This is a terrific book for lovers of the ukulele and an amazing book to give to someone just starting. It has a very detailed history of the instrument, of players across the ages, and give one permission to relax and do what one wants with this marvelous little instrument.
I highly recommend it. And I'm going to spend more time with it and the accompanying web site http://willgrovewhite.com.
BTW: The author is a member of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. If you get a chance to see them perform live, go. They're a lot of fun and wonderful musicians.
Fun! Non intimidating and filled with good practical advice. Liked the section on celebrity ukulele players and great references to You Tube gems. LOVED the graphics.
This book is fun for any ukulele enthusiast. The history of the uke and the players over time gives the uke more depth. Great gift for any aspiring plucker.
Very humorous knowledgable and an incredible history of the Ukulele. I enjoyed this from start to finish a must for all Uke players from beginner to advanced.
If you want to learn to play the ukulele, this little gem of a book will get you started. You will not regret it. I can’t get the rest of the stars up.
Pretty cool book about the ukulele by one of the members of the fabulous Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Starts with a who's who in the uke world, then gets into the instruments and some musical pieces to practice with chords, strum patterns, some theory about chord inversions and more. Not necessarily a beginner's book, but certainly a perfect book for someone who has plunked a few chords and wants to know more about this sweet little instrument. Written in happy tones, just like the uke plays, with humour throughout.
I felt plucky right away and I wanted to practice immediately so it had its purpose. Plus, now I know more about Tiny Tim than I ever thought I would. Highly recommended for those with an interest in ukes.
Yep. This is it. This is the best foundational text for the ukulele that I have read. It provides a gentle - but engaging - introduction into the uke. There is some history. There is some celebrity watching. But there is also a step by step guide into the playing of the instrument. The goal is to teach a chord and ensure the reader can play a song at speed. There is also attention to right hand technique and adding variety to the sound emerging from the instrument.
This is a wonderful introduction to the uke. While it does have the obligatory "This is a C chord" and "Here's how you play Frere Jacques", it's more of a history and cultural examination of the ukulele. It also has a very interesting section about famous uke players that you maybe didn't know about. I bought this book and it was money well spent.
An excellent starter book for someone with interest in the ukulele. The information leading into the instructional portion of the book is great motivation.
