Hear me out: this is a celebrity romance featuring complex relationships, character growth, chemistry-driven romance, and a third-act breakup that made sense. Unique, memorable, and fun, Be me rebound needs a spot on your TBR.
It took a bit for me to be invested, but as soon as the author hit her stride, I couldn’t put it down.
While I enjoyed so many parts of this story, my favorite had to be the characters. The dynamic between Jace and Laurel had me hooked. Their chemistry was instant and only grew in substance as the story unfolded. I liked the fact that they pushed each other in ways others could not and their shared passion for music. I loved the fact that while they made each other better, they had to work on themselves. The communication (even the lack of it) and broad emotional range they had made their relationship realistic.
The complexity of Jace’s friendship (and one-time unrequited love) with Juliet and her husband, Shane, was so good! It added the perfect amount of drama. I appreciated the stubble glimpses into Jace’s pride and flaws as the story progressed. I admired that he didn’t lose the trait of blurting out the first thing that came to his mind. I loved seeing Laurel’s confidence in her craft and in herself grow too. The anxiety she experienced on stage and in public was wonderful to see represented. This story began with me loving Jace and disliking Laurel and then flipping the script. Finishing with me rooting for both.
Although this is a standalone, there is another series featuring the stories of several secondary characters including Shane and Juliet, who played significant roles in this book. I think would have benefited more from reading that series first, if only for context.
Side note: I thought the band names were silly until I took a look at my own playlist. Do not be quick to judge, some of the greats have the strangest names.
This was my first book by Ayra Matthews, but it will not be the last.
