I borrowed this book thanks to my Kindle Unlimited subscription and read it on my tablet using the Kindle app.

In this book, we are presented with a very well-executed exploration of how new AI tools and future developments can be perfect and definitive assets in a world where war is slowly escalating. Divided into very clear chapters, the author provides a quick overview of what could be, without forgetting the past. I really enjoyed the summary of the main battles of the past and how the new AI tools could be game-changers in current conflicts. This book is a perfect start to create an internal and interesting debate.

The book is a quick and interesting read, spanning just over a hundred pages. It is so well-written that you will devour it in no time. If you are interested in this topic, you will find it to be an excellent read, and thus, I completely recommend it to you.

The most fascinating aspect of this book is also one that the author underplays in the description. Before I get to that, however, let me talk about the book in general.

Mr. Rump has put together a fairly thorough overview of artificial intelligence and warfare. After first touching base with a general description of AI's status within the military, he addresses the concept of "war," in general, providing a brief introduction to what amounts to game theory and "war logic," and then what ended up being second-favorite part of the book--a well-written, concise history of warfare.

Here, the focus isn't just on what would eventually become AI (although, for obvious reasons, war technology and its evolution is a major point of discussion), but also (perhaps even moreso) on the overall strategies that built upon each other. From the earliest recorded histories until today, the author clearly identifies the basic underpinnings of the era. For example, in ancient times, there is an acknowledgment of warfare being principally rooted in the ideas of direct physical confrontation on the battlefield and the ways in which opposing armies would try to exploit that paradigm to surprise or confuse the enemy with things like flanking maneuvers and ambushes, which, when juxtaposed with the described development through today, provides a nearly three-dimensional view of the way that concepts from the past have been built upon by more specialized, technology-driven advancements as time marched forward. This is useful not only for the history, which itself is interesting enough, but a lens through which the reader can better appreciate the advent of the book's subject--the AI revolution, including, among other things, autonomous decision-making by non-human actors. Depending on how one views it, AI is framed less as a kind of Stephen Jay Gould punctuated equilibrium where things remain the same for long periods of time before making changes all at once, and more as the most recent dominant innovation in an endeavor continually and consistently becoming more complicated.

Note, because the book does such a good job building upon this general thesis (war changes--sorry Ron Perlman), one of my very few quibbles with the book is that history is not explored to a greater extent. (Ancient warfare should not lump together everything from thousands of years BC through medieval times. As Mr. Rump forcefully argues, war is always evolving, so there were many such changes within those thousands of years.) I understand that the focus of the book is not on history, but even more data is always appreciated. Perhaps we'll get more in the next edition.

We are also given what seems to me and the journeyman's knowledge of the field before reading the book, a rather complete view of how artificial intelligence in the military is being implemented--not only how to respond on the battlefield, but also how to prepare for the conflict with reconnaissance, cyber security, and so on. Weapons and systems are covered with enough depth to make the discussion concrete and give the reader real examples to consider, but the book doesn't get bogged down into Jane's-style weeds, with a focus on particular aspects, models, and so on. In short, Mr. Rump provides enough without providing too much.

The best parts of the book, however, come mostly toward the end: the ethics. When one reads about this stuff in places like magazines and tech website blurbs, the focus is almost always on the deployment of a system or what it does, how it operates, and so on. Very rarely does the discussion reach the fascinating and horrifying question of whether it's a good idea to outsource questions of life or death to computers. In Mr. Rump's book, questions are raised regarding both that basic moral quandary (is this moral?) and effectiveness (is this wise?). That second question is also one that isn't often entertained. We spend so much time slobbering over the next hot new tech, even if it's going to hurt people, that discussions rarely point out drawbacks of warfare's evolution from an effectiveness standpoint. Mr. Rump raises some very interesting questions involving things like "Adversarial Attacks" whereby a foe with knowledge of the system's programmed and predictable decision-making process would be able to trick it into acting a particular way, strategic decisions about where best to spend time and resources (e.g., what targets should be chosen), and Hollywood's beloved trope about the wisdom of outsourcing the ability to kill to an entity we can't fully control. These are the questions with which the reader comes away and would provide a logical bridge to yet another way to consider how these modern questions of wisdom and effectiveness are ultimately permutations of the same ones that have been asked for literal millennia. Put simply, the questions are raised and answers are suggested, but at no time does the reader get the sensation that Mr. Rump is preaching at him and dictating how one ought to feel. That lends greater legitimacy to the rest of the book. (And it is much more enjoyable to learn when you're not being self-righteously sermonized.)

There are some audiences to whom I would *not* recommend the book--namely, those looking for a breezy, magazine-style introduction to what's often framed as an exciting new innovation--but if you've come across this book and this review, that's not you. Instead, because of the completeness with which Mr. Rump reviews the subject, with the historical survey of warfare, the present status of implementation, and what kinds of things we expect to see in the future (e.g., I thought the insight about how we expect Russian versus Indian evolutions to differ was particularly thought-provoking), those ethical and pragmatic questions referenced above, and the clear, facts-only style in which they're presented, the reader will finish this relatively short introduction with much more information than that with which he started *and* an appreciation for the age-old issue of whether, just because we can do something, doesn't necessarily mean we should.

Five stars.

I am a Ukraine war humanitarian and a trainer of artificial intelligence. I have a keen and vested interest in drone warfare and the integration of artificial intelligence with automated weapons.

First, I want to thank Mr. Rump for writing such a thorough and comprehensive report on how the military can integrate artificial intelligence. I believe this report would be invaluable to military officers and specialists all across NATO.

That being said, Mr. Rump's book reads like a report, not a book (which may have been his intention all along). While thorough, it lacks depth and vivid examples. And it certainly gets more and more repetitive the further you read.

I'm going to be honest. I started rolling my eyes after seeing the following lines over and over and over again.

"analyze enormous amounts of data in real-time and make informed decisions"
"assisting in the planning of attack and defense strategies."
"by processing large volumes of data, AI-driven systems can identify patterns and trends"

The author makes these points (and several others) every 3-4 pages, but then doesn't back it up with strong examples of how. So the entire book is just a different topic, with these lines repeated and barely even reworded.

It certainly provides a strong framework, but without examples and imagined scenarios, the reader can't visualize or feel the impact of the author's points. If I was an army colonel who is 40+ years old with no Ai experience, I would likely go, "mmm...cool", toss it aside, and forget about it.

When the author gives examples, it lacks depth. For example, in the beginning of the book, the author brings up historical battles to illustrate the evolution of warfare throughout time.

The author mentioned several battles including Cannae, Seige of Byzantium, Agincourt, Tsushima, and Stalingrad. Very important battles. However, the author doesn't really dig deep into what made those specific battles so special.

You can switch out the Seige of Byzantium with ANY other seige where the defenders won and make the same exact points. Same could be said about Stalingrad.

Battle of Tsushima (1905). Author could have switched that out with any other naval battle and made the same exact points.

Lack of depth and solid supporting evidence existed throughout the book. The case studies in the center. I was so excited to see Ukraine mentioned and the author breezed past it in 1.5 pages without explaining why Ukraine was so significant.

Again, he could have switched out Ukraine with Syria and no one would notice. He didn't even mention Russia. How do you talk about Ukraine without mentioning Russia? Just Ukraine is complex. Drones are important. So is cyberattacks. That's it.

"Studies show that the deployment of AI-driven logistics systems has increased the availability of supplies by up to 30%." Which studies? I'm not the type of reader who expects writers to cite, but if you mention studies, you need to name the study.

My favorite part of the book was the overall structure and organization. Mr. Rump covered very, very important topics, but he didn't back up his points with any sort of depth.

The author of this book does a good job of going through history and telling about how technological developments changed how war was carried out and the effects on society. This includes showing how industry changed the deadliness of war and how many soldiers could be utilized. It also talks about the effects of nuclear proliferation and the reanalysis of how war was done. These are just two examples of how the author explores this area. The author used good examples to show how strategy has been used throughout history to give various parties an advantage in important battles. The author discusses and establishes the use of AI for reconnaissance and prediction. The author also discusses the use of autonomous systems and the controversies surrounding it. The author shows how AI is used to improve precision tracking and elimination of enemy targets with minimal collateral damage. The author writes about how algorithms systems can learn and adapt to improve performance in future endeavors. The author shows how AI is being used in current conflicts like Yemen and Ukraine. This author does a good job of delineating new ethical considerations in modern AI warfare. Overall, I found this book to be an educational read that provides food for thought. I recommend it if you are interested in modern warfare and where it may be going.

“Strategic Algorithms: How AI is Reshaping Warfare: War Logic and Strategy” explains the many ways AI technology is changing military strategy the way wars are and will be fought in the future. Some of the major points covered by Author Rump in this book:
AI is already an indispensable element of today’s warfare. For instance, one critical use is in autonomous systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles or combat vehicles.
Another valuable use of AI is to identify pattersn/trends in huge volumes of data that exceeds the capability of human analysis. Decision support systems are designed to analyze historical data, using known historical data of past conflicts all over the world, to provide informed recommendations to military commanders. Historical battles show the importance of intelligence & reconnaissance, providing logistics, mobilizing reinforcements & the psychology of war.
Risks include ensuring the reliability of AI systems in changing environments, and the ethical and legal concerns in relying upon AI for decision-making.
This book is packed with information. Ironically, what it lacks, when compared to other non-fiction books I have read, is a personal touch; it is rather dry and text-book like, missing that subtle bit of humanity to make it an engaging read.

Fascinating look at the future of warfare

Is a must-read for anyone curious about the intersection of technology and military strategy. This book does an incredible job of laying out how AI is not just a buzzword but a transformative force in modern warfare. The historical context provided makes it clear how far we've come, and the detailed analysis of current trends is both enlightening and a bit chilling.
The author explains complex concepts in a way that's easy to understand, even if you're not a tech expert. The case studies are particularly engaging, showing real-world applications of AI in military settings. I found the discussions on ethical and legal implications thought-provoking, raising important questions about the future of AI in conflict.
However, I did feel that some sections were a bit too dense with technical jargon, which might be overwhelming for readers new to the topic. A bit more simplification could have made these parts more accessible.
Overall, this book is a comprehensive and eye-opening guide to the role of AI in warfare. It's informative, well-researched, and will definitely leave you pondering the future of military strategy.

This book was quite interesting. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is well-written, presented, and clearly thought-out, but it was more like 3.5 starts because I wanted more! I think this is a good sign because otherwise it wouldn't bother me! I feel like the writer got so close to providing more in-depth analysis and information in each chapter, and then...went right on to the next one. I suppose one benefit may be that the chapters were pretty short - but I really wanted to read what else the writer had to say! The chapter on AI-specific ethics was very interesting, but I wished that the ethics of each topic they wrote about could be incorporated into each chapter because then we, as readers, could begin to think about what it all means. What does it mean if so much of the decisions that are made by our industrial military complex are made and executed by AI? What does that mean for the people who are coding the AI? What does it mean for ordinary citizens? These are really important questions that I think we all want answers too! All that said, I would love a second book from the writer with these points in mind.

A Comprehensive Guide to AI's Role in Modern Warfare

Eric Rump‘s "Strategic Algorithms: How AI is Reshaping Warfare" describes how AI is transforming warfare.
There are six chapters in the book and it starts with an introduction about AI's role in data analysis, threat recognition, and real-time response in modern warfare.
The book explains how AI is improving decision-making, gathering intelligence, and managing logistics. The author uses historical examples and case studies from recent conflicts like Ukraine and Syria to describe how it works in reality.
What I found particularly engaging is the balanced discussion of AI's potential benefits and the ethical and security challenges, such as system vulnerabilities, ethical dilemmas, and the potential loss of human control. The book's emphasis on responsible and ethical AI deployment in military contexts is both timely and essential.
This book is a must-read if you are curious about how AI can change warfare and global security.

Utterly banal, repetitive, poorly outlined, and virtually devoid of analytical rigor. Rump’s work is largely speculative, although highly representative of the current hype surrounding a transformation in warfare that result from AI.
