Young Wolfram dreams of becoming a knight, yet the path to knighthood is an arduous one.
Sworn to serve as a squire in the household of an ageing baron, Wolfram soon realises that greater challenges than martial training and courtly manners await him. His lord's castle is crumbling, his knights feeble, and outlaws and extortionists prey on the estate unchecked. A growing infatuation with the baron's daughter, the enchanting Lady Ingrid, binds Wolfram's heart to the fate of the manor, yet a dark secret lurks within the castle that threatens to turn Wolfram's dream into a nightmare.
How high is the price of knighthood, and how much must Wolfram sacrifice in the name of fealty?
Kelly River is an author who dwells on the edge of the English countryside, forever losing themselves in rambling trails both fictional and material. An avid fan of reading, walking, games, and green teas, you might find them fondling a sheaf of freshly-picked grain or gazing at the canopy of trees beyond the garden fence while they write.
I absolutely love, love, love this series. I have read the first four titles in the series and have just started CALIA'S NEEDLE, the fifth book. The author writes so simply, yet so evocatively, of the period that I feel I am living in the time frame she creates. I feel the same emotions as her characters, loving the good people and hating the baddies. Each time I am getting to the end of her books I try hard to read more slowly because I just don't want to get to the end of the book and come back to real life again. I don't know what I'm going to do when I get to the end of the full series. I really will feel desolate. No other books have captured my imagination to the extent of these stories, and I have been an avid reader since the age of five. Kelly River is truly a marvellously atmospheric writer and I hope she keeps writing books like these for many, many more years.
This is the fourth book in Kelly River’s saga about Elizabeth Merchant and her family. Wolfram is her son. He’s a young squire in a castle and family which have seen better days. I loved the writing as I did in the first three books. The emphasis is on the relationships. I just purchased the fifth book and can’t wait to read about Calia.
