Helen Docherty
32 books43 followersHelen Docherty is an internationally published author of many rhyming picture books, including the highly acclaimed Someone Just Like You, illustrated by David Roberts. Helen's books have been translated into 27 languages and staged as plays and musicals for children, in the UK, Germany and Canada. She often collaborates with her husband, the illustrator and author Thomas Docherty, and together they have produced many award-winning picture books, including The Snatchabook, The Storybook Knight ( The Knight Who Wouldn't Fight), Superwolf, Pirate Nell's Tale to Tell, The Screen Thief and Blue Baboon Finds Her Tune. She has also collaborated with many other illustrators, most recently Daniela Sosa, Steven Lenton and Brizida Magro. Helen worked for many years as a language teacher in Mexico City and the UK before becoming an author. She also has an MA in Film and Television Production (Bristol University), which helped to develop her skills in crafting narrative. Luna is een kleine wolf die ervan droomt om een superheld te worden. Haar broer zegt echter dat dat plan geen kans van slagen heeft, omdat iedereen bang is voor wolven en hard zal wegrennen voor haar. Maar Luna laat zich niet uit het lood slaan en begint superhard te trainen.
Als ze echter andere dieren begint te redden, blijkt eerst dat haar grote broer gelijk had: iedereen is bang voor haar en ze lopen weg nadat ze hen gered heeft. Maar nadat ze op spectaculaire wijze een konijnenfamilie kan helpen van de verdrinkingsdood, juicht iedereen haar toe en wordt ze aanvaard als de grote superheld die ze altijd wou zijn.
De moraal van het verhaal is heel duidelijk: als je doorzet kun je alles worden wat je maar wilt, ondanks de vooroordelen die sommige mensen over je hebben.
Op dat vlak leek de inhoud me soms iets te makkelijk en zeemzoetig, op het einde komt alles wel snel goed. Maar dat werd grotendeels goedgemaakt door de prachtige tekeningen in Superwolf. Ze barsten van de kleuren en de details en zijn vaak ook heel grappig, een plezier om naar te kijken. En ik kan me voorstellen dat ze ook uitnodigen tot interactie bij het voorlezen, je kunt de kinderen vragen wat er allemaal op te zien is, welke emoties je ziet op de gezichten van de dieren en hoe ze denken dat het gaat verlopen.
Helen Docherty groeide op in het zuiden van Engeland en woont nu in Wales met haar gezin. Reeds als kind droomde ze ervan om schrijfster te worden, ze verslond boeken en maakte al haar eerste verhalen. Toch zou ze niet meteen auteur worden, ze woonde eerst nog in Frankrijk, Spanje, Cuba en Mexico en ging daarna lesgeven op secundaire scholen. Pas nadat ze haar man, Thomas Docherty, ontmoette, die zijn eigen boeken illustreerde, begon ze weer verhalen te schrijven.
Haar echtgenoot, Thomas Docherty, illustreerde ook dit prentenboek, Superwolf. Hij omschrijft zichzelf als iemand die uitgroeide van een dyslectische kribbelaar tot een prijswinnende auteur en illustrator. Dit dankt hij ook aan zijn ouders die hem verhalen voorlazen en hem meenamen naar de bibliotheek waar hij uren in prentenboeken en strips keek.
Superwolf is het resultaat van de creativiteit van dit koppel en een aangenaam voorleesboek.

This is gorgeous. Helen and Thomas Docherty have made a brilliant job of telling and illustrating Luna's story. I love it, not sure if this is going to school! Might be keeping it!
