I go back and forth on "reviewing" this as it's MY book. But I do want it to show up in my reading totals for the year as I spent a lot of time reading it and editing it this year, so I'm posting a "review" so it adds to my totals. But also, yes, I LOVE this book. This series has been 17 years in the making, beginning as a wisp of an idea long ago and ending in a dream-come-true to publish it. I'm super excited to get to post it here finally.

I absolutely loved this book! The beginning started out a little gory but other than that it was incredible! I loved the characters and the stakes were high. It also ended on a cliffhanger, thanks a lot.... 😂

I can't wait to read the rest of the books (when I get around to spending the money 🤭)

I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes high action fantasy! It was very fast paced from what I remember (I made the mistake of not writing a review instantly after reading it) but it wasn't fast paced in an annoying way (I don't generally prefer fast paced).

There wasn't any bad content (besides the gore in the beginning and that's just personal preference since I have a weak stomach) and the christian themes were very strong!

Thank you to the author for writing good clean Christian fantasy, we need more of this out there!

I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this, since it's out of my typical genre, but I'm so glad I did. And I plan to read the rest of the series too!

It is urban fantasy, set in a modern world. The book begins when a chemical plant explodes, wreaking chaos and soaking high school students in chemicals. The students soon realize that the exposure seems to have given them super abilities, but these powers start to feel like more of a curse than a blessing as they struggle to gain control of them without hurting others. They also wonder if it was purposeful and if they are being used in a massive experiment. (After all, why else are cameras being installed all over the city?) To make matters worse, someone who has the power to cast darkness and hide himself in shadow is a serial killer, targeting students at their own school!

The personalities of the characters were very well-developed, and while they go through typical teenage experiences like dating, friendships, and school grades, these young people suddenly have so much more on their plates to cope with. I loved watching how they interact and learning some of their back stories.

What you'll find: Lots of action, heartbreak, mystery, faith, gritty scenes, and a cliffhanger that will have you grabbing Book Two asap!

(There are scenes of death, gore, and darkness, which is not glorified, but might still affect anyone with sensitivities to that stuff.)

4.5 Stars, rounded up!
Let me start out by saying this is very much outside my normal genre of reading. I would describe it as contemporary fantasy, but at times it read almost like a thriller. If you enjoy that type of story and aren't sensitive to violence and intense situations, this could be a great fit for you!

My favorite part of this book was the characters. It's a diverse cast, and the way they each responded to events, internal struggles and others around them made them come to life for me. I found myself invested in each of the main characters, especially Sam and Marcus, who are very different from one another, but each carried the story in such a strong way.

I appreciated the way scripture and prayer was woven in, particularly toward the end. In addition to the characters being diverse, the relationships are as well. I look forward to seeing how they develop!

Despite this being outside my typical genre of enjoyment, I genuinely got caught up in the mystery, the stakes, the way the plot built and unwound. It kept me invested the whole time! This book ends on a cliffhanger, and I know I'll be wondering what happens next until I can start on the second book!

Content discretions: lots of death, blood, and descriptions of gruesome fates of both animals and people. A student feels like she is being stalked/watched. There is a lockdown-type situation at the school.

I really haven't read much in the Fantasy genre, but after reading this one, I realize I should have! I will be reading all books in this trilogy. I loved the fast pace, realistic characters, and the frighteningly intense drama. I could hardly put the book down until I read every last line! When I finished, I had to go immediately to order the next book! Because of the Christian setting and Biblical references, I spotted some interesting allegories as well. This would be a great book for generating family discussions along those lines. 5 Stars!

My mom's books are great.
Perhaps I am biased, but maybe you're missing out on a great book.
