Could not stop reading it

The story opens with the adorable back story of how our dear couple meet and fall in love. It's fast and effortless. Yay!

In short order they are in London where Elizabeth must face a few nice people and plenty of not so nice ones. Not to mention the lies and stories that swirl around her husband's name, spun by the jealous.

Or are they?

When Darcy goes missing, not only do all of Elizabeth's fears come to the forefront, but so do all the old and new, despicable rumors.

It's a good thing this was only 200 pages, as nothing else was going to get done until I finished it.

Wonderful, exciting and entertaining read!

The author has delivered yet another amazing variation of Jane Austen's classic, Pride and Prejudice. Through the use of descriptive prose and vivid imagery, she skillfully re-creates the Regency era. Using the same characters as in Jane Austen's original work, she weaves a murder mystery into the tale. I devoured this novel in a few sittings and was left wanting more.

So good. I wouldn't be surprised if this one won an award too

I absolutely adored the courtship between Elizabeth and Darcy. Then suddenly there's lies, gossip, scandal, and Darcy's missing. I couldn't put it down and despite what the gossips say he's exactly the sort of man you want him to be.

I received an arc copy but gave no promise of a review.

Darcy and Lizzy meet in Ramsgate.

Most of the characters in the story are intelligent so this story is unlike any other I’ve read. Darcy has worked for the equivalent of MI6 or the CIA so the book is about what that means for he and Lizzy. Very fun. Since most everyone is more intelligent than a twit, the bad guys are quite a bit better being bad than someone like Wickham. We see that early in the story.

I recommend the story highly but since some of the plot is a mystery this might be a read once book.

I borrowed this book thanks to my Kindle Unlimited subscription and read it on the Kindle app on my tablet.

I have already read several of the books written by this talented author so I knew beforehand what I was going to expect, not only by reading the title, about this variation of Pride and Prejudice. This time in this great and interesting variation, the author increases the level of gossip, scandals, and even mystery with the disappearance of Darcy.

Again, the author achieves to get the reader transported to the Victorian era with the help of the language and expressions used. You will find it difficult to find differences in the style of the original Austen's work, only through different script, obviously. If you are a fan of the original story, you will find this book incredibly entertaining and, for sure, will devour the pages.

A summery, seaside romance leads to love and a woman is married before she is forced to wonder just what secrets her husband has been keeping when he disappeared. A riveting mystery wrapped around a romance set in the world of Jane Austen’s classic, Pride & Prejudice found a target audience in me.

The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy is part historical mystery and part romance. Fitzwilliam Darcy and his sister comes to the Regency era seaside resort of Ramsgate as does Elizabeth Bennet with her aunt and uncle. Elizabeth and Darcy get off on the wrong foot when he suspected her motives for being friendly toward his sister. Beach walks and Elizabeth’s cute little dog. A whirlwind romance ensues and they marry.
Elizabeth finds herself the wife of a wealthy man with high society connections. London society is watching the new Mrs. Darcy to see if she’ll survive or thrive their cutthroat world. Elizabeth has her own doubts after hearing gossip and rumor about her husband and those really set in to hound her when her husband suddenly disappears.

I was really curious to know what happened to Darcy and was glad this book read so quickly that I wasn’t left hanging for long. Very interesting… but I mustn’t spoil. There were some vicious gossips in this one and some worthy villains, too. Poor Elizabeth had to show so much strength during the time of her husband’s absence when she was wondering what was going on and getting flak from the gossips about why he was gone.

The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy was well-paced and developed for characters, romance, and mystery for all its shorter page count. It’s a complete variation from the classic so being familiar or not with the original is not an issue for readers. This would appeal to historical mystery fans who like a deal of sweet Regency romance as well.

I rec'd an eARC from the author to read in exchange for an honest review.

My full review will post at The Quill Ink 6.26.24.

What a charming P & P variation, which kept me rapt with the rich renderings of the Regency Era, the budding relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy, and the mystery when he goes missing, with all the negative public comments that shock Elizabeth. Elegantly written and ever so engaging, this top-notch Austen alternative tale will make Janeites cheer. Huzzah!

Thanks to Kelly Miller, a beloved author of Austenesque romances, for the ARC. Opinions are mine.

I am reviewing this book on behalf of Rosie Amber’s book review team #RBRT. Thank you to the author for sending me a review copy and to Rosie for the opportunity.

The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Darcy is described as “A Darcy and Elizabeth Pride and Prejudice Variant”. It is also referred to as a Regency romantic mystery. Its main characters are Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, originally characters from Pride and Prejudice but the circumstances of their meeting, their courtship, and marriage are rewritten by author Kelly Miller to be quite a different story from the Jane Austen classic.

The story is captivating and a real page-turner which I read in just over one day, since I could not put it down – I had to know just what had happened to Mr Darcy when he disappeared.

Familiar characters from Pride and Prejudice make an appearance, Mr Bingley, Georgiana Darcy, and Elizabeth’s father, but there are also many new characters to get to know. Elizabeth’s dog, Rory was a lovely addition to the story.

Told from Elizabeth’s perspective, her worry at her new husband’s disappearance is palpable and we cannot help but sympathize with her when the gossips start coming up with outlandish reasons why he might have left.

I wholeheartedly recommend this short book to anyone who enjoys stories from the Regency period, or mysteries with some romance thrown in for good measure.

A Ramsgate proposal and a P&P mystery.
While playing fetch with her Collie in Ramsgate, Elizabeth Bennet has a delightful encounter with Georgiana Darcy in this Pride and Prejudice variation mystery. Her brother, full of suspicion, quickly joins them, and his sharp and unfair insult puts the Darcy pride in the spotlight, creating tension from the start—not at a Meryton assembly!

The insult leads to an apology, which leads to a marriage. As the book description provides, there are some Darcy secrets unknown to Elizabeth that set the stage for this light mystery. Despite not being overly complex, Kelly Miller’s clever writing skills kept me guessing until the final pages.

While there is a hint of angst, the book’s short duration ensures a speedy and satisfying resolution. I really loved the fact that Elizabeth and Darcy are together almost from the very beginning of the book. The action is limited to Ramsgate and London. Other than the Gardiners, only Jane, Bingley and Mr. Bennet are briefly seen. Other family members only receive a mention.

I was thrilled with this new-to-me narrator, Vicky-Jo Eva. Her tone is very expressive and brings forth each character’s emotions really well. This talented performer brings the audiobook version to life with an exceptionally well-done and satisfying performance, and I hope she explores more JAFF variations in the future.

Although I have the book, I hadn’t had the opportunity to read it due to a busy schedule of late. The author kindly sent me a promo code for the newly released audiobook which allowed me to listen while I multi-tasked. It made my chores much more pleasurable!

Recommend.

Kisses only.

Another great variation from this author

The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy by Kelly Miller

I’ve read many of this author’s Pride and Prejudice variations, but none have been like this. It was lovely to see a different side to Darcy. Although their first meeting doesn’t go to plan when Elizabeth’s dog, Rory, runs to Georgiana, we soon see a softer side to him. Darcy and Elizabeth are quickly married and embark on married life together.

They’re very happy until Mr. Darcy mysteriously goes missing! Elizabeth is left questioning her husband and their relationship. As gossip spreads amongst society, she begins to question Darcy’s love for her. Will Darcy return?

I loved this variation and the chance to see their relationship through a different lens. I’m looking forward to seeing what variations the author has for us in future!

The author does an excellent job of creating a really fun adventure, with some angst and fear thrown in, as she builds an interesting story about Darcy's disappearance in London. As the story unfolds, I read even more quickly to see what would happen and how things would/could get righted. The storyline is well written and the details of clues are all eventually tied together.

I enjoyed the book and encourage anyone who wants to read a mastery retelling of the couple after marriage will find this book fun and absorbing!

Thanks, Kelly, for another enjoyable and well told story.

This is a riveting tale which encapsulates the splendour and drama of a world originally created by the revered Jane Austen in her prized classic novel, Pride and Prejudice. However, although most of the characters are included in this novel, the plot is, of course, completely different. The author does a brilliant job at capturing this world that Austen created and made so famous. This well-written book drew me into the era from the onset—an era where scandal and gossip were national pastimes amongst the genteel society of the upper class.

The author, Kelly Miller, takes the reader into this stuffy yet charming world from the Regency/Georgian era, where politeness was key, property entitlement and inheritance favoured men, and rules on etiquette imposed by the wider society of the time were to the detriment of many women who had no esteemed connections or “dowry". The author eloquently highlights the afflictions caused to women of little fortune or lacking social standing in society especially when it involved men from nobility and matters of the heart. I was so impressed with her depictions of this world and her vast knowledge and attention-to-detail regarding the period and the language spoken by differing classes in England—many Jane Austen fans, such as myself, cherish any opportunity at taking another glimpse at the characters in Pride and Prejudice, and of course, Mr Darcy, who was portrayed in a similar light yet Kelly Miller further explores the many facets of his personality—how he may have appeared in a different situation and plot.

I was also thrilled to read about the various locales, homes, and estates that were in the original story where the characters originated: Pemberley, Longbourn, Derbyshire, Netherfield Park, and many other places that Jane Austen fans know and adore. At times, I was also delighted to feel that I was part of the visits in the drawing room with many of the guests having tea and cake—the author does a wonderful job at placing the reader in these settings, as well as describing nature and the different environments.

Due to the fact that it is based on a novel by one of the greatest writers, at first I was curious to see if the book would be able to capture the world that Jane Austen cleverly created, but I was pleasantly surprised at how articulately Kelly Miller brought out the characters from the famous novel, and how articulate the writing is throughout the novel. One small gripe is that I would have loved to see the plot at the end stretch out more than it does as there were many revelations in one chapter, however, the authors impeccable writing style and her ability to draw me into the story, as well as the suspenseful plot, more than made up for any shortcomings.

The complicated and wonderful characters of Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet were similar to the original novel. It was also wonderful to see many of the characters making an appearance throughout the novel, including the grumpy and condescending Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Mr Bingley’s sisters with their sneers, backhanded compliments, and veiled insults.

Overall, this was a remarkably well-written and compelling novel full of intrigue and mystery, as well as charming and delightful settings. It was a joy to read.

From the first page, I slipped easily into the enchanting world of Pride and Prejudice in Kelly Miller’s latest Jame Austin story variation. The settings, dialogue, manners, and mores of the Regency Period are vividly described and authentically written by Miller. Elizabeth Bennet and her aunt are visiting a family friend by the sea at Ramsgate. This is where Elizabeth meets Darcy and his sister Georgiana by chance. Although the meeting initially shows Darcy to be quite arrogant, the scene sets the stage to reveal the very confident and self-assured Elizabeth, which I loved. As the misunderstanding is smoothed over, an undeclared courtship begins in a bit of an unorthodox manner that turns out to be perfect for them.

All the characters are compelling, but I especially loved Millers characterizations of both Darcy and Elizabeth. The respect he has for her intelligence, decision-making, and opinions is enlightening for the times. His love and giving nature to put her needs equally to his is beautifully described. The dynamics of their relationship are endearing and not overly done. When Darcy inexplicably disappears, Elizabeth’s self-reliance, steadfastness, and determination are challenged at every turn. Her actions are a testament to the capability a strong woman during a time when they were discounted and invisible. The mystery has a unique twist and was a complete surprise I didn’t anticipate. This thoroughly engaging, multilayered story was a delightful immersion into the world of Pride and Prejudice. I highly recommend this beautifully written story for all fans of historical fiction and romance.

Captivating!

I recently read Kelly Miller’s “The Trouble with Friends” and loved it! I was eager to read another of her P & P variations and found “The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy” to be even better!

In this variation, the romance between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy happens right from the start and they are happily married within the first third of the book. After which, Mr. Darcy goes missing, transforming this sweet romance into a suspenseful mystery.

I could not stop reading! I enjoyed this book so much for its plot but also character development - I especially enjoyed the bond and details between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy’s sister, Georgina. I look forward to reading more of these charming and irresistible books! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys Pride and Prejudice and wants to read about Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy after they marry - their romance is incredibly sweet!

The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy by Kelly Miller is a page-turner from start to finish! As in the original Jane Austin novel, Elizabeth Bennett is smart and brave, and Fitzwilliam Darcy is a different kind of enigmatic and captivating and very likeable. Together, they spark with chemistry and an undeniable love.
The story is full of intrigue, thrilling twists, and unexpected surprises that kept me guessing the entire way. Kelly Miller writes a story that is both exciting and emotionally satisfying. If you love the clever characters from ‘Pride and Prejudice’, characters, romance, and a great deal of mystery and intrigue, this novel is for you.

Honestly just so good and enjoyable! Classy and stylish, with a strong, capable Lizzy and a Mr. Darcy who is kind to traveling fortune-tellers and dogs and servants alike, and accepting of gay people. Will definitely be checking out this author’s other work, because this is the decadent cream of P&P variations.

Was definitely difficult to put down. Once I started reading it I couldn’t stop.

Started out a sweet love story, a marriage, then the disappearance occurred. Scandals, lies, and trust issues come to the forefront.

This book will have you turning the pages not knowing what is going to happen next

"The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy" by Kelly Miller is a captivating Pride and Prejudice variation that skillfully combines Regency romance with mystery. After a swift courtship and marriage, Elizabeth Bennet must unravel the puzzle of her husband's sudden disappearance. Miller's Elizabeth is resourceful and determined, navigating high society while seeking the truth. With authentic period details, well-crafted characters, and a brisk pace, this novel offers a fresh take on Austen's world. Despite some minor issues with pacing and plot resolution, it's an engaging read for both Austen fans and mystery lovers, exploring themes of trust and resilience in a familiar yet exciting setting.

This book is full of intrigue that Lizzy must somehow navigate as the newly married Mrs Darcy but without the stalwart help of her husband, Fitzwilliam Darcy.
This offering from Ms Kelly reads more like a play than a novel, which I find to be an exciting switch from her usual Austen-like prose.
In this book, Lizzy's character must carry the majority of the story. While it is still the Darcy and Lizzy romance that forges the deep connection, Lizzy's intellect and intuition play a more significant role with Darcy as a secondary character.
While it stands out for its uniqueness from her other offerings in the Austen world, it does not disappoint. It shows Lizzy as a strong woman who is trusted by her husband in an intolerant society.
Kudos to Ms Miller for stepping out of the confines of the typical Regency Romance.

Rory enjoys playing along the beach in Ramsgate. When her Collie brings the ball to a young blonde woman, Elizabeth chats with her. Then, a dark-haired man accuses Elizabeth of using Rory to meet them. Elizabeth hopes to avoid meeting the rude stranger again during her seaside holiday. But how might her life change should her path intersect with the dark-haired Adonis? Let's put on our finery, pack our revolvers, leap into The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Darcy, and find out!

Story
When Elizabeth Bennett meets the man and his sister again at Mrs Stapleton's house, Georgiana greets her happily. Her brother, Fitzwilliam Darcy, apologizes for mistaking Elizabeth's intentions. Elizabeth's admission that she initially thought him incapable of understanding the importance of kindness and respect leaves him humbled. So when Darcy notices Elizabeth has been reading An Essay Concerning Human Understanding by John Locke, he asks her opinion of Book IV. Elizabeth appreciates his receptiveness to her interpretations. Darcy likes how Elizabeth has thought through her opinions and can discuss the merits of their differing views without arguing.

In The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Darcy, Elizabeth begins meeting Darcy on her morning walks. Despite her aunt's request that Elizabeth not meet with him privately, the wide-ranging conversations help them appreciate each other better. While Darcy and his sister enjoy the summer in Ramsgate, Mrs Rebecca Stapleton invited Modesty Gardiner and her niece to spend August with her. As Elizabeth's month in Ramsgate nears its end, neither she nor Darcy wishes to part from the other. So, after a short engagement, Elizabeth becomes Mrs Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Despite Georgiana’s approval of Elizabeth, not everyone in Darcy’s family believes he made the correct choice. Some, like Lady Matlock, insist Darcy should have married someone from a titled or wealthier family. Nor do all his relatives accept Elizabeth's ability to oversee his correspondence and finances. These factors become important considerations when he goes missing after a shooting in The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Darcy.

Art
Firstly, Kelly Miller differentiates her novel by setting it in Ramsgate and London instead of more familiar locales like Longbourn and Pemberly. While Elizabeth braves the disdain of Darcy’s family, she also faces the dangers of England’s bustling capital. Darcy trained her to use a gun. Elizabeth believes the staff, overseen by their butler Slade, can protect her on their house and grounds. Still, someone shot the man who accompanied Darcy to the house in Camberwell. So when she leaves the house, Elizabeth takes a gun with her.

Given the influx of foreigners following the French Revolution and Napoleon Bonaparte's rise to power, Mr Ellis from the Alien Office investigates Darcy's disappearance. Joshua Webb, who attended Cambridge with Darcy, stays in the house and helps Elizabeth question anyone claiming to have seen him. Still, none of Darcy's close friends know him. In The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Darcy, Elizabeth finds herself a stranger in a strange land, intent on protecting Georgiana, discovering what happened to her beloved husband, and not knowing who she can rely on.

In addition to placing Elizabeth in different locations, Kelly Miller also isolates Elizabeth from her family. By meeting Elizabeth while she and her aunt stay at Mrs Stapleton's house, Darcy doesn't view her in terms of her family's societal stumbles. Nor does he feel obliged to protect Charles Bingley's interests or observe propriety around Bingley's sisters and brother-in-law when they lease Netherfield Park near the Bennetts' home.

Lastly, by shortening the period between their first meeting and marriage to six weeks, Kelly Miller gives the couple sufficient time for love to bloom but not for Elizabeth to know Darcy well. Nor did Darcy have a year to think through what life with Elizabeth would be like. Perhaps, as Lady Catherine de Bourgh suggests, her nephew had second thoughts about his union with Elizabeth and "disappeared" to get his life back on track.

Final Thoughts
Kelly Miller's prose captures the elegance and romance of England's Regency period. Her story allows Elizabeth, Darcy, and Georgiana to shine in this new variation of Jane Austen's immortal novel. Enhanced by Vicky-Jo Eva’s cultured voice, the audiobook spirits you back to Regency England, portraying Miller's narrative and Jane Austen's characters with captivating realism in The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Darcy.

My most persistent thought after reading Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina was not some profound sentiment regarding the plight of a lady so lost in mental destitution she hurtled herself beneath an approaching train; rather, I recall a kind of mundane, affronted curiosity about the life of the man whose employment involved removing his master’s boots.

This is how my mind works. Best to keep this in mind as we examine together Ye Olde And Yett Newe novel from Kelly Miller, The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy —hereafter Darcy, for the mercy of my fingers.

Darcy takes place in two acts, with a third, a denouement, that offers a resolution worthy of a Shakespearean comedy, including a dramatic twist and satisfying comeuppance.

The first act, the novel’s setup, reads much like your standard 19th century novel. All the proper sort of people rub elbows and ‘What! What!’ their way through parties, feeling smug and superior because they were born rich. Within this setting our gentleman hero meets and falls in love with the novel’s central character, Elizabeth, a precocious young woman who, to the delight of Mr. Darcy, but the chagrin of the majority of men in this world, has been encouraged to read and develop her intellect. Elizabeth falls just as hard for Mr. Darcy in return, at which point any 19th century reader would be scandalized enough to require their butler fetch the fainting couch. Hardly a sex scene by modern standards, but fun enough.

The second act ramps up the what! what! to eleven, as the endless party moves to London, where the upper crust gets an even uppier crust, all with appropriately long noses from which to sneer down at the proles. But this party life is interrupted by a most inconvenient whodunit, in which the novel’s namesake goes missing, to much amazement, and whatever word suggests a staid and proper British 19th century hullabaloo. This event takes up the remainder of Miller’s book, and in this second act the story really gets going. From this point on, I did not set the book down, which is about as fine a compliment as I ever hand out. I’d been invested in the characters, caught up in a living, breathing world, and now I wanted to know just what the devil was going on.

The conclusion, it turns out, is a satisfying wrap-up of events, with a last minute bit of surprise drama.

So here we are, the play is done, and yet still I stand upon the stage, watching you watching me, as you wonder why I won’t just go away and let you hurry off and purchase this delightful book. Well, it all comes back to the boots, you see; or rather, that two-dimensional nobody I mentioned previously, whose employment included removing the footwear of others, a boot-puller who had a family, and a life I wondered about, and who collected my interest more than Tolstoy’s main characters, because my brain works like that.

And so I am left wondering about two similar characters in Miller’s novel. The first is that forgotten worker tasked with following Mrs. Darcy on horseback to ensure her safety. For certain, everything worked out, but did anyone tell him the lady was fine, and he could go home to dinner with his family? Or is he still there, standing forlornly by his horse, ever-faithful and resolute, but hungry now, and perhaps thinking of finding a corner to relieve himself?

The second thing I wonder is about that lad Luke. Did anyone ever track him down and hand him that £200 he earned? I like to think so, that he and his mates are sitting in a local pub, feet up on the table, drinking root beers and stuffing their faces with mutton while the bar maid tut tuts at them from behind the bar. But, alas, I will never know. Thus is the fate of the lower classes, I’m afraid, from Miller to Tolstoy.

I enjoyed Miller’s The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy, and I believe you will, too. Thus ends my long-winded stamp of approval.

Kelly Miller's "The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy" seamlessly intertwines the charm of Austen's world with the pulse-quickening suspense of a well-crafted mystery. Set against the rich tapestry of Regency-era England, the novel breathes new life into beloved characters, ushering them into a realm filled with unexpected twists and turns. From the very first page, readers find themselves irresistibly drawn into this mesmerizing tale, eager to unravel the layers that conceal its deepest secrets.

At its core, the book is a sophisticated blend of romance, mystery, and historical detail. The author demonstrates remarkable prowess in capturing the nuances of the period, while simultaneously weaving in intrigue that is both evocative and compelling. Miller's choice to focus on Mr. Darcy, a figure already beloved by many, allows the narrative to delve deeply into unexplored facets of his character. His struggle with new and unexpected challenges provides a fresh examination of values, love, and personal growth, all while maintaining a palpable sense of suspense.

The depth of emotional connection is a testament to Miller's ability to construct vivid, relatable personas. Each character is lovingly crafted, their emotions laid bare with authenticity, inviting readers into their inner worlds. It is this deep character exploration that reinforces the vibrant tapestry of the plot, with a dynamic cast that supports and challenges Darcy throughout the narrative. As motives and intentions become clouded, the interplay of relationships becomes both engaging and immensely satisfying.

A notable strength of the book is its elegant prose, which transports readers to a bygone era without ever feeling stilted or archaic. The language is both lush and precise, evoking the sights and sounds of early 19th-century England while building tension with deliberate care. Miller’s keen insight into human nature imbues the book with profound reflections, ensuring that readers are not only entertained but also introspective as they traverse the narrative's intricacies.

Kelly Miller’s "The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy" deserves a resounding 5 out of 5 stars for its captivating plot, masterful storytelling, and the emotional resonance it achieves. The novel’s ability to enthrall both fans of romance and mystery, while remaining true to the essence of its source material, is an accomplishment worthy of high praise. In "The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy," Kelly Miller masterfully reimagines yet again the beloved world of Pride and Prejudice, treating readers to a captivating twist on the beloved classic. Set against the backdrop of London's high society, the novel explores the intricacies of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's relationship post-wedding, delving into themes of love, trust, and betrayal. I’ve come to enjoy Ms. Miller’s ability to breathe new life into familiar characters, offering fresh perspectives and unexpected twists that keep us readers eagerly turning the pages.

As someone who has devoured Miller's previous Pride and Prejudice variations, I can attest this shines along with the rest of them. I have mentioned before that I am not (or at least once upon a time I was not) a big fan of variations that diverge before the infamous proposal in Kent, but I must say that Miller's narrative prowess has completely won me over. I have come to love all these variations a lot! Again, the writer’s skill in storytelling shines through as she navigates the complexities of societal expectations, family dynamics, (as ever, I love me an Elizabeth and Georgiana friendship!) and of course – the very mysterious disappearance of Mr. Darcy !

From the (also infamous!) setting of Ramsgate to the bustling streets of London, Miller's vivid descriptions transported me to Regency England, immersing me in a world of romance, intrigue, and mystery. Elizabeth's journey to uncover the truth behind Darcy's disappearance is fraught with tension and suspense, and along the way (which I loved!) Miller touches some serious issues such as gender inequality during those times, which I enjoyed, as it added a bit of depth to the narrative.

Overall, "The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr. Darcy" is another must-read for fans of Jane Austen and lovers of historical fiction alike. With its engaging plot, great and lovable characters, and unexpected twists, this novel is a perfect continuation to the world of Kelly Miller's books. I eagerly anticipate delving into more of her variations in the future, confident that each will offer a fresh and captivating take on the timeless classic.

This 200-page novel was my introduction to the world of Jane Austen fanfic writing, which I had no idea even existed until now. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised. Who wouldn't want to linger in comedies of Regency-era manners?

The Mysterious Disappearance of Mr Darcy took some distinct liberties with its characters - the most salient of these divergences from canon being that Mr Darcy was made far more agreeable for plot purposes than he was in the original novel, and Elizabeth far more open to being romanced. Aside from an initial Great Big Misunderstanding to start the story off on the wrong foot, there was almost no friction between Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam - no pride, no prejudice, just insta-love. Oh, well, that's "fanon vs canon" for you. In an alternate universe, it is love at first sight between Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam, and they marry happily within mere weeks of meeting each other, which would have been most unusual for the time, but again, "fanon vs canon" and "alternate universe" are at play here.

Romance novels demand love at first sight and a whirlwind courtship, so that's what we got. It was written in a voice that was mostly true to what someone in the early nineteenth century would have used, and it was lovely comfort reading. I devoured this book in a waiting room while my spouse was recovering from heart surgery, and it was a balm to my frayed nerves.

The historical details in Miller's "variation" are spot-on and occasionally even had me Googling for more information. Dear reader, did you know that the Bow Street Runners, a renowned private investigation and security company that was eventually absorbed into the London Metropolitan police, had been founded by the novelist and literary critic Henry Fielding?

Occasional moments of discontinuity jarred - for instance, at one point, Fitzwilliam's "college friend" is described as having been at Oxford, rather than Cambridge, and not one character points out the discrepancy - but on the whole, this was a delightful read.
