The Marsden Family drama moves to 1939 and the next generation
Intertwined with historical events, we experience the social climate in the country, as it moves closer to war, as seen through the eyes of the various members of the family.
Using extensive research, award-winning author, Alan Reynolds, brings the past to life at a pivotal time in English history in a compelling novel. The increasing threat from Hitler, and the British Government’s attempt at appeasement; the IRA bombing campaign, and the efforts of the British Secret Service to thwart their aims, are among the key events which shaped the world in these very uncertain times.
…But not everyone will see the outbreak of hostilities.
This is the 4th book of the Marsden family saga and it is such a page turner. After reading many books of this author I can say that the characters he creates are always so believable with their faults and virtues that sometimes it was easy to forget that I was reading fiction. There must have been a lot of historical research done to present the readers with the exact historical setting and events. I enjoyed learning more about the dramatic events of that era in Europe and the UK specifically. This book is the perfect ending for the series. (S Mestre of Circle of Books)
This was an excellent end to a series of 4 books following the Marsden family. Starting at the beginning of World War One, it follows their trials and tribulations throughout the war and into peacetime. Finally, taking the reader to the very beginning of World War Two, this is a wonderful slice of social history. Reading the saga about this Northern family and how their individual lives were affected by the war and beyond is bringing history to life in a very astute way. Whilst all four books are novels and not works of non-fiction, there is enough fact in them to make very good reading for any student taking war studies as a subject. I have read several of Alan Reynolds books, and like the others, Uncertain Times and the 3 other books in the series that precedes it, did not disappoint. I could happily have read on.
