*My Rating ~ 3.5*

The Lies Beneath. by Lucy O’Callaghan published April 2nd with Poolbeg Press and is described as ‘a compelling tale of fractured trust, elusive truths and the indomitable human spirit, unravelling the intricate fabric of relationships and the shadows lurking beneath the surface.’

Carla and Emily are best friends since their school years and have always been there for each other through thick and thin. Following the recent fracture in her marriage, Emily has relied on Carla’s support to see her through. Emily is now gaining strength and taking some brave steps into this new, unexpected, world. With Carla’s unwavering encouragement, Emily starts to date again and begins to see the possibility of a new life for herself beyond the shattered remains of her marriage.

Carla is happily married to Thomas, She is a stay-at-home mother and lives a life of relative comfort. Her time is very much her own when the kids are in school but, although very much aware of the freedom she has, Carla is restless. She had taken time out from teaching, with the intention of treating it as a career break, but Thomas has a different view. Thomas doesn’t want Carla to work. He likes having his home life ordered and sees Carla as central to this. They have money. She has everything she could possibly want, so why would she consider going back to work?

Emily and Carla, unknowingly, envy each other’s life. Emily would love to experience the stress-free life that Carla has, where her only concerns are Parent’s Association meetings and choosing what to cook for dinner. Carla, on the other hand, sees this new life Emily is carving for herself and relishes the independence of being back at work, meeting new people and regaining her confidence.

Amanda is a local librarian who has raised her daughter, Dawn, more or less alone. Dawn’s father, Brad. lives in The States and Amanda’s brother, Michael, lives in Australia. With little close support, it has very much been Amanda and Dawn. They had a very close relationship through the years, but now Dawn wants to spread her wings and gain some independence away from the helicopter parenting of her mother. Dawn is suffocating under her mother’s controlling hand and wants out.

When the paths of Carla, Emily and Amanda cross, secrets begin to unravel and truths are slowly revealed. It soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems behind the locked doors of all three families. Secrets can be dangerous. Secrets can destroy. Secrets can be toxic.

The Lies Beneath is an enjoyable novel that examines the bonds of family and friends. Deception and betrayal, control and jealousy, lust and vengeance, guilt and regret are all themes explored by Lucy O’Callaghan as the story unfolds. Beneath the surface, lies are often buried deep, but sometimes they bubble up to the top and nothing can stop the destruction they unleash. The Lies Beneath is a talented debut from an author at the beginning of her journey. It will be interesting to see what direction Lucy O’Callaghan takes next.

It took me a little bit to get into this book, but once I did it was amazing. The characters were very well developed and the writing was great! Three women love the same man, but he is married to only one of them. Lies, secrets and deceit follow. Fast paced and great ending!

The Lies Beneath: A gripping tale of friendship, love, and the masks we wear...

Paperback – 2 April 2024 by Poolbeg Press

This is so much more than just a story of friendship love and betrayal. First of all, this debut from Lucy O’Callaghan, went straight into the bestselling list its first week out, and it’s a story that will get right into your heart and keep you reading late into the night.

Friendships are really pushed to the limit and the secrets are about as raw as they get, while lives are destroyed in the process.

The perfect combination for a great read!

Carla, Emily and Amanda, are very relatable characters. We all know people like them, either directly or indirectly, even if they don’t show their true personalities all the time.

For instance, Carla just wants to go back to work after the babies are born. She’s passionate about teaching. The hubby Thomas, on the other hand, has a smidgen of male ego going on and insists that he is the provider in the home and there’s no wife of his will ever need to work. Heaven forbid she might want a life of her own…

In fairness Thomas is doing everything that is expected of a good husband and father to finance the family lifestyle, so we will allow him his ego, and, he clearly loves Carla. Or is he manipulating the situation with a hidden agenda? Is he passive aggressively keeping his wife where he wants her for his own ulterior motive?

Emily, who is Carla’s best friend, is exhausted from work and the responsibilities of being a single mom since separating from her husband. She longs to have a partner again and is dipping her toes into the dating world. They have been friends since forever, and the two women lean on each other for support. Carla is concerned for Emily’s safety with the men she is meeting in her pursuit of happiness. Who knows what masks these men are wearing.

Inevitably, Emily’s longing to be in a stable relationship leads her to make a mistake with disastrous consequences. A mistake there is no undoing, shattering lives in its wake.

Amanda, to the world at large, is the most wonderful outgoing friendly librarian. The type you’d just love to encounter when browsing for your next read. As a mother however, she has serious issues with letting her daughter Dawn leave home. Amanda’s Jekyll and Hyde personality is brilliantly interwoven throughout the story by O’Callaghan.

A superbly written narrative of the trials and tribulations of life and the lies and betrayals that destroy families. A page turner with a dollop of dark-and-twisty that renders it more than just a family tale, which I loved.

A five-star debut.

Lucy may be new to the writing scene, but she is definitely one to watch.
I look forward to the next one.

Fans of K.L. Slater and B.A. Paris Slater will love this.

I absolutely loved this debut by Lucy O’Callaghan. I never know what to expect from an authors debut but once I read the blurb for this one I just knew I had to read it. To say I was gripped from the start is an understatement, after the first few chapters I was completely hooked and couldn’t put this book down. A great story with well developed characters. It’s packed full of lies and deception just my kind of read.

In The lies beneath we're following the lives of 4 women.
Carla has it all; a gorgeous loving husband, two great kids and a rich life. The only thing she would like is getting back to the 'old Carla', getting back to teaching, but Thomas her husband wants her to stay at home.
Her best friend Emily is struggling to get her life together since she's divorced. She works, takes care of her two kids and tries to find a new love in her life. But then she makes the biggest mistake of her life.
Amanda, a friendly librarian, is a manipulative mother behind the scenes. She has her own struggles since her parents died and tries to keep her daughter Dawn from leaving the house to study abroad. But Dawn is tired of her manipulative mother, tired of the nasty comments and down-talking and is desperate to leave her suffocating situation.
Direct from the beginning there's a tension that gets under your skin. The plot is greatly built and when you think you know it all, there's a twist that turns the tale around.
Little by little you get to know the characters, their past and why each of them does what they do. Their feelings, struggles and emotions are very palpable. You sympathize with Carla and Dawn, the injustice done to them hits deep inside you. With Emily and Amanda you really feel the urge to shake them, to scream at them to stop their destructive actions.
The progression of the story up to the moment the link is made between the 4 women is really well developed.
This lies beneath is marked as 'A gripping tale of friendship, love, and the masks we wear…' and not a word of that is a lie. It's a great story from start to finish that keeps you glued to the book.

In the book the lies beneath by Lucy O’Callahan is set in Galway Ireland and focuses on three women Carly her best friend Emily and Amanda they all have one thing in common when it comes to Amanda her secret could ruin a relationship when it comes to Emily her secret could ruin everything. With characters that are multilayered in a plot that keeps you glued to the pages miss O’Callahan has written a great women’s fiction story that is one of the best I have read in a while. It is a good author that can make you like the villains of the story and or feel sympathy for them and that is what she’s done with this book. They say lies or a mask to hide the real us and then this book there’s plenty of people in hiding not only is there Amanda the controlling mother Emily the backstabbing best friend and poor Carly the innocent unknowing wife oh yes I have yet to mention Carly‘s husband Tom, he is a handsome charismatic man who seems to be thoughtful and respectful and although he doesn’t want Carly working he would buy or give her anything except the one thing she already thought she had. Even he has secrets but his are life-changing end devastating. Last but not least is Amanda‘s daughter Dawn hers was a really good story and she is the only female in the book not directly connected to the biggest secret in the book but still had a great story that I enjoyed. Each story reveals secrets that will keep you intrigued,There is so much I want to put in this review but don’t want to ruin the story for anyone although it is a very long book over 80 chapters but if you love a great story that you will not want to put down you definitely need to give this a read. It is a book I definitely recommend although it isn’t a thriller it comes really close it was a book about friendship those we trust in those we shouldn’t what we owe our families and how much loyalty does one person owe another? I want to thank Book Sirens for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

The Lies Beneath by Lucy O'Callaghan is a mad and toxic domestic thriller full of manipulation and betrayal. There is emotional abuse, toxic relationships and friendships that will make your blood boil. Secrets, oh my so many secrets!
I loved it! AAAAAA - I LOVED IT!
I was immediately captivated by the storyline! Avoid starting before bedtime as it's difficult to stop reading!

3 different families:

Perfect family: Carla and Thomas
Carla and Thomas have a lot to be thankful for. They have a long-lasting marriage, a successful business, a spacious house, and two healthy boys.

Recently divorced family: Emily and kids
Emily recently went through a divorce after discovering that her husband is gay. This was a shock and devastating for her, but she is now ready to start dating again. She and her ex-husband are co-parenting their two children very amicably.

Single mom for many years: Amanda and Dawn
Amanda is a single mom who has been raising her 19-year-old daughter, Dawn, on her own for many years. Amanda works as a local librarian, and her husband moved back to the States after their divorce. Unfortunately, Amanda exhibits toxic and controlling behaviour in various aspects of her life.

Carla and Emily have been best friends since their school and college years and have always supported each other.

Amanda... How does Amanda fit into this story?
So far, the only link is that they live in the same town, but is that the only connection?
Is it possible to destroy long-lasting friendships with one decision?
Can you trust the closest person in your life - your mother?

Friendship tested, secrets revealed, lives shattered...

Oh wow! This is a gripping, captivating and intricately woven story that will culminate entirely unexpectedly!

To be honest, I can't believe that this is the author's first novel! It's really good! A six-star rating from me!

Thank you BookSirens and Poolbeg Press for this copy!

This book follows two threads of the lives of what seems like two sets of characters but they soon intertwine. I really enjoyed this story - usually I'm not interested with any kind of infidelity angle but it's an angle surrounded by so many layers and it had me gripped. Amanda was a character I instantly disliked and I really rooted for Dawn, but the fascinating thing about Amanda, is that while her general behaviour is appalling, we get an insight into what made her become like that. Her own fears of losing the people she loves due to her past actions in such a traumatic way. Despite that fear she is cruel and cold and I found it interesting to see her past and understand how her trauma shaped her psychology- I didn't forgive her actions though, especially her cruelty to Dawn.

Emily! Oh my goodness, with friends like Emily! What a self obsessed person! I shook my head so many times at her actions, total obsesison with what she can gain at the expense of people who would get obviously very hurt.

Now Carla I feel for, she deserved none of this and I want nothing but happiness for her!

We have an interesting parallel with Dawn and Carla, both have these women in their lives, obsessed with the same thing, who hurt them, Amanda more overtly but Dawn in a callous way.

This was a good read, intriguing and couldn't put it down!

Thank you to Booksirens and the publisher for my advance copy. My review is my honest opinion.

Carla, married, two kids, big house, stay at home Mum.

Emily, Carla’s best friend, divorced two kids, works.

Amanda, mother to Dawn who’s at University and wants to leave home, but Amanda is a smothering, clingy mother.

What do they all have in common???

I was a bit confused at first about how they were all connected but then it all became clear! I didn’t really take to any of the women, Carla wants to go back to work but her husband won’t let her, Emily is quite envious of Carla’s lifestyle and not happy being single. Amanda is a horribly controlling mother. Dawn is the only one I quite liked.

I did however get drawn into the storyline and found myself reading more than I usually do, to find out how it was going to end. However, when I did get to the end I was quite disappointed. The ending felt like a bit of an anti-climax to be honest, can’t say much more without spoilers but what I thought was going to happen at the end didn’t really happen and the character who caused all the problems didn’t get the comeuppance I felt they deserved.

Having said all that, I enjoyed the style of writing and it was a good storyline that kept me page turning. I would read more from this author.

6 degrees of separation is a good description of this book. 3 families are all connected in some form. There is a “perfect” family that has money, the big house, a great family, but stay at home Carla wants more. She wants to go back to teaching, but her controlling husband wants her home. Emily is a recently divorced mom of 2, struggling to get back into dating, but enjoying her freedom. Carla and Emily look with envy at what the other has. Dawn is a college student struggling to move away from her overcontrolling Mom. Amanda is a wonderful librarian, but at home is ruthless to her daughter, trying desperately to keep her home.
The author does a great job of intertwining their lives in unexpected ways. She also shows how, when you put your self in front of others, without thinking things through, that the results are not what you would expect.
A good read, but has very long inner discussions which start to ramble and repeat. The ending was confusing and not necessary. Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.

The Lies Beneath is a solid suspense novel (NOT a thriller) set in Ireland with lots of dark secrets and twists that make it edgy. I didn't want to put it down once I really got into the book. The problem was at the beginning. Perhaps it was because I was reading an ARC, but each of the chapters are merely numbered rather than titled with some clue as to who that chapter is about. This is important because there are multiple points of view and, in the beginning, a few back and forth timelines. That type of confusion is very distracting from the story. Other than that, I hated the appropriate characters, like the correct ones and found the story line intriguing. I'll look for more by this author.

This book is Lucy’s debut and oh my goodness, what an entrance!! This gripping story of love, friendship and deceit really does hook you from the very start. There is great character development as the story unfolds and the plot was well thought out, seamlessly combining the lives of multiple characters. The only thing stopping it from being a 5⭐️ was that I felt it was a little repetitive and drawn out in the middle but it quickly picked up pace again at the end to deliver the perfect finale.

I loved this psychological thriller! It kept me guessing and who was the “good guy” and who was the “bad guy.” It was told from multiple perspectives and started right off the bat with a murder/accident?? I could connect with the wife and mother who wanted to go back to teaching because she loved it, but her husband wanted to take care of her and let her stay home. So good!

Wow

So so good! It took a bit of setting the story up for me to get completely involved and then I couldn't put it down! I rooted for some characters and really wanted others to get what they deserve. Either way you felt something for all the characters. A really nice emotional read. I loved it so much I just downloaded the other book available by the author and am going to read it now. Highly recommend!

It took me a little bit of time to get into this book as I had some trouble keeping track of the characters and the relationships at first, but once I did, I couldn't stop reading! The characters are compelling and very well developed. As a reader, I felt like I grew to know all of the characters well. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed this book. The friendship, the relationships between the women, and the relationship between Dawn and Amanda rang pretty true well except for one part at least......I identified with Dawn for the most part, won't spoil it but I wouldn't have made one choice that she did.
