“The Witcher meets Legends and Lattes, but spicier!” - Cameron E Quinn, author and poet
When every fantasy story comes to life and magic is real, can a man descended from darkness discover humanity is more than skin deep?
Gunnar knows only loneliness. Imprisoned for his vileblood heritage despite saving a mortal child, the unfortunate monster has spent the last ten years in solitary confinement. So when the girl he rescued returns as an adult lawyer and secures his release, the lifelong loner plans to go his own way… until his benefactor’s apartment is destroyed in hellfire.
Certain the attack was retaliation for his freedom, Gunnar flees with her to a frontier town of similarly outcast mythological creatures. But as his loyal companion begins to speak of love, he’s convinced his evil ancestry will ruin everything they’ve built.
Unable to understand his emotions and battling a vindictive foe, can this brooding antihero embrace a future he could never have imagined?

Blood on the Taiga is the first book in The Earthen Calamities Series by E. Anders. I loved the look of this book the moment I laid eyed on it, snapping up a copy I leapt into it and devoured it in a matter of hours. I am so glad I stumbled on it as it proved to be a fantastic post-apocalyptic, dystopian fantasy with a slow-burn romance, plenty of action, drama, adventure, survival, magic, found family, protective ‘anti-hero’ MMC, grumpy-sunshine factor, opposites attract, they save each other element, violence, frontier/western setting, suspense, paranormal elements, angels, ‘monsters’/mythological creatures, light vs dark, tension, chemistry, intrigue, superb world-building, emotion, hope, and redemption. Arghhhh! This has so much going for it that I can’t possibly put it all into words without giving too much away and spoiling it for you- suffice to say that this book surprised me, in the best possible way! Ms. Anders has found a new avid fan in me, and I will be stalking, um I mean following, yes following her quite closely from now on, ensuring that I read everything she has released to the world, plus snapping up anything new that comes in the future. This definitely had a dystopian/post-apocalyptic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ feel which I loved- and Audrey and Gunner had me invested in them and the outcome of their story right from the start, and can’t wait to see where we go from here. I have the other books in the series on my TBR and will dive into them asap. Well worth the read! Happy Reading…
Thank you so much E Anders for sending me a copy of this book!!
The book follows Gunnar who was imprisoned for ten years after saving a human girl. She comes back as an adult and helps get him out. The girl, Audrey, brings him back to her apartment when there’s a big fire that forces them to flee to a town with mythical outcasts. The book was described as Legends and Lattes meets the Witcher, but spicier. And I can definitely see where that comes from. The outcasts they meet and the delicious baked goods definitely reminded me of Legends and Lattes, but the stakes are much higher like that of the Witcher.
I loved the “touch her and die” moments and the possessive attitude from the MMC. The FMC is very sweet.
The world building is really cool and I always love a good urban fantasy. The spice at the end was perfect for that slow burn. I can’t wait for book two!
This was a great exploration of relationships and community. Each made out of necessity, then bonded and sealed through vulnerability. Each character has a unique journey, and even those who remain mostly quiet reveal exciting new depth. There is a rich world to discover after reading this first book in the series.
4.25 the characters in this book are so endeared to me, i love gunnar and audrey so much. gunnar is definitely grumpy and broody but has the softest spot for audrey. they’re so different but they just make sense together. i’ve never read a romantasy that was narrated strictly from the mmc’s pov, which was a nice switch up. there wasn’t an overarching plot so would say it tended to be more character driven and gave cozy fantasy vibes. every time i picked up this book i was so excited to read!
Wow! This book went beyond my expectations and now I'm hooked. I can't wait for the next book in the series! The characters are relatable and the story hooked me, just a few chapters in. The message of love and acceptance was prevalent throughout; a favorite quote being ''Genuine love is a gift, my friend, and we don’t get to decide if we deserve it or not, because we already have it.'' I highly recommend this inaugural book from E. Anders. It's not just for fantasy fans, so give it a read!
I will be adding a new author to my follow list! E. Sanders has a knack for description, making it very easy to imagine the same smells and surroundings as the characters. While the time jumps in the story come a bit abruptly, they do a great job of helping you jump back into the story. I definitely plan on hitting follow on The Earthen Calamities Series!
After 10 years in the maximum security prison in Manhattan, Jonathan “Gunnar” wasn’t expecting to be drug from his dark hole in the ground. It isn’t till their second meeting that he’s able to truly recognize the young woman that has come to save him. With the help of an archivist, Theodore, Audrey has turned their already crazy world upside down and upset a powerful player. After Gunnar is released from the dangerous prison he has called home for crimes he committed to survive, him and Audrey escape to a land deemed independent by the Citadel. After a peaceful 6 months of co-existing, trouble decides it’s time to pay them a visit. The angel who was the warden at the Manhattan prison, decides to find Gunnar and force the Independent leader’s hand to make a decision: Gunnar or the people who seek solace in the Taiga. After the angel’s ultimatum is set, he leaves and finds Audrey coincidentally, realizing she’s not dead. After a chase through the Taiga, the town is put to the test. Will they be able to face the angel that holds a century old grudge?
In the midst of the turmoil, Audrey tells Gunnar her true feelings for him after years of harboring her feelings for the stranger who saved her all those years ago. Will she be enough to make him feel like he actually deserves to be loved despite the monster he’s been convinced he is?
This is a slow burn but when it hits, *chefs kiss*! Worth the wait!
Gunnar is a monster, a monster who had been imprisoned since he was a child just for existing, locked away from the world in darkness for a decade with no hope of escape, that is until the day he is brought out of his hole. It is bright, too bright after the years of only seeing black, he knows he is a shell of what he once was and he has forgotten how to exist in any other way, especially when confronted with people.
It turns out that he is about to meet a lawyer who says they can arrange his parole, but he doesn't believe it, he cannot believe it, it would break him far too much if it ended up being a lie. Fortunately for Gunnar, even the process of going through the motions gives him time to adjust to the possibility, plus it didn't help that the little lawyer was pretty to look at.
After months of hard work, he finally goes in front of the tribunal and finds out that a single act of kindness in his past, saving a girl from a violent death, wins his freedom and then finds out that she came back as his lawyer! This is where his story truly begins, starting with an attack of hellfire on both him and his lawyer which means that they have to flee in the middle of the night as far away from civilization as possible and that is where they end up in Nizinhy.
A small town in the middle of ice fields where they try to carve an existence among exiles, but will it be smooth running and allow Gunnar to finally accept that he is not alone, or will trouble just follow him to the ends of the earth? This is a tale of redemption, perceptions and love where even if the puke of worries is high, positivity can win and even outcasts can find what they truly couldn't ever imagine.
Blood on the Taiga is about Gunner, a mythical, vileblood creature who had been jailed for the type of creature he is. In his younger years, he saved a human girl, but that was not enough to save him until that young girl grew up to be a lawyer. Audrey, when she had the power, thought it was only right to fight for the man who saved her life. This was a turbulent relationship with so much hate surrounding Gunner, he also didn’t trust anyone, especially a human. However, she kept her word, but others fought back, and the two of them had to flee to a safe haven for mythical creatures. Once they got to the safe haven, they started to build a life, but many did not trust this vileblood man and the “human” he came with. However, they were finding peace and Gunner was finding solice in Audrey, but could that ever occur - of course it can’t because he was seen as vile. Audrey trusted him, though, and throughout the story, the two of them take turns saving each other, but in the end, could these two different creatures really make a life with each other? When the story first started, I found myself having difficulty understanding everything that was happening. However, when they finally made it to the safe haven, the story started to fall into place. I enjoyed watching him realize he didn’t have to be his past or his “kind” in the way everyone automatically assumed he would. I also loved how Audrey was a strong human among all of these mythical creatures. Both showed growth, strength, and a willingness to be more.
This is an exciting start to this new fantasy series and it had me hooked throughout. Despite saving a mortal child Gunnar has spent ten years in solitary confinement having been imprisoned for his vileblood heritage. Gunnar is shocked when Audrey the girl he rescued, having become a lawyer, secures his release from prison. His plans of continuing as a loner change when Audrey’s apartment is destroyed in hellfire in retaliation for his freedom. For safety Gunnar takes Audrey to a frontier town where other outcast mythological creatures live.
Gunnar and Audrey develop romantic feelings for one another, but Gunnar struggles to understand his emotions. However, before they can think about having a future together the couple must battle a vindictive foe. Gunnar never imagined falling in love until he met Audrey, but he is convinced that his evil ancestry will ruin everything.
The world building is immersive and I was fully transported into this story. The descriptive narrative brought both the characters and setting vividly to life. Gunnar and Audrey are likeable and relatable characters whose chemistry came across in the narrative. I loved how their slow burn romance developed, and I particularly enjoyed the brooding antihero Gunnar falling in love!
Just to be aware there are some content warnings mentioned in the blurb.
Okay, what? E. Anders has created gold with this one. This is my first time reading this fantastical author’s work and ooo yummy yummy. I have always loved fantasy and never turned down something new. Having finally watched The Witcher last year this one intrigued me immediately. Gunnar has spent a decade alone in solitary confinement for saving a mortal child. He is always being judged skin deep because of his heritage, seen only as darkness in physical form. Now the mortal child has returned. Audrey now a lawyer helps to set him free only things don’t exactly go as hoped. An apartment destroyed in hellfire begins the epic story of Gunnar and Audrey as they learn to coexist in a town of mythological creatures. Will Gunnar let down his defenses and accept the possibilities? Can Audrey succeed in softening the heart of her rescuer? This book has it all, plot, steam, growth, and cannot forget the fantasy. The real world is too dark and black and white in its rigidity if you’re looking for an escape and love a good fantasy with epic world building and a plot that pulls you in, then look no further this is the book for you. Now I cannot wait to read book two, Cursed on the Taiga, and of course the novella, Dreams on the Taiga. I’m not ready to let go of this world yet.
Looking for a fantasy with romance and plot? This is it!
I received this book as a giveaway. Having never read Anders before, I was pleasantly surprised. Her character development, world building, plot, banter, and relationships were well thought out. I found myself rooting for the underdogs, Gunnar and Audrey.
Gunnar had spent a majority of his life imprisoned due to his genetics. Audrey was instrumental in rewriting the law used to imprison Gunnar. Audrey worked to secure Gunnar’s release only to end up as a target of an assassination attempt. Gunnar rescues Aubrey and this book follows their journey over the next few years. Gunnar feels unworthy of friendship, of Audrey, and of anything good whereas Audrey sees the good in everyone and everything. The book is written from Gunnar’s POV and it was endearing to have a strong MMC that also possessed self-doubt.
If you’re looking for a fantasy with a strong plot and a bit of romance, I’d highly suggest giving it a read.
This book took me two days to read, and I have to say it is very enjoyable. I flew through it and I am very thankful it was not too long or drawn out! I LOVE a good slow-burn romance, and this had the slowest of burns, I was on the edge of my seat for the last half of the book! It's been a while since I read a 3rd person perspective book, and even longer since I've read one from the male perspective. That being said. I typically don't enjoy books from a male point of view, simply because I have more trouble relating, but this book did not make me cringe or give me the ick. When it came to Audrey, I felt like the tiny fmc that needs protection is a bit overused, I would have liked to see something different, but I do feel like it added to the plot that she was small, because, after all, one of the mmc's main points IS to be her protector. All in all, this book is a 4/5, I would recommend it, and I enjoyed it!
I was excited to find out this book was from the POV of the MMC who truly doesn’t understand why the woman gets upset with him or her thought process at all. It is a take that I will look for more of. The world building with all the myths and legends of humans becoming real is not only unique but amazingly complex. We still are dealing with good and evil but also more of a person, angel, or demon can be who they decide to be rather than what others believe about them. I was a bit thrown by the legal stuff in the beginning but it explained the world in a new way that I had not experienced before. Andres is a new author to me and after this experience I will look for more. I enjoyed trying to figure out who the side characters were based on myths and loved how each one felt unique and different from each other. I am not normally a grumpy sunshine romance fan but with Gunnar and Audrey it worked perfectly.
I'm so freaking glad this book came to my attention. Not only is the world the author created, intricate and complex, but simple and easy to understand. Things are presented in a clear manner to help connect dots and understand the big picture while catching the small details.
It isn't common to get books straight from the MMC POV, and I absolutely adored Gunnar's thought process and the way he approaches everything. Plus, it's also super adorable that we, as the reader, can pick up the context clues that he completely misreads.
Audrey is amazing and everything I love in FMC. Resourceful and smart, loyal and giving, and all without being too much on either end of the scale.
This reads as an epic romantasy, and I'm HERE for it.
Loved how this book started. Didn’t take long for me to understand this type of dystopian world, not usually a fan of it to be honest. I loved this book, I really appreciated the way the prison was described and learning how Gunnar was forced to live. It really helps you understand him as the story progresses. I loved Audrey, I loved her sweetness and how she could see the good in things. After fleeing for their lives the story takes place in an edge of the world feeling town and I absolutely loved how the story went. Gunnar can’t seem to understand that Audrey loves him. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but, I just loved this book and I have never read a book solely from the male perspective and I really enjoyed this book. Gunnar is exactly the type of alpha male I love, if only they were real! Great book, great new author find for me!
Wow Ok Wow!! I loved a lot about this one but also just liked a few areas. It was attention grabbing in the beginning but then tapered off for most of the middle. Near the end it picked up again. The middle wasn't so bad just overlong and really just about life for these two. With that being said I did become invested in these two as well as the others living in Nizhny. All different types of fantasy characters live there hiding all kinds of powers. It is very interesting learning about them. So between that and the Wow factor I easily kept turning pages. The two MC have a hard road ahead of them and each are fighting their own demons. Overall I really enjoyed reading and being in this world. I can inly imagine what this author has in store for the next book.
This book had me from the very beginning, there was just enough to keep me hooked till the end. Gunnar and Audrey were so well written in this story that it was hard not to like them. the struggles and strength with these characters made it feel like you know them and it was hard not to root for them. Audrey’s and Gunnar have to travel into a town to seek refuge due to a circumstance that left them without a place to live, but the town has creatures that are outcasted, that these two need to figure out what to do next. this book had so much from magic, world-building, drama, paranormal, suspense romantasy, danger, hope, and so much more that this book will keep you entertained till the end.
4 stars I was hooked from the start. I really enjoyed this slow burn dystopian monster romantasy. Having never read any of Anders work before, I was satisfyingly surprised. Blood on the Taiga is a complex world where monsters are the majority and are being imprisoned solely because of their DNA, but some don’t see them as monsters. Humans are the minority. A world where an Angel is evil, and monsters are good. This is the second book I have read recently where good and evil are flipped between monsters and angels, and I must say I like it. The book is written from the wonderful but moody character Gunnar’s POV which gives us a better understanding of who he is and his vulnerabilities and all and his feelings for Audrey. It is a tale reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast an old television show that I loved. This is book 1 and I can’t wait to read book 2.
I’m always a sucker for good fantasy, give me magic, found family, and a slow-burn romance and I’ll happily lose sleep. Dystopian usually isn’t my go-to, but Blood on the Taiga blended it with fantasy so seamlessly that it surprised me. I couldn’t put it down. Gunnar and Audrey settled deep in my chest and made themselves at home. Gunnar is broody, gruff, and carrying enough pain to sink a ship, but when it comes to Audrey, he’s all soft edges and unspoken devotion. And Audrey’s fierce and kind and stubborn in that quietly powerful. There’s action, danger, and tension, but also softness, hope, and cozy moments that sneak up and wrap around your heart like a blanket.
This is a twist on the usual mythological worlds where supernaturals and humans coexist. In this world Gunnar, a super natural, saved a human’s life. In this world that’s a big no no. So Gunnar ends up spending the next decade in prison, in solitary. That same human (Audrey) grows up to be a lawyer and what does she do? She gets him released. They start spending a lot of time together and things start going bad for Audrey. Gunnar fears that this could be due to the fact she is the one who got him released. In the midst of spending more time together and trying to protect Audrey, a romance begins to bloom. Will it fully blossom? Or will that romance get trampled?
I really enjoyed reading this book. E Anders has created a post apocalyptic dystopian world of so much intrigue. This has action, drama, suspense, survival, emotion, magic, and paranormal beings including angels, demons, mages, a lot mythological creatures and so much more. I loved the main characters, Audrey and Gunner, and was so invested in their relationship and how it would end. I was hooked from the beginning and I could not put it down. This is exactly the type of story I love to read and I wasn't disappointed. This was a such a great book and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.
Blood On The Taiga is the 1st book in The Earthen Calamities Series by E. Anders. This was such a good, fast read and hooked me from the 1st chapter. Gunner and Audrey are the main characters in this book with many other characters that you just can't get enough of! The world building kept me intrigued the whole book, whereas some books you have to push through but not this book. This book is a post-apocalyptic dystopia fantasy, slow burn romance, touch her and die, drama, grumpy MMC, sweet FMC, violence, suspense, paranormal, angels, monsters, mythology creatures, hope, emotion and so much more! Chefs Kiss!
I have a hard time getting into this genre, but this book grabbed me from the beginning. It was very immersive. The synopsis does have a trigger warning so do take heed as the author did not shy away from exactly what is stated. I am very much looking forward to seeing what Gunnar and Audrey do in the next book. They were very likeable characters and I felt they had some good growth as the story progressed. If you are looking for a good post apocalyptic story this should definitely be at the top of your list.
Blood On The Taiga: The Earthern Calamaties: Nizhny Book 1 by E. Anders is the beginning of an enthralling post apocalyptic dystopia, brimming with drama, grit, and incredible world building! I was truly invested in this book, unable to stop myself from devouring it iust in 2 days. Gunnar and Andrey are rich, well developed characters, and I really enjoyed seeing them blossom. Incredibly addictive and suspenseful, Anders will not disappoint. I cannot wait to get my hands on more of this series!
Another first for me this year. First book in a new series, and first book I’ve ever read by this author. I love romantasy stories , they are one of my favorites and I was not dissatisfied. I found, like other reviewers have stated, that having it written from the MMC point of view was a unique way of writing this novel. I loved the characters and the storyline was fascinating. If you love romantasy you should give this a try.
Wow! This was fan-freaking-tastic! Though I do believe this is an instance where one should not judge a book by its cover. To me it looks sci-fi, but it is most definitely fantasy romance/monster romance. I love that it's told from the MMC's pov and convincingly so. That's hard to pull off--props to E Anders! Slow burn romance, touch her and die, found family--all with a kick-@$$ plot--need I go on? The marketing is spot on when they say Legends and Latte meets the Witcher. I could see this book becoming very popular with the monster romance girlies. And yes, I already have book two.
This book is filled start to finish with characters that you want to love & get to know better. Johnathan & Audrey are the couple at the heart of it but surrounding them are a rich cast that leap off the page fully formed & vibrant. Ironically, the really sinister & hate filled angel is the only one radiating evil & venom. This promises to be a welcome addition to my fantasy library & I look forward to the next book.
This is not my "normal" fantasy read, but it was interesting to say the least. Each character in this book has a unique journey. This novel follows the MMC (main male character) point of view which was intriguing. This is a slow burn romance, dystopian vibes, monster romantasy. This novel was surprisingly good, and I would recommend it to those who love this genre.
This book provides a totally different vision of our world. But some things stay the same: good and evil, love and hate. It made me laugh, and it made me cry. Truly looking forward to the next book!
My husband read this first and enjoyed it. Then so I could talk about it with him I read it and I loved the slow burn romance usually not my thing but so well done.
