Forced to retreat to his sister’s country estate to await next quarter’s funds, The Honorable Wilfred “Chippy” Chippenham happens upon Miss Charlotte Campion who is running away from her grandfather to her brother in London. Though dressed as a young man, Chippy sees through her disguise and, once she reveals her identity, tells her he knows her brother’s regiment has just been transferred to Ireland. Determined to go to London anyway, despite the dangers explained by his lordship, he finally demonstrates very forcibly her inability to defend herself.
His sister realizes that her brother has compromised Miss Campion and suggests that he marry her, not only to save her reputation but to be able to access his trust funds fully. Though Chippy promises Charlotte that theirs will be a marriage of convenience only until she is ready to assume her wifely duties, each of them begin falling in love with the other as their passion grows. Charlotte wants her husband to love her before she will submit to him.
But will a series of missteps, misunderstandings, and Chippy’s growing impatience drive them apart?
