His Ruthless Bite

Rate this book
The Lord Vampire of Rochester doesn’t do a favor without a price. And now it’s time to collect.

Gavin Drake, Baron of Darkwood is being pestered by nosy neighbors and matchmaking mothers of the mortal nobility. To escape their scrutiny, he concludes that it’s time to take a wife. After witnessing the young vampire Lenore’s loyalty to the Lord of London, he decides she is sufficient for the role.

After surviving kidnapping and abuse from rogue vampires, Lenore Graves wants to help other women recover from their inner wounds. She befriends physician John Elliotson and uses her vampire powers to aid him in using mesmerism on his patients. When the Lord

Vampire of London declares that Lenore is the price the Lord Vampire of Rochester demands for aiding him in battle the previous year, she is terrified. Will all of her healing and hard work be destroyed by Ruthless Rochester? And yet, she can’t suppress stirrings of desire at the memory of their potent encounter.

After Gavin assures her that the marriage will be in name only, Lenore reluctantly accepts Gavin’s proposal rather than face potential animosity from her new lord. Determined to continue her work, she invites John Elliotson to Rochester. As they help women recover from traumas, Lenore explores her own inner turmoil and examines her attraction to her husband.

Gavin quickly realizes his marriage is a mistake. His new baroness’s involvement with the mesmerist is damaging his reputation among mortals and vampires alike. He knows he should put a stop to Lenore’s antics— yet her tender heart is warming his own and tempting him to make her his bride in truth.

As Lenore and Gavin’s relationship blossoms, the leader of a gang of rogue vampires embarks on a quest for vengeance against Gavin… using Lenore as his key.

Lenore is a young vampire. She has survived a kidnapping, torture and rape. Lenore is working with a doctor of mesmerizium (spelling). They are helping the peasant women with their psychological problems.

Gavin is the Lord Vampire of Rochester. Every fifty years he marries to keep the human mothers and their daughters from pursuing him. Otherwise, he would blow his cover in the human world.

Gavin decides to marry Lenore. But he soon discovers he wants more from his name-only marriage. He wants Lenore. She's not sure she can handle the physical side of marriage. When Lenore is kidnapped by rogue vampires, Gavin must face his vengeful best friend to free them both. Can Gavin free them without getting them killed? Can Lenore have a true marriage with Gavin?

The novel is a fun read. I kept turning the pages to find out what happened next to Lenore. Of the main characters, I liked Gavin the best. The twist on the rogue vampires was a nice touch. The plot is simple. In the epilogue there is a hint of what the next book will be about. The love scenes are tastefully written.

HIS RUTHLESS BITE is just as delicious as the previous books in the Scandals With Bite series. With romantic moments balanced out by suspenseful situations, HIS RUTHLESS BITE offers readers the rare combination of historical and paranormal romance, and does it very well.

One of the great things about a series of romance books is that it a reader usually does not have to have read the previous books in the series to jump in the middle. This is definitely the case with HIS RUTHLESS BITE. Though previous books' characters are mentioned, it is generally in passing, and the details of their stories are unnecessary. Instead, we get an entirely new cast of characters. The world-building is sparse, but it doesn't need to be extremely detailed, as their vampiric society isn't super complex, and the rules that govern it are easily mentioned in passing. The main focus in HIS RUTHLESS BITE is the romance between Gavin and Lenore, and that was where the story shone.

Though there were many tangential plots woven into HIS RUTHLESS BITE, and at times I felt like there was almost too much going on. Between Lenore overcoming her past, along with Gavin's supposed ruthlessness (and thus the need for demonstrations thereof), there was the mortal doctor that was a friend of Lenore's and the rogue vampires that were plaguing Gavin's lands. Add in a few deaths, a courtship, some mortal meddling mothers, and HIS RUTHLESS BITE covered all the bases of a vampiric historical romance.

In my opinion, all the other side stories seemed to melt away when Gavin and Lenore were together. Gavin's sweet and tender side was a delight to see, and the way he treated Lenore was a delightful contrast to what we knew of him from previous books. His overwhelming love for Lenore was adorable and though a bit like insta-love, as he got to know her, it got stronger and was more convincing. Lenore is spunky and brave, a true heroine who has some weaknesses to overcome, but does an admirable job of growing and evolving throughout the book. She is a perfect partner for Gavin, and I love how the two of them come together and realize that.

All in all, HIS RUTHLESS BITE is an excellent, engaging read. With a bit of suspense to keep the reader interested, and a good romantic plot line to make them swoon, it has something for everybody. Brooklyn Ann just keeps upping the bar with her Scandals With Bite series, and HIS RUTHLESS BITE is no exception!

Great story. Great Series.

I have enjoyed every book in this series so far. I really love the paranormal historical romance books. They bring a bit of bite into the typical genre. LOL pun intended.

This was a great story with great characters. I did like Rochester a lot. He was handsome, strong, smart and just sweet (regardless of the nickname Ruthless Rochester). I enjoyed Lenore too, however, I do wish she had been a bit stronger and not so weak, I know she went through a lot and had issues, totally understandable, but I would have liked her kick someones ass!

The romance between these two grew and it felt real and genuine, not forced or fake. There were a couple very well written sex scenes. The story line and plot was great, and it all flowed very well together. Not full of filler nonsense either.

I highly recommend this series especially if you like historical romance and vampire books. This series is a total YES!

I’m excited that I get to be part of this blog tour because I just adore Brooklyn Ann’s Scandals with Bite series. And I’m so glad that she decided to keep publishing the books herself. I was starting to froth at the mouth after BITE AT FIRST SIGHT.

And let me tell you, HIS RUTHLESS BITE will not disappoint in the slightest. Ann’s characters are engaging and complex and she really doesn’t do a whole lot of the “romantic confusion” that you can find in other romance novels where the characters keep missing the mark about each other despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I think, with HIS RUTHLESS BITE especially, there was enough drama and conflict with Lenore trying to cope with her past and melding it with her present that not a whole lot else was needed when it came to the blooming romance between her and Rochester. They had enough to get over without constant miscommunication.

The sex, as always, was stellar and, in this case, more delicate than in past books due to Lenore’s history. I can’t really speak to how Lenore’s character was handled in that regard and how realistic her coping was but I think Ann handled it with care and allowed Lenore to move beyond her past and heal. The trauma of rape is different for each survivor and coping with it would be different for each person as well, making there no “right” or “wrong” way to approach the topic in fiction, I imagine, as long as enough tact is there to approach it thoughtfully. And Ann did all of that.

Rochester was also very sympathetic to Lenore’s needs as well. His number one concern was her well-being, not just from a “I’m a man and must protect the lady” perspective but in helping her manage her past as well. There was very little he did where he didn’t account for how she would react to it. It made for some fine reading and made Rochester incredibly appealing.

The sex, as always, was steamy and phenomenal, and I think all the more potent in HIS RUTHLESS BITE as it allowed Lenore to know pleasure and love in ways she never had in the past. I feel weird saying that because she is a rape survivor, and that’s a bit point in the book, but all things considered I felt the sex was that much more gratifying because of her healing and dealing with her past in her own way. Plus I just love how Ann writes sex scenes, so that too.

From a depth of story perspective I think HIS RUTHLESS BITE is my favorite of the series so far. There’s just so much going on and so much character development and breaking down barriers that even without the sex I would have been completely ensnared in the story. The sex, I think, was lighter than in past books but considering the topics handled here I imagine that would be expected.
And I’m squeeing a little because based on how this one ended I imagine there’s MORE COMING. Double entendre intended. I can’t wait.

I've read each book in this series and I've liked every single story.

In His Ruthless Bite, Lord Darkwood is ready to collect a favor or two. His life in the country would be great if it wasn't for all the mothers throwing their daughters at him. He needs a wife STAT so he can carry on with whatever it is vampires do, and he knows who'd fit the position just right. He plans to have a marriage of convenience for the next 50 years. He'd give Lenore security, gowns, a roof over her head, and all she has to do is become his baroness.

Lenore is traumatized by her kidnapping and the men that raped her a year ago. She'll be forever grateful to Lord Darkwood for taking her into his home after she escaped her abusers. Even though she returned to London, she knows one day soon Lord Darkwood will ask for his favor back. When she's summoned by him, she's frightened but knows she can't deny his request.

When Lord Darkwood proposes their marriage of convenience she accepts, so long as their marriage isn't consumed. Both think their arrangement may work just fine until they start spending time with each other, and little by little realize they want their relationship to be real and not a farce.

I think my favorite scene is when Lord Darkwood punishes her by biting her and drinking her blood. I wish he would've done it more than once :) That was a pretty hot scene.

Will I continue reading this series? Heck yeah.

Absolutely LOVED it! I love how the author used a tragic experience of a young woman and turned it so she was able to over come and conquer the harm that had been done to her. Even though rape is a very sensitive subject, I love how Brooklyn used what happened to the woman and made it so she was a strong woman at the end; a woman who was able to fully love the man she was married to and would spend all eternity with. I was given the book as an ARC in exchange for a review. I love Brooklyn's work and I cannot wait to read more from her.

This is part of a series. I enjoyed this story a lot. Gavin is a Lord Vampire who is tired of having potential brides thrust his way. He takes a young vampire as his bride to stop the pursuit. Lenore has been through hell and Gavin helps her to see that she is not a victim but a survivor. Their feelings grow for each other through the dangers that plague them and the village. I could not stop reading because I needed to know if they would survive the danger. I highly recommend this one.

I am once again in the minority.

Did I read the same book as every one else?

My excitement at finding this for free on amazon dwindled with every chapter I read. The previous books have been all over the place and this book was no exception. One chapter had me sighing, the next had me wanting to throw my kindle across the room. Every time I finish a book in this series, I feel disappointed. Yet, there is something a little addictive about them. I want to know what happens to the characters in the next book. After this book, I'm not so sure anymore.

This book was my least favorite by far. I did not and could not like Gavin. I liked nothing about him. Everything he did, said, and thought, rubbed me the wrong way. As the book went on, I just wanted to punch him in the face. Repeatedly. Everything Gavin did was all about Gavin. And when he found himself being in the least bit selfless, he was always mentally patting himself on the back. How very impressive that he was able to restrain himself from jumping his traumatized wife. How lovely that he actually cared whether Lenore liked the gowns he bought her.

The thing that really saved this book from being completely awful was Lenore. She was strong, caring, and found enjoyment in everything she did. There was a touch of Cinderella in this book that I really enjoyed. It was wonderful to see her get all of the things she dreamed about as a child. Lenore was just adorable. I had no trouble seeing why Gavin fell for her. I loved seeing her grow and heal.

There is also something that I absolutely love about this series that I have unintentionally left of my reviews of the previous books in this series. The author works into each book a semi-fictionalized version of a person that actually existed in the time period of the book. They are written into the plot as themselves and add a touch of reality to an otherwise fictional version of 19th century England. I love reaching the end of the book and reading the little section she includes about the character she chose to work into the book. It's really a wonderful idea.

Unfortunately, these things weren't enough to save the book for me.

Brooklyn Ann isn’t holding anything back in His Ruthless Bite, pairing a traumatized victim of gang rape with a powerful vampire of nobility who needs a “sufficient” wife to ward off the advances of mortal mothers scheming for his marriage to their daughters. Sounds rather brutal in itself, doesn’t it?
But, as they say, there is more and Brooklyn Ann delivers. Lenore is terrified of the powerful Gavin, her only experience with sex was a living hell and she wants no part of the pain or demoralizing act, but as she sees the true side of this man, she finds that he can be warm, protective and caring.

Rogue vampires are on the loose and one of them just may be out to seek revenge on Gavin, using any means possible, not enough? A vampire hunter is “staking” his claim, also. As the “stronger-than-she-realizes Lenore uses her vampiric powers to aid other female victims, she becomes a target of said revenge. A woman ahead of her time, with a damaged heart of gold and conflicting feelings about her husband and their lack of intimate relations, Lenore is the star of this tale, in spite of her fears and nightmares.

The passion between these two comes alive in a beautiful way and Brooklyn Ann’s delivery through her vivid background scenes and sensual handling of romantic scenes is well-done.

I received an ARC edition in exchange for my honest review.

I thought the series was over with the previous book, so His Ruthless Bite was a delightful surprise! This time we're getting the love story of the supposedly ruthless Lord of Vampries, Gavin, and Lenore, whom we met previously after she escaped captivity and torture. Gavin is calling in his debts, and what he wants is Lenore. She's to be his bride for the next fifty years (something he does every century to keep up appearances). Lenore is use to a not-so happy life, so becoming a baroness is no hardship as long as she can continue to help women like her. And Gavin never expects to finally fall in love after 500 years.

His Ruthless Bite was so freaking sweet! Gavin is not at all what vampire society believes him to be. He actually courts Lenore publicly, even though their marriage is a business arrangement of sorts. Then he lets her know that he's there for her as she still struggles with nightmares and panic attacks. He's very understanding of her situation and just wants to make it better. Meanwhile, Lenore works with a human doctor to help poor women who also suffer from PTSD (although this term doesn't exist back then). She may have gone through something horrific, but that doesn't stop Lenore from putting herself out there.

In addition to the romance and Lenore's personal journey, there is a bit of a suspense plot to His Ruthless Bite. Justus, who was best friends with Gavin, but is now banished, wants revenge. Obviously, this means he must use Lenore as blackmail. It was fairly predictable, but then there's a twist! I hadn't liked Justus up to that point, but then we learn some things about his past and his possible future. I certainly hope his book is next! I need to know more!

I really enjoyed His Ruthless Bite. I'm so glad that this series is still going. The author has a way of making vampires fun again without over-doing it.

His Ruthless Bite bk.4 had all the makings for a 5 star review, but when a gang raped victim is the heroine of the story and suffering from PTSD its take all the wonderful parts of the story down. Rape is like a White Elephant in the room and in my opinion should never be used as a plot point especially in paranormal romance or any romance story. Rape should only be used by professionals for therapy. Had I know this would be about Lenore Graves trauma I would never have agreed to read the Arch provided by the author. Whom I hold in high regard. I just don't know why she would use this topic for her Paranormal Romance story.

With that said I loved all the characters Baron Gavin Rochester, Lord Vampire of Rochester was my hero and his courtship of Lenore was wonderful story telling for HR lovers. The story is fast paced. Of course we have our rogue vampires who bring the suspense to the story. They are dealt with handily. I like revisiting old characters from previous books. The description of the gowns and food at the balls were spot on. This was a good romance with Rochester and Lenore and you could feel how they grew in love with each other. I like the steady build up of trust Lenore has toward Gavin.

All in all a good story!! This is my honest review based on the Arch I received from the Author!!

Lenore was a great girl, she was kind, soft hearted, gentle, and innocent, “you’re… beautiful.” She studied his body as if it were a rare work of art. “Like that painting in the library, except for…” Her gaze trailed down to his erect ***k and her blush deepened. “Well, that.” When Gavin wants to be he can be a passionate man, “perhaps I am going mad as well,” he murmured, kissing her neck. “I’m certainly mad about you.” He yanked her onto his lap, and for a brief time, their troubles faded into the ether." I love this series, I love the characters I'm always excited for a new book to come out.

All Lenore Graves wants is to help other women recover from their inner wounds but the Lord of London has declared that Lenore is the price that the Lord of Rochester demands for aiding him in battle in this enthralling paranormal romance. Scandals are lots of fun and makes tongues wag with abandon but nothing compares to Scandals with Bite as they add spice and sexy sizzle to every page. Lenore and Gavin’s scandalous behavior had me glued to the pages and I am looking forward to the next juicy scandal in this series.

I wish I had actually read this one after #3. I know they're all their own stories, but I couldn't help but feel left out with some of the back story. Things that I felt I should have known already were being hinted at throughout the first quarter of the book. As the lands and rule of Rochester is painted for the reader, we are whisked away on plot after plot, all moving in tandem but slowly like a trickle from a river. Only after baited breath and false leads are we able to release the dam. And what a flood it is! We harbor feelings of contempt toward our foe, only to realize we have been misled unintentionally, and the real hate should come from within that.
This book is a beautiful paving stone to the next book that sounds more like an adventure than a business venture. I feel as though the ending was cut short, though. I know it needed to end, but the character that is Justus felt fake at the very end. He was so bent on getting his revenge, nothing would stop him... oh but a rumor of my lost love? I'm outta here! No it just seems too sudden. Not in character at all. All in all, I would read again.

M/F dark paranormal historical romance (did I include everything?) is a new genre to me, and I didn’t expect to enjoy His Ruthless Bite as much as I did. I wish I’d read the previous books in the series as I think I’d have a better perspective of the Vampire world. His Ruthless Bite is a book of strands woven skilfully together; the vampire life, the tentative then sensual romance, the rogue vampires’ plot and Leonore’s skill in mesmerising.
One of the things I did enjoy about the book was the ruthlessness that was evident throughout the book. The vampire life left little room for failure. Still, there were touches of humour in the book and I giggled a couple of times. I enjoyed the sub-plots more than the main romance, but that doesn’t mean to say the romance was badly done. It’s just not my focus. The cast of secondary characters were well developed, with good back stories.
I had to suspend my disbelief regarding some of the historical details, but I didn’t care. This was a good read and I’ll probably buy the other books to catch up. Brooklyn Ann has found a new reader.

I received this book for free via Goodreads First Reads. That was nearly 3 years ago.

It is a book I started and read a few pages of. I then had a clear out and it ended up at the back of a cupboard, nearly forgotten. I found it again recently and finished reading it.

It is book 4 of a series but it filled in some earlier gaps as it went along. This might have slowed the pace of the novel down but it also allowed me to catch up. The pacing was a little disconcerting as the main action and conclusion did seem a little rushed.

The two main characters obviously had most of the story focused on them to the detriment of other characters who I felt could have had a lot more input. I also felt that there were a few plot points that were not satisfactory explained (although they could be in the prequels and the sequels).

When I describe a book as readable it is not a bad thing. This was readable. I would read more from the series too. It just didn't enchant me and I felt (to use a cliché) that these vampires lack bite.

A young vampire, Lenore, has been through more than most people can handle but she is a survivor. She had met Gavin Drake, Baron of Darkwood, previously when she was in a desperate situation and he had helped her, for a favor. Now that favor is being sought, Gavin wants Lenore to become his bride so her can avoid the pestering mothers of society. Lenore does not know if she will be able to overcome her fears of her past but the unexpected kindness Gavin shows to her makes her want to try.

I loved Lenore's character and spirit, especially with what she had gone through. She did not let her past dictate the rest of her life and her chance for happiness. Gavin was just the support she needed to get through her fears, he was patient and understanding.

Lenore Graves owes the Lord Vampire of Rochester a favour and now he's decided it's time to collect. Gavin Drake, Baron of Darkwood, needs a wife to fend off overzealous mortal mothers and he desires a vampire who is loyal and won't cause him too much trouble for the fifty years of their marital arrangement. Lenore wants a marriage in name only. But Gavin may just change her mind...

I was pleased to see that the author decided to change things up a bit with this book (i.e. not another vampire/mortal romance) and I had actually hoped to see more of Lenore, since I became quite attached to her in the previous entry. Still an excellent romance, but a tad wobbly in some areas (including editing). Presumably a side effect of the shift into indie publishing.

Enchanting

Loved reading this one! Though I have not read anything else or the previous books in the series , I have no doubt that they are as Enchanting and well written.
I love when a writer can go outside what has become the normal way of thinking about vampires and create an original idea.
This book offers romance, intrigue, and humor with a VERY well written story line.
I highly recommend it as a standalone novel because I had no problem connecting with the storyline or characters since as I said I have not read the previous books. Kudos and please don't stop writing!

I downloaded this because it was free, even though it was book 4. I did feel like I'd missed quite a bit jumping in at this point (my fault, I know), but honestly, I don't think reading the earlier books would have helped.

The book was okay, but the characters could have used more depth and Lenore was just a bit too stupid at times. Also, at some points, the story seemed awfully long-winded and I admit I ended up skipping bits.

I enjoyed watching how Lenore came out of her shell, managing to finally put her terrors behind her completely and not only fall in love with Gavin but learn to desire the pleasure the two could bring each other as well.

Gavin was the sum of many parts, strict when he needed to be but very kind and understanding when called for. A vampire full of contradictions he really came into his own by the end of the book, as did the heretofore timid vampiress Lenore.

Good easy read

This was a nice vamp love story. I like these when I don't want something too deep or heavy. It's a fun easy summer read. Good story, loved all the characters. I will now have to read the rest of this series. If you like vamp love stories then I'm betting you will like this. I did find a few typos though so this bok could use a bit better editing, but it was not bad and not enough to take away from the story.

I truly loved reading this book, the storyline was so interesting and enjoyable as were the wonderful characters. Gavin is such a sexy, hunk and I loved the way Lenore’s personality changed from shy and frightened to cheeky and spunky. Can’t wait to read about Justus and Bethany.

Gavin a Barron rescued Lenore a battered newish vampire. He gives her time to heal before asking her to be his bride for the next fifty years. This is not your typical historical paranormal romance. Well written, flows very well. I liked it very much

Kinda drags...

It's not the worst vampire story but it is slow and kind of bogs down the tempo. At least it is cohesive and easy to follow. I can't say I would recommend the rest of the series if I had to base it off of this one alone. Maybe the others have a better pace.
