Steve is the only half-orc of his tribe, isolated up in the mountains of Niflheim. With his parents passing, he feels adrift and uncertain of his future in the tribe. He decides to venture to the other orkin tribes to make more sense of who he is and what he wants for his future. He knows that one of the other tribes has human women, but doesn’t want to place too much hope in finding his place amongst them.

Billie is finding her place as one of the abducted women in Fýrifírar. Having been a bartender back on Earth, she finds her work in the kitchens dull and unfulfilling. She is looking for her purpose in her new home when she finds the tribe has a long abandoned bar that they are willing to help restore to its former glory. When Steve arrives with a group of orkin from the isolated snow tribe and volunteers to help with the bar, neither Steve nor Billie can deny their growing attraction. They have to balance their own journeys of self-discovery to include a mate.

Boring and needed a better editor. This wasn’t the authors first book so I’m a bit more critical of the frequency of mistakes. It was dual POV, alternating chapters, and at one point it slipped from Steve’s POV to Billie’s. Some sentences started out of nowhere or seemed to be mid-thought. At one point in chapter 16 it just said IMAGE FROM KIETH in all caps. I’m guessing the author meant to insert an image there?! Whoever let this go live without a proper edit should be embarrassed. Even if I could overlook all of that (which I couldn’t, there were so many errors it absolutely distracted from the actual story) I didn’t enjoy the book. I didn’t feel the chemistry between our main characters. I also felt like dumping the earth females on an alien planet “inspired” by Norse mythology was lazy writing. The world building was already there for the author, and I still didn’t feel invested in the story or plot. And I usually love Norse mythology! This was a disservice to it. Not my worst read of 2025, but definitely towards the bottom.

This review is crazy late, I'm so sorry. I've loved all of the Abandoned on Niflheim books so far. Its been lovely to watch Jen grow as a writer even just through the short span of these three books. Editing could be a little stronger.
Her characters are relatable and wholesome.... mostly ;)
I appreciate the low angst and love sinking into the culture that I wish ours was more like. Which is a little sad. But I'm grateful for the space shes created.
Spice is, of course, on point. Looking forward to more of the series!

Review of Steve's Barmaid by Jenifer Wood
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌶️🌶️🌶️
Let's start with the basics here. I LOVED Agnarr's Teacher and Agnarr's Jarlin. But this one is absolutely fantastic! It's definitely her best so far and Steve is just the best!

I am lucky enough to be a part of Jennifer's street team and read this book chapter by chapter as she wrote it. And I just finished reading the full version tonight. It takes a lot for me to read a story for a second time now when there are so many books I want to read but somehow I DEVOURED this even though I knew what happened. The pacing is excellent, the character development is 🤌🏼, and she has me salivating for the next book in the series!

I cannot describe how much I adored this story! I was ecstatic when Jenifer Wood chose to gift me an early copy. Steve is everything in this book. He's a sweet, protective cinnamon roll that deserves all the HEAs in the universe. Billie is a relatable fmc in so many ways. This book is, by far, my favorite in the series.

Admittedly Billie got on my nerves last book and I wasn't a fan. BUT NOW. I get it. I get her and I like her. Steve is such a sweet half orc that's inexperience and a little awkward, but hot as all heck. I actually really enjoyed Billie's story and getting to see the other characters again too. Joey was a HOOT as well. The tones in this book stayed true to the series but I found this one to have a new depth I really enjoyed! There's grief and loss and finding happiness at the end of that while honoring your feelings. A fun, beautiful and hilarious read!

This was unfortunately not the book for me (which is completely fine, it will be for others). I just didn’t mesh with the world, or writing style. So grateful to the author for allowing me the opportunity to receive the ARC.

* I was an ARC reader*

So I’ve not read any others of wood’s writing and I’ve actually never read anything remotely “cozy” and I would say this is definitely COZY, so it’s been actually a really good and fun reading experience for me, something new, something quite light, romantic, not too high-stakes, focusing on character. This book can definitely be read in isolation of the other couple of books but I would imagine if you’d read the other two it would be really nice to see the character development in the series and to touch base with past favourites.

HEADLINE: *Cozy* *Cute believable characters* *winter vibes* *yummy cozy romance* *Good Smex* *stars hollow vibes* *some edits and further proofs needed for a fully 5 star*

⭐️ 🍂 The town feels like stars hollow (Gilmore girls) in its community vibes and I am aaaaall for this! 🍂 ⭐️

The spice: 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️ 3.8/5 it was the right type of cozy smut after a hard day chasing sprogs around 🤣 the scene lengths were perfect, the writing was really good, immersive , not repetitive, each scene was fresh, and it added in just enough of the more “out there” smutty monster tropes whilst still being steamy romantic rather than just dirty dirty outlandish freaky smex ;)

SPOILERS

I really enjoyed Billie as a character, I empathised quite heavily with her, she’s confident a bit bulshy, she’s finding her way, working through past traumas and she’s had pretty meh past relationships. I struggled a little near the end where she was second guessing herself so much that she was kinda sabotaging her relationship with Steve, up until then I felt like we were kindred spirits but whereas when I was presented with a gorgeous golden retriever/cinnnamon roll partner I threw myself in, she still couldn’t get over her “stuff” and instead of feeling empathy there I wanted to chuck my kindle across the room 😂 but we persevered and it was all good in the end. This character quirk was actually pretty believable though, I’ve known women like this but I feel like bf Joey could have wrangled that self sabotage out of Billie a bit quicker and perhaps billie’s stubbornness in this regard was more for the narrative than a clear representation of her particular character, perhaps? It didn’t ruin my reading at all and maybe I’m knit-picking but overall I really enjoy Billie and her being a curvier lady also made me really happy.

I ♥️ Steve. he’s thoughtful, kind and generous, he was a bit lost and down on himself and he just needed a confident woman to set him right. I liked that he was ready for a new adventure and was ready to let go of his past home but I feel like that was framed more about Billie in the writing whereas I got a sense that Steve was really just ready for a new chapter anyway. I like to think that if Billie had turned him down he would have found the orc equivalent of a litre of ice cream and moped for a couple of weeks before heading off to check out the next tribe. I’m rambling now but I just really love Steve. I wish I could be his barmaid 🤣 but I was sacked from working at a bar cos I sucked at pulling pints 🤣🤣🤣

So why did I only give this 4/5?

Honestly, the only thing that held me back from giving a 5 was one thing (and I’m a pedant so bear with me):

I got a bit confused with the characters Runa and Emla, where it seemed Wood may have replaced some of the scenes with the other character or added them into a scene without clear indication so that as a reader I began to get confused with who was who or who was i which scene or what each of their roles were. Emla being a healer and Runa being head cook? I’m still a little confused on that which if I’d read the previous books I might not have been as confused.

So, really that all comes down to just another quick edit/proofread through and then I would happily give 5 🌟

I will be reading the former 2 books at some point and I will happily read more Jenifer Wood books, especially about the Orkin, i like Niflheim, and I really enjoyed this book!

Edit: I mentioned typos in my review before mentioning to author which was unfair so I’ve removed those mentions.

Billie and Steve are such a cute couple. I loved that they had a foundation of friendship first, especially since Billie's past relationships had always lacked that.

I wish we had more time with Billie's Bar completed. I liked that Steve was integral to refurbishing the Bar, but I wanted more Billie the Barmaid. I also expected more of the human women to be present since Billie was described as so social in the first 2 books. But we really only see Joey and some of Piper.

Speaking of Joey.... I LOVED seeing the start of her and Reykr. I am so excited for their story.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

The third book in the Abandoned on Niflheim, this story introduces Steve and Billie's relationship. While Agnarr's Teacher and Agnarr's Jarlin started off spicy within the first twenty percent, this story is a bit slower to the spice, but doesn't fail on hitting the mark.

Steve is the half orc/ human that we met in the first books with Piper and Agnarr. In this story, he's taken the invitation that was extended to him by Agnarr to come to their tribe and meet the orcs and humans there. Though he's traveled to other tribes that weren't as welcoming as he hoped, he has the feeling that Agnarr's tribe will be a great fit for him, and he's willing to risk staying there to bet on that, plus he thinks that if he happens to get a mate at the same time would be great. Along with him, his best friend, who is also like a big brother, Reykr, and two other Orcs travel there. It doesn't take long before Steve meets Billie and the instant attraction ignites between them.

Billie, introduced also in the first two books, is trying to make sense of life on Niflheim since they've been discarded there. Normally, she works in the kitchens, but recently has shown interest in the old bar that closed down years ago. With Agnarr's blessing, and everybody's push, she decides to go ahead and start that venture. No sooner does she start than she gets a chance meeting with Steve when he startles her as she's cleaning the bar. Their attraction grows over time, but even with the magnetic pull they have towards each other, she's hesitant because she's used to being discarded after getting intimate with someone. She knows that Steve is different, and his lack of knowledge with women proves it, but even with him admitting that he'd be thrilled to be chosen mates, she's still hesitant.

I absolutely devoured this book in a day, and can't wait to see what Jenifer comes up with next. Hopefully, we get Joey and Reykr's story, or even a novella.

Listen, I didn’t read the first books in the series—and honestly? That didn’t matter one bit. Steve’s Barmaid is a warm, low-angst, high-heat story that delivers sweet connection and primal tension in equal measure.

Steve is a half-orc sweetheart who's spent his life looking for a place to belong. After bouncing from tribe to tribe, he lands in Agnarr’s territory with hope in his heart and maybe—just maybe—a future mate in mind. He’s quiet, kind, a little socially awkward, and fully ready to be chosen.

Billie, meanwhile, is the kind of heroine I instantly root for. She’s rebuilding her life on Niflheim, tired of being discarded, and ready to reclaim her dreams. She was a bartender back on Earth, and now she’s putting her heart into reopening a long-abandoned bar. Cue Steve showing up to help — with muscles, gentle curiosity, and zero experience with women. And yes, their “chance meeting” at the bar is delightfully flustery.

What follows is a deliciously slow fall into something real — full of soft touches, emotional vulnerability, and very steamy rewards. Billie wants to take things slow, but the connection between them is too hot to ignore. Their chemistry simmers and sizzles until they’re practically burning the bar down with each look, touch, and date-night that turns very not-innocent.

This is one of those books that makes you feel cozy even when the characters are getting decidedly un-cozy. Billie’s hesitation around being used and discarded again felt real, and Steve’s total adoration and patience made their eventual connection feel earned. He’s a literal green-tinged golden retriever of a man, and I was so here for it.

I was given an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts/feelings/opinions are my own.

Steve is a sweet and very innocent half orc (human mom and orc dad). He’s innocent, not just physically but in other ways as well. He has been overprotected his entire life by everyone else and has decided to go out and search for something that he can’t find in his home tribe.

Billie is trying to find her place in life after being abducted and stranded on a foreign planet with other women. Billie and Steve become friends as they rebuild the abandoned bar and soon become more. Our FMC is confident which is pleasing.

The steam is there for sure, but it never got repetitive or bland. There were no icky words or terms used (iykyk) and the scenes were appropriate lengths (imo). The story flowed well with a clear plot and never veered off course. I can definitely see the growth as a writer between books 1 and 3. JW is finding her writing style and becoming more confident for sure.

I do wish we could have seen a bit more of the other women (even in quick passing while they all eat together). There is definitely a set of characters we see a lot of and I kind of forgot others existed, so I think that could be something that happens going forward. I also wanted to shake her a bit at the end because she was overthinking which conflicts with her general confident personality.

This book sets up who our next main characters will be in book 4 and I’m curious to see how their relationship dynamic will work out.

Overall: 4/5 ⭐️ (a strong 4)
Steam: 3.5/5 🔥

I would say if you didn’t care for the first two books (I’ve seen reviews), you might be open to trying this one, as it’s definitely its own book and I enjoyed it overall.

I've been looking at Jenifer Wood's books for a while now and considering the fact I have Agnar and Piper's books in my TBR, it was even better. Saying that, I couldn't wait to read Steve and Billie's story.

Steve is a half-orc who has had this feeling throughout his life that he didn't fit in with his tribe. So he and his friends decided to go to Niflheim to Piper and Agnar's tribe. There are a lot of women there who have been kidnapped from Earth. He meets Billie - one of the women who live there. She caught his attention straight away and from this moment on his fate was sealed.

I loved every single interaction between those two. Billie was a bartender on Earth and wanted to fix one of the old bars in Niflheim and finally work towards her dream. When Steve and his friends decided to stay, he was the main person who wanted to help rebuild the bar and, of course, being together every day helped them to get to know each other. He was really inexperienced, because he had never had a mate. But Billie was something different. She was beautiful, sexy and really nice. When they've seen them, they are attracted to each other, with the idea of going on dates to see if they fit together. O, what dates those were 😍. Even though she wanted to take things slow, neither of them could resist that burning fire.

Every single time they had a date, there were sexy times following. Their scenes were just so damn hot and spicy. The smut was off the charts and I couldn't stop seeing them together 🥵🥵🥵. Even though there was some height difference, that didn't stop them from doing the deed 🌶️🌶️🌶️. I loved everything about them. Everything was going so well between them, that maybe they could become bonded mates. Do you think it could happen? Well, you need to read the book to find out.

I also loved the side characters of the story. Joey and Reykr were one of my favorites and I hope that someday we will have their story as well. Because I can see that they are destined to be with each other.

Overall, I am in love with Steve and Billie's story.

It could've been at least a third shorter. There were so many times that things are over-explained and repeated in every chapter. It annoyed me so much how many times it was mentioned that she's had many partners before Steve and how much she was comparing them to him. We can see that Steve was better that all of them, without saying every chapter that she was just a casual hookup for others, and Steve seems to like her for more than sex. If the hero was saying those things, I would've dnf-ed immediately.

Also, she's been complaining the whole book how all men wanted from her was sex and it was all casual for them, and how she wished to have a partner/mate. And when the mating mark showed up, instead of being ecstatic and accepting it, she told Steve that she needed time to think?? What do you mean think?? The guy showed and told you how special you are to him and how much you mean to him, while you also have feelings, but you need time? What for? It was just a stupid and unnecessary way to create conflict and make the unnecessarily long book even longer.

Virgin hero is one of my favorite tropes, and Steve was so sweet and kind, and all around good guy, and he deserved another type of heroine. Someone who cared for him as deeply as he did for her. Which reminded me of how much sex was in this book. The heroine kept saying how she wanted to take things slowly, because he was inexperienced, but she never did. She just seemed horny and he was the first truly nice guy who showed interest in her, and that's why she ended up with him. Steve deserved more.

Steve's Barmaid was an adorable, heartwarming, funny, spicy read and I loved it so much!

I feel like with this book Jenifer Wood has really found her voice and her stride with this series. I liked the first two books a lot, but I loved this one! It has everything I enjoyed about the first books, but with so much added humour and personality that the characters really came to life.

Billie is adjusting to life on Niflheim, she decides to renovate and re-open the village bar. After all the humans and orcs need a place to hang out and have fun, and she's happy to be social and provide a place for all. Steve is a half orc who's never really felt like he belongs with his tribe. On his arrival to Fyrifirar as part of a trip to visit other tribes, he meets Billie and falls head over heels. But could the beautiful human ever love a shy orc like him?

There is so much to love in this story. Steve is just adorably shy and inexperienced, and the two of them really hear each other out and communicate their feelings. The humour in this story was also a highlight for me, I laughed so much while reading. And it wouldn't be a Niflheim book without lots of spice and some fancy equipment. Steve's enthusiasm for pleasing Billie was so hot. The book was perfectly balanced between plot and spice.

This series just keeps getting better and I am so excited for more!

Gleeful Goblin Review: I can't properly express how much I love this book and this world. Especially in this story, there is a wholesomeness paired with utterly spectacular fílth that makes the characters truly special. Both Steve and Billie are somewhat outsiders who feel like they don't fit in quite right anywhere and have struggled to find their way so to speak. But they find that way, together, through rebuilding Billie's Bar. Both characters build each other up and instill more self confidence in each other by first becoming friends and then oh so much more. As Billie describes Steve: "He feels like an innocent little bean and I don’t want to wreck him completely." And to be fair, in many exceedingly wholesome and sweet ways he IS an innocent little bean...but he is beautifully *ahem* teachable. The relationship between these two feels like it's an appropriate speed and develops naturally with a great balance of tension and progression. Something I really love about the books in this series is that not only do we get to know the two main characters but there is such a wonderful depth that's developed with other side characters that it's not just natural for them to have their own books, but you will go feral to have certain characters get their own books *immediately* just like I and so many others have. 5/5 Stars

I received an ARC from the author and I am leaving a voluntary review. Thank you Jenifer Wood!

**

What an adorable story. I loved Agnarr's and Piper's story so I had high hopes for this one. And they were met, this was really good! We already have met both characters in previous books and I love that Steve got this book to find his love and get his HEA. And Billie, I adored her from the first time I met her and this book just deepened that connection. Seeing these two come together and fall in love was lovely to see. And the way Billie got her bar, oooh, loved that too.

The way this book explores "firsts" in so many ways is wonderful. While Billie might have more experience, she doesn't judge Steve and instead, guides him gently and doesn't worry over his inexperience. And it's not just one teaching the other, but both teaching both and experiencing those firsts together. Love to see that.

The story is low-angst and it feel fresh and cute. The plot moves along switfly but I love the slow moments too, especially when Billie and Steve are getting to know one another. They communicate well and I felt the joy in both of them at the end. I feel lucky to have been able to read this book.

I received an ARC for this book and the following is based on my own opinion.
3.5/5 🌶
Billie is one of 12 women displaced from earth, learning her place in a tribe of Orcs on a planet unknown to humans. Steve is a half Orc, half Human from a neighboring tribe whose mother was a human woman dropped in their care. When Steve decides he is looking for more than what his current life can offer, he sets out to explore the other tribes of the area, finds Billie and possibly a new home.
This is such a cozy, comfort romance and I absolutely fell in love with Steve. He is such a sweet, precious cinnamon roll of a character. Billie is such a fun character, she’s so outgoing and bubbly and willing to be a friend to anyone needing help. But she’s also a strong female, knows what she wants and won’t let people walk all over her. Steve and Billie’s relationship was so adorable to watch unfold. Steve being so “innocent” and Billie more experienced made for a nice change in dynamic.
What I love about Jenifer Wood’s MMCs in this and her past two Niflheim stories is how caring and concerned they are with their partners needs and consent. It makes for a beautiful relationship and some steamy, spicy love scenes. I also love how they flow into each other and build on the previous story so we learn more about the world and characters with each book. It was so nice to have Agnarr and Piper still a part of this book.
I would recommend reading Agnarr’s Teacher and Agnarr’s Jarlin prior to this book so you have the world and character knowledge going into the story. I think it’s possible to read this book without the other two, but some things may be a bit confusing or you may lose some information from the first two. Being that they are all under 300 pages, I think it’s worth the time to delve into the entire series because they truly make for a great cozy read that will warm your heart and add some spice to your reading.

This orc/human romance had a lot of tropes that made it an enjoyable reading experience for me;

Virgin MMC
Forced proximity
Size difference
Just the stupidest, most earnest, most precious, most clueless MMC u can find
Curvy, snarky FMC
MATES <3

This is the first book i’ve read by Jenifer Wood, though I know there’s 2 books previously in this series- however they’re interconnected standalones and it was super easy to understand without all context. The writing style and the plot points are VERY reminiscent of various Ice Planet Barbarians installments which I think has some good and some bad connotations. On one hand it was very bingeable, pretty fun and escapist, goofy and smutty. On the other, I felt kind of bored by the plot at times, and there was always comparisons happening in the back of my mind, distracting me from the reading. One thing that was a tad too annoying and cheesy for me was the repeated (37647 times) joking about how the orcs don’t understand human colloquialisms…. I certainly didn’t need that shit happening every single chapter lol.

OVERALL, no regrets finishing this book, I think with a bit more editing (a non ARC version) there would be very few technical flaws, and tbh the smut parts were fantastic. FANTASTICCCCCC. I also loved the FMCs personal journey with knowing her worth and learning to trust that people around her love her and can take care of her <3333

Steve might be the only half-orc/half-human in his tribe, but I'm convinced he's half-orc/half-golden retriever. I adored him!

Billie is new to Niflheim and looking for a purpose. Deciding to revive the village's old bar, she embarks on a renovation project complete with an orc crew of helpers, including visitors from a rival tribe. Steve also finds himself searching for purpose after his father's death. Seeking adventure and fulfillment, he travels to Fýrifírar with a group of his tribesmen. They're warmly welcomed upon arrival. Billie and Steve attract one another immediately.

These two have a sweet and very intentional relationship. Billie is eager to avoid the mistakes of her past. They also have super hot sex. Both being cunnilingus enthusiasts. Like big time. Steve comes from going down on her and Billie "fucking loved giving head". Again...hot!

The only thing that was difficult for me was the need for some more editing. Some of the sentences were pretty much repeated and felt like they could have been removed with another edit. This took me out of the story a couple of times, but not enough that caused me to DNF.

The cutest cutie that ever cutied. Steve was always gonna be a scene stealer from the moment we met him in book 1 of Agnarr & Piper's story. He's the only half-orc of his tribe - his mother the first known human female abandoned on Niflheim - and is feeling his inbetween-ness. He's outgrown his "lil brother" status amongst his own tribe and is ready for more. More places to visit. Things to learn. Orkin to meet, or rather ... meet the human women recently welcomed into the neighboring tribe. Steve just hits that perfect balance of eager and shy, stars in his eyes, best good boy that can Capital F Fuck. So yea, he's perfect.

Billie! Yanno, the standout for me of the Niflheim series is these women get their flowers. And it's not a stretch of the imagination. Billie is new to the tribe (see: abandoned on a strage planet making the best of things) looking to stake out a place and purpose of her own. So she advocates for her needs, gets support from her friends, and gets railed by the very polite Steve the half-orc. Low drama, all heart, lots of cum, and a HEA that'll make you swoon. I love this series.

I am so in love with this world!! As much as I loved the first two books, I think this one is my favorite (so far; I’m already starving for book four after the crumbs that couple has in this book)! The MMC, Steve, is sooooo cute. He is half orc/half human; his mother was another human woman left on Niflheim decades ago. After both of his parents pass, he decides to look beyond the home where he always felt too sheltered. The FMC, Billie, is sassy, sweet, and ready to make her own place in this new life amongst the orcs. She decides to revitalize the village’s old, rundown bar. If only she had some strong orcs to help out… 👀

I loved every second of this book (except for one part where I was briefly scared for Billie and Joey, one of the other human women)! Billie is so sweet and cute and I loved the playful relationship between her and Steve from beginning to end. I cried quite a bit but the spicy scenes reaaaaaally made up for it. I just love this book, I love this series.

This was such an adorable, funny, light and romantic read! There was so much to love about this book! It had a decent dose of humor, the right amount of spice, low stakes and the sweetest romance!

I loved how sweet, shy and inexperienced Steve was. It seriously just made him so loveable! I loved how Billie gently guided him in their intimacy without ever judging him. Their love was just so wholesome and heartwarming! I also really enjoyed Billie's story and seeing her growth. Honestly, I just loved her and Steve together! I especially loved how they met! When I was reading that part, I kept thinking that someday when they have kids, it'd be the story of: "this is how I met your mother."😅

One aspect I would have liked to have seen a little more of, is the other human women. That said, I'm really looking forward to book 4! I can't wait for Joey's story!😍

Thank you Jenifer Wood for the opportunity to read this ARC! My thoughts and opinions are my own in this review!

Sweet virgin MMC

I didn't realize how low angst this was when I signed up to ARC so personally this would be 3/3.5 but objectively a 4.

Very sweet romance between jaded Billie and earnest Steve. Billie is a human woman abducted from earth and landed with several other women on an alien planet inhabited by orcs. She is finding her place in this new world and working on opening her own bar. Steve is also finding his way. As a a half orc, he is an outsider in his tribe. He leaves with his best friend and a couple companions seeking a place to belong.

There's some missteps and awkwardness but luckily they both have awesome BFFs/wing people to help them along! The relationship develop starts a little slow but very quickly heats up.

I recommend if you like sweet, low-angst romance, virgin boys who learn quickly, a self assured FMC, and fantasy elements.
