A Young Woman Got A Dream Job

Livvy Paar was working as a waiter and a sidewalk busker in Cambridge, Mass, when she got a job as a personal secretary for cosmetics tycoon, Georgia Connor. Georgia let Livvy work and live at her mansion on the shore of Lake Tahoe.

Her World Collapsed In A Moment

Life was good until Georgia died in a car accident. In a moment, Livvy lost the world she’d come to love. Worse, Livvy began to think that the car accident was rigged, and that Georgia was murdered.

She Contacted Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna

When Livvy showed up at McKenna’s office, he never could have imagined that he would become involved with modern-day pirates who were after a stolen painting worth tens of millions, a painting so valuable they would eliminate anyone who got in their way.

Then Livvy Was Kidnapped

The pirates felt invincible. But they didn’t realize what would happen when they went up against McKenna and his Great Dane Spot. Maybe they would simply kill him. Or maybe he would take them all down…

Working for a cosmetic company couldn’t have been a more perfect job.

Livvy was ecstatic when a friend of hers referred her to Georgia, the owner of a multi-million dollar cosmetic firm.

Livvy had been there for six months, and all was going so well, but then her boss got killed in a car accident.

But…was it an accident?

Livvy goes to Owen McKenna‘s office and tells him her story.

She also tells Owen that Georgia’s son told her she had to leave his mother‘s house and feels like she’s also in danger but not sure why.

Owen doesn’t really think anything about her story until Agent Ramos mentions at a meeting that there is a pirate group they are investigating that is stealing art.

The reason Owen's ears perked up was because Livvy said a guy she met said he worked on a pirate ship.

Was this guy just making a joke or does he really work on a pirate ship for this team of people that steal artwork?

As usual, lots of drama and risks happen when Owen McKenna gets involved.

And Livvy finds out she was correct.

She is in danger, but she doesn’t know why.

Art historians and those readers who enjoy figuring secret ciphering codes will definitely enjoy this book along with his wonderful descriptive writing.

You never leave a Todd Borg book without sparking your interest in some topic or learning something new about a subject.

And…you get to visit with Street, His Largeness, Blondie, McKenna, and delightful Camille. 5/5

Thank you to the author for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

It's always a pleasure to read a new adventure featuring Owen McKenna and his Harlequin Great Dane, Spot, and this one did not disappoint.

Borg's 22nd entry into the Owen McKenna series starts with its usual bang and brings back the usual cast of peripheral characters, including a few from past investigations. In this case, cosmetics founder Georgia Connor (think Estee Lauder kind of business woman) drives to her death off a winding curve close to Emerald Bay. Her secretary, Livvy, believes it was no accident, so she tracks down McKenna to help investigate, and from there, Owen and his friends (including Ramos and Diamond from law enforcement) get involved with modern-day pirates after valuable art. Of course, Spot, the Harlequin Great Dane, plays a major role in investigating and capturing the bad people.

This is chock full of appealing characters (including his girlfriend, Street, and her newly adopted daughter) and action, but what mostly shines for me is the beautiful setting of Lake Tahoe. These are perfect reads for those who find the setting a major component of a book's appeal, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to fans of JA Jance, CJ Box, and William Kent Krueger.

Thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary copy. This book (and others in the series) can be found on Amazon, Kindle Unlimited, and local libraries.

TODD BORG #22 in TAHOE SERIES, 2024

Prolific Lake Tahoe author, Todd Borg, has not one, but FIVE new books for us. In addition to his annual Tahoe series release with “private eye” Owen McKenna and his family-friendly cast, Borg is offering a similar mystery series through your not-so-average UCLA Medieval History professor, Josie Strong. who “saves the day” with improvised ancient weapons. "Tahoe Rescue" is fascinating as a literary adventure vacation among friends, while "Wilderness Vacation" engages your intellect and creativity. Both will pass your time too quickly but, fear not! – in the case of the Tahoe series, there are 21 previous and mostly independent stories. And the July release of the "Wilderness" series is the first of four, with the second available in early August, then September and October. When taken together, there is something for every aged reader, from an endearing Great Dane to an improvised “onager” or “trebuchet.” Reading either of the stories will be a feast for your curiosity.

Todd Borg's Owen McKenna series never disappoints. When you pick up one of these books-- like the latest Tahoe Rescue-- you're going to find yourself learning nuggets of local history about one of the most beautiful places on the face of the Earth as well as traveling all around Lake Tahoe itself. You're also going to find yourself immersed in a fast-paced mystery that keeps you guessing, and worrying, about one of the best casts of characters in crime fiction.

Todd Borg's characters have all been about diversity before diversity became cool. Owen McKenna is a former San Francisco homicide detective, and he has friends in local law enforcement. He is deeply in love with a scientist named Street and is willing to have their relationship be on her terms. Street is in the process of adopting a deaf child, and readers can become acquainted with life with the hearing impaired as a result.

In Tahoe Rescue, Livvy Paar is a young woman who is all too familiar with depression. She also has one leg shorter than the other and is a strong believer in yoga to help strengthen her muscles. She feels small and powerless, but she's not. Owen discovers that she's really a little steamroller when he takes on her case against his first impressions.

If I've made this partial cast of characters sound like a poster for diversity, it's not my intention. Through the course of this series, these characters have become a fictional family. It's only when finishing a book like Tahoe Rescue that I realize that, although Livvy had an odd walk and sometimes behaved strangely, none of Owen's friends treated her differently. It is so refreshing to spend time with nice people!

Of course, spending time with nice people (and wonderful dogs) isn't the only reason why I love this series. In Tahoe Rescue, I had an interesting mystery involving stolen art to solve and a thrilling escape from the bad guys through the mountains to experience. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series because Owen has a bit of a personal awakening as he helps Livvy Paar. Unfortunately, I have an entire year to wait to see what happens next.

Amazing story

Todd Borg you have done it again. This is another of your amazing books and am proud you ask me to review the book. Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. I really like the twists and turns in the book, I was totally surprised to discover the person behind all the murders. I am going to say this is a very must read book.
Thank you Todd Borg. For another great book.

Tahoe Rescue -

Ehh… this was an ok read but very unrealistic. I give it a very weak “thumbs up”. The prayer to the Earth Mother at the end was kind of the final straw for me.

We met the author at a local art and wine festival, and he signed a paper copy of this book, his latest in the Tahoe series. My partner has claimed it for her reading pleasure, so I got it on Kindle and read it at my leisure.

I will admit that the language was thick, almost overwhelming, as I got started, and I wasn't sure if it would settle in, but after about 20-30 minutes I was in for the duration. A rich story with a uniquely specific setting (much like the works of John D. MacDonald and Randy Wayne White that we discussed with Mr Borg at the festival), but instead of being the Florida scenery I'd read dozens of books in over the current century, it's set in Lake Tahoe where the weather is different although the crime seems to tie into water just as well. It's close enough to my California home that some of Owen's wanderings feel familiar.

Todd had said he'd recommend reading the newest book first, unless I had the obsession to to go in sequence. I did the latter for Travis McGee and Doc Ford, but having finished this volume in a couple of nights, I don't feel any loss at starting at the end. Since then, I've finished the first Owen McKenna book and am knee-deep into the second.

The characters are interesting, and his choice of names is very unique, from Owen's girlfriend Street to the huge harlequin great dane named Spot. The impact of wealth on behavior has been clear but not overwhelming. And the flashes of potential romance are a bit of a tease, but we know Owen will be going back to Street untainted. And the pirate involvement, and the feeling as a reader that I'm always looking around to see who's to blame, really made this an intriguing read.

As mentioned, I'm getting into the series from the beginning now, and I suppose I have a few weeks (at least) of reading before I move on to another series of his. Looking forward to it.

Todd Borg's "Tahoe Rescue" (2024) is another entertaining and gripping mystery in the Owen McKenna Mystery Thriller series. The usual cast of characters appear: McKenna and his Harlequin Great Dane, Spot, McKenna's girlfriend, Street, and McKenna's friend and co-hort in crime-sleuthing, Sergeant Diamond Martinez, along with many other returning characters in the developing series.

In "Tahoe Rescue", the death of a West Tahoe wealthy cosmetics magnate in an "accident" develops into a captivating search to discover the real circumstances of her untimely demise.

Author Todd Borg weaves into the mystery descriptions of beautiful Lake Tahoe scenery, amazing homes and boats of the wealthy, unusual skills and interests of new and interesting characters, with high-speed action and drama, including a hiking trail chase over the Desolation Wilderness. Good old fashioned sleuthing and forensics, with the loyal assistance of Spot and other amazing canines makes this an enjoyable read for anyone who loves Lake Tahoe, dog companions, and well-developed mysteries.

One can enjoy "Tahoe Rescue" as a stand-alone, or totally immerse oneself into the entire 22-volume set (this far). I plan to re-read all of them again one day, to re-visit in my imagination so many places I have seen or known of in real life. Enjoy!

He did it again!
Todd Borg just published Book #22 in his Tahoe Mystery Series, and it is a good one!

Tahoe Rescue starts and finishes on the shores of the beautiful Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, one of the most purest bodies of water in the world and the 2nd deepest lake in the USA (1645 ft). No wonder it is shrouded in beauty and secrets and the perfect backdrop to this successful book series..

This time P.I Owen McKenna and his Great Dane Spot are onto modern-day pirates who are after a million-dollar treasure and don't hesitate to kill for it.
There are night time hikes through Tahoe's forests to survive, secret messages to decypher, life threatening mountain climbs and a desperate race to save the life of an innocent young girl.
We also meet again all the familiar characters we have learned to love throughout this exciting series of Tahoe mystery novels.

I was on the edge of my seat after reading the first chapter and the suspense never lessens until the very end!

Thank you, Todd Borg, for this yet another terrifically tensive and entertaining novel!

Todd. orb never Disappoints

I have been reading Todd Borg’s books for years and he never disappoints me. Vivid details of Lake Tahoe and it’s surroundings are exactly as they are in reality.Owen McKenna and his sidekick Spot take on case for Livy with anxiety and some depression issues. The case it turns out has more twist and turns then a massive roller coaster. Owen has his back different law enforcement officers around the lake from other departments. Not to be down played is his long term girlfriend Street, Jennifer a client from an earlier case of his, his dear elderly friend Ellie and her professionally trained search & rescue dog. From lipstick/cosmetic billionaire, pirates & Jolly Roger flags, stolen artwork to a few oddball characters is a great mystery read.

To save a young woman’s life, our beloved team will dig into dirty dealings in the art world and a case of murder masquerading as an accident. Go behind the beauty with McKenna and his law enforcement friends to discover the truth of a world-class crime in the beautiful setting of Lake Tahoe.
When I read an Owen McKenna book, I feel as though I’m visiting with an old friend. I look forward to the arrival, enjoy the time together, and miss him when he leaves as I finish the book. Todd Borg always delivers a great story with wonderfully drawn characters. I hope he never retires!

fabulous mystery and the blues

I can almost hear the soundtrack to this book, it’s winding and stairs creak as they are tread upon.
I want to visit Ellie and Lizzie and Diamond and Street. They all seem like good friends I’ve encountered as I’ve devoured these books. Owen’s intelligence and likeable personage really make me smile as I read through these books.
Thank you for entertaining me through the years, I can’t wait for the next installment.

Once again an Owen McKenna book I couldn’t put down! Filled with twists and turns, great dogs (3 in this book) and a couple of scary parts I had to close my eyes for made this book one of my favorites. I after so many books, I feel like Street, Owen and their friends are friends of mine and I can’t wait for the next adventure. Added to that are the sights of beautiful Tahoe: a definite plus when you are one who no longer lives near there.

First time I have read Todd Borg. I moved to Reno 2 years ago and the fact that he is a local author writing about around Lake Tahoe and surrounding areas really got me excited. The book was very well written and I enjoyed it. I did feel like it fell a little flat at the end, not as suspenseful as it could of been but everything else was really good. I plan on reading several others of his, he has 22 books in this series.

I always look forward to a new Tahoe book. They are well-written and filled with exciting and thrilling escapades. but for me one of the very best things, besides Spot of course, are all of the interesting facts about Tahoe and the lake and its history. You can't go wrong with one of these books but I always think it is best to start at the beginning and read them in order.

I've read the entire series and this is one of the better ones. Finally we got a book that has more returning characters. My biggest critique of the series is that we meet so many interesting people in each of the stories but they are only around for one book. This story felt more connected and emotional because it tied in a character from the first book.

I’ve read all 22 books by Todd. I spent time almost every summer in South Shore growing up. Owned a time share at the Ridge for over 30 years. Todd’s books bring back many great memories. Just saw Todd at the Mt. View Art &Wine festival. Keep on writing about Tahoe, Owen and Spot, Todd!

This is another one of my favorite series. One of the reasons I love it is the setting at Lake Tahoe (spent many a vacation there-skiing, beaching, relaxing). Owen and his "family" and friends are all great characters. I must admit that Owen gets in many tight spots but always manages to survive.
