To be fair, this book could have been a new foray into a subgenre of a genre i already love. Back in 2008 when A New Earth initiated within me a shift that would lead me into new peaks within myself, I was aware that i would probably never see a book as ground breaking on a conscious level again, at least not for a very long time. Eckhart Tolle’s ideas about breaking away from the ego and all the facet of the ego seemed innate in me, as if he had awakened a giant that had been asleep since my soul decided to come back to earth to begin this journey. That is why when I decided to review Ged Summer’s I thought it would be right up my alley. Anything involving mediation has to be good right?
This title is composed more like a textbook for students, and also reads like a medical school book. I found myself skipping around chapters at some points in order to get a better idea of what the writers were trying to convey. Summer uses a lot of anatomical language to explain the mechanics of the human body; and how organs work in concert with one another to effect the mind, body, and spirit. She goes from system to system, and organ to organ, cell to cell, and atom to atom. Each chapter features a meditation on becoming acquainted with your vessel cell by cell and molecule by molecule. Alot of what I read in this book reminded me of the buddhist reflections on repulsiveness (Paṭikkūlamanasikāra); which is an ancient practice. The format is similar with different approaches and focusing on different things. But the spirit of the ancient Tibetan practice is evident to the trained eye. Like any kind of meditation, the methods put forth in this book is for those looking to center themselves with an emphasis on improving their physical body via the meditations set forth in this text. There are many avenues to the true self, the center, or the ‘observer.’ The route offered by Ged Summer is only one of these. If you think that this is an exit on the road map to the infinite then go buy this text and begin your journey today.
