His heart may be cold, but when it comes to her, he would set the world ablaze...
The task was simple.
Finish school, get discovered, and then I’d have it all. The fame, the money, and the hordes of groupies.
That was until I noticed Poppy Reeves, the girl who lived two doors down. All these years, and I can’t believe I never saw her.
I never thought my black heart would feel something. Especially for a girl who constantly gets bullied for her looks.
Out of everyone, she is the only person who truly understands the real me.
But when I start feeling things I shouldn’t, I do what I always do - I run.
And now, because of her, I’ve never been the same.
Five Summers is perfect for fans of…
- MF (Male/Female) Romance - Bad Boy Vibes - Good Girl - Opposites Attract - Touch Her And Die - Teenage Crush - Enemies To Lovers - Burn The World Down For Her Vibes - Dual POV
DNF @ 10% - this independent “not like other girls” badass girl who is smart and not easily manipulated and gives back as good as she gets…. And a VIRGIN… well, she gets on her knees fully voluntarily for a guy, who she knows doesn’t give two shits for her and who regularly hangs out with and screws her mean-girl bully…. At 10% WTF - I kept waiting for her to tell him to go to hell or to dump her Mac and cheese in his lap… but no she just starts slurping his dick like a pro with no coercion at all. I’m sure that will go real well at school when all the bullies find out she’s handing out blow jobs now. Who would do this?? Certainly not the character that the author has presented to us. We are at 10% in a nearly 600 page book. Waaaaaaaaay too early for her to sucking the “hero’s” dick completely consensually. He was wondering where she’d rank on his list that ranks all the hos at school who give him, and his equally disgusting buddy, blowjobs. Gross. I need a heroine with a little self respect.
Also the heros POV sounds like a middle age woman is narrating, not a high school band bro. Completely insufferable and ridiculous.
It was a DNF for me. Spineless, virginal FMC and feckboy MMC with absolutely toxic attitudes to women. It really annoyed me that the FMC would cheer on the MMCs abusive attitudes to women because they were directed at women she didn't like. I also disliked the high school sweethearts angle as it felt Stockholmy.
What a book. Story about 2 lost souls that have been discouraged and put down upon by the people that should be supporting them finding love that lasts years. Even enduring a seperation and surprises these two lovers find each other again and nothing can stop them.
The spice level is hot and the plot keeps you going. Story about the bad boy getting the good girl and showing how they can be better with each other, rather than taking on the world alone.
Such a good book and such a good introduction to this series and characters.
Okayyy First of all Wow ! Im truly so proud of Eve's work . This Good Girl x Bad Boy tropes always gets me !!! the way the author portrayed Xander and the way Poppy is portrayed as the good girl . He plays guitar , he likes to sing , he is a rockstar . In college they meet and there are damn too good chapters and the spice omg!!!! It was too good !! I really loved the book and what i loved the most was the Plot Twist !!!! The SINGLE MOM SECOND CHANCE TROPE !!!!! I literally love this trope soo much and the way they grovel !!!!! Gosh im rating this a 9.5 out of 10 for the plot and the spice a 4.5 out of 5 .
Loved it, but a bit wordy at times. I think it could've been shortened for sure. But the characters and their development were spot on! Loved all of them. I honestly thought we'd see some closure on Poppy's father though. Can't wait for the rest of the band's stories!!
This was a fun read for the most part. I mean, a rockstar bad boy? That's right up my alley. I will say, it was quite predictable. It kind of felt like a lot of fanfics I've read. But I still liked it and it was an easy read, if not a little long.
The spice was 🤌 top notch.
I do wish I had of looked for more reviews about the before reading though as I'm not into the whole "girl gets pregnant and guy runs away before he knows to pursue his dream then they meet years later and fall back in love" trope.
Completely consuming and absolutely stunning read! With heart break galore, scorching heat, and a soul searing connection for Xander and Poppy, Eve Campbell gives you a rockstar romance that is mind blowingly perfect as it devastates you, charms you, and keeps you on the edge. A must read of epic proportion that satisfies in every way!
Xander is done with his small town, his dad, everything. The second he's done with school he's out of here, music is his soul, his heart, and he's following that dream as far as it will take him. But he didn't see Poppy coming and now that he's tasted her, heard her, and had her in his life, he'll never be the same.
Literally can't say enough good stuff about this book! It sucks you right in, breaks little pieces of you, gives you MC’S you can't get enough of, and it is an absolutely gorgeous read. Lots of triumphs and failures, growth, change, and above all else, love that just burns bright and leaves you with that giddy meant to be feeling. Put it on your tbr, grab it now, just read it and prepare yourself to be totally captivated!
I really liked this story although I do get frustrated when the guy is never searching for the girl and they are thrown together. The story of two young high school seniors and their contrasting families is a good read although I wanted to smack Xander for how he treated girls. Considering how he felt for his mom I would have thought different. It was sad how they parted and the things he did. Even though he said he never had sex with the other girls oral sex is sex. Any contact is sex. I was interested in what happened between him and the blond he took to his room but nothing was said. Also when in Australia the people spoke like we do and it was hard to remember where they were. The characters were well done can't wait to read the next one. I have read from this author before and like her books. This is a good read.
I almost gave up on this one! The first half of the book focuses on them as teenagers and it was almost too much of it for me. I felt a bit odd reading about teens having dirty sex. I understand she wanted the readers to get to know where the characters came from but for me I feel like there was way too much time spent on their teenage years. I would have liked more story on the back end where they reunited. I am NOT saying I did not enjoy the book. I actually found myself enjoying it very much once they were adults and i was not ready for the story to end. I am glad there are other books in the series because I found myself really enjoying this "band." As much as I want more of Poppy and Xander, I want just as much more about band members Ace, Nate and Theo. I have already stared book 2!
This book is my favorite genre and has plenty of spice so no complaints there. The story was interesting but I have to admit my pet peeve is when writers from other countries (could not find any information as to where Eve comes from but judging by the band going to Australia and the warm comments about that country and the people I am thinking that is her roots) attempt to write American rock stars. They should do more research into American by in slang and terms. It is very distracting when it goes way wrong. If you are in it for the spice this book has plenty and the story has a bit of a twist. If I am seeing correctly there are some follow up books coming. If they are on Unlimited I will give them a shot .... otherwise....maybe not
The bones to this story are what kept me reading. The repetitive monologues and narratives throughout the whole book had me skimming most paragraphs. Poppy was my favourite, Theo next. They had a pretty solid personality. Xander, our lead, was a typical badboy, which was the point, but it was only the last few chapters that I started to like him. All the other characters, other than poppy and the band members, were the most annoying, unrealistic, tempered characters that made the book annoying. I get the point was to create an unloving environment so that the chosen/found family was deeper, but it just added to my want to dnf. However, I skimmed and persisted. I don't like to dnf. The ending was cute and happy. Overall, the spice was good and but too much of it.
Another enjoyable rockstar romance! Zander & Poppy’s story began when they were in high school~he was the drop-dead gorgeous poor boy with an attitude, with an alcoholic father that beat him regularly and had no money for food, and she was the too curvy loner that the popular girls bullied & called fat. They bonded through their love of music~he wanting to be a famous rockstar & she with an absentee father who was in a band. She fell for him hard & their relationship was a train wreck. Zander left town and Poppy to chase fame and she was left picking up the pieces of what he left behind. Years later they met again, and found they still had that spark between them, though their lives were vastly different. This book had a lot of spice and a definite HEA.
Five Summers should have been a 5-star. Second chance and rockstar romances are my two favorite tropes. However, several things turned me off. First, I’m too old to be reading high school sex scenes and it contains page after page after page… Second, out of the five main and secondary characters, only one has decent parents. The others were either physically and/or mentally abusive. Third, the book was way too long and could easily be shortened and made a better story without all the repetitive sex scenes. I did get caught up in the story and am interested enough to want to read Ace’s story.
Poppy and Xander were so good together and they both suffered so much. The guys in the, band were great, Alex was adorable and I didn't skim past any parts of the story. The only thing was I think the writer is not from America and the characters are supposed to be American from what I could tell. She used the word mum a few times, called chips "crisps". She also called the movers " removers" and I've never heard that the way she used it. Other than that, I really enjoyed this book.
I don’t usually give books 5 stars but I loved this story. I also liked that it wasn’t a short story which most Kindle unlimited books seem to be. The characters and chemistry was fantastic. My only complaints (which are minor from most books I read from KU) are the couple of edit/grammar misses which usually drives me nuts. I also hate that you are trying to write as an American author but your probably not. You don’t have to fake it to get true readers to enjoy your book. Looking forward to another book by you…
4⭐️ I love me a second chance romance! Xander and Poppy live 2 doors down from each other most of their lives but he doesn’t notice her until now. I hated Poppy’s mother so much and his father just needed a bullet and these two lost souls - bad boy x good girl, find a connection through music and believing in each other. Fast forward 5 years, these two meet again and there is so much angst and hurt but I loved reading their love story even when I wanted to slap both of them!
The con- sometimes there were just a lot of words or repeated sentences and this book could have been condensed a little… overall the story/plot won me over.
I was looking for a slightly over the top drama/angsty read and this fit the bill perfectly. Some of it seemed a little far fetched, but then again it's been a long time since I was in high school and who knows what kids today are doing. I really like the dual point of views between Poppy and Xander, and even the couple random chapters where Ace was telling the story. Gave a good outsiders perspective to what was going on with the main couple. Overall an enjoyable read. 3.9 stars.
There is so much wrong with this book that there isn't even a downhill, it just starts and stays bad. Everything is told to the reader, constantly and repetitively. With little shown, there's no opportunity to dive into the story, to wonder and analyse, it never gets deep enough for that. There's no continuity, these characters who are on page emotionally intelligent can't communicate with each other. The language skips between robotic inner thinking, to purple prose. Something you expect to find from searching 'chatgpt write me some damaged rockstar smut'.
I can't emphasize enough how incredible this book is! From the very first page, it grips you tightly, fractures your heart in the most beautiful way, introduces characters you'll never forget, and delivers an unforgettable reading experience.
It's a story brimming with triumphs and setbacks, moments of profound transformation, and, above all, a love that blazes with intensity, leaving you with a sense of destiny that's both thrilling and exhilarating.
I loved this book. It is an extremely emotional, painful, poignant story that everyone should read. Poppy is extraordinary strong and resilient, and Xander is a tormented man with a wounded heart and soul looking for love and acceptance. Their story is painfully beautiful. Just a heads up, there are very explicit sex scenes, so if that’s not your thing then you shouldn’t read it. I highly recommend this book!!!
I did love this book but do feel it could’ve been shorter. Not because of the storyline but rather the repetitive information. I felt like things were said a few times to remind the reader of certain storylines but didn’t feel it was necessary to restate them later in the book. Again, I did love this book and the characters.
I believe this is a new author, and if so, this is a good first novel. I love a rock star romance, and I really enjoyed the characters. They haven't had the easiest time, and I liked the character growth. I think a good editor or beta(s) would help as small details would give this read a bit more polish. Looking forward to the next in this series.
Poppy and Xander’s story is great. I loved how they first met and got together. However, the book gets very wordy at times and repetitive when the characters are in their heads talking to the reader. Many thoughts are repeated again and again when it’s not necessary. So I found myself skimming through those pages to get on with the plot.
Wow, I just loved this book. This is my first time reading this author and I can't wait for the second book. I just love Xander and Poppy. I can't wait to read the next book, looking forward to it. Can't wait. Def 5 stars.
DNF @ 34% I tried. I really tried to keep reading but the repetitive monologues were too much. It was very wordy and I feel it could’ve been condensed. The idea of the story kept me reading but I just couldn’t get past the cringey overuse of some words and phrases.
Poppy is a pick me girl. The outcast who gets a sliver of attention and she runs with it. Xander is a popular guy who all the girls want and any time he is in the area poppy is watching him.
