Shallow Comics buddy read this week is RED. Because we're lazy, and it's fairly easy to find a superhero whose got some sort of red on 'em...somewhere.

description

If you like all that woo-woo-spiritual-fucknut-ninja shit, then maybe this will be a dream come true for you.
Personally, I thought this was another crap story along the lines of (but not nearly as horrible as) Elektra: Assassin. If you liked Frank Miller's take on this character, then you'll enjoy Bloodlines.
Otherwise, stay away.
Elektra as a narrator is just...Pbbbt
She's looking back on what 'might have been', lamenting her lost mother, lost father, lost boyfriend, and lost life.
All while taking on a job to find the world's most wily mercenary.
It's supposed to give a glimpse inside to what motivates her...I think.
So.
Say hello to the World's Most Depressing Assassin!
I get it, you had a nice thing going with Daredevil, and along comes Bullseye with the stabby-stabby to ruin it all.
But here's the thing: Get excited, lady, 'cause you're not dead!
I'm pretty sure you could head on over to the East Coast and catch up with Matt, if you really wanted to.
But you don't. Because then you couldn't moan and groan about your bullshit for issue after issue, all while slicing and dicing other wacko ninjas.

I don't enjoy What's the Meaning of My Depressing Life stories.
It's a personal preference, so you may think this is the bees knees.

The art, on the other hand, was absolutely lovely!

description

If I could rate it simply on the art and colors? 5 stars...easy.
Beautiful!

Too bad it had such a draggy go-nowhere plot, because it's a visually stunning graphic novel.

This is the spoiler free review of Elektra (2014) the entire run. If you would like to read the spoiler full review complete with lots of great pictures please visit my blog at https://amanjareads.com/2019/12/16/el...

This run of Elektra is 11 connected issues of action, emotion, and beautiful artwork. For the first run in years and years Elektra is given a standalone that actually features her in her own story with her own conflicts and character development. All too frequently Elektra is shoved aside to be just Daredevil's ex love, or worse, given a title only to have it focus on The Hand instead of her.

In these issues of Elektra she is given a contract that involves actually bringing the target back alive. As she completes this journey she faces off with a bad guy known as Bloody Lips. I had never heard of this villain before and he has apparently only appeared in this run of Elektra. Which is a shame because he was delightfully creepy.

He consumes his enemies (literally) and gains their memories and powers. He has gotten a taste of Elektra and he wants more.

Elektra has darker memories than most. Especially since she has been killed and returned. Bullseye haunts her for this so of course by the end of the book she must face him, her greatest foe. But in between she also battles The Hand, the Assassins Guild, and many individual assassins along the way including Lady Bullseye who develops a very interesting power set in this arc.

Throughout her journey she does what she does best. Keeps going. She doesn't let obstacles like injuries or dying get in her way. She just takes a deep breath and keeps on fighting.

She also deals with her inner demons of being a killer and what life could have been had she chosen a different path. This is typical territory for an Elektra comic but this arc does it better than most by spreading out her trauma and not just focusing on her being an orphan or having lost love. She gets a full spectrum of issues which makes her more of a full character instead of just someone's daughter or someone's lover.

In between Elektra dealing with the heavy emotional issues there are panels of pure action fun. We see Elektra fight through all terrain, in the air between airplanes, underwater, on Monster Island, on snowy mountain tops, and even on dragon back. It has pretty much anything you could want from a comic book!

I honestly don't see what all of the complaints are about this book. I truly enjoyed it and it's definitely one of the better runs Elektra has gotten up to this point. The plot does get a little over the top but that's the fun of comics! Just go with it!

She is an anti-hero for sure. You may not want to root for someone who kills so prolifically. But she does still have a humanity inside of her. She can still make the call to save a life instead of end it and she can still feel guilt and pain and grief and all of those human emotions that her biggest enemies have long ago abandoned. She is complex and not always likable but that makes her a better character and a more interesting read.

Also, the art in this book is awesome!

Fortunately, one thing Elektra comics usually have is crazy, ethereal, mesmerizing artwork and this one is top form for her.

I can definitely recommend this run even if I set aside my Elektra love bias. Please give it an honest shot with an open mind and don't listen to the haters. Elektra is truly more than just a side character from another comic and she deserves high quality runs of her own. This is a good place to see her shine.

Phewf, this one was steenky!

OK, so continuing Marvel’s inspired plan of giving their baddies their own titles - Magneto, Loki - is Elektra, whose series is the worst of the bunch. She’s already not a very well-known character but throw in nothing but unknown characters along with her and you’ve got a wholly unengaging story.

But wait! you say, relatively unknown characters can sometimes be interesting to read about too! And to that, I agree - if the writer is any good at characterisation. Unfortunately this series has the co-writer of the mediocre DC New 52 series, Batwoman, W. Haden Blackman, and he proves even less capable of writing strong female leads over at Marvel.

Bloodlines is about Elektra accepting a job from Matchmaker (who?) to hunt down a “famous” (even though this is the first time anyone has ever heard about this guy) lethal assassin Cape Crow (who?) while being hunted by a maniac wearing a lion’s head called Bloody Lips (who?). Along the way we’ll meet Scalphunter (who?) and Lady Bullseye (Lady? Wha..?) in a pointless story you won’t give a crap about!

Forgetting the other characters (done), Blackman’s version of Elektra is totally one-note and flat. She speaks in this droning monotone and there’s absolutely no sense of personality behind her dull words. In this book, she’s nothing more than a cipher who’s an adept martial arts fighter - one of many templates over at Marvel.

But one thing Blackman’s been very lucky with is being paired with extremely talented artists. With Batwoman he worked with JH Williams III and Amy Reeder among others, while he’s working with Michael Del Mundo for Elektra. The first issue alone contains some of the best art there’s ever been in an Elektra comic as we get two splash pages in a row of Elektra dancing across the pages switching from her imagined life as a dancer to her reality as an assassin, her flowing red ribbon turning into blood splatter as she slashes her way through The Hand’s ninjas.

The book is filled with awesome visuals from Bloody Lips’ entrance (awful name for a bad guy by the way) to underwater hallucinations (also, how long can Elektra hold her breath for - an hour?!), to aerial fights with grenades, this is one helluva great looking comic. It’s such a shame that Del Mundo’s work is in service to such a weak script.

Of the many Marvel NOW! titles launched this year, Elektra’s down there as one of the most underwhelming. Great art, terrible writing/story - the search for a good Elektra book continues!

Wow. This shit is lame. The art was pretty in an ethereal sorta way, but also annoying for 5 full issues.

The storyline? Ugh. Elektra has to find a super assassin and bring him in, but others are on the trail as well...and everything isn't as it seems...yawn.

This shouldn't ever have been published. It's like they just put lipstick on a pig from 1983 and called it new.

Don't waste your time reading, if you want, just flick thru the pictures.

¡GENIAL! No solo el guión es bueno sino que, además, el dibujo me ha dejado con la boca abierta. Consigue que te pierdas en la psique de Elektra y también en la de sus enemigos. ¡Deseando seguir con la historia!

So, everything I know about Elektra is from that infamous Daredevil movie with Ben Affleck (I actually thought it wasn't that bad, but what the heck do I know?).
It seems like Marvel is giving every random guy they own a title lately and I was curious about this. Let me start my saying that the art is gorgeous. It seems like Del Mundo is painting, not drawing and it's such a different style to what I'm used to that it's such a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, the story doesn't live up to the art. Elektra is sick of New York so she goes to see The Matchmaker (spoiler, she matches assassins with would-be-killed-people), whoever that is. She enlist her in bringing back alive a absolutely known (in which world?) Cape Crow and off to the mission we go. There's a guy dressed as a cheetah or some feline (great way to give felines a bad reputation, you moron!) who loves killing people and eating then later and is on Elektra's way. And yadda yadda yadda.
There's nothing inherently wrong with the story but there's also nothing really interesting either. Show me a villain I can fear! Or people I know! Give Elektra a hobby that doesn't involve blood flying around before the poor woman has to spend all her money in therapy!

I'll give the second volume a try if only because of the art and here's hoping there's a more interesting story coming.

FYI, if you want to read a good comic about an assassin, pick up the new Black Widow. Also pretty awesome-looking and the story is good, unlike this.

This is a kind of bland but not boring take on Elektra. It feels a little dis-associated and dream-like, both with the misty artwork, indirect dialog, and strangely paced narrative. The undersea sequences were quite well done, but otherwise it's an entertaining spin without being terribly memorable.

Elektra takes a contract on a legendary hitman who has been in hiding for years. Then his son shows up and offers a contract NOT to kill his father. Then a weird assassin named Bloody Lips shows up, and thing get really weird. The art is very stylistic, but not bad. Overall a middle of the road Elektra story that doesn't really break new ground, but is still entertaining.

The cover font and credits page scream Frank Miller's Elektra Assassin. The artwork even takes clues from that series' artist Bill Sienkiewicz. I haven't read much non Frank Miller Elektra. I have no idea what she's been up to in the last 20 years or so in the Marvel universe.

This series has a nice fresh start. I feel like I haven't missed anything important. And, if I had skipped this series, I also wouldn't feel like I had missed anything. Pick up if you're into nice artwork and lots of fighting, but this story lacks substance and a hook - I really don't care what happens... and we all know Elektra will survive in the end.

I have some mixed feelings about this. Elektra is one of my favorite character and I haven't read about her in a while. This story is kind of nightmarish and has some good moments, but it seems to lack something. The art on the other side is stunning!

Well I'll echo the comments of pretty much every single person who has read this and just say how amazingly wonderful the artwork is! Del Mundo is some sort of artist genius and his drawings are more like paintings displayed in fancy art galleries. I loved the art so much!

I was wary going in to this as I have never read anything of Elektra and I've only ever heard bad things from people about her from both the Daredevil and Elektra movies. I however absolutely loved the story and thought it was really interesting and well done. The characters are fantastic and I want to look further into a couple that I encountered reading this. I will definitely be picking up more Elektra in the future and will hope it's as good as she is one heck of a badass.

When I want to read some Elektra because she's a cool assassin but her comic runs are all shit lol rip.

I know I don't know a lot of characters but also who tf was anyone in here? We have Elektra on contract from someone to go kill someone and then someone else is coming for Elektra. They all had distant names, like I was supposed to know who they were but we actually don't get any intro at all.

The story was just so confusing too and then when I was not confused I was just annoyed because it was so lame. Elektra had no personality. She stares, she says things without emotion and then has no emotion at all anyway. Really disappointed.

Bloody Lips is the worst name for a baddie that anyone could possibly make up. Cursed.

The only reason this gets 2 stars not 1 is because the art was GORGEOUS. I read comics and I lowkey forget they are full of art but this one felt so ART art that it should be hanging up in a museum somewhere. It was just so beautiful and for what?

Not massively impressed with the story. I love Elektra in Netflix's Daredevil but in this one, I dunno, it just seemed like she didn't really have much of a personality? Anyway, I did love the artwork, and I have the second volume anyway, so I'll probably read that soon too.

Disegni molto belli e particolari. La trama ha uno sviluppo abbastanza banale ma tutto sommato è una storia che si fa leggere. Niente di assolutamente impedibile, ecco.

Ok the art is phenomenal. I loved the style and so many panels were well done. I really loved the drowning hallucination/magic scene. Bloody Lips was cool too. I wish his defeat wasn't so lame. I had hoped he'd stick around this run longer (or at least have a more epic end). I enjoyed diving into Elektra's inner conflicts. A solid Elektra comic to start with as it is my first time reading her

I agree with many other sentiments written here. Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of the character Elektra, and she has had some wonderful stories in the past. The art is often interesting, though the coloring can be jarring and feel out of place sometimes because the palette seems to shift for no reason at times. The art is reminiscent of Sienkiewicz's work on Elektra in the 80s, but not quite as organic and inspired. At times the art feels overwrought for the sake of being interesting rather than being genuinely interesting and having the busyness simply be a side-effect of the creativity. But, visually it is worth checking out. The story. Hmm. Well, while not a particularly bad story in the sense that the writing and pacing aren't in themselves terribly flawed, the main problem here is that I walked away from this volume not really interested in any of the characters involved. Other than Elektra and a few quick scenes with Daredevil and Bullseye, most of the characters are no-name players and Blackman doesn't really develop them in any meaningful way that calls for us, the reader, to give a damn about them. Will this one live? Will this one die? Ultimately I just didn't care, and that's at the core of my complaint with this book. If this book appeals to you visually it might be worth getting. For me, I don't think I'll be back for Vol 2.

I bought this trade on sale because I liked the art, and I'm easily satisfied with that purchase. Mundo's art in this comic is something to behold as the careful brushstrokes and deep colours make this reminiscent of the Japanese art Elektra is (stereotypically?) based off. The colours are breathtaking, and the contrast of the light blues and whites against the harsh reds, whilst not overly original, are very well done, and something I personally enjoy a lot.
As I said, I bought this trade for a the art, and thus didn't expect much from the story. The story itself is fairly boring, and seems to be the usual comic plot of "There's someone who is an x (in this case an assassin), I am a better x". So nothing mind blowing but entertaining nonetheless. I would say I'm sick of "edgy" comics stories about assassins reconciling with their past and whatnot but I did buy an Elektra comic, so that's my fault!
Overall this is a nice little book, with amazing art rivalling that of Phil Noto and an average story that was still enjoyable.

Frank Miller did some of his best work on her, but since Marvel brought her back Elektra's solo runs have tended to be sorry, stuttering things, with even creators who are generally entertaining struggling to take her beyond scantily-clad ninja bad girl (or is she?) cliches. And this time round, I didn't even know the creators, so I wasn't expecting much at all. My mistake. The story isn't anything wildly original (Elektra takes a contract to track down a legendary assassin and bring him in alive - others have different plans), but it's nicely constructed and dotted with intriguing new characters. The art, though, is simply beautiful. Coming across a little like David Mack with the self-indulgence dialled down, del Mundo dances from expressionist nightmares to symbolist-styled underwater halls and smoke-wreathed ancient landscapes. Gorgeous stuff.

Elektra is a graphic novel with stunning artwork. Its some of the best I have ever seen in graphic novels. Its totally different fromt he rest in this aspect, like look at the cover! Look! Isnt it amazing?

But the storyline wasnt very interesting, it was confusing a lot of the time and really required a reread. I didn't have the chance because of library due dates. I didn't enjoy reading it, but I enjoyed looking at it.

My first comic about Elektra, the drawings were gorgeous and the story captivating. We follow both Elektra and a cannibal serial killer on their run to find a famous assassin whose bounty is high. The story took time to reveal the characters's past and it gave a grave touch to the story. They traveled around the world and it was weird to see Elektra so far away from the city. She's interesting and I will continue reading her adventures.
