Flyers of the First Kingdom #1

The Ryder of the Night

Rate this book
I am half of a whole.

A dragon without a ryder.

My kind are on the brink of extinction, I should be out there fighting, leading the flyers of the First Kingdom. But without my ryder I’m grounded.

She was the key to my magic and my future. But as soon as I found her she was stolen away, hidden somehow from even our bond’s pull.

I’d searched the Twelve Kingdoms for over a decade and lost all hope. Until my brother discovered her—living in a cult in the middle of nowhere, growing the very poison that’s killing my kind.

Raised with no knowledge of magic or creatures like me, she thinks I’m a monster from her nightmares come to life.

Admittedly, kidnapping her probably wasn’t my best move, but I had to get her out of there.

Now I need to convince her the life she knew was a lie, but time is slipping away. If she doesn’t accept who she is and learn to harness her power, it will consume her—leaving me ryderless again.

She wants to go back to that lie of a life I rescued her from. Too bad we didn’t leave anything to go back to. But the more she refuses the truth, the closer I get to losing her again. So I make her an offer she can’t refuse.

Only, I don’t know how I’ll keep my end of the bargain, because I can’t let her go now I’ve found her. She is more than just my ryder.

But that’s a secret for another day. We have training to do.

Lesson Ryde or die.

Welcome to the First Kingdom.

First off, I’m a sucker for dragons, so I went in knowing this was automatically gonna be a hit for me. Follow that up with several of my favorite tropes, and a grumpy MMC and I was 😍😍

Fantastic start to the series, and I cannot wait to dive into book two!

What to expect:
- dragon flyer + his ryder
- grumpy x grumpy
- forced proximity
- enemies to lovers
- he falls first
- fated mates
- only one bed

Ohh this is gonna be a good series. The first in a new dragon series, this had so many things that make me happy. Dragons? ✔️ Magic? ✔️ fae? ✔️ a cult? ✔️ yes. You read that right. Omg. I flew through this, even though it was a slow burn of a romance. But the story was just that good.

❤️ Tropes ❤️
💋 slow burn
💋 enemies to lovers
💋 witty banter

Nyx is a dragon, and he has been searching for his ryder for decades. The other half of his whole. He met her when he was eight, and she was three, and then she was taken and hidden away. But his brother thinks he has found her. Nyx rescues her from a fatal position only to find out that she spent her life being brainwashed in a religious cult. Can they tolerate each other long enough to work together and form the bond that is pulling them together?

Thank you to Literally Yours PR for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

One thing I love in my fantasy books is dragons. Especially if they’re grumpy and sarcastic. I never thought to put the dragon as the love interest though, but this is what this book did. The MMC can shift back into a fae, but his mate and ryder is the FMC. She was taken away when she was young, and being held in a settlement that taught her that magic was bad and evil, and so she was brainwashed. Nyx, our MMC, has spent all this time looking for her. Once reunited, it takes Zaria a little time to warm up to everything but she does relatively quickly. Though it’s hard to be told that your whole life is essentially a lie. Watching the mate bond snap into place naturally was cute. This book was an adventure, and I can’t wait to see how to story continues in the next one!

Thank you Literally Yours PR for the read!

The Ryder of the Night is the first book in the Flyers of First Kingdom series and Eden Eaves has created a mystical fantasy world filled with magic and adventure and all manners of mystical beings including dragons within the twelve kingdoms. The hero Nyx is a dragon but to fulfil his destiny he needs his fated ryder. Zaria was stolen and hidden away, raised to fear Nyx and his kind. She’s grown up thinking they are monsters from her nightmares and her world is turned on its head as she comes to realise everything she has been told is a lie. Now he’s found her it’s a race against time to get her to accept what she is and their symbiotic relationship.

With great world building, this was a strong slow burn, enemies to lovers' story and I loved the development of Nyx and Zaria’s relationship as she spent more time with him leading to some wicked banter between them. I’ll admit it did take me a couple of chapters to get into this book but now I can’t wait for the release of the next one. The Ryder of the Night does end on a cliffhanger but it’s more of a ‘to be continued’ rather than throwing your kindle/book at the wall type.

How did he “lose” the mate that grew up In a religious cult? Did he know her as a baby? Seeing how she’s practically human, and of course a virgin to boot, that’s just gross. So much wrong with this “story”. Also the implied bestiality come on. Another overpowered virginal girl taken by the magical immortal who just so happens to be a sex god in bed. Can’t have our fantasy females be used now can we?

The Ryder Of The Night is the collaboration between two romance authors that go under the pen name Eden Eaves. While the book was a mixture of good and bad I believe it is a decent start to a romantasy series with good potential. The book has good bones and a lot of untapped potential.

While The Ryder of the Night offered an intriguing premise, the world itself remained frustratingly opaque. The lack of world building left me piecing together the setting through guesswork. The magic system suffered a similar fate. The rules and limitations of magic were never clearly defined, leaving me confused and wanting more explanation. Unfortunately, the pacing also faltered. The story included several scenes that could have been trimmed or even eliminated entirely, as they didn’t contribute to the plot or character development. Typos, along with the jarring use of modern phrases like “sweatpants” and “your way or the highway,” further disrupted the immersion in this fantastical world. I yearned to learn more about the central threats, Vestar and Vivi Mortui. A deeper understanding of these antagonists would have heightened the stakes and added weight to the conflict.

Pushing through the first half of The Ryder of the Night was a slog. The story felt clunky and unfocused, on the verge of collapse at times. Thankfully, there were some redeeming qualities. Zaria’s background in a strict anti magic cult was a captivating hook, and the mind bond between Kol and Nyx, fueled by their undeniable love, was a promising element. But even with these bright spots, it felt like the authors really struggled to launch the narrative on a solid foundation.

Zaria’s initial distrust of Nyx was understandable, given her sheltered upbringing in the anti magic cult. However, her continued resistance even after learning the truth felt frustrating. Similarly, Nyx’s actions sometimes came across as unnecessarily combative. It felt like the authors leaned too heavily on the “enemies-to-lovers” trope, creating tension that could have been better served by a more gradual shift in their relationship.

Another point that detracted from the story was the portrayal of the characters’ maturity. Despite being described as adults, their behavior often resembled that of teenagers. Both Zaria and Nyx exhibited bouts of pouting and moodiness that felt out of place for characters supposedly seasoned enough to handle such a critical situation.

Thankfully, the second half offered some redemption. The plot picked up steam, hinting at a grander scheme and introducing new characters and locations. While the world building remained a sticking point, there was a sense of progress that kept me engaged. Despite Zaria’s somewhat abrupt change in personality, the story finally felt like it was moving in the right direction.

Zaria, while not a terrible character, didn’t quite reach “strong female lead” status. Both she and Nyx lacked the depth and unique quirks that make characters truly memorable. Their romance, though featuring well written intimate scenes, felt awkward and forced. The spicy scenes sizzled, but the emotional connection needed more simmer.

The ending featured a brilliant yet heartbreaking twist. However, the major plot revelation lacked believability; it was abrupt and seemed out of place.

While this series shows great promise, its success hinges on improved execution and editing that would unlock the series’ full potential.

So first of all, there were some mild editing errors—like some actions and dialogue (that wasn’t part of mind voice) were italicized— and inconsistent spellings for certain things—like sometimes it was Asra and then it was Asar? And then there was ass versus arse, with the latter being used the most, so I’m assuming that’s what was intended.

That being said, I easily breezed through these small errors because the story line was so. Freaking. GOOD. Like if it was possible to give this book 10 stars I totally would because I was not able to put this book down since the moment I picked it up. It has been so long since I’ve found a fantasy book (besides all the SJM books and Fourth Wing) that I have thoroughly and absolutely loved.

The banter was one of my favorite parts of the entire book, but the lore was AMAZING. So different from most fantasy books I’ve read so far. I loved that it was purely fantasy but had such a modern-ish vibe to it.

Rhys and Feyre are number one on my list of favorite book couples, with Cassian and Nesta coming at number two, but Nyx and Zaria are tying for spot three with Xaden and Violet.

Like previously stated, I loved the banter between Nyx and Zaria. It made their transition from enemies to lovers and then to mates even more of a beautiful journey. I also adored that the story was told from both of their perspectives and that we got to see much needed character development happen for BOTH of them and not just Zaria. Towards the end, our eyes are opened to the fact that even Nyx was conditioned to believe certain things as well. Not only from his emotionally closed off father, but also by the very kingdom he serves. I mean why tell flyers and ryders that if their melds fail or don’t work completely the first time that that’s it? I feel like there wouldn’t have been so many flyer/ryder deaths if they had been able to reach their true potential.

Now to the tough part….KOL NEEDS TO COME BACK. What the hell is up with authors making me fall in love with certain characters only to break my heart in the end? This happened with Fourth Wing when Liam died. And it almost ALMOST happened in ACOWAR when Rhys temporarily died. Like I freaking cannot deal with the emotional stress. Please stawp

Anyways, I CANNOT wait for the second book. Here’s to praying to the Goddess Kalilah that my baby will come back or some kind of miracle. I’m gonna continue sobbing now!

I thought I didnt like dragon books but then I changed.

To be honest, I’m still a bit of a dragon virgin. I lost my dragon v card to Fourth Wing (Puff the Magic Dragon and Zog by Julia Donaldson don’t count). A friend tipped me off that The Ryder of the Night was going to be the next best thing so I grabbed it.

I loved this book so much, I read it twice. I’ve been completely immersed in the 12 Kingdoms. I want to know everything about the flyers and ryders, about the fae and the origin stones. I’ve already decided. Mine is going to be ametrine like Zaria.

The world that the authors have created is so deep with much to uncover. There’s evil threatening the kingdoms from the Vivi Mortui and there’s an unknown evil hidden in plain sight.

There’s magic from the fae. Poor Zaria Sorelli was kept hidden away in a village, unaware that magic exists. Totally unaware that she was destined to be the Ryder of the next regent himself. Nyx Asra is going to lead the legions but first he has to persuade Zaria that she is his chosen ryder. Oh please get your dragons wings out for me. What else can you part change into dragon form? Hell yes dragon boy!

Favourite quotes:

“As first son of the Asra line, you are bound by the Goddess to lead the dragons.”

“Our magic works better together. Where you fly, I fly.”

“You are all I see,” she whispered against my lips.” And you are my entire universe.” I cupped her face. “If we don’t make it, know that I have loved every day with you.”

Can’t wait for more. Also I am not happy with the authors and they better have something up their sleeves to make it all better.

"The Ryder of the Night" pleasantly surprised me. It delivered with a slow burn enemies-to-lovers dynamic between the main characters, creating engaging tension throughout the whole story. The banter between them added a delightful layer to the story as well. Plus, the MMC's twin and their twinbonding ability to speak telepathically over long distances added an intriguing layer to the story. I really enjoyed the unique concept of dragon shifters and their ryder, and the added depth of knowing that not all pairs are guaranteed mates. While the world building felt a bit sparse, I'm eager to explore this world more as the series continues.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would confidently give it a solid 4 stars.

Where do i even begin?! This was such a great easy read for me i didnt want to put it down. It had the perfect amount of fantasy to romance in every way and left you hanging on for more to see what was going to happen next! The only downfall is it ends on a slight cliff hanger! Theres an important piece missing that the fmc is supposed to give to the mmc and it didnt happen yet so i am hoping that its included in the next book! Overall such a fantastic read and left me shocked and just wanting more!

Wow! I was blown away by this action packed dragon romantasy!!

The world building was well developed and still easy to follow. I adore all the characters especially a certain brother!!

I do strongly recommend getting a box of tissues because you will be bawling your eyes out at the end. 🥹😭

The fmc is a dragon ryder and the mmc is her dragon shifter. They hate each other and there is so much tension and angst🔥🔥🔥

If you like magical dragon romantasy books definitely read The Ryder of the Night♥️

It's a fun dragon shifter book!! A great start to a series! I can't wait to get more!

The characters each have their own personalities, and they clash at times! It brings a realistic feel to how someone would really act in these situations!

There are some parts that will rip your heart out 😭...

It's dual pov which makes it even better!

Highly recommend!

I'm passionate about fantasy literature, yet I often approach new authors with caution. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this particular one. This, was really good

As always
🥁🥁🥁

🙌DUAL POV 🙌

I've only read a few books with dragon shifters in them and this one takes first place.

I really loved this story, and everything about it. The writing was great, the lore was so good, and all the characters are *chefs kiss* I was hooked from page one.

The banter in this book, the back and fourth playfulness, this would make a great audiobook or if graphic audio picked it up I think it would work amazingly

I also went into this not knowing it wasn't a standalone and I can't wait to continue, do much happened in here.
I laughed, my heart got flutters, and I even got sad.

I will most definitely be continuing the series

📚 Review: The Ryder of the Night by Eden Eaves

Genre: romantasy (romance + fantasy) 🐉❤️‍🔥
Book 1 of “Flyers of the First Kingdom”

Tropes: Dragon shifters x Fae riders romance; Dragon romance ✔️
Slow burn; Forced proximity; Fated mates ✔️
Hate to love; Grumpy x grumpy; Found family ✔️
Magic world; Different worlds; Cult society ✔️

My rating: 4.5 to 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I need you, Sol. We are an extension of each other. One doesn’t work without the other.”

I absolutely loved this debut of the writing duo Eden Eaves (they are two bestselling authors writing under this pen name). I love romance and fantasy and furthermore I love romantasy. Give me dragons and I’ll go crazy and apparently that’s what happened lol.

This is the story of Sol, a fae and a Ryder who was taken from her home when she was little, hidden away at a cult society that lived with no magic, making everyone in it believe magic wasn’t real. And Nix a dragon shifter (fae in his alternate form), meant to be the commander of the flying force of the Kingdom who had his Ryder stolen and therefore his born right to being the General’s successor stolen as well. It all starts with him finding her again and rescuing her from a guaranteed death by kidnapping her.

After that begins the journey of her discovering the real magical world and its history as well as starting her training to be a Ryder. And there’s also a little problem: her magic seems to be lost or forgotten, and without it, they can’t fully merge their powers, which are meant to work together as one.

Regarding the characters, Nix was infuriating many times due to the pressures he felt over his responsibility to his Kingdom. He felt like a failure, unable to fulfill them, which made him bitter and grumpy, and sometimes even an a*hole. I like how his characters started to open up towards the end and can’t wait to keep seeing this new side of him.

I also liked the powerful heroine, Zaria, how much she had survived during the times she was taken away and raised in that cult, and how much she learnt and grew when she started her new life.
Although they’re fated mates (swoon worthy), this was a slow burn and hate-to-love, enemish-to-lovers trope, so the building of their romance is at an unhurried pace that I also enjoyed.

Moreover I loved Kol, Nix’s twin brother, who also became a great friend to Zaria. He was loyal, kind, caring, and very funny as well. And I also liked Kiera, the healer. She was smart and a great friend. I can’t wait to see how her story develops.

I loved the idea of this world and can’t wait to know more about its history and the plots that surround them as well. I need to know how the whole thing develops asap, just kidding, or not.

“I would do it a hundred times over. I don’t want to do this without you.”

An unexpected 4.25/5

The book had a little bit of a slow start, but when it began, it BEGAN. The story took off and never stopped. There was action, romance, and definitely some tears. A solid book for someone who is trying fantasy for the first time.

I was immediately drawn to Chol, even though he wasn’t a main character. He took Zaria under his wing and made sure that she felt safe and taken care of in the beginning. He is a guy that you hope to have around and on your side.

Nyxia, Chol’s twin, was arrogant and hardheaded—the complete opposite of his brother. He is one of those guys who is tough on the outside but a sweetheart deep down. As the story went on, I grew to really root for him as he let his true self be shown.

Zaria, a sweet girl, has fallen prey to a cult that she has grown up in. I have always been obsessed with learning the ins and outs of cults, so seeing things from her POV was interesting.

A truly mid wish fulfillment book with a lot of wasted potential. I love me some wish fulfillment books but somewhere after the middle point I realized that was it, things weren't going to peak after that.

The writing is not great, the characters often speak as if to the reader instead of each other. It wouldn't stand out that much if other parts hit all the right places but they didn't, and so the writing drew more attention from me than it should have.

The plot... don't read this for the plot.

The romance was stewing for a long time only to fizzle out in one anticlimactic moment as if left to simmer for too long. I wish there were more pages dedicated to the mutual push and pull rather than Zaria's tantrums and Nyx's indecisiveness. For half the book they were pushing each other away and then (not suddenly but too fast for me) they became besties. The sex scenes felt too perfunctory to me.

Overall it started great but failed to fully realize its potential.

Well....I will just come right out and say that I almost DNF this book at about 16%, 30%, and 50% BUT I will say, that begrudgingly I am reading the second book right now, right after this. I do NOT think this will cure anyone's Fourth Wing itch...the writing is a bit off and there are editing errors which drive me nuts!. It took FOREVER for the two of them to figure their shit out and it was not even in an adult manner. I have no idea how old Nyx actually is but he acts like a 12-year old boy most of the time. Most of the action happens in the last 25% of the book but it reads quickly. Go into this one with low expectations.

I was not as invested in the story, as I would have liked, even though there are some aspects to the story, that kept me reading.
Somehow the mystery around the FMC, not knowing where she comes from, around her connection to the dragon shifters, kept me reading. Trying to find out, why her community did what they did, like growing some kind of plant (dragonbane), which acts agains dragons.
But the chemistry between FMC and MMC was kinda meh.
Some turns in the story were solved quite easy or the explanation was kinda bland.
I think the overall story might still be intersting. I am not yet sure, if I will continue.

I don't normally like fantasy but I enjoyed this one. I really like Zaria and how she doesn't back down from Nyx. There relationship is entertaining. One minute they're fighting, then they're kissing and they're ignoring each other. I do feel sorry for Zaria and the life she had in the village but I'm glad she ends up where she should be. I enjoyed the plot of this book, it was very entertaining. The only downfall is your left with so many unanswered questions. The biggest one I have is what did Kol leave for Nyx in the letter before he left?? I need the next one.

The setting and story were interesting, and I would have read the rest of the series except the main characters were very annoying. Even though the author has them being aware of being jerks, she kept it in because they were both stressed out. Well, as a reader, I wasn't stressed out until I had to read through a very long sequence of THEM being stressed out.

Further the BIG THING that's blocking her magic was so obvious, I couldn't believe the author thought we'd accept that it was SO HARD to figure out.

So no more for me.
