"A Cup of Silver Linings" by Karen Hawkins is the second book in the 'Dove Pond' series.
Ava Dove is the owner of 'Ava's Landscaping' and she knows her plants. She also uses her plants to make specialty teas for folks who need 'special' help with such things as romance, sleeping, and happiness. Her new tearoom, 'Specialty Gourmet Teas' is due to open soon and that's when disaster strikes!
Ava's clients are experiencing crazy side-effects from her special blends. Can she get to the root of her tea blend debacle? Or, will she need to postpone the opening of her tearoom until further notice?
Kristen Foster, an employee at Ava's tearoom, is grieving the loss of her unique mother, Julie. Her grandmother, Ellen, has arrived in Dove Pond, in a whirlwind, to prepare her deceased daughter's house for sale. Then she plans to whisk Kristen off to live with her in Raleigh, no ifs, ands, or buts!
Kristen doesn't care for her grandmother, who she really doesn't know, and has devised a plan that just might keep her in Dove Pond forever. She's relying on her closest friends to help make this dream come true for her!
This is my second trip to Dove Pond. Once again, I love the diverse and quirky characters but you need to know going in, there are lots of them.
Besides the two main story lines, there are secondary ones that tangle up the flow a bit. It can become distracting, here and there, with everything that's going on. Believe me when I say, there's no shortage of 'balls in the air' within book 2!
I listened to the audiobook and narrator's Tavia Gilbert and Amanda Ronconi, who were both in book 1, were the standouts of the four narrators in this one. Their voice inflections and voicing added texture and life to the telling of this second story.
I did like this story but not as much as the first book, The Book Charmer. I do recommend it for the great topics this author focuses on in her stories. This one has topics of: loss and grieving of a loved one, discovering and embracing new family, empathy and understanding, forgiveness and coping with change, friendship and a shared sense of community.
I am an outlier with this book, so please check out other reviews before you cross this one off your list! 3.5 stars.

A Cup of Silver Linings by Karen Hawkins is a 2021 Gallery Books publication.
When sixteen-year-old Kristen’s mother passes away, her estranged grandmother, Ellen, arrives to take charge. The two clash immediately as Ellen insists, they need to sell the house, and that Kristen needs to move in with her.
Kristen refuses to entertain that idea at all, setting up a battle of wills between the two. But then Kristen gets a fabulous idea- find the one person who can overrule Ellen… her father!
Meanwhile, Ava Dove, on the cusp of opening her teashop, at long last, ,discovers her special tea’s healing remedies have gone wonky, backfiring in horrifying ways.
When her sister, Sarah, discovers the exact book Ava needs, it becomes clear that Kristen is the key to reversing the terrible effects of her teas.
This will require locating Kristen’s father and Ellen will have to cooperate!
I love the whimsical quality to this series and Hawkins’ ability to address emotional issues without breaking that fantastical atmosphere.
It seems to me, that of all the characters featured in the book, the older ones achieved the greatest growth, which only goes to show, it is never too late to learn or change. Although we all make mistakes in life that can have long-reaching reverberations, and must live with regret, forgiveness is a powerful thing, even if it does take some time to fully materialize. I loved how the author kept it real that way, and allowed the characters to admit their foibles and humanity, without erasing the damage done in the wink of an eye. We are always a work in progress, after all.
Overall, this highly anticipated second installment in the Dove Pond series, is a very solid, delightful addition to the series. I enjoyed the story very much and am hoping a third installment is in the works!!

Unfortunately, I didn’t like this as well as the first book in the series. I love stories of magical realism, but this one fell a bit flat for me in some parts.
It's the story of another Dove sister, Ava, who is opening a tea room in Dove Pond featuring her teas that help people in the perfect ways that they need help. When some of the teas act in peculiar ways, Ava is afraid a long held secret she is hiding is trying to break free. It's also the story of Ellen, whose estranged daughter Julie dies and Ellen comes back to Dove Pond from Raleigh to wrap up her daughter's affairs and take custody of her teenaged daughter Kristen. Kristen wants no part of leaving Dove Pond for the big city and she and her friends decide that the best course of action would be to figure out the identity of Kristen's father so she can stay with him.
Overall, I thought there were too many storylines going on and none of them were given the full attention that they really needed to make a fully fleshed out, meaningful tale. As it is I didn't really feel the connection to the characters or their dilemmas, I thought that Ava was being really childish and there wasn't a really good romance story like in the first book. Yet for its shortcomings, this is still a lovely, charming read and I do look forward to other books in the series.

With having read the first in the Dove Pond series... I fell in love with Karen Hawkins writing.
A Cup of Silver Linings is nothing short of Hawkins talent again. I loved this sweet tale and loved the touch of magic in this again. This was the perfect light escape read that I needed.
This story is about the Dove sister Ava who has a heart and magic touch for plants. She is planning on opening a tea room. She uses her plants to make special teas for everyone in the town. Unfortunately, something goes wrong with one of her plants and she can't make her teas.
This story was about growth with Ava, Kristen, and Ellen. Kristen is trying to move forward from the death of her mother Julie who died from cancer and her grandmother Ellen has come to Dove Pond to take Kristen away from the town.
This was such an sweet and inspiring read to the series. I am looking forward to the next in the series. I would say it's ok to read this as a standalone but it's always good to get background from the first book :).

Meanwhile, back in Dove Pond the books are still talking to Sarah Pond and sister Ava is about to open the Pink Magnolia featuring her teas, hot chocolate (I really want some even though we just went through a summer heatwave here.), baked goods and yummy quiche. Wait. What is that bumping noise coming from underneath Ava's bed? Why do some of her magical tea mixtures seem to have a mind of their own? Find out how Dove Pond weathers these storms while circling the wagons around young Kristen Foster as she mourns the loss of her mother and has to get to know her estranged grandmother. Will including the unknown father in the picture help Kristen stay in Dove Pond? If you are like me, you will love returning to Dove Pond. I am so glad there are five more Dove sisters to keep this series going.

What a wonderful addition to the "Dove Pond" series. I don't have anything to say except that I hope we get a book starring each of the Dove sisters. This book focuses on Ava, the brewer of teas and savant of plants we met in the first book and novella. I really miss magical realism books being in my usual reading rotation, and this was a great read that helped slake my thirst. I cannot wait until book #3 comes out. Hawkins reminds me a lot of Sarah Addison Allen, but in a different way I think that really lets you get a sense of her own writing.
"A Cup of Silver Linings" follows Ava Dove. Ava is in the midst of trying to get her new tearoom together to open it soon in Dove Pond. The book starts off with a death though. We follow a woman named Ellen Foster who is in Dove Pond burying her estranged daughter, Julie. Ellen wants to get out of Dove Pond and its eccentric citizens, but her granddaughter Kristen wants to stay in Dove Pond. Kristen has ties to Ava since she works for her and using some tea manages to introduce something magical to Ellen's life. Ava is also desperate to keep a secret from her sister, Sarah.
I will say the same thing I said in the last book, I really want more of the Dove sisters in this series. They are included, but at times there's so much other stuff going on you don't know what to do with it. I saw other reviewers saying the book felt disjointed at times, and it did a bit, but not enough to bother my reading. I will say though that I wish that Hawkins had kept the book to Ava and Ellen. I think throwing in Kristen's POV was too much. Especially since Ava's big secret was a big thing and it had repercussions for her and someone close to her.
I love the town of Dove Pond. It seems like a magical place and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Deep story of family, loss, and misunderstandings while working on reconnecting.

The author definitely plays on our emotions in this story which builds on loss and ultimately, fear. Loss of a child, potential loss of a grandchild, fear of change, fear of failure, and secrets that could destroy a family. That is a ton of emotion packed into this book.
With clarity and deep dives into the human psyche, Hawkins develops a tight knit family and town where everyone knows everyone, yet accepts them as they are - faults and all. That is something different from what Ellen is used to as she comes to town to attend her daughters funeral and take charge of her granddaughter and the home affairs. Finding a delicate common thread is tough but without realizing it, Ava is that thread.
One thing about reading a new series is learning all of the people. Fair warning, there are a lot of people in this book but not difficult to absorb them and follow along. I did feel like some parts were a bit sectioned apart. Ava and her story; Kristen and her story. Both critical to the plot but for some reason they didn't seem relevant to each other until almost the end when brought everyone was brought together. It seemed a bit too disjointed for some reason.
Overall, I loved this book with its delightful wander into a bit of mystical imagination and levity that balances out the heavy loss of a friend, daughter, and mother. Dove Pond is a fun series to get lost in!

This was saccharin sweet. Hell, the word "heck" was actually used in a sentence. If I told you I didn't know what I was in for, I'd be lying to you. I knew exactly what I was in for since this is the second in the series. In a perfect world, I'd live in Dove Pond and live happily ever after. Since that's out of the realm of possibility, I'll just read about this delightful little town and its people and dream of a perfect world. Bring on the third!

This is another cute, sweet book in the Dove Pond series. In this story, Ava Dove, 6th of 7 Dove daughters and owner of a landscaping and gourmet tea business is suffering trouble with three teas she made for her regular customers, just before the grand opening of her new tea shop. Frantic to solve the problem, and with growing blows to her reputation and canceled orders, Ava isolates herself and scrambles to fix the problem.
Kristen, a young teenager who recently lost her mom and who works part-time for Ava, jumps in to help. She'll do anything to avoid Ellen, the cold-as-ice grandmother she barely knows who is determined to move her away from Dove Pond. The demanding and judgmental Ellen is trying to connect to Kristen, but can't get out of her own way and pushes her further and further away.
Just as Ava solves the mystery of the tea and Ellen and Kristen make a breakthrough, a dark long-hidden secret of Ava's is exposed and not only her business reputation, but her family ties, are threatened. But, of course, this is a feel good, heartwarming book series of growth and forgiveness, so of course it all works out in the end. Even knowing everything will turn out for the best, it's still a nice read to see how the author gets there.

September 1, 2021Dove Pond is a delightful place to visit and one you'll want to stay in for a while. With a hint of magic and a cast of characters you'll want to know better, the 2nd book in the series is a wonderful addition. This time we get to know Ava, her green thumb, her amazing teas, and a terrible secret that threatens all she loves. This series will also appeal to fans of Sarah Addison Allen. - Jennifer K.

Can I just go live in Dove Pond? When is another book in the series coming out? You know how it is, when you finish a book but your head is still in it. Anyway, this is the second of the Dove Pond series., and while books focus on some of the Dove sisters, you get the stories of those whose lives are affected by them. Each Dove sister has a special ability or talent. Sarah talks to books and is able to give you the exact book you need or want which is a seriously good talent for a librarian. Using her gift for talking to plants by landscaping and by making teas that help her customers, Ava is now launching a tea room. The story opens with the death of Julie and her estranged mother coming to Dove Pond to meet her teenage granddaughter. Skipping from one character's point of view every chapter should have been confusing, but it totally engaging. If you are needing a spot of magical realism to brighten your days in these harsh times, this is the book for y.ou

The Dove Pond NC series by Karen Hawkins needs to be made into a TV series! It reminds me a bit of the Good Witch series (which I love) but with an expanded universe of seven different sisters with seven different powers. Magical realism at its finest.
A Cup Full of Silver Linings focuses on the sixth sister, Ava, and a grandmother and grand-daughter, although we do continue to get to know more about the Dove Pond residents from book one. There are some pretty heavy issues dealt with in this book including a secret that has been trying to get loose for many years, death, family, and affairs of the heart. Hawkins is able to explore these issues in a sweet but realistic way… along with a touch of magic.
I would love to live in Dove Pond and be able to benefit from Ava’s teas and her sister’s knowledge of books. Books and tea are two of my favorite things, so of course, this series has endured itself to me. But I’m also looking forward to the next book since one of the sisters will be coming home, opening a store next to Ava, and using her weather (or air) powers in some spectacular ways.

How I read this: Free ebook copy received through Edelweiss
When I read the blurb, I thought this book was MEANT for me. But in the end, I have very mixed feelings about it. About 20% in, I could barely make myself keep reading it, and only really got into it around 40-50% in. That's quite a lot of effort for getting into a book.
I feel like I missed out by not reading the first book, The Book Charmer, because while this seems to technically be a standalone, you're still missing some of the setup for the story (when I requested it, I wasn't aware that it's part of a series.)
What I had the most trouble with, though, was the amount of characters. The book does feel stand-alone in the sense that people who were mentioned in the first book are still described well enough and in detail, and you get given all the information. But then again... There are just SO MANY PEOPLE. New super minor characters keep getting introduced in every other page it seems, to the point where it just became too many for me to keep track of at one point. The idea of building a whole fictional town you can keep writing stories about is brilliant... But it was just a little too much.
For example... "This and this person moved in, met someone, promptly moved out, so Ava now has space. She is thinking of calling a third person now cause maybe he'll want the rental, but he's been commuting to another town which hardly even matters because we'll never ever talk about him and his significant other ever again, but in this paragraph their gay relative and autistic son will be mentioned anyway. So Ava makes a mental note to ask him and moves on to completely unrelated things and never thinks about this ever again." And I'm left wondering, WHY did I need to know all this..? What did this completely unrelated infodumping have to do with the story? Okay, maybe that was laid on a bit thick on my part, but that's what it felt like reading it, and it's not even far from the paragraph that inspired me to write this bit :D
Anyway, it did feel a lot like a Hallmark movie. Small cute town, adorable plots, a million of characters, and nobody has actual work to do so they can be in each other's business starting from the very morning. And actually, I think it would have worked great, if it WAS a movie or mini series. It's much easier to deal with a million of new names when you've got a face and a voice to attach them to.
In the end, the story did work, but... I'm sad, because the premise was just SO perfect, the idea of the town and the bunch of characters very promising... And yet. Such dry detail. Such a crowded story. Such simplistic solutions and characters suddenly snapping 180 degrees in the other direction because that fits the narrative of the story.
The blurb likens A Cup of Silver Linings to Alice Hoffman and Sarah Addison-Allen (at least the one I've read does). Sure, the vibe and aim is the same - but it doesn't scratch the depth of these authors' writing. Their stories always have something deep, dark and profound, magical in them. This story was TRYING to be those things, but I wouldn't really say it succeeded. It's a shame, cause the plot could have been perfect for it.
And yet, I won't discount it completely. I kind of want to read the first book now, because while the story was kind of flat, it's nice to get attached to the characters, and I would like to read more about them.

A Cup of Silver Linings by Karen Hawkins is the 2nd book in the Dove Pond Series. A lot of the plotlines from the first book, The Book Charmer, weren’t solved so I was eager to see what happened to these quirky characters.
The first book introduced Sarah, the Dove sister who can talk to books. She can always give a person the perfect book that they need at that moment. In this book, we are introduced to Ava, the Dove sister whose teas are famous for their help in healing. However, something goes wrong. Customers start reporting awful things that have happened to them after drinking the tea. Between the bad batch of tea and the dreadful secret Ava hides, she is also worried about 16-year-old Kristen. Kristen has lived in Dove Pond all of her life with her mom…who just passed away due to cancer. Now her grandmother has come to town determined to take her from Dove Pond. All these characters’ storylines collide in a story filled with friendship and forgiveness.
The word to describe this book is quirky. Everyone is unique and fully embraces it. I am so glad that a few of the plotlines from the previous book were finally resolved–that was actually my main issue in book one. These books aren’t really fantasy, despite how my description sounds, it is actually more magical realism than fantasy.
But this book touches on so many themes that we can all relate to, one of which is grief. I really appreciate how the author shows grief in a non-linear way. Most people think that the stages of grief go in a straight line from denial to acceptance. In reality, it jumps, curves, reverses, and zigzags around. The author also shows two different types of grieving: a devoted relationship and an estranged relationship. She gives all of these feelings and emotions validity.
Needless to say, I cannot wait for book three! We get to meet a new Dove sister! I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars!

Seriously, this series has the most amazing covers. Once again, that’s what drew me in even before I knew it was the next book in the Dove Pond series.
Just as in the first book of this series, The Book Charmer, the first half of this book moved quite slow. Actually, it moved even slower that the first book. I actually felt there were too many perspectives. I understand how the lives and stories of Ava and Kristen overlap, but it just felt like too much to me. There was so much going on. Kirsten grieving her mom and worried she would have to move with her grandmother, Ellen (the grandmother) trying to bond with Kristen and regretting the relationship she didn’t have with her now deceased daughter, Ava trying to get her tea room ready for opening while hiding a huge secret from even her sisters while also trying to be a comforting present in Kristen’s life, Ava also losing business when she has a bad batch of teas.
While I loved Sarah in the first book, we were only given random scenes with her here that didn’t show her charm to the extent that I would have liked. With the minimal amount given, I don’t understand why any of the chapters were written from Sarah’s perspective. Again, it was too much.
When I was reading Kristen’s storyline, I wanted things to stay on her storyline. While I was reading Ava’s, I wanted it to stay on Ava. That is to say, I enjoyed both of their stories. It was the jumping back and forth that got to me. (I should note, this is not something that generally bothers me in a story.) And as the story jumped characters, it also jumped time. With the weeks flying by, it made no sense that Kristen’s story hadn’t progressed more.
Here are a bunch of positive things. Most of the characters are wonderful. I still enjoyed the quirky and magical nature of the Dove family. The town as a whole is downright charming. The concepts are original and interesting. All of that kept me coming back. It was the loosey-goosey nature of the flow of the story that had me only reading a chapter at a time.
I feel invested enough in the Dove sisters to want to know what happens next, but I’m hoping the next story is a bit more cohesive.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. I knew from the first page that I was really going to like this book...Normally if a book starts with a funeral, you would think it would automatically be a sad book...but this wasn't like any funeral I have ever attended...and the people in this town were not like anybody I have ever met...although I would actually love to meet the Dove sisters. I would love a tea that could fix whatever my problems were right up to communicating with the dead. I loved every character in this book which is very unusual for me. When I requested this title I had no idea it was part of a series but you can bet I will be going back to read the first one. I love love loved this one.

A Cup of Silver Linings was not my cup of tea. Although I enjoyed the "magic" and supernatural abilities of some of the characters in the first book in this series (The Book Charmer), I felt that the use of magic and the supernatural was way over the top in this second book. It went from fun and somewhat believable to eye-rolling and head-shaking in this novel. There were some interpersonal relationship issues that would have been much more satisfyingly resolved had it been done in real life rather than through unbelievable supernatural means. And so much of it was just too melodramatic for my taste.
I also did not care that the story was written from several different characters' points of view. The author would switch to the next character just when something of importance was going to happen. I found that frustrating.
The narrators for each character in this audiobook version were mediocre, at best.
Clean Readers: other than a few mild expletives, I believe this book is clean.

Its a book about the many ways both love and grief affects our lives. This story has charming characters, secrets, sweet dogs, tasty teas, and multiple stories within the storyline. In this book you get more and more of Dove sisters which is a thing l think the first book lacked , since Sarah was basically a side character and Grace the main one . However this wasnt an issue for me with this book , cause we knew alot about both of the dove sisters and kriaten's story was far more intersting for me than Grace's .
I especially loved the ending, it was incredibly satisfying and wrapped everything up in a nice little bow .. such a beautiful, magical book .. so curl up and make yourself a cup of lavander tea and dive right into the whimiscal town of Dove Pond.

A Cup of Silver Linings by Karen Hawkins was a sweet and lovely story about friends, family and secrets.
