A life or death decision leads Sergeant Jessica Raker to swap the Metropolitan Police for trouble up north, but old enemies are on her tail . . .
A split-second decision has life-changing consequences for Metropolitan Police firearms officer Jessica Raker when she fatally wounds the son of a notorious organized crime chief during a robbery in Greenwich - and discovers her husband has been having an affair.
With her career, her marriage and her life in danger, Jess is sent back to her home town of Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley to take up a sergeant role in Lancashire police. But as she throws herself into dealing with a hostage situation up on Dead Man's Stake Farm and a body discovered in a reservoir on her first day, her enemies are plotting their revenge - and they're closer than she thinks . . .
Nick Oldham was born in Belthorn, Lancashire, in 1956. He has been a police officer since the age of nineteen, spending the majority of his service in operational roles, before retiring in 2005. He lives with his partner, Belinda, on the outskirts of Preston.
This first book in a new series sets the tone for more ‘adventures’ with Jessica Raker. She’s a strong main character, a woman in a tough job who suddenly sees her life turn around in ways she would have never believed if you told her before. Having to move aways from London because there is a price on her head, it’s lucky she can transfer to Lancashire where she spent her childhood. Her career suddenly veering off her chosen path, her husband veering of in other ways and her teenage children needing her now more than ever, Jess sometimes feels she’s leading a couple of completely different lives in one.
Anyway, Jess is tough but not infallible and now she has to deal with what happened. I liked the clever way Jess’ past and present came together in this story, and I can see how this book is the foundation for more books in this series.
A solid three star book for me, which I picked up in the Download Now section of Edelweiss.
Wow! A new series from Nick Oldman. Sergeant Jessica Raker, a member of the armed response team shoots dead a jewel thief a split second before he opens up on her. There’s an immediate grilling and inquiry from the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Her identity is protected during the court case. Jessica is cleared. However word on the street is Jessica has had a hit taken out on her. Costigan, the Detective Chief Inspector who gives her the news is gunned down as they’re both returning from coffee. Was he the target or was Jessica? Jessica refuses witness protection but takes a position at Clitheroe Police station, Lancashire, where she came from. It’s a promotion. The constable who’s temporarily filled the position nose is out of joint. Jessica hopes he won’t be awkward but she’s not going to take any grief from him. Her misogynist governor is not pleased and despite calling in favors still can’t find out how Jessica obtained the position. The patch she’s assigned to starts with a bang. An older man from the Pendleton Care Home has drowned. Jessica is suspicious! Then there’s Maggie Horsefield. They’d been together all school. Maggie now runs the family scrapyard business and it seems it might be linked to the drug trade. Then everything breaks lose and Jessica finds herself fighting for her life. Must admit to staying up reading this to the wee small hours of the morning. Can’t wait to read the next Jessica Raker novel
A Severn House ARC via NetGalley. Many thanks to the author and publisher.
I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC in return for an honest review. Here it is.
Nick Oldham is a proven master storyteller and fans of his Henry Christie books are in for a real treat with Death at Dead Man's Stake. Oldham has started a completely new series with new characters which are so refreshing to learn about. Jessica Raker is a no-nonsense police sergeant who justifiable shoots and kills an armed robber in London. But unknown to her, the trials and tribulations of being involved in such a harrowing event - both professionally and personally - are the least of her problems.
The dead robber is the errant son of a notorious crime family, and the father, and head of the crime gang wants her dead.
In order to keep her safe, she is transferred to a rural part of Lancashire, from where she hails, to take up the role of uniform sergeant. Struggling to come to terms with her husband's infidelity, she faces resistance from her new colleagues, both junior and senior to herself, without realising the depth of the threat against her in what is supposed to be a safe haven.
Ghosts from her distant past collide with threats both in Lancashire and from London in unexpected and unseen ways, leading to an explosive denouement at Dead Man's Stake.
She was drawn into a near-death police incident there on arrival and now faces a new threat there on this lonely hillside; but this time it's personal and she is cornered with no way out.
A highly recommended opener to what will be an undoubtedly superb new series, I can't wait for the next book to see what happens, hereafter.
'A masterful combination of city and rural crime colliding as one'.
'Jessica Raker is a character you will follow forever.'
'Cops, robbers, bodies and deception: a perfect mix.'
finished 25th february 2025 good read three stars i liked it nothing less nothing more kindle library loaner first from oldham jessica raker #1 entertaining story set in various locations england raker a police sergeant...called something different early on when she is still stationed closer to london or one of the close by towns...forget the exact name...a weapons officer? suggesting as it was not clearly defined...that her job meant she was one permitted to carry a gun something more than a bobby's stick.
so...she shoots and kills a man pointing a gun at her and is told "you'll be lucky not to get charged with murder." say whud? i mean, what the living FUCK! this is our world. their not illegal aliens who crossed our fucking border at night. they're "immigrants" and being one for the rule of law you are anti-immigrant". and because some shithead retarded fucking man thinks he's a fucking women, the rest of the fucking world has to accept that...or! you're a "hater". this is our fucking world.
the fucking government is a complete fucking fraud, how many yes fucking trillions of fuckin dollars of tax money is slipped to friends' families. stacy fucking abrams...some fucking "group" keen on the green fuckin agenda and they get two fucking billion dollars.
and to reveal that is a threat to the fucking constitution.

anyway, entertaining story. reads like there's obviously more to come, things left unsaid, unknown.
Life for Metropolitan Police firearms officer Jessica Raker has been satisfying professionally, perhaps not personally. Her son is still young but her daughter has become a recalcitrant teenager and she and her husband not longer share the closeness they once had. Life becomes more complicated when Jessica kills one of the robbers of a jewelry store (and why was her husband there?) and the robber turns out to be the favorite son of gang leader. Jessica and her family are is relocated to Clitheroe, the small town where she grew up. She brings her problems with her: her angry husband, their troubled marriage, unhappy children, and the worry that she is being stalked by a hired killer. She finds new problems waiting in Clitheroe: jealousy on the possibly corrupt police force, a rare murder in the district, and Clitheroe’s version of organized crime. Who will give up her location? How long will it take for her to be found?
Death at Dead Man's Stake is the first in a new series and I can’t wait to read what comes next. Jessica Raker is a competent police officer with serious problems. You feel her insecurities and worry with her about the assassin following her. The plot is well organized and the country location ( I had to look up cattle grid) is well described. This is an excellent police procedural! 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Severn House and Nick Oldham for this ARC.
The first book in a new crime series following police sergeant Jess Raker who is the target of an organised crime gang out for revenge following the killing of one of their sons during an armed robbery. Jessica is forced to move back north for the safety of her and her family. Once there she is quickly put to work investigating several murders.
Jessica is a great main character. Strong but not without thought for others. Her are Samira both stand out as ones I want to read more about. The book was fast paced and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did think the last third was very rushed and it felt quite unfinished in some aspects although some bits were neatly ended. Her family is quite a part of the first half then not really mentioned again. I’m sure they’ll pop up in future books but it felt quite disjointed. This didn’t stop me enjoying the book but I hope the second one will feel more fully fleshed out the entire way through.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first in a new series featuring Sergeant Jessica Raker. I enjoyed it so much that I’m looking forward to further books in the series.
Jess Raker is a firearms officer in the Metropolitan Police. One day, she has no option but to shoot a criminal – who dies – and his disreputable family put out a contract on her head. At the scene, she also discovers that her husband has been having an affair, so when she’s advised to relocate, she sees it as an opportunity to give him a second chance.
Jess grew up in Lancashire and a vacancy for a sergeant is available in a rural area, so she moves the family there. She teams up with Samira, a PCSO, and they work well together. They’re both really good characters in the book and I warmed to them straight away.
Unfortunately for Jess, her enemies are still on the lookout for her.
A great storyline and this promises to be an excellent series.
Thank you to NetGalley and Severn House for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
Death at Dead Man’s Stake by Nick Oldham is the first book in the Jessica Raker series, and it's off to a good start.
A split-second decision has life-changing consequences for Metropolitan Police firearms officer Jessica Raker when she fatally wounds the son of a notorious organized crime chief during a robbery and discovers her husband has been having an affair.
With her career, her marriage, and her life in danger, Jess is sent back to her hometown of Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley to take up a sergeant role in Lancashire police. But as she throws herself into dealing with a hostage situation up on Dead Man's Stake Farm and a body discovered in a reservoir on her first day, her enemies are plotting their revenge.
I really like Jess as a character, as she is a strong female protagonist. I also really love Samira.
It took a bit of getting used to the back-and-forth of how Jess came to be back at Clitheroe in the first part of the book, but then the story took off and didn't let up until the surprising ending. I cannot wait for more in this series with these great characters.
I would recommend this book, and I am looking forward to more in this new series.
A new police procedural series with a strong female main police sergeant. Jessica is part of the firearms squad in London when she kills a gangster after a robbery. After a short time in admin, she is moved to the Ribble valley in Lancashire to run a police station. The area where she grew up. Her first week is eventful and she is not welcomed by all her co-workers. Meanwhile, the gangster family have put a price on her head, at least once they find out who she is. This book has an interesting plot, moves quickly and has shortish chapters which make for easy reading on the whole. The characters are well portrayed and believable and the limitations of rural policing are described well. There are a few twists and there are coincidences which perhaps stretch reality a little? Saying that, I thought this was a solid book based on different investigations. Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC
Death At Dead Man's Stake by Nick Oldham is the first book in the Jessica Raker series and I loved it. This book you learn about the main character Jessica Raker, now with a split-second decision and a life-changing consequences for Metropolitan Police firearms officer Jessica Raker when she fatally wounds the son of a notorious organised crime chief during a robbery in Greenwich and then discovers her husband has been having an affair.
"Wow. . . . . I would be in Bits!"
Now with her career, her marriage and her life in danger, Jess is sent back to her home town of Clitheroe in the Ribble Valley to take up a sergeant role in Lancashire police. But, as she throws herself into dealing with a hostage situation up on Dead Man's Stake Farm and a body discovered in a reservoir on her first day, her enemies are plotting their revenge - and they're closer than she thinks . . .
This book is a promising start to an excellent series and I am looking forward to the next book.
Sergeant Jessica Raker has returned to the Ribble Valley after starting her working life within the MET Police rising to be a Firearms Officer. Jess, along with her husband, Josh and their two kids - Lily and Jason are currently living in a small village as someone from Jess's past is wanting to catch up with Jess over something that happened in her past approx 12 months ago. In the present - Bart Morrison goes on a walk about to the Audley Reservoir from his apartment at the Pendle View Care Home in Clitheroe, and something happens to him whilst he is there. Jess along with PCSO Samira Patel and Detective Doogie Doolan have their suspicions that something happened here. Who? Why? How? What? All of these questions are answered via a few twist and turns within this fast paced and page turning book. Bring on book #2!!
Death at Dead Man's Stake is the first in a new series featuring Sergeant Jessica Raker. Formerly a Met firearms officer, she is relocated to her native Lancashire as a patrol sergeant. The opening section of the novel alternates between the incident in London and her new life. Day one on the job sees Jess take on a murder investigation.
As Jess and her team investigate, links to some well known local criminals come to light. But Jess doesn't know that her past is about to catch up with her.
This is a good read, and sets up the series well with several loose ends left at the end of the novel. WIth a strong lead character and an interesting supporting cast there is great potential for an engaging and exciting series to develop.
When I first learned that Nick Oldham had embarked on a new series of crime thrillers I was pleased to find they are set in the Ribble Valley, a vast area of great natural beauty, which I was lucky enough to call home many years ago. The author has drawn the location with obvious affection and afforded it the dignity it deserves. As a curtain raiser to a new series this novel is an absolute belter. The plot is full of intricate twists and turns and is clever and compelling. Jess Raker is an interesting and intriguing lead character. Just the right sort of person to meet the demands of policing rural Lancashire and brings an authentic back story with her. All the characters - good and bad - are drawn with pitch perfect realism. Can't wait to read the next installment in this series.
A British police procedural, Death at Dead Man's Stake (2024) by Nick Oldham is the first of the Jessica Raker crime mystery series. A Metropolitan Police firearms officer, Jessica Raker shoots an armed robber who is the son of an organized crime family. She then discovers her husband has been unfaithful and so she opts to transfer to the Lancashire police as a police sergeant. Initially facing hassles from her new colleagues, Jessica then has to deal with a hostage situation and the discovery of a dead body. Jessica is a no-nonsense hero, facing multiple dangers in a gritty but first-class crime mystery read with a four star rating. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without any inducement.
Having read all of Nick’s previous books, I was delighted to see this new series, especially set up north, with good gritty northern characters and crime.
We meet Jessica Raker a police woman who is forced out of the Met with a price in her head. Reluctantly she has to transfer to her home ground where she grew up in case anyone comes after her and her family.
I have to say, it is one fabulous book, the pace is relentless, the main characters are likeable and the story is good, and fast paced, with twists and turns you don’t see coming. Nick, being ex police can certainly spin a yarn or two and everything is believable. I absolutely loved it.
Delighted to see there are more books in the pipeline.
Jessica is trying to settle into a new life, but with someone hunting her, it is only a matter of time before they find her.
While she is trying to keep a lower profile, she begins the investigation of a strange death in the new town she is living in. Before too long, there are more questions than answers, and it seems to all circle back to certain people in town.
As the investigation continues, Jessica realizes that this case is more personal than she thought at first. But it might also end her life.
This is a great start to a very promising new series featuring Sergeant Jess Raker, recently relocated from the Met police to Lancashire. Jess is a strong character, with empathy for her colleagues and the storyline is strong and well thought out. I really liked the read, it is very enjoyable and I would recommend to lovers of police procedurals. I look forward to the next chapter! Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
DEATH AT DEAD MAN'S STAKE - I found this book interesting, well written and immersing. I like the alternating chapters of and present, both intriguing. Good characters. Multiple story lines, one of which continues, although I do not consider that a cliffhanger. I look forward to the next book. Source: Netgalley. 4*
A new series by Nick Oldham, a kick-ass and intriguing heroing, humour, and a great cast of characters Give me more soon as I thoroughly enjoyed it Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Great start to the new Sergeant Jessica Raker series, I loved it! She's a good character, feisty and resourceful, even though there's a mob boss out to have her killed. Her PCSO Samira Patel is very likeable and the 2 of them work well together. The story itself is excellent: there's tension, action and blips in Jess' private life - it all works well together, with a scary and ultimately satisfactory ending. Can't wait for no. 2 in the series!
