castles but our FMC binges The Office with her bestie? The fact that Dwight Schrute exists in this world is odd.
I can already tell I will be binging this series over the next few days.
“You have the alpha spirit in your bones. A strength and power that is undeniable. Either that, or you just have me so captivated that I would follow you to the pits of Hell without a care for anyone or anything but you.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️
I flew through this! I loved how easy it was to fall into this story. The world building was good but not overly complicated! The hidden identity of the FMC though this first book was super fun!
The cliffhanger and the end! OMG! 😱 I didn’t see that coming at all! So glad I can dive right into book two!
*Reverse Harem *Paranormal *Multi-PoV *Academy Setting *Crown Trials *Hidden Identity *Mixed ‘species’ *Building Harem (4?) *Slow Burn *1/4 Favourite KC PNR so far As much as I’ve enjoyed her previous PNR series this one is my favourite! I love Addi she has certainly been through a lot (it’s hinted at throughout) but she’s so tough and is not afraid to stand up for what is right despite all the slurs and flack she is given 💪 I love how she just doesn’t give a toss either 😆 and her responses to the whole Cass situation especially made me laugh! Her men are all individual to say the least 😅 you have Raiden the grumpy vampire who thinks he’s the balls; Cass the wolf shifter who has his own issues and drags our FMC into the middle of it; cheeky chappie Brody the mage who doesn’t quit; and then Kyrll the shifter who’s a bit of an enigma! I have an inkling there may be more to the fae Professor too but not sure yet 🙃 The search for the heir ramps up and is supposed to bring the origins together but it’s doing nothing but create divides between them all especially against the fae…it certainly creates some drama between the students as well as Addi and these men🙈 Although I fear that cliffie may be a divide no one will be able to cross 😮😮
I am not sure if I will continue with this series. I like the FMC and I like her relationship with her family and her new friendships. I thought they were written well and I like that even if there is a tragic backstory there that it’s also well-balanced with positive things in her life. Also not a fan of the mean girl trope in academy rh so having other female friendships and relationships that are positive help to offset all the mean girl stuff that is in this book.
I just don’t really like the MMC‘s or how they treat the FMC and as such, I’m not super rooting for the romance, so it kind of makes me not want to read the rest of the series. Also not a fan of the dubious consent that is present in some of those interactions, it turned me off and made me uncomfortable. And I don’t like the OW trope SPOILER
and it really turned me off the MMC when he basically said he tried to screw other women all weekend to get the FMC out of his mind. That is just a huge turn off.
I fell into an academic rh rabbit hole over the last 2 months, but this one might have just pulled me out it.
Really tried to finish it, it was mildly entertaining, but the lack of world building and overall storyline made it too hard.
Also:
'Fae are as low as they get. You’re going to find yourself very, very, lonely here,” Mr. Vampire grinds out as he stares down at me with a sneer lifting his upper lip.'
'Oh, I can get lower,” I murmur, stepping closer to him this time. A move that makes his eyes widen just a fraction. Good, you know I’m not afraid of you. “When I drop to my knees for a dick worth submitting for, I can get way, way lower.’
This was 13% in people. Also the first conversation our FMC has with one of the MMCs. I should have stopped right there.
Two years ago, I called it quits on this author after completing the disastrous Emerson U series. Now, to be exact, two years and almost three months later, I decided to take a chance and I was surprised with how much her writing has changed! Way less cringe and so much for improved storytelling. I’m glad I decided to come back to this author because damn..the Featherstone series (albeit the cringe and the numerous plot holes) was a damn good debut series!! Seeing an author grow into a great writer is definitely something amazing to witness!
This has a much more YA feel to it than I expected. The writing doesn‘t flow, the world building is unimaginative, and the FMC is trying too hard. Also „heir acacemy“? We couldn‘t come up with something a little more… creative?
I have a feeling that this series is going to be my favorite fantasy story by KC so far! Who am I kidding? It already is, I was obsessed with everything I was reading and I didn’t want to put it down! This new urban fantasy world is filled a range of magical species and I cannot wait to find out more about the intricacies, hierarchies, and cultures unique to each one in more depth. But what I found really interesting was where the fae ranked among all these races. Having them at the bottom of the food chain, even below humans, is something I’ve never read before but really liked! It felt like a new perspective and I’m really curious to see if the redemption of the fae race will be a side plot of this story!
Now to discuss the characters. I found Addi to be quieter than KC’s previous FMCs but it’s only because she’s constantly taking in everything about her surroundings and what’s going on into consideration at all times. She is intelligent, self-aware, stabby when needed, and despite her intention to keep her head down she is unwilling to let others suffer unfairly and will always to come to their defense. I also like her complete aversion to anything remotely serious with the guys and how she constantly humbles them when she can’t avoid or ignore them. 🤣 I am very interested to learn more about her past, how she ended up where she did, and what the real limits of her powers are but the way she carries herself and genuinely wants what is best for the kingdom has made her an FMC I am more than excited to follow for this story.
Those boys also have a hold on my heart that I can’t seem to shake despite their jerk off behavior lol. If I’m being honest with myself I actually like when they’re being kind of awful because A) she calls them out on it repeatedly and it’s hilarious and B) watching both parties try to fight the attraction they have to each other via distrust and mutual dislike/tolerance really added to the sexual tension for me! Be warned my favorite guy changes on a daily basis so buckle up. We have our incorrigible flirt Brody who won’t take no for an answer but always has his heart in the right place despite all of the trouble he causes. Kryll who keeps to himself and can’t be bothered with reading emotions or social cues but there’s just something about his intense personality and blunt sense of humor that’s sucked me in. I’m very invested in learning more about his beast, I for one am hoping he’s a dragon because I’m super into those right now! 🤞🏻 Next we have Cassian, he definitely isolated himself for the first half of the book since he was clearly going through some stuff but once he decided to show up? HOT DANG I WAS INTO IT! It was like a flip had switched and I was so here for it, think boy obsessed with a sprinkle of touch her and be unalived! 🤌🏻 That leaves our king of grumps, Raiden. While he is a complete jerk 100% of the time I can’t help but be obsessed with watching him and Addi go at each other every time they interact. It’s super addicting and I have a feeling that when it finally comes time for them to give in to each other it’s going to be nothing short of explosive! 🔥
The ending had quite the cliffy but we should expect nothing less from this author and for once I’m not really sure how all the information that was brought to light will be received. It’s a coin flip at this point and while I want things to go one way I have a feeling that they’re going to go in the complete opposite direction! 😅 Welp, I wouldn’t be mad if the next book doubled down on the hate to love vibes! Plus I trust KC to get us where we want to be by the end ... even if that requires breaking our hearts along the way! But I have been absolutely feral for book two since I finished this one so seeing that it’s releasing in a little over a month has me feeling very spoiled! 🥰 And the title is only hyping me up more, The Reign of Blood? LET’S FREAKING GO! 😈
This book is so good, I’ve already read it twice. I love how strong and determined Addi is to make her way. I still feel like I don’t know everything there is to know and I’m so excited to figure it all out. Of course I love the Golden Retriever Brody; there’s no way not to. I am obsessed with Cassian though. Whew, he has me hooked. Because Raiden was always the jerk and Kryll was so quiet, I didn’t get that much from them, but I’m dying for more. Not going to lie that cliffy ending was brutal but the books so good I ain’t mad about it. Maybe I’ll read it again. Join me!
This was pretty entertaining. I liked all the different characters and how each have such a distinctly different personality. I think our main character’s story is very interesting and there is so much that can be done with her background moving forward. I already see started reading the next book because of the cliffhanger on this one, so excited moving forward. These books are really simple and easy, they have no complex topics and are really easy to breeze through.
Rh, no mm(so far), no ff, bully, fantasy, school, four, challenges, I actually liked it. While it's another school based drama, the main character doesn't seem as girly and dumb down as usual. While her fight with the she wolf was less impressive and lacking in over all , i still enjoyed it. Boys tripping over themselves to get in her pants but still being a-holes?
The plot had promise but the writing is very immature and the characters have nothing interesting going for them that sets them apart from any other academy reverse harem books
Badass FMC✅ Fantasy RH romance ✅ Interesting plot ✅ Different species of mates ✅
So much to love here and truly a captivating read. I knew from the get-go when I started this book it was going to be amazing just from the writing alone; and it really did not disappoint. I really love me a strong and brazen FMC and that’s exactly what Addi is which makes things so enjoyable. She holds her ground, has strong beliefs and is extremely determined to pursue her goal, which has nothing at all to do with men at the moment (that’s so refreshing). I love her sharp tongue and independent demeanor which allows her not to play the victim (I can’t stand FMCs like this). I have to say I’m thrilled with the way she’s been fleshed out thus far!
Although I would have preferred a bit more of a slow-burn I certainly didn’t expect sexy times in this book but at least it wasn’t with all the guys and she’s still at odds with the vamp which gives me something to bite into (pun intended)
I have a feeling the romance side of things is going to escalate quite a bit from here on out I just hope it’s done at a reasonable pace and doesn’t give me the insta-love ick
WAHHH! I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did! It’s been a while since I couldn’t put a book down. I just wanted to laze around all day and read. Really hoping this finally breaks my long-ass reading slump.
I’ve got a feeling this series might end up being another one of my favorites! I can’t believe I put it off for so long, thinking I wouldn’t be into it. I’m all in for Addi’s revenge era. Her sass and snark? I’m so here for it.
Also, some guys in her harem are giving me major mysterious vibes and ughhh I eat that shit up every time. And tell me why I’m getting student x professor trope energy?? 👀 I just hope we get more of him in the next book, he popped up early on but then totally disappeared from the later chapters.
Hoping it only gets better from here! 🤞🏻 4.5 ⭐
To waking up every day and choosing to live. To surviving the storm that takes aim on us. To being the baddest bitch you deserve to be. To making sure everyone gets some good dick. Even if it’s only on the pages. We can take care of the rest ourselves! (this dedication>>>)
I almost DNF'd at the start of this book. Addie was pulling at threads to make a story, it felt forced and long winded. There is something to be said for a story that happens organically, rather than someone actually looking for trouble. But.... About 40% in Addie grew on me, so there's that.
Considering the title of the book is Heir Academy it seems rather silly to think no one would put 2 and 2 together about who Addie is. The communities are segregated so right off the bat the Fae community should have been asking questions. How could she be the daughter of someone important that no one knows..?
The one thing that made this easier to read was that it's a slow burn, not Insta love. As readers we know where this is going but it's not going at light speed. The smut was actually not out of place.
Do I want to know more? Yes. Fingers crossed for book 2 because I have questions.
Okay so I enjoyed this. And I like Addi’s sassy comebacks, it made me like her as an FMC. And that cliffhanger at the end made me start book two immediately.
But there is something missing unfortunately. And I will be DNF’ing the second book I’m afraid.
There is almost no world building. And that is very much needed here because you get the classic fantasy feel but at the same time there is cars and phones etc. it didn’t make sense to me and I would have liked this to be explained better.
There is also a academy setting with the promise of trials and tests to weed out the weak, but we don’t get any of that in this first book.
I don’t really know how to explain it, because I really liked the premise of the book and I liked the FMC, but I think this could have been executed a lot better. I also think that the start of book two after that cliffhanger is kinda anticlimactic and it did not head in the direction I thought it would.
The book was slow to start and I was getting a little bored with the thinly veiled approach to Addi’s inner monologue not telling us specific things yet allowing the reader to infer what she means. I knew who she was from the start, the signs were all there even when she tried to hide it from the reader. The men we meet kind of bully but kind of don’t so I’m very interested to see where this goes. And ofc Cassian’s dad would know things. Saw that coming from a mile away though I expected Addi to be attacked. I definitely want to see where this is going now that the news has dropped.
