Salud, las finanzas, la familia, el futuro - la vida está llena de preguntas. Hay cuestiones más profundas, también. ¿Quién soy yo ¿Por qué estoy aquí? ¿A dónde voy?
Dr. John Blanchard is an internationally known Christian preacher, teacher, apologist and author. He has written 30 books, including two of Britain's most widely used evangelistic presentations, Right With God and the booklet Ultimate Questions. The latter has over fourteen million copies in print in about 60 languages.
Have you ever wondered: Does Prayer Change Things? Or have anyone ever asked you this question before and you don’t know how to answer it? This book answers this question rather wonderfully. It is not only biblical in the answer but also practical while also written in a vocabulary and style friendly for a general audience. This is the third booklet in the Crucial Questions Series by the late theologian RC Sproul that I am reviewing. I appreciated that Sproul wrote this and also made it available for free on Kindle and cheap in paperback format. Of the three books I’ve reviewed thus far this is probably my favorite one. The book itself is divided into six chapters. I love how the chapters in this book is alliterated with the letter P. The first chapter is titled “The Place of Prayer” while chapter two covers the purpose of prayer and chapter three is on the pattern of prayer. Chapter four is the practice of prayer and chapter five is titled “The Prohibition of Prayer” and finally chapter six is on the power of prayer. One of the best thing about this book that I like is how Sproul answered the question of why pray if God is in control of all things or know all things. God commanding it is sufficient enough for us as Christians to pray to God. Sproul also pointed out that prayer changes us and that alone should be a reason why we should pray. Of course prayer doesn’t change God’s mind but Sproul points out it does changes things (Location 88). What was very helpful from Sproul was his illustration of how spouses who know each other very well still communicate with words even if they know each other and what each other has to say; likewise the point of prayer is a relationship with God so similarly we should pray. This book was also practical and I appreciated chapter three being an exposition on Jesus’ teaching on prayer. Chapter four covers the four types of prayers that you hear often taught to Christians with the acronym “ACTS” which stands fro Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication. I recommend this book and this was theologically stimulating and also spiritually edifying.
This is a booklet rather than a book…only 30 pages long. The print font is very small…so I had to hold it close to my face and have good lighting to read it.
I would characterize the book as a very concise coverage of the standard questions that people have when considering the Christian life and faith. These issues are presented clearly…and answered in a way that I would say is straight down the middle of orthodox Christian doctrine and teaching.
For Christians this is a book that organizes in a concise and logical format the essentials of what we believe. Because of its small size and low cost…it could be used effectively as a booklet to give to people we are witnessing to who have deeper questions that cannot be covered in a single discussion. It can also be used by Christians as a quick reference to pinpoint key issues that come up during discussions about our beliefs…after the fact…that we do not have an in-the-moment facility and familiarity with at the time.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. Within its intended brief size and scope it is very well written. Although I would hesitate to use the word “brilliant”…I think the author John Blanchard here has very capably achieved his purpose in presenting a condensed, usable version of Christian beliefs.
A really good, fairly comprehensive booklet. My biggest beef is typos. John Blanchard needs to get himself a proofreader. But I'm still going to give it to people. Good stuff.
This is an excellent evangelistic booklet. It's too pricey to hand out like a tract, but it's great to give to people who have more interest in learning about Christianity than a simple tract can give them. The summary of the faith is very well done and clearly presented for people unfamiliar with Christianity. I recommend adding this to your arsenal of evangelistic tools. Blanchard's website claims it is available in a variety of languages. I saw it both in Spanish and Simplified Chinese on Christianbook.com.
Ultimate questions is really a short publication that is saying let me explain what the Christian belief of the gospel is in the style of a number of questions you may or may not have. Systematic and workman like, it is one of this publications you would expect be given away at the door as you leave a Christian event. Very well set out and easy to read, and says it all briefly and succinctly.
A good evangelistic booklet, of higher quality than others I've seen. It briefly explains God's reality and nature, the need for a Savior, how to be saved, and how to live as a saved person. Verses are quoted without reference, though all references are listed at the end of the booklet, categorized by chapter.
It says, "in God's sight all sin is equally serious," but that statement would be more biblical without the word "equally," since the Bible speaks of degrees of sin.
Questions asked and answered: Is anyone there? Where do I go from here? Is God speaking? Can religion help? What is God like? Is there an answer? Who am I? Why the cross? What went wrong? How can I be saved? Is sin serious? Which way now?
