Lucky Strickland has lost everything. First it was her dignity and then it was her husband and now it’s her house. She’s penniless, stuck at the McDonalds in Bee Cave, Texas, and her only hope, her brother-in-law, just stole her car.
Eighteen months ago, she’d been the wife of rock-and-roll legend, Ricky Strickland. Rock-My World, their reality TV show, was the number one. Then, on the live season finale, Ricky had introduced her to his mistress and their three daughters. Lucky stormed out. Ricky followed after her and wrapped his car around the nearest oak tree.
Will Brodie, Lucky’s bother-in-law, will do anything to get her back home. Lucky needs to grieve for her husband and take care of the lawsuit the realty TV network filed. They want their money back OR for her to film a new realty TV show—with Ricky’s children. Two months ago, Ricky’s daughters lost their mother to cancer—now they only have Will.
If Will can get Lucky to open her heart to the girls and to him, maybe he can finally give Lucky the family she’s always wanted.
This was a nice quick read that puts you in the good feels. I would say this has some heavier subject matter than a lot of quick rom coms. This had a death of a cheating spouse but also the death of a parent. The romance is cute and the guy in this is a golden.
This book has been sitting on my Kindle for awhile -- at this point I'm not even sure how it go there -- but, I began reading it a month or so ago and had to stop, and then, the other night I was finally able to get back to it.
This story is quirky, humorous fun. A fun read that takes you into the life of Lucky who has hit rock bottom. She had been there before, so she was ready for the fight, what she wasn't ready for was her dead cheating husband's brother and said dead husband's three girls. Not to mention the help of her best friend's mother. Oh my goodnesss, Mama is a hoot. I have to say she is my favorite character.
The heat level on this book is mild and if you're looking for a real angsty story this isn't it. It's enjoyable for what it is. And, sometimes I just need a light, fun read in between the heavier more intense books I love.
Getting lucky is book 2 in this series, I didn't realize that and haven't read book 1. However, I do believe I will at some point -- lots of books on the TBR. I would recommend reading book 1, Place Your Betts, but I don't feel that it is necessary to enjoy this book. There is a third Marylyn, Charlie, and I hope the author plans to write her story soon.
Didn't like this one as much as the first one. The hero was WAY too perfect and adoring. I like sweet, but this was too sweet for me. All of the characters could have used more depth. The pacing felt very rushed, and the end just cuts off on you. The humor was still there, though in this book I felt it mainly came from the secondary characters, Mama Cherie. Whom I LOVE. If it wasn't for her, I'm not sure if I would have even finished this book.
After enjoying the first book so much, this one was sort of a let down. Will read the third book for sure, and I'm hoping the author spends a little more time fleshing out the characters and making them real.
As a part of a reading challenge, this book checked off a box or two and I definitely lucked out. A cute story that turned into a quick read because I just couldn't stop. Just enough suspense, humor and sappiness. Looking forward to reading more books by this author!
A sweet, funny, and totally unbelievable story I couldn't help but like. The romantic lead was too perfect and the heroine (Lucky) too clueless. I haven't read book #1 which could possibly have helped fill in some of the back story. But I couldn't stop reading. In the end I was sorry it was over! The series ("The Marilyns ") centers around 3 BFFs (Lucky, Betts and Charlie) who each dress up as Marilyn Monroes and do all sorts of crazy hijinks. Book #1 is about Betts. I imagine there is a 3rd book about Charlie which will likely fill in a few blanks about this story. Would I read #1 and #3? Sure if they were free from Amazon via BookBub like #2!!
REALLY 3 3/4*stars SOME LAUGHS AND A LITTLE TEARY AT TIMES BUT A CUTE STORYLINE AND THERE WAS TOO MUCH EYE ROLLING. I LOVED WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT GETTING OLD, THAT WAS SO TRUE. I ENJOYED THIS BUT NOT AS MUCH AS THE OTHER BOOKS, SOMETHING JUST SEEMED TO BE MISSING IN THIS ONE; ;}
I started out being sad for Lucky but ended up being happy for her.
Lucky was married to rock star, Ricky Strickland. She could buy anything she wanted. Can you imagine paying $14,000 for a pair of boots? Not me! But that came to an abrupt stop when Ricky died. That happened immediately after he introduced his mistress and their 3 children on their reality TV show. What a shock when his will was read and Lucky learned that all he left her was the contents of her closet. Now it was huge with lots in it but what about the house and everything else? Turned out that Ricky was a good guy just not a good husband. Too embarrassed to tell her friends what happened, Lucky was living in her car. Could things get worse? Yes. The TV station was sueing her. Unless she agreed to do another reality show for them, with Ricky's daughters.
Will, Ricky's manager/brother and Lucky's brother-in-law, entices her to go back home. Where he is living with his nieces. I liked the girls. I couldn't help love the 5-year-old. She was so cute. The teen hated everybody and everything but just wanted to be loved. Lucky's friends (the other Marilyns) were terrific. Everyone should have friends like them. Will was exceptional at negotiating contracts and could get the best deal possible but wasn't too bright when it came to relationships. He'd loved Lucky since he first saw her but never let her know.
If you like books with ups and downs but have happy endings, you'll like Getting Lucky.
I will admit to being reluctant to read this book based off the blurb, but I shouldn't have worried at all. Lucky is a spitfire, and even though her late husband battered her heart badly, she's not going to roll over and give up. I admired her for seeing a need, even though it tore at her, and filling it. She may not have been able to be what she wanted most naturally, but she wasn't going to let her dreams go easily either. I was a little bit unsure about Will Brodie, but the moment I realized he'd been in love with Lucky since very beginning and only had her best interests at heart, he won me over. Unrequited love is hard.
The story has light moments and heavy emotional ones, but it really brings home the point you may not be able to choose who your family is, but you're able to choose your friends and to take chances on love. I loved how Katie Graykowski brought Will and Lucky together. I also loved Will's nieces and Lucky's step-daughters. They were adorable, even the moody teenager!
I had forgotten just how much I enjoy the stories that Katie Graykowski writes. I've almost started this book many times, but for some reason I always held back. Today was the right day! It's a story that is heartbreaking in a lot of ways, but with the humor involved you don't get weighed down with those depressing feelings. Guess I will have to see what else of hers I have missed.
Short and sweet, it just took them to figure out they were in love with each other, but they finally did. The ending was well rounded and made me shed a few tears because it was so sweet and thoughtful.
I really enjoyed this book written by Katie. It grabbed me at the beginning of the book and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. This was a tear jerker for me at several parts and that I liked it had so much emotion in it. Katie hit a home run with this!
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
I absolutely love this series and the way Katie Graykowski writes. It's just full of humour, sadness in parts and happiness - but with such a feel good feeling to the whole book - Lucky is such a fabulous character.
It's the second in the series, but you don't necessarily have to have read the first one, but I would highly recommend it if you haven't as it's just as fabulous as this one, but about Betts, Lucky's friend and one of the 'Marilyns'.
This one is about Lucky who is currently down on her luck. Her husband Ricky was a rock star and they had a reality show together, until he announced at the end of the series - live on air - that he'd been having an affair for years and had three children who he introduced her too! Then he went out and wrapped his car around a tree and died leaving a complete mess behind him.
The three daughters also then lost their mother to cancer and Will, Ricky's brother/Lucky's brother-in-law, took custody of them as there was no-one left and moved into Lucky & Ricky's old house. Of course to add to the problems Ricky also left no money due to bad investments and the studio wanted the money back for the show that didn't happen. So Will persuaded Lucky to do another reality show, that the studio was pressing her to do, with her and the three girls - 5 years, 11 years and 16 years old.
Will has been holding a torch for Lucky for years but she only ever saw him as her brother-in-law, but of course that started to change once they lived in the same house and started looking after the girls together. It was so lovely seeing her getting a bit of happiness with a lovely honest guy for a change. Of course I also listened to this on audiobook, as I did the first one, and I think the narrator (Pam Dougherty) is just wonderful, she really makes the book come to life. I've noticed that there isn't a third one in the series yet but I'm really hoping Ms Graykowski writes it soon!
Narration - Pam Dougherty - Fabulous! Just Fabulous! She's perfection for this series!
This is just the cutest series I've been fortunate to stumble upon. Lucky Strickland is the 6 foot tall Glamazon friend of Betts from Place Your Betts who's fallen on hard times since the death of her rocker husband, but she doesn't want any of her friends to know it. As a last ditch chance to get back on her feet, she ends up at her old home where her husband's not so secret second family is now living.
The one thing this story lacked for me was what I loved the most about the first book - our opportunity to fall in love right along with our male and female lead characters. This is a much shorter book and I wish the author would have made it a little longer and developed the falling in love part of the relationship between Lucky and Will a little bit more. Will has always been in love with Lucky from the moment he first saw her, but Lucky loved her Husband Ricky. So her transition from thinking of him as a friend to being in love with him was really quick and was missing a lot of the wooing and romantic tension that comes with someone working hard to win the other one over. I think the book focused more on Lucky building a relationship with the girls (which I loved) but would have liked more of that build up between her and Will.
BUT...I still loved it. Great Series, love Mama Cherie and her wisdom (lol)

This book was beyond cute. It was fluffy at times, but every book doesn't have to be deep and broody. Sometimes, fluffy is perfect, and this book was just that. When I first started reading, Will had me a bit worried. He seemed a teeny bit stalker-ish. But as I read further, I found out that it wasn't stalker behavior, it was unrequited love of the century behavior, which I've experienced myself.
I just could not put this book down. I plowed through it in only a few days, which is amazing considering the fact that I've been popping out of it to read other books, and to do non-reading stuff. I can't wait to read the first book in the series (which I had but didn't realize was part of the series until yesterday). I loved the characters (Mama Cherie was definitely my favorite), and even though the premise seemed really unbelievable (woman who's husband was cheating on her's children and woman doing a reality show), the book made it into something that seemed like it was the obvious thing to do. When I first read the summary, I thought it would be cringe-worthy reading about the reality show aspect of it, but thankfully it stopped before the show started taping. I'm not even sure it would have been bad if it had kept going, either, and that's really saying something.
Feel-good, fluffy bit of happiness. To all my friends that like romance novels and rom-coms, I recommend this at least a half dozen times. So. Freaking. Cute!
I got this book as a free download and I was prepared to turn my nose up at it. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. The title character Lucky Strickland had one day been the wife of a country singing star. Although unable to bear children and turning a blind eye to her husbands wayward eye, she coped by shopping, until one day, her loving hubby introduced her to his mistress & their 3 daughters. Before she can even get mad, her husband is killed in a freak car accident.
Motivated at this point by hurt, anger and a bizarre will that only leaves her the contents of her designer laden closet, she sets up shop in a local McDonald's that offers free wifi and free refills. As she sells her beloved clothing on eBay, her only thorn in her side is her brother in law, who unbeknownst to her now has guardianship of the 3 orphan daughters. He has the galling idea that they do a reality show again. Little does Lucky know they are broke.
Thru a series of events, they all end up together and she falls for the girls. The book gets predictable because bro I law has always loved her, they hook up, the sex is hot blah blah blah.
What made it enjoyable is the characters (except for the too good brother in law) are funny and keep the story moving . Everyone lives happily ever after and even the dead ex is redeemed. A great read for a Sunday afternoon, but there are no surprises.
I really thought this book is going to be my favorite, after Place Your Betts, the latter won it.
Lucky is a celebrity from the really show, Rock My World. Her husband, Ricky, died and left her with nothing but what she owns in her closet the bastard. After 16 years of marriage that's all she gets and his daughters from other women get everything. Lucky is a pissed is an understatemt. Frankly I wouldn't blame her. Will, Rick's brother, has always been in love with her but she picked his brother. Now after Rick's death, he tried to be there for Lucky but she's not letting him because he knew about his brother's affair and did not tell her. Will's objective is to make a family with the three girls Rick and their mothers left behind along with Lucky.
I feel this romance could have been better with the lying and grief but the first book was better written than this at least in those parts. I can't stomach the thought Lucky just accepted Will's excuse why he lied to her about the affair. I wish she gave him more hell for it than what happened. Personally, I don't like lying AND liars.
Overall, it was ok story. Graykowski knows how to write chemistry and people in love so brilliantly. I'll definitely try her other books.
Not what I expected. For some reason I imagined Lucky different from what I read about her in the first book of The Marilyns series, she was kind of a disappointment. So basically she marries a rock star, does everything to make him happy, but during all of their marriage he had a family on the side and decided to introduce that family to her during their reality show, live. After she rans away he goes after her and ends up crashing his car and dying. A year and a half later she is broke, and her husband's brother offers her a new reality show so they can get some money, the catch? The woman her husband cheated on her with is dead, and the three girls her husband had with her are now living with the brother, who has loved Lucky since they met, and he is determined to win her love and form a family with her and the girls... There are a lot of things going on. I get how the girls weren't guilty of anything and deserved to be loved, but I think that Lucky accepted them too easily. I didn't like Will. He seems sweet and he does a lot for her, but it feels a little too late. I just don't understand how you could claim to love someone like that and let her be fooled for 15 years. And she forgives him too easily and falls for him too fast.
Is a good reading if you don't have anything else to read, but not one of the author's best.
Lucky is left with a slew of disappointment and shame after her husband revealed on nation TV that he had another family. And to make things worse he died before she could really react to the news. Leaving her with a broken heart, a huge debt, broke, and homeless. The only way to pay back the debt is to star in another reality show with her husband's secret family. A deal she is never going to make. Until her brother in law rips the carpet from under her even more.
Will spends his whole life hiding his biggest secret. But when he no longer needs to keep the secret and has other people to take care of Will is intent on getting Lucky to face the aftermath of the mess his brother left behind.
As Will and Lucky come to terms with the arrangement that needs to be done they come to finally open their eyes. A love that is hidden throughout their life is brought to light and finally Lucky has the chance to get her Happily Ever After.
Getting Lucky was a good book. Lucky and Will are very stubborn and cute together. What I wish was to have more of a connection to their characters and that things didn't feel rush. I wish more time was spent on the storyline and their romance.
So conflicted about this book. I love this author. This is the third book of hers I have read.
I love her humor. I love her strong female relationships. I love her humanity (overstating, I know). I just love her.
But this book, meh. I like all of the individual units listed above, but I didn't really see a story here. It seemed more like a recounting of individual events and everything was tied up in the end.
It was a sweet recounting, it was a well-done recounting; but a story, I am not so sure. I know that probably doesn't make sense to anyone but me.
The situations were over the top. There just seemed to be one ridiculous situation after another, and they were all drawn as if they made perfect sense.
Did I love the book? No. Did I laugh a lot? For sure. Did I enjoy seeing the Marilyns (and the Marilyn Mama)? Definitely.
Did I feel like I read a cohesive tale that had conflict and resolution? Not so much.
But I will read whatever this woman writes because I love her so, even if I don't get a sense of "story." The vignettes were just fine.
A few editing/spelling/word choice issues, but they didn't take you out of the book.
